Four years ago, Patrick made a change to hold rtnl mutex during netlink
dump callbacks.
I believe it was a wrong move. This slows down concurrent dumps, making
good old /proc/net/ files faster than rtnetlink in some situations.
This occurred to me because one "ip link show dev ..." was _very_ slow
on a workload adding/removing network devices in background.
All dump callbacks are able to use RCU locking now, so this patch does
roughly a revert of commits :
1c2d670f36 : [RTNETLINK]: Hold rtnl_mutex during netlink dump callbacks
6313c1e099 : [RTNETLINK]: Remove unnecessary locking in dump callbacks
This let writers fight for rtnl mutex and readers going full speed.
It also takes care of phonet : phonet_route_get() is now called from rcu
read section. I renamed it to phonet_route_get_rcu()

This makes sure that when a driver calls the ethtool's
get/set_settings() callback of another driver, the data passed to it
is clean. This guarantees that speed_hi will be zeroed correctly if
the called callback doesn't explicitely set it: we are sure we don't
get a corrupted speed from the underlying driver. We also take care of
setting the cmd field appropriately (ETHTOOL_GSET/SSET).
This applies to dev_ethtool_get_settings(), which now makes sure it
sets up that ethtool command parameter correctly before passing it to
drivers. This also means that whoever calls dev_ethtool_get_settings()
does not have to clean the ethtool command parameter. This function
also becomes an exported symbol instead of an inline.
All drivers visible to make allyesconfig under x86_64 have been
updated.

Since now when bonding uses rx_handler, all traffic going into bond
device goes thru bond_handle_frame. So there's no need to go back into
bonding code later via ptype handlers. This patch converts
original ptype handlers into "bonding receive probes". These functions
are called from bond_handle_frame and they are registered per-mode.
Note that vlan packets are also handled because they are always untagged
thanks to vlan_untag()

When physical identification of an adapter is done by toggling the
mechanism on and off through software utilizing the set_phys_id operation,
it is done with a fixed duration for both on and off states. Some drivers
may want to set a custom duration for the on/off intervals. This patch
changes the API so the return code from the driver's entry point when it
is called with ETHTOOL_ID_ACTIVE can specify the frequency at which to
cycle the on/off states, and updates the drivers that have already been
converted to use the new set_phys_id and use the synchronous method for
identifying an adapter.
The physical identification frequency set in the updated drivers is based
on how it was done prior to the introduction of set_phys_id.
Compile tested only. Also fixes a compiler warning in sfc.

The feature flags NETIF_F_TSO and NETIF_F_TSO6 independently enable
TSO for IPv4 and IPv6 respectively. However, the test in
netdev_fix_features() and its predecessor functions was never updated
to check for NETIF_F_TSO6, possibly because it was originally proposed
that TSO for IPv6 would be dependent on both feature flags.
Now that these feature flags can be changed independently from
user-space and we depend on netdev_fix_features() to fix invalid
feature combinations, it's important to disable them both if
scatter-gather is disabled. Also disable NETIF_F_TSO_ECN so
user-space sees all TSO features as disabled.

Now there are 2 paths for rx vlan frames. When rx-vlan-hw-accel is
enabled, skb is untagged by NIC, vlan_tci is set and the skb gets into
vlan code in __netif_receive_skb - vlan_hwaccel_do_receive.
For non-rx-vlan-hw-accel however, tagged skb goes thru whole
__netif_receive_skb, it's untagged in ptype_base hander and reinjected
This incosistency is fixed by this patch. Vlan untagging happens early in
__netif_receive_skb so the rest of code (ptype_all handlers, rx_handlers)
see the skb like it was untagged by hw.

