Commit c462ac288f ("mm: Introduce arch_validate_flags()") added a late
check in mmap_region() to let architectures validate vm_flags. The check
needs to happen after calling ->mmap() as the flags can potentially be
modified during this callback.
If arch_validate_flags() check fails we unmap and free the vma. However,
the error path fails to undo the ->mmap() call that previously succeeded
and depending on the specific ->mmap() implementation this translates to
reference increments, memory allocations and other operations what will
not be cleaned up.
There are several places (mainly device drivers) where this is an issue.
However, one specific example is bpf_map_mmap() which keeps count of the
mappings in map->writecnt. The count is incremented on ->mmap() and then
decremented on vm_ops->close(). When arch_validate_flags() fails this
count is off since bpf_map_mmap_close() is never called.
One can reproduce this issue in arm64 devices with MTE support. Here the
vm_flags are checked to only allow VM_MTE if VM_MTE_ALLOWED has been set
previously. From userspace then is enough to pass the PROT_MTE flag to
mmap() syscall to trigger the arch_validate_flags() failure.

By manually adding some log statements to the vm_ops callbacks we can
confirm that when passing PROT_MTE to mmap() the map->writecnt is off upon
->release():

This patch fixes the above issue by calling vm_ops->close() when the
arch_validate_flags() check fails, after this we can proceed to unmap and
free the vma on the error path.

I botched the stable-specific rewrite of
commit b67fbebd4c ("mmu_gather: Force tlb-flush VM_PFNMAP vmas"):
As Hugh pointed out, unmap_region() actually operates on a list of VMAs,
and the variable "vma" merely points to the first VMA in that list.
So if we want to check whether any of the VMAs we're operating on is
PFNMAP or MIXEDMAP, we have to iterate through the list and check each VMA.

Some drivers rely on having all VMAs through which a PFN might be
accessible listed in the rmap for correctness.
However, on X86, it was possible for a VMA with stale TLB entries
to not be listed in the rmap.
This was fixed in mainline with
commit b67fbebd4c ("mmu_gather: Force tlb-flush VM_PFNMAP vmas"),
but that commit relies on preceding refactoring in
commit 18ba064e42 ("mmu_gather: Let there be one tlb_{start,end}_vma()
implementation") and commit 1e9fdf21a4 ("mmu_gather: Remove per arch
tlb_{start,end}_vma()").
This patch provides equivalent protection without needing that
refactoring, by forcing a TLB flush between removing PTEs in
unmap_vmas() and the call to unlink_file_vma() in free_pgtables().

Patch series "mm/hugetlb: fix write-fault handling for shared mappings", v2.
I observed that hugetlb does not support/expect write-faults in shared
mappings that would have to map the R/O-mapped page writable -- and I
found two case where we could currently get such faults and would
erroneously map an anon page into a shared mapping.
Reproducers part of the patches.
I propose to backport both fixes to stable trees. The first fix needs a
small adjustment.
This patch (of 2):
Staring at hugetlb_wp(), one might wonder where all the logic for shared
mappings is when stumbling over a write-protected page in a shared
mapping. In fact, there is none, and so far we thought we could get away
with that because e.g., mprotect() should always do the right thing and
map all pages directly writable.
Looks like we were wrong:

Above test fails with SIGBUS when there is only a single free hugetlb page.

And worse, with sufficient free hugetlb pages it will map an anonymous page
into a shared mapping, for example, messing up accounting during unmap
and breaking MAP_SHARED semantics:

Reason in this particular case is that vma_wants_writenotify() will
return "true", removing VM_SHARED in vma_set_page_prot() to map pages
write-protected. Let's teach vma_wants_writenotify() that hugetlb does not
support softdirty tracking.

Since the beginning, charged is set to 0 to avoid calling vm_unacct_memory
twice because vm_unacct_memory will be called by above unmap_region. But
since commit 4f74d2c8e8 ("vm: remove 'nr_accounted' calculations from
the unmap_vmas() interfaces"), unmap_region doesn't call vm_unacct_memory
anymore. So charged shouldn't be set to 0 now otherwise the calling to
paired vm_unacct_memory will be missed and leads to imbalanced account.

