This patch does additional coding style fixup. Initially the code is being
distorted by Lindent (in my patches sent not very long ago) and fixed in
the followup patches but this stuff was accidently missed.
New and old compiled files were compared with cmp to check for being
identically. So the patch will not break the kernel.

Slab constructors currently have a flags parameter that is never used. And
the order of the arguments is opposite to other slab functions. The object
pointer is placed before the kmem_cache pointer.

Convert udf to new aops. Also seem to have fixed pagecache corruption in
udf_adinicb_commit_write -- page was marked uptodate when it is not. Also,
fixed the silly setup where prepare_write was doing a kmap to be used in
commit_write: just do kmap_atomic in write_end. Use libfs helpers to make
this easier.

Fix possible NULL pointer dereference when freeing blocks in case table of
free space is used. Also fix handling of the case when we need to move
extent from one block to another one to make space for indirect extent.
BTW: Nobody seem to have ever used this code.

If UDF superblock is incorrect, we can fail to find a table of free /
allocated space and consequently Oops. Handle this situation more
gracefully by ignoring the broken UDF partition.

This patch fix weird behaviour of UDF mounting procedure. To get UID
changed (for now) we have to type
mount -t udf -o uid=some_user,uid=ignore /dev/device /mnt/moun_point
and specifying two uid at once is strange a bit. So with the patch we are
able to mount without additional 'uid=ignore' option. The same for GID
option is done.
This patch will not break current mount scheme (with two option).
Btw this does fix (I hope) the following
[BUG 6124] mount of UDF fs ignores UID and GID options

Slab destructors were no longer supported after Christoph's
c59def9f22 change. They've been
BUGs for both slab and slub, and slob never supported them
either.
This rips out support for the dtor pointer from kmem_cache_create()
completely and fixes up every single callsite in the kernel (there were
about 224, not including the slab allocator definitions themselves,
or the documentation references).

This patch adds checking for granted memory while filling up inode data to
prevent possible NULL pointer usage. If there is not enough memory to fill
inode data we just mark it as "bad". Also some whitespace cleanup.

We have to take care that when we call udf_discard_prealloc() from
udf_clear_inode() we have to write inode ourselves afterwards (otherwise,
some changes might be lost leading to leakage of blocks, use of free blocks
or improperly aligned extents).
Also udf_discard_prealloc() does two different things - it removes
preallocated blocks and truncates the last extent to exactly match i_size.
We move the latter functionality to udf_truncate_tail_extent(), call
udf_discard_prealloc() when last reference to a file is dropped and call
udf_truncate_tail_extent() when inode is being removed from inode cache
(udf_clear_inode() call).
We cannot call udf_truncate_tail_extent() earlier as subsequent open+write
would find the last block of the file mapped and happily write to the end
of it, although the last extent says it's shorter.

update_next_aext() could possibly rewrite values in elen and eloc, possibly
leading to data corruption when rewriting a file. Use temporary variables

First thing mm.h does is including sched.h solely for can_do_mlock() inline
function which has "current" dereference inside. By dealing with can_do_mlock()
mm.h can be detached from sched.h which is good. See below, why.
This patch
a) removes unconditional inclusion of sched.h from mm.h
b) makes can_do_mlock() normal function in mm/mlock.c
c) exports can_do_mlock() to not break compilation
d) adds sched.h inclusions back to files that were getting it indirectly.
e) adds less bloated headers to some files (asm/signal.h, jiffies.h) that were
getting them indirectly
Net result is:
a) mm.h users would get less code to open, read, preprocess, parse, ... if
they don't need sched.h
b) sched.h stops being dependency for significant number of files:
on x86_64 allmodconfig touching sched.h results in recompile of 4083 files,
after patch it's only 3744 (-8.3%).

Make UDF work correctly for files larger than 1GB. As no extent can be
longer than (1<<30)-blocksize bytes, we have to create several extents if a
big hole is being created. As a side-effect, we now don't discard
preallocated blocks when creating a hole.

Use sector_t and loff_t for file offsets in UDF filesystem. Otherwise an
overflow may occur for long files. Also make inode_bmap() return offset in
the extent in number of blocks instead of number of bytes - for most
callers this is more convenient.

