Iterating over the netdev hash table for netlink dumps is hard.
Dumps are done in "chunks" so we need to save the position
after each chunk, so we know where to restart from. Because
netdevs are stored in a hash table we remember which bucket
we were in and how many devices we dumped.
Since we don't hold any locks across the "chunks" - devices may
come and go while we're dumping. If that happens we may miss
a device (if device is deleted from the bucket we were in).
We indicate to user space that this may have happened by setting
NLM_F_DUMP_INTR. User space is supposed to dump again (I think)
if it sees that. Somehow I doubt most user space gets this right..
To illustrate let's look at an example:
System state:
start: # [A, B, C]
del: B # [A, C]
with the hash table we may dump [A, B], missing C completely even
tho it existed both before and after the "del B".
Add an xarray and use it to allocate ifindexes. This way we
can iterate ifindexes in order, without the worry that we'll
skip one. We may still generate a dump of a state which "never
existed", for example for a set of values and sequence of ops:
System state:
start: # [A, B]
add: C # [A, C, B]
del: B # [A, C]
we may generate a dump of [A], if C got an index between A and B.
System has never been in such state. But I'm 90% sure that's perfectly
fine, important part is that we can't _miss_ devices which exist before
and after. User space which wants to mirror kernel's state subscribes
to notifications and does periodic dumps so it will know that C exists
from the notification about its creation or from the next dump
(next dump is _guaranteed_ to include C, if it doesn't get removed).
To avoid any perf regressions keep the hash table for now. Most
net namespaces have very few devices and microbenchmarking 1M lookups
on Skylake I get the following results (not counting loopback
to number of devs):
#devs | hash | xa | delta
2 | 18.3 | 20.1 | + 9.8%
16 | 18.3 | 20.1 | + 9.5%
64 | 18.3 | 26.3 | +43.8%
128 | 20.4 | 26.3 | +28.6%
256 | 20.0 | 26.4 | +32.1%
1024 | 26.6 | 26.7 | + 0.2%
8192 |541.3 | 33.5 | -93.8%
No surprises since the hash table has 256 entries.
The microbenchmark scans indexes in order, if the pattern is more
random xa starts to win at 512 devices already. But that's a lot
of devices, in practice.

Commit ffa84b5ffb ("net: add netns refcount tracker to struct sock")
added a tracker to sockets, but did not track kernel sockets.
We still have syzbot reports hinting about netns being destroyed
while some kernel TCP sockets had not been dismantled.
This patch tracks kernel sockets, and adds a ref_tracker_dir_print()
call to net_free() right before the netns is freed.
Normally, each layer is responsible for properly releasing its
kernel sockets before last call to net_free().
This debugging facility is enabled with CONFIG_NET_NS_REFCNT_TRACKER=y

To improve hardware offload debuggability count pending 'add', 'del' and
'stats' flow_table offload workqueue tasks. Counters are incremented before
scheduling new task and decremented when workqueue handler finishes
executing. These counters allow user to diagnose congestion on hardware
offload workqueues that can happen when either CPU is starved and workqueue
jobs are executed at lower rate than new ones are added or when
hardware/driver can't keep up with the rate.
Implement the described counters as percpu counters inside new struct
netns_ft which is stored inside struct net. Expose them via new procfs file
'/proc/net/stats/nf_flowtable' that is similar to existing 'nf_conntrack'
file.

This commit adds a per netns hash table for AF_UNIX, which size is fixed
as UNIX_HASH_SIZE for now.
The first implementation defines a per-netns hash table as a single array
of lock and list:
struct unix_hashbucket {
spinlock_t lock;
struct hlist_head head;
};
struct netns_unix {
struct unix_hashbucket *hash;
...
};
But, Eric pointed out memory cost that the structure has holes because of
sizeof(spinlock_t), which is 4 (or more if LOCKDEP is enabled). [0] It
could be expensive on a host with thousands of netns and few AF_UNIX
sockets. For this reason, a per-netns hash table uses two dense arrays.
struct unix_table {
spinlock_t *locks;
struct hlist_head *buckets;
};
struct netns_unix {
struct unix_table table;
...
};
Note the length of the list has a significant impact rather than lock
contention, so having shared locks can be an option. But, per-netns
locks and lists still perform better than the global locks and per-netns
lists. [1]
Also, this patch adds a change so that struct netns_unix disappears from
struct net if CONFIG_UNIX is disabled.

