fed99212ac treewide, serdev: change receive_buf() return type to size_t
receive_buf() is called from ttyport_receive_buf() that expects values
">= 0" from serdev_controller_receive_buf(), change its return type from
ssize_t to size_t.

The need for this clean-up was noticed while fixing a warning, see
commit 94d053942544 ("Bluetooth: btnxpuart: fix recv_buf() return value").
Changing the callback prototype to return an unsigned seems the best way
to document the API and ensure that is properly used.

GNSS drivers implementation of serdev receive_buf() callback return
directly the return value of gnss_insert_raw(). gnss_insert_raw()
returns a signed int, however this is not an issue since the value
returned is always positive, because of the kfifo_in() implementation.
gnss_insert_raw() could be changed to return also an unsigned, however
this is not implemented here as request by the GNSS maintainer Johan
Hovold.

Here is the big set of char/misc and other driver subsystem changes for
6.8-rc1. Lots of stuff in here, but first off, you will get a merge
conflict in drivers/android/binder_alloc.c when merging this tree due to
changing coming in through the -mm tree.

The resolution of the merge issue can be found here:

If there are issues with the merge of this file, please let me know.

Other than lots of binder driver changes (as you can see by the merge
 conflicts) included in here are:
  - lots of iio driver updates and additions
  - spmi driver updates
  - eeprom driver updates
  - firmware driver updates
  - ocxl driver updates

  - nvmem driver updates
  - coresight driver updates
  - platform driver remove callback api changes
  - tags.sh script updates
  - bus_type constant marking cleanups
  - lots of other small driver updates

e1be24b2e1 platform/surface: aggregator: make ssam_bus_type constant and static
Now that the driver core can properly handle constant struct bus_type,
move the ssam_bus_type variable to be a constant structure as well,
placing it into read-only memory which can not be modified at runtime.

It's also never used outside of
drivers/platform/surface/aggregator/bus.c so make it static and don't
export it as no one is using it.

platform/surface: aggregator: fix recv_buf() return value
Serdev recv_buf() callback is supposed to return the amount of bytes
consumed, therefore an int in between 0 and count.

Do not return negative number in case of issue, when
ssam_controller_receive_buf() returns ESHUTDOWN just returns 0, e.g. no
bytes consumed, this keep the exact same behavior as it was before.

This fixes a potential WARN in serdev-ttyport.c:ttyport_receive_buf().

With CONFIG_ACPI enabled for RISC-V, this driver gets enabled

539e0a7f91 platform/surface: aggregator: Allow completion work-items to be executed in parallel
Currently, event completion work-items are restricted to be run strictly
in non-parallel fashion by the respective workqueue. However, this has
lead to some problems:

In some instances, the event notifier function called inside this
completion workqueue takes a non-negligible amount of time to execute.
One such example is the battery event handling code (surface_battery.c),
which can result in a full battery information refresh, involving
further synchronous communication with the EC inside the event handler.
This is made worse if the communication fails spuriously, generally
incurring a multi-second timeout.

Since the event completions are run strictly non-parallel, this blocks
other events from being propagated to the respective subsystems. This
becomes especially noticeable for keyboard and touchpad input, which
also funnel their events through this system. Here, users have reported
occasional multi-second "freezes".

Note, however, that the event handling system was never intended to run
purely sequentially. Instead, we have one work struct per EC/SAM
subsystem, processing the event queue for that subsystem. These work
structs were intended to run in parallel, allowing sequential processing
of work items for each subsystem but parallel processing of work items
across subsystems.

The only restriction to this is the way the workqueue is created.
Therefore, replace create_workqueue() with alloc_workqueue() and do not
restrict the maximum number of parallel work items to be executed on
that queue, resolving any cross-subsystem blockage.

a93e884edf Driver core changes for 6.3-rc1
Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.3-rc1.

There's a lot of changes this development cycle, most of the work falls
 into two different categories:
   - fw_devlink fixes and updates. This has gone through numerous review
cycles and lots of review and testing by lots of different devices.
Hopefully all should be good now, and Saravana will be keeping a
watch for any potential regression on odd embedded systems.
   - driver core changes to work to make struct bus_type able to be moved
into read-only memory (i.e. const) The recent work with Rust has
pointed out a number of areas in the driver core where we are
passing around and working with structures that really do not have
to be dynamic at all, and they should be able to be read-only making
things safer overall. This is the contuation of that work (started
last release with kobject changes) in moving struct bus_type to be
constant. We didn't quite make it for this release, but the
remaining patches will be finished up for the release after this
one, but the groundwork has been laid for this effort.