It appears that a minor thinko occurred in udf_rmdir and the
(already-cleared) link count on the directory that is being removed was
being decremented instead of the link count on its parent directory. This
gives rise to lots of kernel messages similar to:
UDF-fs warning (device loop1): udf_rmdir: empty directory has nlink != 2 (8)
when removing directory trees. No other ill effects have been observed but
I guess it could theoretically result in the link count overflowing on a
very long-lived, much modified directory.

I have never seen a use of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL. It is only supported by
SLAB.
I think its purpose was to have a callback after an object has been freed
to verify that the state is the constructor state again? The callback is
performed before each freeing of an object.
I would think that it is much easier to check the object state manually
before the free. That also places the check near the code object
manipulation of the object.
Also the SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL callback is only performed if the kernel was
compiled with SLAB debugging on. If there would be code in a constructor
handling SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL then it would have to be conditional on
SLAB_DEBUG otherwise it would just be dead code. But there is no such code
in the kernel. I think SLUB_DEBUG_INITIAL is too problematic to make real
use of, difficult to understand and there are easier ways to accomplish the
same effect (i.e. add debug code before kfree).
There is a related flag SLAB_CTOR_VERIFY that is frequently checked to be
clear in fs inode caches. Remove the pointless checks (they would even be
pointless without removeal of SLAB_DEBUG_INITIAL) from the fs constructors.
This is the last slab flag that SLUB did not support. Remove the check for
unimplemented flags from SLUB.

Many struct inode_operations in the kernel can be "const". Marking them const
moves these to the .rodata section, which avoids false sharing with potential
dirty data. In addition it'll catch accidental writes at compile time to
these shared resources.

When a filesystem decrements i_nlink to zero, it means that a write must be
performed in order to drop the inode from the filesystem.
We're shortly going to have keep filesystems from being remounted r/o between
the time that this i_nlink decrement and that write occurs.
So, add a little helper function to do the decrements. We'll tie into it in a
bit to note when i_nlink hits zero.

This patch cleans up generic_file_*_read/write() interfaces. Christoph
Hellwig gave me the idea for this clean ups.
In a nutshell, all filesystems should set .aio_read/.aio_write methods and use
do_sync_read/ do_sync_write() as their .read/.write methods. This allows us
to cleanup all variants of generic_file_* routines.
Final available interfaces:

There's a bug where a UDF_PART_FLAG_READ_ONLY udf partition gets mounted
read-write, then subsequent problems happen; files seem to be able to be
removed, but file creation results in EIO or worse, oops.
EIO is coming from udf_new_block(), which returns EIO if the right flags
aren't set; only UDF_PART_FLAG_READ_ONLY is set in this case. We probably
s hould not have gotten this far...
Attached patch seems to fix it - and includes a printk to alert the user
that their "rw" mount request has been converted to "ro."
Here's the testcase I used:

This eliminates the i_blksize field from struct inode. Filesystems that want
to provide a per-inode st_blksize can do so by providing their own getattr
routine instead of using the generic_fillattr() function.
Note that some filesystems were providing pretty much random (and incorrect)
values for i_blksize.

* Those who check it printk something, however, slab_error already printed
the name of failed cache.

low-level filesystem driver should make. Converted to ignore.

UDF code is not really ready to handle extents larger that 1GB. This is
the easy way to forbid creating those.
Also truncation code did not count with the case when there are no
extents in the file and we are extending the file.

the udf_discard_prealloc() path was examining uninitialized fields of the
udf inode.
udf_discard_prealloc() already has this code to short-circuit the discard
path if no extents are preallocated:

Give the statfs superblock operation a dentry pointer rather than a superblock
pointer.
This complements the get_sb() patch. That reduced the significance of
sb->s_root, allowing NFS to place a fake root there. However, NFS does
require a dentry to use as a target for the statfs operation. This permits
the root in the vfsmount to be used instead.
linux/mount.h has been added where necessary to make allyesconfig build
successfully.
Interest has also been expressed for use with the FUSE and XFS filesystems.