While testing a patch that will follow later
("net: add netns refcount tracker to struct nsproxy")
I found that devtmpfs_init() was called before init_net
was initialized.
This is a bug, because devtmpfs_setup() calls
ksys_unshare(CLONE_NEWNS);
This has the effect of increasing init_net refcount,
which will be later overwritten to 1, as part of setup_net(&init_net)
We had too many prior patches [1] trying to work around the root cause.
Really, make sure init_net is in BSS section, and that net_ns_init()
is called earlier at boot time.
Note that another patch ("vfs: add netns refcount tracker
to struct fs_context") also will need net_ns_init() being called
before vfs_caches_init()
As a bonus, this patch saves around 4KB in .data section.

We have 100+ syzbot reports about netns being dismantled too soon,
still unresolved as of today.
We think a missing get_net() or an extra put_net() is the root cause.
In order to find the bug(s), and be able to spot future ones,
this patch adds CONFIG_NET_NS_REFCNT_TRACKER and new helpers
to precisely pair all put_net() with corresponding get_net().
To use these helpers, each data structure owning a refcount
should also use a "netns_tracker" to pair the get and put.

Netfilter updates for net-next
The following batch contains Netfilter/IPVS updates for your net-next tree:
1) Simplify log infrastructure modularity: Merge ipv4, ipv6, bridge,
netdev and ARP families to nf_log_syslog.c. Add module softdeps.
This fixes a rare deadlock condition that might occur when log
module autoload is required. From Florian Westphal.
2) Moves part of netfilter related pernet data from struct net to
net_generic() infrastructure. All of these users can be modules,
so if they are not loaded there is no need to waste space. Size
reduction is 7 cachelines on x86_64, also from Florian.
2) Update nftables audit support to report events once per table,
to get it aligned with iptables. From Richard Guy Briggs.
3) Check for stale routes from the flowtable garbage collector path.
This is fixing IPv6 which breaks due missing check for the dst_cookie.
4) Add a nfnl_fill_hdr() function to simplify netlink + nfnetlink
headers setup.
5) Remove documentation on several statified functions.
6) Remove printk on netns creation for the FTP IPVS tracker,
from Florian Westphal.
7) Remove unnecessary nf_tables_destroy_list_lock spinlock
initialization, from Yang Yingliang.
7) Remove a duplicated forward declaration in ipset,
from Wan Jiabing.

Namespaces may of course have additional unrelated counters and

- Peilin's fix adding three byte padding to Dmitry's

- Two smal patches to convert from the /* fall through */ comment

With its use in BPF, the cookie generator can be called very frequently
in particular when used out of cgroup v2 hooks (e.g. connect / sendmsg)
and attached to the root cgroup, for example, when used in v1/v2 mixed
environments. In particular, when there's a high churn on sockets in the
system there can be many parallel requests to the bpf_get_socket_cookie()
and bpf_get_netns_cookie() helpers which then cause contention on the
atomic counter.
As similarly done in f991bd2e14 ("fs: introduce a per-cpu last_ino
allocator"), add a small helper library that both can use for the 64 bit
counters. Given this can be called from different contexts, we also need
to deal with potential nested calls even though in practice they are
considered extremely rare. One idea as suggested by Eric Dumazet was
to use a reverse counter for this situation since we don't expect 64 bit
overflows anyways; that way, we can avoid bigger gaps in the 64 bit
counter space compared to just batch-wise increase. Even on machines
with small number of cores (e.g. 4) the cookie generation shrinks from
min/max/med/avg (ns) of 22/50/40/38.9 down to 10/35/14/17.3 when run
in parallel from multiple CPUs.

only the "count" counter is. So the latter is moved into struct ns_common.
Currently every namespace type has its own lifetime counter which is stored
in the specific namespace struct. The lifetime counters are used
identically for all namespaces types. Namespaces may of course have
additional unrelated counters and these are not altered.
This introduces a common lifetime counter into struct ns_common. The
ns_common struct encompasses information that all namespaces share. That
should include the lifetime counter since its common for all of them.
It also allows us to unify the type of the counters across all namespaces.
Most of them use refcount_t but one uses atomic_t and at least one uses
kref. Especially the last one doesn't make much sense since it's just a
wrapper around refcount_t since 2016 and actually complicates cleanup
operations by having to use container_of() to cast the correct namespace
struct out of struct ns_common.
Having the lifetime counter for the namespaces in one place reduces
maintenance cost. Not just because after switching all namespaces over we
will have removed more code than we added but also because the logic is
more easily understandable and we indicate to the user that the basic
lifetime requirements for all namespaces are currently identical.

