Merge branch 'signal-for-v5.17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. The original postings of these changes can be found at: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/87a6ha4zsd.fsf@email.froward.int.ebiederm.org https://lkml.kernel.org/r/87bl1kunjj.fsf@email.froward.int.ebiederm.org https://lkml.kernel.org/r/87r19opkx1.fsf_-_@email.froward.int.ebiederm.org I trimmed back the last set of changes to only the obviously correct once. include: move find.h from asm_generic to linux
find_bit API and bitmap API are closely related, but inclusion paths are different - include/asm-generic and include/linux, correspondingly. rtc: Check return value from mc146818_get_time()
There are 4 users of mc146818_get_time() and none of them was checking the return value from this function. Change this. Print the appropriate warnings in callers of mc146818_get_time() instead of in the function mc146818_get_time() itself, in order not to add strings to rtc-mc146818-lib.c, which is kind of a library. The callers of alpha_rtc_read_time() and cmos_read_time() may use the contents of (struct rtc_time *) even when the functions return a failure code. Therefore, set the contents of (struct rtc_time *) to 0x00, which looks more sensible then 0xff and aligns with the (possibly stale?) comment in cmos_read_time: /* * If pm_trace abused the RTC for storage, set the timespec to 0, * which tells the caller that this RTC value is unusable. */ For consistency, do this in mc146818_get_time(). Note: hpet_rtc_interrupt() may call mc146818_get_time() many times a second. It is very unlikely, though, that the RTC suddenly stops working and mc146818_get_time() would consistently fail. Only compile-tested on alpha. exit: Add and use make_task_dead.
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

locking: Allow to include asm/spinlock_types.h from linux/spinlock_types_raw.h
The printk header file includes ratelimit_types.h for its __ratelimit() based usage. It is required for the static initializer used in printk_ratelimited(). It uses a raw_spinlock_t and includes the spinlock_types.h. PREEMPT_RT substitutes spinlock_t with a rtmutex based implementation and so its spinlock_t implmentation (provided by spinlock_rt.h) includes rtmutex.h and atomic.h which leads to recursive includes where defines are missing. alpha: Snapshot thread flags
Some thread flags can be set remotely, and so even when IRQs are disabled, the flags can change under our feet. Generally this is unlikely to cause a problem in practice, but it is somewhat unsound, and KCSAN will legitimately warn that there is a data race. To avoid such issues, a snapshot of the flags has to be taken prior to using them. Some places already use READ_ONCE() for that, others do not. Convert them all to the new flag accessor helpers. audit: replace magic audit syscall class numbers with macros
Replace audit syscall class magic numbers with macros. This required putting the macros into new header file include/linux/audit_arch.h since the syscall macros were included for both 64 bit and 32 bit in any compat code, causing redefinition warnings. alpha: move __udiv_qrnnd library function to arch/alpha/lib/
We already had the implementation for __udiv_qrnnd (unsigned divide for multi-precision arithmetic) as part of the alpha math emulation code. But you can disable the math emulation code - even if you shouldn't - and then the MPI code that actually wants this functionality (and is needed by various crypto functions) will fail to build. So move the extended-precision divide code to be a regular library function, just like all the regular division code is. That way ie is available regardless of math-emulation. alpha: mark 'Jensen' platform as no longer broken
Ok, it almost certainly is still broken on actual hardware, but the
immediate reason for it having been marked BROKEN was a build error that
is fixed by just making sure the low-level IO header file is included
sufficiently early that the __EXTERN_INLINE hackery takes effect.