Extend the get_sb() filesystem operation to take an extra argument that
permits the VFS to pass in the target vfsmount that defines the mountpoint.
The filesystem is then required to manually set the superblock and root dentry
pointers. For most filesystems, this should be done with simple_set_mnt()
which will set the superblock pointer and then set the root dentry to the
superblock's s_root (as per the old default behaviour).
The get_sb() op now returns an integer as there's now no need to return the
superblock pointer.
This patch permits a superblock to be implicitly shared amongst several mount
points, such as can be done with NFS to avoid potential inode aliasing. In
such a case, simple_set_mnt() would not be called, and instead the mnt_root
and mnt_sb would be set directly.
The patch also makes the following changes:
(*) the get_sb_*() convenience functions in the core kernel now take a vfsmount
pointer argument and return an integer, so most filesystems have to change
very little.
(*) If one of the convenience function is not used, then get_sb() should
normally call simple_set_mnt() to instantiate the vfsmount. This will
always return 0, and so can be tail-called from get_sb().
(*) generic_shutdown_super() now calls shrink_dcache_sb() to clean up the
dcache upon superblock destruction rather than shrink_dcache_anon().
This is required because the superblock may now have multiple trees that
aren't actually bound to s_root, but that still need to be cleaned up. The
currently called functions assume that the whole tree is rooted at s_root,
and that anonymous dentries are not the roots of trees which results in
dentries being left unculled.
However, with the way NFS superblock sharing are currently set to be
implemented, these assumptions are violated: the root of the filesystem is
simply a dummy dentry and inode (the real inode for '/' may well be
inaccessible), and all the vfsmounts are rooted on anonymous[*] dentries
with child trees.
[*] Anonymous until discovered from another tree.
(*) The documentation has been adjusted, including the additional bit of
changing ext2_* into foo_* in the documentation.

This is a conversion to make the various file_operations structs in fs/
const. Basically a regexp job, with a few manual fixups
The goal is both to increase correctness (harder to accidentally write to
shared datastructures) and reducing the false sharing of cachelines with
things that get dirty in .data (while .rodata is nicely read only and thus
cache clean)

As Pekka Enberg pointed out, with the if still following the else, you can
still get a null uid written to the disk if you specify a default uid= without
uid=forget. In other words, if the desktop user is uid=1000 and the mount
option uid=1000 is given ( which is done on ubuntu automatically and probably
other distributions that use hal ), then if any other user besides uid 1000
owns a file then a 0 will be written to the media as the owning uid instead.

Mark file system inode and similar slab caches subject to SLAB_MEM_SPREAD
memory spreading.
If a slab cache is marked SLAB_MEM_SPREAD, then anytime that a task that's
in a cpuset with the 'memory_spread_slab' option enabled goes to allocate
from such a slab cache, the allocations are spread evenly over all the
memory nodes (task->mems_allowed) allowed to that task, instead of favoring
allocation on the node local to the current cpu.

The choice of which slab caches to so mark was quite simple. I marked
those already marked SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT, except for fs/xfs, dentry_cache,
inode_cache, and buffer_head, which were marked in a previous patch. Even
though SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT is for a different purpose, it marks the same
potentially large file system i/o related slab caches as we need for memory
spreading.
Given that the rule now becomes "wherever you would have used a
SLAB_RECLAIM_ACCOUNT slab cache flag before (usually the inode cache), use
the SLAB_MEM_SPREAD flag too", this should be easy enough to maintain.
Future file system writers will just copy one of the existing file system
slab cache setups and tend to get it right without thinking.

Fix a bug in udf where it would write uid/gid = 0 to the disk for files
owned by the id given with the uid=/gid= mount options. It also adds 4 new
mount options: uid/gid=forget and uid/gid=ignore. Without any options the
id in core and on disk always match. Giving uid/gid=nnn specifies a
default ID to be used in core when the on disk ID is -1. uid/gid=ignore
forces the in core ID to allways be used no matter what the on disk ID is.
uid/gid=forget forces the on disk ID to always be written out as -1.
The use of these options allows you to override ownerships on a disk or
disable ownwership information from being written, allowing the media to be
used portably between different computers and possibly different users
without permissions issues that would require root to correct.

A few more callers of permission() just want to check for a different access
pattern on an already open file. This patch adds a wrapper for permission()
that takes a file in preparation of per-mount read-only support and to clean
up the callers a little. The helper is not intended for new code, everything
without the interface set in stone should use vfs_permission()

Update the file systems in fs/ implementing a delete_inode() callback to
call truncate_inode_pages(). One implementation note: In developing this
patch I put the calls to truncate_inode_pages() at the very top of those
filesystems delete_inode() callbacks in order to retain the previous
behavior. I'm guessing that some of those could probably be optimized.

Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history,
even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git
archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about
3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early
git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good
infrastructure for it.