In order to:
(1) attach more than one BPF program type to netns, or
(2) support attaching BPF programs to netns with bpf_link, or
(3) support multi-prog attach points for netns
we will need to keep more state per netns than a single pointer like we
have now for BPF flow dissector program.
Prepare for the above by extracting netns_bpf that is part of struct net,
for storing all state related to BPF programs attached to netns.
Turn flow dissector callbacks for querying/attaching/detaching a program
into generic ones that operate on netns_bpf. Next patch will move the
generic callbacks into their own module.
This is similar to how it is organized for cgroup with cgroup_bpf.

Conversion of FIB entries to work with external nexthop objects
missed an important difference between IPv4 and IPv6 - how dst
entries are invalidated when the FIB changes. IPv4 has a per-network
namespace generation id (rt_genid) that is bumped on changes to the FIB.
Checking if a dst_entry is still valid means comparing rt_genid in the
rtable to the current value of rt_genid for the namespace.
IPv6 also has a per network namespace counter, fib6_sernum, but the
count is saved per fib6_node. With the per-node counter only dst_entries
based on fib entries under the node are invalidated when changes are
made to the routes - limiting the scope of invalidations. IPv6 uses a
reference in the rt6_info, 'from', to track the corresponding fib entry
used to create the dst_entry. When validating a dst_entry, the 'from'
is used to backtrack to the fib6_node and check the sernum of it to the
cookie passed to the dst_check operation.
With the inline format (nexthop definition inline with the fib6_info),
dst_entries cached in the fib6_nh have a 1:1 correlation between fib
entries, nexthop data and dst_entries. With external nexthops, IPv6
looks more like IPv4 which means multiple fib entries across disparate
fib6_nodes can all reference the same fib6_nh. That means validation
of dst_entries based on external nexthops needs to use the IPv4 format
- the per-network namespace counter.
Add sernum to rt6_info and set it when creating a pcpu dst entry. Update
rt6_get_cookie to return sernum if it is set and update dst_check for
IPv6 to look for sernum set and based the check on it if so. Finally,
rt6_get_pcpu_route needs to validate the cached entry before returning
a pcpu entry (similar to the rt_cache_valid calls in __mkroute_input and
__mkroute_output for IPv4).
This problem only affects routes using the new, external nexthops.
Thanks to the kbuild test robot for catching the IS_ENABLED needed
around rt_genid_ipv6 before I sent this out.

In Cilium we're mainly using BPF cgroup hooks today in order to implement
kube-proxy free Kubernetes service translation for ClusterIP, NodePort (*),
ExternalIP, and LoadBalancer as well as HostPort mapping [0] for all traffic
between Cilium managed nodes. While this works in its current shape and avoids
packet-level NAT for inter Cilium managed node traffic, there is one major
limitation we're facing today, that is, lack of netns awareness.
In Kubernetes, the concept of Pods (which hold one or multiple containers)
has been built around network namespaces, so while we can use the global scope
of attaching to root BPF cgroup hooks also to our advantage (e.g. for exposing
NodePort ports on loopback addresses), we also have the need to differentiate
between initial network namespaces and non-initial one. For example, ExternalIP
services mandate that non-local service IPs are not to be translated from the
host (initial) network namespace as one example. Right now, we have an ugly
work-around in place where non-local service IPs for ExternalIP services are
not xlated from connect() and friends BPF hooks but instead via less efficient
packet-level NAT on the veth tc ingress hook for Pod traffic.
On top of determining whether we're in initial or non-initial network namespace
we also have a need for a socket-cookie like mechanism for network namespaces
scope. Socket cookies have the nice property that they can be combined as part
of the key structure e.g. for BPF LRU maps without having to worry that the
cookie could be recycled. We are planning to use this for our sessionAffinity
implementation for services. Therefore, add a new bpf_get_netns_cookie() helper
which would resolve both use cases at once: bpf_get_netns_cookie(NULL) would
provide the cookie for the initial network namespace while passing the context
instead of NULL would provide the cookie from the application's network namespace.
We're using a hole, so no size increase; the assignment happens only once.
Therefore this allows for a comparison on initial namespace as well as regular
cookie usage as we have today with socket cookies. We could later on enable
this helper for other program types as well as we would see need.