This is a fix for commit f6795053da ("mm: mmap: Allow for "high"
userspace addresses") for hugetlb.
This patch adds support for "high" userspace addresses that are
optionally supported on the system and have to be requested via a hint
mechanism ("high" addr parameter to mmap).
Architectures such as powerpc and x86 achieve this by making changes to
their architectural versions of hugetlb_get_unmapped_area() function.
However, arm64 uses the generic version of that function.
So take into account arch_get_mmap_base() and arch_get_mmap_end() in
hugetlb_get_unmapped_area(). To allow that, move those two macros out
of mm/mmap.c into include/linux/sched/mm.h
If these macros are not defined in architectural code then they default
to (TASK_SIZE) and (base) so should not introduce any behavioural
changes to architectures that do not define them.
For the time being, only ARM64 is affected by this change.
Catalin (ARM64) said
"We should have fixed hugetlb_get_unmapped_area() as well when we added
support for 52-bit VA. The reason for commit f6795053da was to
prevent normal mmap() from returning addresses above 48-bit by default
as some user-space had hard assumptions about this.
It's a slight ABI change if you do this for hugetlb_get_unmapped_area()
but I doubt anyone would notice. It's more likely that the current
behaviour would cause issues, so I'd rather have them consistent.
Basically when arm64 gained support for 52-bit addresses we did not
want user-space calling mmap() to suddenly get such high addresses,
otherwise we could have inadvertently broken some programs (similar
behaviour to x86 here). Hence we added commit f6795053da. But we
missed hugetlbfs which could still get such high mmap() addresses. So
in theory that's a potential regression that should have bee addressed
at the same time as commit f6795053da (and before arm64 enabled
52-bit addresses)"

__setup() handlers should return 1 if the command line option is handled
and 0 if not (or maybe never return 0; it just pollutes init's
environment). This prevents:
Unknown kernel command line parameters \

Note that there is no warning message if someone enters:

simple_strtoul(). This could be improved by using kstrtoxxx() and
checking for an error.
It appears that having stack_guard_gap == 0 is valid (if unexpected) since
using "stack_guard_gap=0" on the kernel command line does that.

Pull arm64 updates from Will Deacon:
"There's quite a lot of code here, but much of it is due to the
addition of a new PMU driver as well as some arm64-specific selftests
which is an area where we've traditionally been lagging a bit.
In terms of exciting features, this includes support for the Memory
Tagging Extension which narrowly missed 5.9, hopefully allowing
userspace to run with use-after-free detection in production on CPUs
that support it. Work is ongoing to integrate the feature with KASAN
for 5.11.
Another change that I'm excited about (assuming they get the hardware
right) is preparing the ASID allocator for sharing the CPU page-table
with the SMMU. Those changes will also come in via Joerg with the
IOMMU pull.
We do stray outside of our usual directories in a few places, mostly
due to core changes required by MTE. Although much of this has been
Acked, there were a couple of places where we unfortunately didn't get
any review feedback.
Other than that, we ran into a handful of minor conflicts in -next,
but nothing that should post any issues.
Summary:

Armv8.5. Kernel support (via KASAN) is likely to follow in 5.11.

It's because the ->mmap() callback can change vma->vm_file and fput the
original file. But the commit d70cec8983 ("mm: mmap: merge vma after

Similarly to arch_validate_prot() called from do_mprotect_pkey(), an
architecture may need to sanity-check the new vm_flags.
Define a dummy function always returning true. In addition to
do_mprotect_pkey(), also invoke it from mmap_region() prior to updating
vma->vm_page_prot to allow the architecture code to veto potentially
inconsistent vm_flags.

The current split between do_mmap() and do_mmap_pgoff() was introduced in
commit 1fcfd8db7f ("mm, mpx: add "vm_flags_t vm_flags" arg to
do_mmap_pgoff()") to support MPX.
The wrapper function do_mmap_pgoff() always passed 0 as the value of the
vm_flags argument to do_mmap(). However, MPX support has subsequently
been removed from the kernel and there were no more direct callers of
do_mmap(); all calls were going via do_mmap_pgoff().
Simplify the code by removing do_mmap_pgoff() and changing all callers to
directly call do_mmap(), which now no longer takes a vm_flags argument.