Other than that we have in here:
   - debugfs memory leak fixes in some subsystems
   - error path cleanups and fixes for some never-able-to-be-hit
     codepaths.
   - cacheinfo rework and fixes
   - Other tiny fixes, full details are in the shortlog

All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported
 problems.

b09ee1cd59 platform/surface: aggregator: Rename top-level request functions to avoid ambiguities
We currently have a struct ssam_request_sync and a function
ssam_request_sync(). While this is valid C, there are some downsides to
it.

One of these is that current Sphinx versions (>= 3.0) cannot
disambiguate between the two (see disucssion and pull request linked
below). It instead emits a "WARNING: Duplicate C declaration" and links
for the struct and function in the resulting documentation link to the
same entry (i.e. both to either function or struct documentation)
instead of their respective own entries.

While we could just ignore that and wait for a fix, there's also a point
to be made that the current naming can be somewhat confusing when
searching (e.g. via grep) or trying to understand the levels of
abstraction at play:

We currently have struct ssam_request_sync and associated functions
ssam_request_sync_[alloc|free|init|wait|...]() operating on this struct.
However, function ssam_request_sync() is one abstraction level above
this. Similarly, ssam_request_sync_with_buffer() is not a function
operating on struct ssam_request_sync, but rather a sibling to
ssam_request_sync(), both using the struct under the hood.

Therefore, rename the top level request functions:

  ssam_request_sync() -> ssam_request_do_sync()
  ssam_request_sync_with_buffer() -> ssam_request_do_sync_with_buffer()
  ssam_request_sync_onstack() -> ssam_request_do_sync_onstack()

2730fc0ab4 platform/surface: aggregator: Add target and source IDs to command trace events
Add command source and target IDs to trace events.

Tracing support for the Surface Aggregator driver was originally
implemented at a time when only two peers were known: Host and SAM. We
now know that there are at least five, with three actively being used
(Host, SAM, KIP; four with Debug if you want to count manually enabling
that interface). So it makes sense to also explicitly name the peers
involved when tracing.

3f88b459a7 platform/surface: aggregator: Improve documentation and handling of message target and source IDs
The `tid_in` and `tid_out` fields of the serial hub protocol command

which it is intended.

Change the naming of those fields accordingly and improve the protocol
documentation. Additionally, introduce an enum containing all currently

ae0fa0a312 platform/surface: aggregator: Ignore command messages not intended for us
It is possible that we (the host/kernel driver) receive command messages
that are not intended for us. Ignore those for now.

The whole story is a bit more complicated: It is possible to enable
debug output on SAM, which is sent via SSH command messages. By default
this output is sent to a debug connector, with its own target ID
(TID=0x03). It is possible to override the target of the debug output
and set it to the host/kernel driver. This, however, does not change the
original target ID of the message. Meaning, we receive messages with
TID=0x03 (debug) but expect to only receive messages with TID=0x00
(host).

The problem is that the different target ID also comes with a different
scope of request IDs. In particular, these do not follow the standard
event rules (i.e. do not fall into a set of small reserved values).
Therefore, current message handling interprets them as responses to
pending requests and tries to match them up via the request ID. However,
these debug output messages are not in fact responses, and therefore
this will at best fail to find the request and at worst pass on the
wrong data as response for a request.

Therefore ignore any command messages not intended for us (host) for
now. We can implement support for the debug messages once we have a
better understanding of them.

Note that this may also provide a bit more stability and avoid some
driver confusion in case any other targets want to talk to us in the
future, since we don't yet know what to do with those as well. A warning
for the dropped messages should suffice for now and also give us a
chance of discovering new targets if they come along without any
potential for bugs/instabilities.

d9a477f643 platform/surface: aggregator: Do not check for repeated unsequenced packets
Currently, we check any received packet whether we have already seen it
previously, regardless of the packet type (sequenced / unsequenced). We
do this by checking the sequence number. This assumes that sequence
numbers are valid for both sequenced and unsequenced packets. However,
this assumption appears to be incorrect.

On some devices, the sequence number field of unsequenced packets (in
particular HID input events on the Surface Pro 9) is always zero. As a
result, the current retransmission check kicks in and discards all but
the first unsequenced packet, breaking (among other things) keyboard and
touchpad input.

Note that we have, so far, only seen packets being retransmitted in
sequenced communication. In particular, this happens when there is an
ACK timeout, causing the EC (or us) to re-send the packet waiting for an
ACK. Arguably, retransmission / duplication of unsequenced packets
should not be an issue as there is no logical condition (such as an ACK
timeout) to determine when a packet should be sent again.