This was marked broken back in 2017 by commit
|
||
Linus Torvalds
|
cc9d3aaa53 |
alpha: make 'Jensen' IO functions build again
The Jensen IO functions are overly copmplicated because some of the IO addresses refer to special 'local IO' ports, and they get accessed differently. That then makes gcc not actually inline them, and since they were marked "extern inline" when included through the regular <asm/io.h> path, and then only marked "inline" when included from sys_jensen.c, you never necessarily got a body for the IO functions at all. The intent of the sys_jensen.c code is to actually get the non-inlined copy generated, so remove the 'inline' from the magic macro that is supposed to sort this all out. Also, do not mix 'extern inline' functions (that may or may not be inlined and will not generate a function body if they are not) with 'static inline' (that _will_ generate a function body when not inlined). Because gcc will complain about this situation: error: ‘jensen_bus_outb’ is static but used in inline function ‘jensen_outb’ which is not static because gcc basically doesn't know whether to generate a body for that static inline function or not for that call site. So make all of these use that __EXTERN_INLINE marker. Gcc will generally not inline these things on use, and then generate the function body out-of-line in sys_jensen.c. This makes the core IO functions build for the alpha Jensen config. Not that the rest then builds, because it turns out Jensen also doesn't enable PCI, which then makes other drievrs very unhappy, but that's a separate issue. alpha: Declare virt_to_phys and virt_to_bus parameter as pointer to volatile
Some drivers pass a pointer to volatile data to virt_to_bus() and virt_to_phys(), and that works fine. One exception is alpha. asm-generic changes for 5.15
The main content for 5.15 is a series that cleans up the handling of strncpy_from_user() and strnlen_user(), removing a lot of slightly incorrect versions of these in favor of the lib/strn*.c helpers that implement these correctly and more efficiently. The only architectures that retain a private version now are mips, ia64, um and parisc. I had offered to convert those at all, but Thomas Bogendoerfer wanted to keep the mips version for the moment until he had a chance to do regression testing. Merge branch 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.15' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull exit cleanups from Eric Biederman: "In preparation of doing something about PTRACE_EVENT_EXIT I have started cleaning up various pieces of code related to do_exit. Most of that code I did not manage to get tested and reviewed before the merge window opened but a handful of very useful cleanups are ready to be merged. The first change is simply the removal of the bdflush system call. The code has now been disabled long enough that even the oldest userspace working userspace setups anyone can find to test are fine with the bdflush system call being removed. Changing m68k fsp040_die to use force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) instead of calling do_exit directly is interesting only in that it is nearly the most difficult of the incorrect uses of do_exit to remove. The change to the seccomp code to simply send a signal instead of calling do_coredump directly is a very nice little cleanup made possible by realizing the existing signal sending helpers were missing a little bit of functionality that is easy to provide" * 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.15' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: signal/seccomp: Dump core when there is only one live thread signal/seccomp: Refactor seccomp signal and coredump generation signal/m68k: Use force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) in fpsp040_die exit/bdflush: Remove the deprecated bdflush system call |

Pull siginfo si_trapno updates from Eric Biederman: "The full set of si_trapno changes was not appropriate as a fix for the newly added SIGTRAP TRAP_PERF, and so I postponed the rest of the related cleanups. This is the rest of the cleanups for si_trapno that reduces it from being a really weird arch special case that is expect to be always present (but isn't) on the architectures that support it to being yet another field in the _sigfault union of struct siginfo. sock: allow reading and changing sk_userlocks with setsockopt
SOCK_SNDBUF_LOCK and SOCK_RCVBUF_LOCK flags disable automatic socket buffers adjustment done by kernel (see tcp_fixup_rcvbuf() and tcp_sndbuf_expand()). If we've just created a new socket this adjustment is enabled on it, but if one changes the socket buffer size by setsockopt(SO_{SND,RCV}BUF*) it becomes disabled. CRIU needs to call setsockopt(SO_{SND,RCV}BUF*) on each socket on restore as it first needs to increase buffer sizes for packet queues restore and second it needs to restore back original buffer sizes. So after CRIU restore all sockets become non-auto-adjustable, which can decrease network performance of restored applications significantly. CRIU need to be able to restore sockets with enabled/disabled adjustment to the same state it was before dump, so let's add special setsockopt for it. Let's also export SOCK_SNDBUF_LOCK and SOCK_RCVBUF_LOCK flags to uAPI so that using these interface one can reenable automatic socket buffer adjustment on their sockets. asm-generic: reverse GENERIC_{STRNCPY_FROM,STRNLEN}_USER symbols