Look at the pseudo code below. It's very clear that, the judgement
"!is_file_hugepages(file)" at 3) is duplicated to the one at 1), we can
use "else if" to avoid it. And the assignment "retval = -EINVAL" at 2) is
only needed by the branch 3), because "retval" will be overwritten at 4).
No functional change, but it can reduce the code size. Maybe more clearer?

VMA with VM_GROWSDOWN or VM_GROWSUP flag set can change their size under
mmap_read_lock(). It can lead to race with __do_munmap():

Similar race exists for expand_upwards().
The fix is to avoid downgrading mmap_lock in __do_munmap() if detached
VMAs are next to VM_GROWSDOWN or VM_GROWSUP VMA.

Rename the mmap_sem field to mmap_lock. Any new uses of this lock should
now go through the new mmap locking api. The mmap_lock is still
implemented as a rwsem, though this could change in the future.

On passing requirement to vm_unmapped_area, arch_get_unmapped_area and
arch_get_unmapped_area_topdown did not set align_offset. Internally on
both unmapped_area and unmapped_area_topdown, if info->align_mask is 0,
then info->align_offset was meaningless.
But commit df529cabb7 ("mm: mmap: add trace point of
vm_unmapped_area") always prints info->align_offset even though it is
uninitialized.
Fix this uninitialized value issue by setting it to 0 explicitly.

Even on 64 bit kernel, the mmap failure can happen for a 32 bit task.
Virtual memory space shortage of a task on mmap is reported to userspace
as -ENOMEM. It can be confused as physical memory shortage of overall
system.
The vm_unmapped_area can be called to by some drivers or other kernel core
system like filesystem. In my platform, GPU driver calls to
vm_unmapped_area and the driver returns -ENOMEM even in GPU side shortage.
It can be hard to distinguish which code layer returns the -ENOMEM.
Create mmap trace file and add trace point of vm_unmapped_area.

Currently the arm64 kernel ignores the top address byte passed to brk(),
mmap() and mremap(). When the user is not aware of the 56-bit address
limit or relies on the kernel to return an error, untagging such
pointers has the potential to create address aliases in user-space.
Passing a tagged address to munmap(), madvise() is permitted since the
tagged pointer is expected to be inside an existing mapping.
The current behaviour breaks the existing glibc malloc() implementation
which relies on brk() with an address beyond 56-bit to be rejected by
the kernel.
Remove untagging in the above functions by partially reverting commit
ce18d171cb ("mm: untag user pointers in mmap/munmap/mremap/brk"). In
addition, update the arm64 tagged-address-abi.rst document accordingly.

"The timekeeping and timers departement provides:
- Time namespace support:
If a container migrates from one host to another then it expects
that clocks based on MONOTONIC and BOOTTIME are not subject to
disruption. Due to different boot time and non-suspended runtime
these clocks can differ significantly on two hosts, in the worst
case time goes backwards which is a violation of the POSIX
requirements.
The time namespace addresses this problem. It allows to set offsets
for clock MONOTONIC and BOOTTIME once after creation and before
tasks are associated with the namespace. These offsets are taken
into account by timers and timekeeping including the VDSO.
Offsets for wall clock based clocks (REALTIME/TAI) are not provided
by this mechanism. While in theory possible, the overhead and code
complexity would be immense and not justified by the esoteric
potential use cases which were discussed at Plumbers '18.
The overhead for tasks in the root namespace (ie where host time
offsets = 0) is in the noise and great effort was made to ensure
that especially in the VDSO. If time namespace is disabled in the
kernel configuration the code is compiled out.
Kudos to Andrei Vagin and Dmitry Sofanov who implemented this
feature and kept on for more than a year addressing review
comments, finding better solutions. A pleasant experience.

that the init/suspend/resume ordering is correct.

The ARMv8 64-bit architecture supports execute-only user permissions by
clearing the PTE_USER and PTE_UXN bits, practically making it a mostly
privileged mapping but from which user running at EL0 can still execute.
The downside, however, is that the kernel at EL1 inadvertently reading
such mapping would not trip over the PAN (privileged access never)
protection.
Revert the relevant bits from commit cab15ce604 ("arm64: Introduce
execute-only page access permissions") so that PROT_EXEC implies
PROT_READ (and therefore PTE_USER) until the architecture gains proper
support for execute-only user mappings.