This change is meant to prevent a possible null pointer dereference if
NETIF_F_NTUPLE is defined but the set_rx_ntuple function pointer is not.
The main motivation behind this patch is to eventually replace the ntuple
interfaces entirely with the network flow classifier interfaces. This
allows the device drivers to maintain the ntuple check internally while

The ethtool ETHTOOL_PHYS_ID command runs for an arbitrarily long
period of time, holding the RTNL lock. This blocks routing updates,
device enumeration, and various important operations that one might
want to keep running while hunting for the flashing LED.
We need to drop the RTNL lock during this operation, but currently the
core implementation is a thin wrapper around a driver operation and
drivers may well depend upon holding the lock.
Define a new driver operation 'set_phys_id' with an argument that sets
the ID indicator on/off/inactive/active (the last optional, for any
driver or firmware that prefers to handle blinking asynchronously).
When this is defined, the ethtool core drops the lock while waiting
and only acquires it around calls to this operation.
Deprecate the 'phys_id' operation in favour of this. It can be
removed once all in-tree drivers are converted.

This patch uses __copy_from_user_nocache on transmit to bypass data
cache for a performance improvement. skb_add_data_nocache and
skb_copy_to_page_nocache can be called by sendmsg functions to use
this feature, initial support is in tcp_sendmsg. This functionality is
configurable per device using ethtool.
Presumably, this feature would only be useful when the driver does
not touch the data. The feature is turned on by default if a device
indicates that it does some form of checksum offload; it is off by
default for devices that do no checksum offload or indicate no checksum
is necessary. For the former case copy-checksum is probably done
anyway, in the latter case the device is likely loopback in which case
the no cache copy is probably not beneficial.
This patch was tested using 200 instances of netperf TCP_RR with
1400 byte request and one byte reply. Platform is 16 core AMD x86.
No-cache copy disabled:
672703 tps, 97.13% utilization
50/90/99% latency:244.31 484.205 1028.41
No-cache copy enabled:
702113 tps, 96.16% utilization,
50/90/99% latency 238.56 467.56 956.955
Using 14000 byte request and response sizes demonstrate the
effects more dramatically:
No-cache copy disabled:
79571 tps, 34.34 %utlization
50/90/95% latency 1584.46 2319.59 5001.76
No-cache copy enabled:
83856 tps, 34.81% utilization
50/90/95% latency 2508.42 2622.62 2735.88
Note especially the effect on latency tail (95th percentile).
This seems to provide a nice performance improvement and is
consistent in the tests I ran. Presumably, this would provide
the greatest benfits in the presence of an application workload
stressing the cache and a lot of transmit data happening.

In case the device where is coming from the packet has TSO enabled,
we should not check the mtu size value as this one could be bigger
than the expected value.
This is the case for the macvlan driver when the lower device has
TSO enabled. The macvlan inherit this feature and forward the packets
without fragmenting them. Then the packets go through dev_forward_skb
and are dropped. This patch fix this by checking TSO is not enabled
when we want to check the mtu size.

The headers of pktgen were incorrectly added in a pktgen packet
without frags (frags=0). There was an offset in the pktgen headers.
The cause was in reusing the pgh variable as a return variable in skb_put
when adding the payload to the skb.

Since a8f80e8ff9 any process with
CAP_NET_ADMIN may load any module from /lib/modules/. This doesn't mean
that CAP_NET_ADMIN is a superset of CAP_SYS_MODULE as modules are
limited to /lib/modules/**. However, CAP_NET_ADMIN capability shouldn't
allow anybody load any module not related to networking.
This patch restricts an ability of autoloading modules to netdev modules
with explicit aliases. This fixes CVE-2011-1019.
Arnd Bergmann suggested to leave untouched the old pre-v2.6.32 behavior
of loading netdev modules by name (without any prefix) for processes
with CAP_SYS_MODULE to maintain the compatibility with network scripts
that use autoloading netdev modules by aliases like "eth0", "wlan0".
Currently there are only three users of the feature in the upstream
kernel: ipip, ip_gre and sit.