Most architectures do not need a custom implementation, and in most cases the generic implementation is preferred, so change the polariy on these Kconfig symbols to require architectures to select them when they provide their own version. The new name is CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_{STRNCPY_FROM,STRNLEN}_USER. The remaining architectures at the moment are: ia64, mips, parisc, um and xtensa. We should probably convert these as well, but I was not sure how far to take this series. Thomas Bogendoerfer had some concerns about converting mips but may still do some more detailed measurements to see which version is better. Cc: "James E.J. alpha: Send stop IPI to send to online CPUs
This issue was noticed while debugging a shutdown issue where some secondary CPUs are not being shutdown correctly. A fix for that [1] requires that secondary cpus be offlined using the cpu_online_mask so that the stop operation is a no-op if CPU HOTPLUG is disabled. I, like the author in [1] looked at the architectures and found that alpha is one of two architectures that executes smp_send_stop() on all possible CPUs. On alpha, smp_send_stop() sends an IPI to all possible CPUs but only needs to send them to online CPUs. Send the stop IPI to only the online CPUs. asm-generic/unaligned: Unify asm/unaligned.h around struct helper
The get_unaligned()/put_unaligned() helpers are traditionally architecture specific, with the two main variants being the "access-ok.h" version that assumes unaligned pointer accesses always work on a particular architecture, and the "le-struct.h" version that casts the data to a byte aligned type before dereferencing, for architectures that cannot always do unaligned accesses in hardware. Based on the discussion linked below, it appears that the access-ok version is not realiable on any architecture, but the struct version probably has no downsides. This series changes the code to use the same implementation on all architectures, addressing the few exceptions separately. kernel.h: split out panic and oops helpers
kernel.h is being used as a dump for all kinds of stuff for a long time. Here is the attempt to start cleaning it up by splitting out panic and oops helpers. There are several purposes of doing this: - dropping dependency in bug.h - dropping a loop by moving out panic_notifier.h - unload kernel.h from something which has its own domain At the same time convert users tree-wide to use new headers, although for the time being include new header back to kernel.h to avoid twisted indirected includes for existing users. mm/thp: define default pmd_pgtable()
Currently most platforms define pmd_pgtable() as pmd_page() duplicating the same code all over. Instead just define a default value i.e pmd_page() for pmd_pgtable() and let platforms override when required via <asm/pgtable.h>. All the existing platform that override pmd_pgtable() have been moved into their respective <asm/pgtable.h> header in order to precede before the new generic definition. mm/madvise: introduce MADV_POPULATE_(READ|WRITE) to prefault page tables
I. Background: Sparse Memory Mappings When we manage sparse memory mappings dynamically in user space - also sometimes involving MAP_NORESERVE - we want to dynamically populate/ discard memory inside such a sparse memory region. Example users are hypervisors (especially implementing memory ballooning or similar technologies like virtio-mem) and memory allocators. In addition, we want to fail in a nice way (instead of generating SIGBUS) if populating does not succeed because we are out of backend memory (which can happen easily with file-based mappings, especially tmpfs and hugetlbfs). While MADV_DONTNEED, MADV_REMOVE and FALLOC_FL_PUNCH_HOLE allow for reliably discarding memory for most mapping types, there is no generic approach to populate page tables and preallocate memory. Although mmap() supports MAP_POPULATE, it is not applicable to the concept of sparse memory mappings, where we want to populate/discard dynamically and avoid expensive/problematic remappings. In addition, we never actually report errors during the final populate phase - it is best-effort only. fallocate() can be used to preallocate file-based memory and fail in a safe way. However, it cannot really be used for any private mappings on anonymous files via memfd due to COW semantics. In addition, fallocate() does not actually populate page tables, so we still always get pagefaults on first access - which is sometimes undesired (i.e., real-time workloads) and requires real prefaulting of page tables, not just a preallocation of backend storage. There might be interesting use cases for sparse memory regions along with mlockall(MCL_ONFAULT) which fallocate() cannot satisfy as it does not prefault page tables. II. On preallcoation/prefaulting from user space Because we don't have a proper interface, what applications (like QEMU and databases) end up doing is touching (i.e., reading+writing one byte to not overwrite existing data) all individual pages. However, that approach 1) Can result in wear on storage backing, because we end up reading/writing each page; this is especially a problem for dax/pmem. 2) Can result in mmap_sem contention when prefaulting via multiple threads. 