Char/Misc and other driver subsystem changes for 6.10-rc1
Here is the big set of char/misc and other driver subsystem updates for 6.10-rc1. Nothing major here, just lots of new drivers and updates for apis and new hardware types. Included in here are: - big IIO driver updates with more devices and drivers added - fpga driver updates - hyper-v driver updates - uio_pruss driver removal, no one uses it, other drivers control the same hardware now - binder minor updates - mhi driver updates - excon driver updates - counter driver updates - accessability driver updates - coresight driver updates - other hwtracing driver updates - nvmem driver updates - slimbus driver updates - spmi driver updates - other smaller misc and char driver updates All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues. blk-throttle: remove CONFIG_BLK_DEV_THROTTLING_LOW
One the one hand, it's marked EXPERIMENTAL since 2017, and looks like there are no users since then, and no testers and no developers, it's just not active at all. On the other hand, even if the config is disabled, there are still many fields in throtl_grp and throtl_data and many functions that are only used for throtl low. At last, currently blk-throtl is initialized during disk initialization, and destroyed during disk removal, and it exposes many functions to be called directly from block layer. Remove throtl low to make code much more cleaner and follow up work much easier. block: add a partscan sysfs attribute for disks
Userspace had been unknowingly relying on a non-stable interface of kernel internals to determine if partition scanning is enabled for a given disk. Provide a stable interface for this purpose instead. bus: mhi: host: Add sysfs entry to force device to enter EDL
Add sysfs entry to allow users of MHI bus to force device to enter EDL (Emergency Download) mode to download the device firmware. Since there is no guarantee that all the devices will support EDL mode, the sysfs entry is kept as an optional one and will appear only for the supported devices. Controllers supporting the EDL mode are expected to provide edl_trigger() callback that puts the device into EDL mode. Documentation: Mark the 'efivars' sysfs interface as removed
The 'efivars' sysfs interface was removed in commit 0f5b2c69a4cb ("efi: vars: Remove deprecated 'efivars' sysfs interface"), but the ABI documentation was not updated properly. Strip down the documentation file for /sys/firmware/efi/vars to a very basic description of what the interface was about, add a section about the rough removal timeline, and inform the reader about the intended replacement. dmaengine: idxd: add wq driver name support for accel-config user tool
With the possibility of multiple wq drivers that can be bound to the wq, the user config tool accel-config needs a way to know which wq driver to bind to the wq. Introduce per wq driver_name sysfs attribute where the user can indicate the driver to be bound to the wq. This allows accel-config to just bind to the driver using wq->driver_name. dmaengine: idxd: expose fault counters to sysfs
Expose cr_faults and cr_fault_failures counters to the user space. This allows a user app to keep track of how many fault the application is causing with the completion record (CR) and also the number of failures of the CR writeback. Having a high number of cr_fault_failures is bad as the app is submitting descriptors with the CR addresses that are bad. User monitoring daemon may want to consider killing the application as it may be malicious and attempting to flood the device event log. Add support for changing of the event log size. Event log is a feature added to DSA 2.0 hardware to improve error reporting. It supersedes the SWERROR register on DSA 1.0 hardware and hope to prevent loss of reported errors. The error log size determines how many error entries supported for the device. blk-mq: remove hybrid polling
io_uring provides the only way user space can poll completions, and that always sets BLK_POLL_NOSLEEP. This effectively makes hybrid polling dead code, so remove it and everything supporting it. Hybrid polling was effectively killed off with 9650b453a3d4b1, "block: ignore RWF_HIPRI hint for sync dio", but still potentially reachable through io_uring until d729cf9acb93119, "io_uring: don't sleep when polling for I/O", but hybrid polling probably should not have been reachable through that async interface from the beginning. drivers/xen/hypervisor: Expose Xen SIF flags to userspace
/proc/xen is a legacy pseudo filesystem which predates Xen support getting merged into Linux. It has largely been replaced with more normal locations for data (/sys/hypervisor/ for info, /dev/xen/ for user devices). We want to compile xenfs support out of the dom0 kernel. There is one item which only exists in /proc/xen, namely /proc/xen/capabilities with "control_d" being the signal of "you're in the control domain". This ultimately comes from the SIF flags provided at VM start. This patch exposes all SIF flags in /sys/hypervisor/start_flags/ as boolean files, one for each bit, returning '1' if set, '0' otherwise. Two known flags, 'privileged' and 'initdomain', are explicitly named, and all remaining flags can be accessed via generically named files, as suggested by Andrew Cooper. block: save user max_sectors limit
The user can set the max_sectors limit to any valid value via sysfs /sys/block/<dev>/queue/max_sectors_kb attribute. If the device limits are ever rescanned, though, the limit reverts back to the potentially artificially low BLK_DEF_MAX_SECTORS value. Preserve the user's setting as the max_sectors limit as long as it's valid. The user can reset back to defaults by writing 0 to the sysfs file. accessibility: speakup: phonetic spelling while arrowing letter by letter
This patch includes an enhancement requested frequently on the mailing list.[1][2] It adds a variable, cur_phonetic in the spk_vars, which can be set as a module parameter, as well as in /sys/speakup/cur_phonetic. This patch also documents cur_phonetic as a sysfs attribute in sysfs-driver-speakup. When cur_phonetic=1, it causes speakup to speak letters phonetically if paused on the character while arrowing through a word. When a user does not set cur_phonetic to any value, the default value for it would be 0. In current code, the following sysfs attributes are exposed to user to show or update the values: max_read_buffers (max_tokens) read_buffer_limit (token_limit) group/read_buffers_allowed (group/tokens_allowed) group/read_buffers_reserved (group/tokens_reserved) group/use_read_buffer_limit (group/use_token_limit) >From Intel IAA spec [1], Intel IAA does not support Read Buffer allocation control. So these sysfs attributes should not be supported on IAA device. Fix this issue by making these sysfs attributes invisible through is_visible() filter when the device is IAA. dmaengine: idxd: add WQ operation cap restriction support
DSA 2.0 add the capability of configuring DMA ops on a per workqueue basis. This means that certain ops can be disabled by the system administrator for certain wq. By default, all ops are available. A bitmap is used to store the ops due to total op size of 256 bits and it is more convenient to use a range list to specify which bits are enabled. One of the usage to support this is for VM migration between different iteration of devices. The newer ops are disabled in order to allow guest to migrate to a host that only support older ops. Another usage is to restrict the WQ to certain operations for QoS of performance. A sysfs of ops_config attribute is added per wq. It is only usable when the ops_config bit is set under WQ_CAP register. This means that this attribute will return -EOPNOTSUPP on DSA 1.x devices. The expected input is a range list for the bits per operation the WQ supports. The MHI bus supports a standardized hardware reset, which is known as the "SoC Reset". This reset is similar to the reset sysfs for PCI devices - a hardware mechanism to reset the state back to square one. The MHI SoC Reset is described in the spec as a reset of last resort. If some unrecoverable error has occurred where other resets have failed, SoC Reset is the "big hammer" that ungracefully resets the device. This is effectivly the same as yanking the power on the device, and reapplying it. However, depending on the nature of the particular issue, the underlying transport link may remain active and configured. If the link remains up, the device will flag a MHI system error early in the boot process after the reset is executed, which allows the MHI bus to process a fatal error event, and clean up appropiately. While the SoC Reset is generally intended as a means of recovery when all else has failed, it can be useful in non-error scenarios. For example, if the device loads firmware from the host filesystem, the device may need to be fully rebooted inorder to pick up the new firmware. In this scenario, the system administrator may use the soc_reset sysfs to cause the device to pick up the new firmware that the admin placed on the filesystem.