If the root qdisc for a net device is mqprio, and the driver's
ndo_setup_tc() operation dynamically adds and remvoes TX queues,
netif_set_real_num_tx_queues() will be called during device
unregistration to remove the extra TX queues when the qdisc is
destroyed. Currently this causes the corresponding kobjects

In commit aa94210411 ("net: init ingress
queue") we moved the allocation and lock initialization of the queues
into alloc_netdev_mq() since register_netdevice() is way too late.
The problem is that dev->type is not setup until the setup()
callback is invoked by alloc_netdev_mq(), and the dev->type is
what determines the lockdep class to use for the locks in the
queues.
Fix this by doing the queue allocation after the setup() callback
runs.
This is safe because the setup() callback is not allowed to make any
state changes that need to be undone on error (memory allocations,
etc.). It may, however, make state changes that are undone by
free_netdev() (such as netif_napi_add(), which is done by the
ipoib driver's setup routine).
The previous code also leaked a reference to the &init_net namespace
object on RX/TX queue allocation failures.

On older kernels the VLAN code may zero skb->dev before dropping
it and causing it to be reused by GRO.
Unfortunately we didn't reset skb->dev in that case which causes
the next GRO user to get a bogus skb->dev pointer.
This particular problem no longer happens with the current upstream
kernel due to changes in VLAN processing.
However, for correctness we should still reset the skb->dev pointer
in the GRO reuse function in case a future user does the same thing.

Routing metrics are now copy-on-write.
Initially a route entry points it's metrics at a read-only location.
If a routing table entry exists, it will point there. Else it will
point at the all zero metric place-holder called 'dst_default_metrics'.
The writeability state of the metrics is stored in the low bits of the
metrics pointer, we have two bits left to spare if we want to store
more states.
For the initial implementation, COW is implemented simply via kmalloc.
However future enhancements will change this to place the writable
metrics somewhere else, in order to increase sharing. Very likely
this "somewhere else" will be the inetpeer cache.
Note also that this means that metrics updates may transiently fail
if we cannot COW the metrics successfully.
But even by itself, this patch should decrease memory usage and
increase cache locality especially for routing workloads. In those
cases the read-only metric copies stay in place and never get written
to.
TCP workloads where metrics get updated, and those rare cases where
PMTU triggers occur, will take a very slight performance hit. But
that hit will be alleviated when the long-term writable metrics
move to a more sharable location.
Since the metrics storage went from a u32 array of RTAX_MAX entries to
what is essentially a pointer, some retooling of the dst_entry layout
was necessary.
Most importantly, we need to preserve the alignment of the reference
count so that it doesn't share cache lines with the read-mostly state,
as per Eric Dumazet's alignment assertion checks.
The only non-trivial bit here is the move of the 'flags' member into
the writeable cacheline. This is OK since we are always accessing the
flags around the same moment when we made a modification to the
reference count.

Allow drivers for multiqueue hardware with flow filter tables to
accelerate RFS. The driver must:
1. Set net_device::rx_cpu_rmap to a cpu_rmap of the RX completion
IRQs (in queue order). This will provide a mapping from CPUs to the
queues for which completions are handled nearest to them.
2. Implement net_device_ops::ndo_rx_flow_steer. This operation adds
or replaces a filter steering the given flow to the given RX queue, if
possible.

Suppose that several linear skbs of the same flow were received by GRO. They
were thus merged into one skb with a frag_list. Then a new skb of the same flow
arrives, but it is a paged skb with data starting in its frags[].
Before adding the skb to the frag_list skb_gro_receive() will of course adjust
the skb to throw away the headers. It correctly modifies the page_offset and
size of the frag, but it leaves incorrect information in the skb:
->data_len is not decreased at all.
->len is decreased only by headlen, as if no change were done to the frag.
Later in a receiving process this causes skb_copy_datagram_iovec() to return
-EFAULT and this is seen in userspace as the result of the recv() syscall.
In practice the bug can be reproduced with the sfc driver. By default the
driver uses an adaptive scheme when it switches between using
napi_gro_receive() (with skbs) and napi_gro_frags() (with pages). The bug is
reproduced when under rx load with enough successful GRO merging the driver
decides to switch from the former to the latter.
Manual control is also possible, so reproducing this is easy with netcat:
- on machine1 (with sfc): nc -l 12345 > /dev/null
- on machine2: nc machine1 12345 < /dev/zero
- on machine1:
echo 1 > /sys/module/sfc/parameters/rx_alloc_method # use skbs
echo 2 > /sys/module/sfc/parameters/rx_alloc_method # use pages
- See that nc has quit suddenly.