3) Requires expensive signal handling, especially to catch SIGBUS in case of hugetlbfs/shmem/file-backed memory. For example, this is problematic in hypervisors like QEMU where SIGBUS handlers might already be used by other subsystems concurrently to e.g, handle hardware errors. "Simply" doing preallocation concurrently from other thread is not that easy. III. On MADV_WILLNEED Extending MADV_WILLNEED is not an option because 1. It would change the semantics: "Expect access in the near future." and "might be a good idea to read some pages" vs. "Definitely populate/ preallocate all memory and definitely fail on errors.". 2. Existing users (like virtio-balloon in QEMU when deflating the balloon) don't want populate/prealloc semantics. They treat this rather as a hint to give a little performance boost without too much overhead - and don't expect that a lot of memory might get consumed or a lot of time might be spent. IV. MADV_POPULATE_READ and MADV_POPULATE_WRITE Let's introduce MADV_POPULATE_READ and MADV_POPULATE_WRITE, inspired by MAP_POPULATE, with the following semantics: 1. MADV_POPULATE_READ can be used to prefault page tables just like manually reading each individual page. This will not break any COW mappings. The shared zero page might get mapped and no backend storage might get preallocated -- allocation might be deferred to write-fault time. Especially shared file mappings require an explicit fallocate() upfront to actually preallocate backend memory (blocks in the file system) in case the file might have holes. 2. If MADV_POPULATE_READ succeeds, all page tables have been populated (prefaulted) readable once. 3. MADV_POPULATE_WRITE can be used to preallocate backend memory and prefault page tables just like manually writing (or reading+writing) each individual page. This will break any COW mappings -- e.g., the shared zeropage is never populated. 4. If MADV_POPULATE_WRITE succeeds, all page tables have been populated (prefaulted) writable once. 5. MADV_POPULATE_READ and MADV_POPULATE_WRITE cannot be applied to special mappings marked with VM_PFNMAP and VM_IO. Also, proper access permissions (e.g., PROT_READ, PROT_WRITE) are required. If any such mapping is encountered, madvise() fails with -EINVAL. 6. If MADV_POPULATE_READ or MADV_POPULATE_WRITE fails, some page tables might have been populated. 7. MADV_POPULATE_READ and MADV_POPULATE_WRITE will return -EHWPOISON when encountering a HW poisoned page in the range. 8. Similar to MAP_POPULATE, MADV_POPULATE_READ and MADV_POPULATE_WRITE cannot protect from the OOM (Out Of Memory) handler killing the process. While the use case for MADV_POPULATE_WRITE is fairly obvious (i.e., preallocate memory and prefault page tables for VMs), one issue is that whenever we prefault pages writable, the pages have to be marked dirty, because the CPU could dirty them any time. while not a real problem for hugetlbfs or dax/pmem, it can be a problem for shared file mappings: each page will be marked dirty and has to be written back later when evicting. MADV_POPULATE_READ allows for optimizing this scenario: Pre-read a whole mapping from backend storage without marking it dirty, such that eviction won't have to write it back. As discussed above, shared file mappings might require an explciit fallocate() upfront to achieve preallcoation+prepopulation. Although sparse memory mappings are the primary use case, this will also be useful for other preallocate/prefault use cases where MAP_POPULATE is not desired or the semantics of MAP_POPULATE are not sufficient: as one example, QEMU users can trigger preallocation/prefaulting of guest RAM after the mapping was created -- and don't want errors to be silently suppressed. Looking at the history, MADV_POPULATE was already proposed in 2013 [1], however, the main motivation back than was performance improvements -- which should also still be the case. V. Single-threaded performance comparison I did a short experiment, prefaulting page tables on completely *empty mappings/files* and repeated the experiment 10 times. The results correspond to the shortest execution time. In general, the performance benefit for huge pages is negligible with small mappings. V.1: Private mappings POPULATE_READ and POPULATE_WRITE is fastest. Note that Reading/POPULATE_READ will populate the shared zeropage where applicable -- which result in short population times. The fastest way to allocate backend storage (here: swap or huge pages) and prefault page tables is POPULATE_WRITE. V.2: Shared mappings fallocate() is fastest, however, doesn't prefault page tables. POPULATE_WRITE is faster than simple writes and read/writes. POPULATE_READ is faster than simple reads. Without a fd, the fastest way to allocate backend storage and prefault page tables is POPULATE_WRITE. With an fd, the fastest way is usually FALLOCATE+POPULATE_READ or FALLOCATE+POPULATE_WRITE respectively; one exception are actual files: FALLOCATE+Read is slightly faster than FALLOCATE+POPULATE_READ. The fastest way to allocate backend storage prefault page tables is FALLOCATE+POPULATE_WRITE -- except when dealing with actual files; then, FALLOCATE+POPULATE_READ is fastest and won't directly mark all pages as dirty. v.3: Detailed results ================================================== 2 MiB MAP_PRIVATE: ************************************************** Anon 4 KiB : Read : 0.119 ms Anon 4 mm: generalize ZONE_[DMA|DMA32]
ZONE_[DMA|DMA32] configs have duplicate definitions on platforms that subscribe to them. Instead, just make them generic options which can be selected on applicable platforms. Also only x86/arm64 architectures could enable both ZONE_DMA and ZONE_DMA32 if EXPERT, add ARCH_HAS_ZONE_DMA_SET to make dma zone configurable and visible on the two architectures. alpha: remove DISCONTIGMEM and NUMA