In rtnl_net_notifyid(), we certainly can't pass a null GFP flag to
rtnl_notify(). A GFP_KERNEL flag would be fine in most circumstances,
but there are a few paths calling rtnl_net_notifyid() from atomic
context or from RCU critical sections. The later also precludes the use
of gfp_any() as it wouldn't detect the RCU case. Also, the nlmsg_new()
call is wrong too, as it uses GFP_KERNEL unconditionally.
Therefore, we need to pass the GFP flags as parameter and propagate it
through function calls until the proper flags can be determined.
In most cases, GFP_KERNEL is fine. The exceptions are:
* openvswitch: ovs_vport_cmd_get() and ovs_vport_cmd_dump()
indirectly call rtnl_net_notifyid() from RCU critical section,
* rtnetlink: rtmsg_ifinfo_build_skb() already receives GFP flags as
parameter.
Also, in ovs_vport_cmd_build_info(), let's change the GFP flags used
by nlmsg_new(). The function is allowed to sleep, so better make the
flags consistent with the ones used in the following
ovs_vport_cmd_fill_info() call.

Indeed, every time a new TCP socket is created or deleted,
the atomic counter net->count is touched (via get_net(net)

So cpus might have to reload a contended cache line in
net_hash_mix(net) calls.
We need to reorder 'struct net' fields to move @hash_mix
in a read mostly cache line.
We move in the first cache line fields that can be

Generating and retrieving socket cookies are a useful feature that is
exposed to BPF for various program types through bpf_get_socket_cookie()
helper.
The fact that the cookie counter is per netns is quite a limitation
for BPF in practice in particular for programs in host namespace that
use socket cookies as part of a map lookup key since they will be
causing socket cookie collisions e.g. when attached to BPF cgroup hooks
or cls_bpf on tc egress in host namespace handling container traffic
from veth or ipvlan devices with peer in different netns. Change the
counter to be global instead.
Socket cookie consumers must assume the value as opqaue in any case.
Not every socket must have a cookie generated and knowledge of the
counter value itself does not provide much value either way hence
conversion to global is fine.

discouraged to call synchronize_rcu().
There are cases where we need them, and exit_batch() does
not help the common case where a single netns is dismantled.
This patch leverages the existing synchronize_rcu() call

Calling optional ->pre_exit() method before ->exit() or

path. The BPF program is per-network namespace.

Make net_ns_get_ownership() reusable by networking code outside of core.
This is useful, for example, to allow bridge related sysfs files to be
owned by container root.
Add a function comment since this is a potentially dangerous function to
use given the way that kobject_get_ownership() works by initializing uid
and gid before calling .get_ownership().

It is a waste of memory to use a full "struct netns_sysctl_ipv6"
while only one pointer is really used, considering netns_sysctl_ipv6
keeps growing.
Also, since "struct netns_frags" has cache line alignment,
it is better to move the frags_hdr pointer outside, otherwise
we spend a full cache line for this pointer.
This saves 192 bytes of memory per netns.

rtnl_lock() is used everywhere, and contention is very high.
When someone wants to iterate over alive net namespaces,
he/she has no a possibility to do that without exclusive lock.
But the exclusive rtnl_lock() in such places is overkill,
and it just increases the contention. Yes, there is already
for_each_net_rcu() in kernel, but it requires rcu_read_lock(),
and this can't be sleepable. Also, sometimes it may be need
really prevent net_namespace_list growth, so for_each_net_rcu()
is not fit there.
This patch introduces new rw_semaphore, which will be used
instead of rtnl_mutex to protect net_namespace_list. It is
sleepable and allows not-exclusive iterations over net
namespaces list. It allows to stop using rtnl_lock()
in several places (what is made in next patches) and makes
less the time, we keep rtnl_mutex. Here we just add new lock,
while the explanation of we can remove rtnl_lock() there are
in next patches.
Fine grained locks generally are better, then one big lock,
so let's do that with net_namespace_list, while the situation
allows that.