This patch provides a mechanism for lower layer devices to
steer traffic using skb->priority to tx queues. This allows
for hardware based QOS schemes to use the default qdisc without
incurring the penalties related to global state and the qdisc
lock. While reliably receiving skbs on the correct tx ring
to avoid head of line blocking resulting from shuffling in
the LLD. Finally, all the goodness from txq caching and xps/rps
can still be leveraged.
Many drivers and hardware exist with the ability to implement
QOS schemes in the hardware but currently these drivers tend
to rely on firmware to reroute specific traffic, a driver
specific select_queue or the queue_mapping action in the
qdisc.
By using select_queue for this drivers need to be updated for
each and every traffic type and we lose the goodness of much
of the upstream work. Firmware solutions are inherently
inflexible. And finally if admins are expected to build a
qdisc and filter rules to steer traffic this requires knowledge
of how the hardware is currently configured. The number of tx
queues and the queue offsets may change depending on resources.
Also this approach incurs all the overhead of a qdisc with filters.
With the mechanism in this patch users can set skb priority using
expected methods ie setsockopt() or the stack can set the priority
directly. Then the skb will be steered to the correct tx queues
aligned with hardware QOS traffic classes. In the normal case with
single traffic class and all queues in this class everything
works as is until the LLD enables multiple tcs.
To steer the skb we mask out the lower 4 bits of the priority
and allow the hardware to configure upto 15 distinct classes
of traffic. This is expected to be sufficient for most applications
at any rate it is more then the 8021Q spec designates and is
equal to the number of prio bands currently implemented in
the default qdisc.
This in conjunction with a userspace application such as
lldpad can be used to implement 8021Q transmission selection
algorithms one of these algorithms being the extended transmission
selection algorithm currently being used for DCB.

This switches skb_need_linearize() to use the features that have
been centrally computed. In doing so, this fixes a problem where
scatter/gather should not be used because the card does not support
checksum offloading on that type of packet. On device registration
we only check that some form of checksum offloading is available if
scatter/gatther is enabled but we must also check at transmission

netif_get_vlan_features() is currently only used by netif_needs_gso(),
so it only concerns itself with GSO features. However, several other
places also should take into account the contents of the packet when
deciding whether to offload to hardware. This generalizes the function
to return features about all of the various forms of offloading. Since
offloads tend to be linked together, this avoids duplicating the logic
in each location (i.e. the scatter/gather code also needs the checksum
logic).

We currently only have software fallback for one type of checksum: the
TCP/UDP one's complement. This means that a protocol that uses hardware
offloading for a different type of checksum (FCoE, SCTP) must directly
check the device's features and do the right thing ahead of time. By
the time we get to dev_can_checksum(), we're only deciding whether to
apply the one algorithm in software or hardware. NETIF_F_HW_CSUM has the
same capabilities as the software version, so we should always use it if
present. The primary advantage of this is multiply tagged vlans can use
hardware checksumming.

Leonardo Chiquitto found poll() could block forever on tcp sockets and
Urgent data was received, if the event flag only contains POLLPRI.
He did a bisection and found commit 4938d7e023 (poll: avoid extra
wakeups in select/poll) was the source of the problem.
Problem is TCP sockets use standard sock_def_readable() function for
their sk_data_ready() handler, and sock_def_readable() doesnt signal
POLLPRI.
Only TCP is affected by the problem. Adding POLLPRI to the list of flags
might trigger unnecessary schedules, but URGENT handling is such a
seldom used feature this seems a good compromise.
Thanks a lot to Leonardo for providing the bisection result and a test
program as well.