Patch series "Remove DISCONTIGMEM memory model", v3. SPARSEMEM memory model was supposed to entirely replace DISCONTIGMEM a (long) while ago. The last architectures that used DISCONTIGMEM were updated to use other memory models in v5.11 and it is about the time to entirely remove DISCONTIGMEM from the kernel. This set removes DISCONTIGMEM from alpha, arc and m68k, simplifies memory model selection in mm/Kconfig and replaces usage of redundant CONFIG_NEED_MULTIPLE_NODES and CONFIG_FLAT_NODE_MEM_MAP with CONFIG_NUMA and CONFIG_FLATMEM respectively. I've also removed NUMA support on alpha that was BROKEN for more than 15 years. There were also minor updates all over arch/ to remove mentions of DISCONTIGMEM in comments and #ifdefs. This patch (of 9): NUMA is marked broken on alpha for more than 15 years and DISCONTIGMEM was replaced with SPARSEMEM in v5.11. Remove both NUMA and DISCONTIGMEM support from alpha. Scheduler udpates for this cycle:
- Changes to core scheduling facilities: - Add "Core Scheduling" via CONFIG_SCHED_CORE=y, which enables coordinated scheduling across SMT siblings. This is a much requested feature for cloud computing platforms, to allow the flexible utilization of SMT siblings, without exposing untrusted domains to information leaks & side channels, plus to ensure more deterministic computing performance on SMT systems used by heterogenous workloads. There's new prctls to set core scheduling groups, which allows more flexible management of workloads that can share siblings. - Fix task->state access anti-patterns that may result in missed wakeups and rename it to ->__state in the process to catch new abuses. - Load-balancing changes: - Tweak newidle_balance for fair-sched, to improve 'memcache'-like workloads. - "Age" (decay) average idle time, to better track & improve workloads such as 'tbench'. - Fix & improve energy-aware (EAS) balancing logic & metrics. - Fix & improve the uclamp metrics. - Fix task migration (taskset) corner case on !CONFIG_CPUSET. - Fix RT and deadline utilization tracking across policy changes - Introduce a "burstable" CFS controller via cgroups, which allows bursty CPU-bound workloads to borrow a bit against their future quota to improve overall latencies & batching. Can be tweaked via /sys/fs/cgroup/cpu/<X>/cpu.cfs_burst_us. - Rework assymetric topology/capacity detection & handling. - Scheduler statistics & tooling: - Disable delayacct by default, but add a sysctl to enable it at runtime if tooling needs it. Use static keys and other optimizations to make it more palatable. - Use sched_clock() in delayacct, instead of ktime_get_ns(). - Misc cleanups and fixes. net: retrieve netns cookie via getsocketopt
It's getting more common to run nested container environments for
testing cloud software. One of such examples is Kind [1] which runs a
Kubernetes cluster in Docker containers on a single host. Each container
acts as a Kubernetes node, and thus can run any Pod (aka container)
inside the former. This approach simplifies testing a lot, as it
eliminates complicated VM setups.
Unfortunately, such a setup breaks some functionality when cgroupv2 BPF
programs are used for load-balancing. The load-balancer BPF program
needs to detect whether a request originates from the host netns or a
container netns in order to allow some access, e.g. to a service via a
loopback IP address. Typically, the programs detect this by comparing
netns cookies with the one of the init ns via a call to
bpf_get_netns_cookie(NULL). However, in nested environments the latter
cannot be used given the Kubernetes node's netns is outside the init ns.
To fix this, we need to pass the Kubernetes node netns cookie to the
program in a different way: by extending getsockopt() with a
SO_NETNS_COOKIE option, the orchestrator which runs in the Kubernetes
node netns can retrieve the cookie and pass it to the program instead.
Thus, this is following up on Eric's commit

mm: arch: remove indirection level in alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable()
In an upcoming change we would like to add a flag to GFP_HIGHUSER_MOVABLE so that it would no longer be an OR of GFP_HIGHUSER and __GFP_MOVABLE. This poses a problem for alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable() which passes __GFP_MOVABLE into an arch-specific __alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() hook which ORs in GFP_HIGHUSER. Since __alloc_zeroed_user_highpage() is only ever called from alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable(), we can remove one level of indirection here. Remove __alloc_zeroed_user_highpage(), make alloc_zeroed_user_highpage_movable() the hook, and use GFP_HIGHUSER_MOVABLE in the hook implementations so that they will pick up the new flag that we are going to add. locking/atomic: alpha: move to ARCH_ATOMIC
We'd like all architectures to convert to ARCH_ATOMIC, as once all architectures are converted it will be possible to make significant cleanups to the atomics headers, and this will make it much easier to generically enable atomic functionality (e.g. debug logic in the instrumented wrappers). As a step towards that, this patch migrates alpha to ARCH_ATOMIC. The arch code provides arch_{atomic,atomic64,xchg,cmpxchg}*(), and common code wraps these with optional instrumentation to provide the regular functions. Note: xchg_local() is NOT currently part of the generic atomic arch_atomic API, and is not instrumented.