[PATCH net-next-2.6] net: timestamp cloned packet in dev_queue_xmit_nit
Now we do one clone of skb if at least one sniffer might take packet,
we also can do the skb timestamping on the clone and let original packet
unchanged.
This is a generalization of commit 8caf153974 (net: sch_netem: Fix an
inconsistency in ingress netem timestamps.)
This way, we can have a good idea when packets are delivered to our
stack (tcpdump -i ifb0), while a tcpdump on original device gives
timestamps right before ingressing.
This also speedup our stack, avoiding taking timestamps if not needed.

*_alloc_skb, causing unnecessary cache misses.
Idea is to add a prefetchw() call to prefetch the first cache line
indicated by skb->data. On systems with Adjacent Cache Line Prefetch,
it's probably two cache lines are prefetched.

Followup of commit b178bb3dfc (net: reorder struct sock fields)
Optimize INET input path a bit further, by :
1) moving sk_refcnt close to sk_lock.
This reduces number of dirtied cache lines by one on 64bit arches (and
64 bytes cache line size).
2) moving inet_daddr & inet_rcv_saddr at the beginning of sk
(same cache line than hash / family / bound_dev_if / nulls_node)
This reduces number of accessed cache lines in lookups by one, and dont
increase size of inet and timewait socks.
inet and tw sockets now share same place-holder for these fields.
Before patch :
offsetof(struct sock, sk_refcnt) = 0x10
offsetof(struct sock, sk_lock) = 0x40
offsetof(struct sock, sk_receive_queue) = 0x60
offsetof(struct inet_sock, inet_daddr) = 0x270
offsetof(struct inet_sock, inet_rcv_saddr) = 0x274
After patch :
offsetof(struct sock, sk_refcnt) = 0x44
offsetof(struct sock, sk_lock) = 0x48
offsetof(struct sock, sk_receive_queue) = 0x68
offsetof(struct inet_sock, inet_daddr) = 0x0
offsetof(struct inet_sock, inet_rcv_saddr) = 0x4

Avoid some atomic ops on dst refcount, calling dev_queue_xmit_nit()
after skb_dst_drop() in dev_hard_start_xmit().
When queueing a packet into af_packet socket, we drop dst anyway.

While doing this analysis, I found a refcount bug in llc, I'll send a
patch for net-2.6
Meanwhile, here is the patch for net-next-2.6
Your patch then can be applied after mine.
Thanks
[PATCH] net: RCU conversion of dev_getbyhwaddr() and arp_ioctl()
dev_getbyhwaddr() was called under RTNL.
Rename it to dev_getbyhwaddr_rcu() and change all its caller to now use
RCU locking instead of RTNL.
Change arp_ioctl() to use RCU instead of RTNL locking.
Note: this fix a dev refcount bug in llc

We added some security checks in commit 57fe93b374
(filter: make sure filters dont read uninitialized memory) to close a
potential leak of kernel information to user.
This added a potential extra cost at run time, while we can perform a
check of the filter itself, to make sure a malicious user doesnt try to
abuse us.
This patch adds a check_loads() function, whole unique purpose is to
make this check, allocating a temporary array of mask. We scan the
filter and propagate a bitmask information, telling us if a load M(K) is
allowed because a previous store M(K) is guaranteed. (So that
sk_run_filter() can possibly not read unitialized memory)
Note: this can uncover application bug, denying a filter attach,
previously allowed.

Pavel Emelyanov tried to fix a race between sk_filter_(de|at)tach and
sk_clone() in commit 47e958eac2
Problem is we can have several clones sharing a common sk_filter, and
these clones might want to sk_filter_attach() their own filters at the
same time, and can overwrite old_filter->rcu, corrupting RCU queues.
We can not use filter->rcu without being sure no other thread could do
the same thing.
Switch code to a more conventional ref-counting technique : Do the
atomic decrement immediately and queue one rcu call back when last
reference is released.

This will also improve handling of ipv6 tcp socket request
backlog when syncookies are not enabled. When backlog
becomes very deep, last quarter of backlog is limited to
validated destinations. Previously only ipv4 implemented
this logic, but now ipv6 does too.
Now we are only one step away from enabling timewait
recycling for ipv6, and that step is simply filling in
the implementation of tcp_v6_get_peer() and
tcp_v6_tw_get_peer().

As David pointed out correctly, updates to af-specific attributes
are currently not atomic. If multiple changes are requested and
one of them fails, previous updates may have been applied already
leaving the link behind in a undefined state.
This patch splits the function parse_link_af() into two functions
validate_link_af() and set_link_at(). validate_link_af() is placed
to validate_linkmsg() check for errors as early as possible before
any changes to the link have been made. set_link_af() is called to
commit the changes later.
This method is not fail proof, while it is currently sufficient
to make set_link_af() inerrable and thus 100% atomic, the
validation function method will not be able to detect all error
scenarios in the future, there will likely always be errors
depending on states which are f.e. not protected by rtnl_mutex
and thus may change between validation and setting.
Also, instead of silently ignoring unknown address families and
config blocks for address families which did not register a set
function the errors EAFNOSUPPORT respectively EOPNOSUPPORT are
returned to avoid comitting 4 out of 5 update requests without
notifying the user.

This patch implements transmit packet steering (XPS) for multiqueue
devices. XPS selects a transmit queue during packet transmission based
on configuration. This is done by mapping the CPU transmitting the
packet to a queue. This is the transmit side analogue to RPS-- where
RPS is selecting a CPU based on receive queue, XPS selects a queue
based on the CPU (previously there was an XPS patch from Eric
Dumazet, but that might more appropriately be called transmit completion
steering).
Each transmit queue can be associated with a number of CPUs which will
use the queue to send packets. This is configured as a CPU mask on a
per queue basis in:
/sys/class/net/eth<n>/queues/tx-<n>/xps_cpus
The mappings are stored per device in an inverted data structure that
maps CPUs to queues. In the netdevice structure this is an array of
num_possible_cpu structures where each structure holds and array of
queue_indexes for queues which that CPU can use.
The benefits of XPS are improved locality in the per queue data
structures. Also, transmit completions are more likely to be done
nearer to the sending thread, so this should promote locality back
to the socket on free (e.g. UDP). The benefits of XPS are dependent on
cache hierarchy, application load, and other factors. XPS would
nominally be configured so that a queue would only be shared by CPUs
which are sharing a cache, the degenerative configuration woud be that
each CPU has it's own queue.
Below are some benchmark results which show the potential benfit of
this patch. The netperf test has 500 instances of netperf TCP_RR test
with 1 byte req. and resp.

In dev_pick_tx, don't do work in calculating queue
index or setting
the index in the sock unless the device has more than one queue. This
allows the sock to be set only with a queue index of a multi-queue
device which is desirable if device are stacked like in a tunnel.
We also allow the mapping of a socket to queue to be changed. To
maintain in order packet transmission a flag (ooo_okay) has been
added to the sk_buff structure. If a transport layer sets this flag
on a packet, the transmit queue can be changed for the socket.
Presumably, the transport would set this if there was no possbility
of creating OOO packets (for instance, there are no packets in flight
for the socket). This patch includes the modification in TCP output
for setting this flag.

Remove pc variable to avoid arithmetic to compute fentry at each filter
instruction. Jumps directly manipulate fentry pointer.
As the last instruction of filter[] is guaranteed to be a RETURN, and
all jumps are before the last instruction, we dont need to check filter
bounds (number of instructions in filter array) at each iteration, so we
remove it from sk_run_filter() params.
On x86_32 remove f_k var introduced in commit 57fe93b374
(filter: make sure filters dont read uninitialized memory)
Note : We could use a CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_{FEW|MANY}_REGISTERS in order to
avoid too many ifdefs in this code.
This helps compiler to use cpu registers to hold fentry and A
accumulator.
On x86_32, this saves 401 bytes, and more important, sk_run_filter()
runs much faster because less register pressure (One less conditional
branch per BPF instruction)