Therefore, remove the retransmission check for unsequenced packets
entirely to resolve the issue.

5c1e88b98c platform/surface: aggregator: Allow notifiers to avoid communication on unregistering
When SSAM client devices have been (physically) hot-removed,
communication attempts with those devices may fail and time out. This
can even extend to event notifiers, due to which timeouts may occur
during device removal, slowing down that process.

Add a parameter to the notifier unregister function that allows skipping
communication with the EC to prevent this. Furthermore, add wrappers for
registering and unregistering notifiers belonging to SSAM client devices
that automatically check if the device has been marked as hot-removed
and communication should be avoided.

Note that non-SSAM client devices can generally not be hot-removed, so
also add a convenience wrapper for those, defaulting to allow
communication.

44acfc22c7 platform/surface: aggregator: Fix initialization order when compiling as builtin module
When building the Surface Aggregator Module (SAM) core, registry, and
other SAM client drivers as builtin modules (=y), proper initialization
order is not guaranteed. Due to this, client driver registration
(triggered by device registration in the registry) races against bus
initialization in the core.

If any attempt is made at registering the device driver before the bus
has been initialized (i.e. if bus initialization fails this race) driver
registration will fail with a message similar to:

Driver surface_battery was unable to register with bus_type surface_aggregator because the bus was not initialized

Switch from module_init() to subsys_initcall() to resolve this issue.
Note that the serdev subsystem uses postcore_initcall() so we are still
able to safely register the serdev device driver for the core.

fc7a6209d5 bus: Make remove callback return void
The driver core ignores the return value of this callback because there
is only little it can do when a device disappears.

This is the final bit of a long lasting cleanup quest where several
buses were converted to also return void from their remove callback.
Additionally some resource leaks were fixed that were caused by drivers
returning an error code in the expectation that the driver won't go
away.

With struct bus_type::remove returning void it's prevented that newly
implemented buses return an ignored error code and so don't anticipate
wrong expectations for driver authors.

4b38a1dcf3 platform/surface: aggregator: Allow enabling of events without notifiers
We can already enable and disable SAM events via one of two ways: either
via a (non-observer) notifier tied to a specific event group, or a
generic event enable/disable request. In some instances, however,
neither method may be desirable.

The first method will tie the event enable request to a specific
notifier, however, when we want to receive notifications for multiple
event groups of the same target category and forward this to the same
notifier callback, we may receive duplicate events, i.e. one event per
registered notifier. The second method will bypass the internal
reference counting mechanism, meaning that a disable request will
disable the event regardless of any other client driver using it, which
may break the functionality of that driver.

To address this problem, add new functions that allow enabling and
disabling of events via the event reference counting mechanism built
into the controller, without needing to register a notifier.

This can then be used in combination with observer notifiers to process
multiple events of the same target category without duplication in the
same callback function.

0e8512fab9 platform/surface: aggregator: Allow registering notifiers without enabling events
Currently, each SSAM event notifier is directly tied to one group of
events. This makes sense as registering a notifier will automatically
take care of enabling the corresponding event group and normally drivers
only need notifications for a very limited number of events, associated
with different callbacks for each group.

However, there are rare cases, especially for debugging, when we want to
get notifications for a whole event target category instead of just a
single group of events in that category. Registering multiple notifiers,
i.e. one per group, may be infeasible due to two issues: a) we might not
know every event enable/disable specification as some events are
auto-enabled by the EC and b) forwarding this to the same callback will
lead to duplicate events as we might not know the full event
specification to perform the appropriate filtering.

This commit introduces observer-notifiers, which are notifiers that are
not tied to a specific event group and do not attempt to manage any
events. In other words, they can be registered without enabling any
event group or incrementing the corresponding reference count and just
act as silent observers, listening to all currently/previously enabled
events based on their match-specification.

Essentially, this allows us to register one single notifier for a full
event target category, meaning that we can process all events of that
target category in a single callback without duplication. Specifically,
this will be used in the cdev debug interface to forward events to
user-space via a device file from which the events can be read.

6cbaee2e10 platform/surface: aggregator: Fix event disable function
Disabling events silently fails due to the wrong command ID being used.
Instead of the command ID for the disable call, the command ID for the
enable call was being used. This causes the disable call to enable the
event instead. As the event is already enabled when we call this
function, the EC silently drops this command and does nothing.

Use the correct command ID for disabling the event to fix this.

03ee318391 platform/surface: aggregator: Make SSAM_DEFINE_SYNC_REQUEST_x define static functions
The SSAM_DEFINE_SYNC_REQUEST_x() macros are intended to reduce
boiler-plate code for SSAM request definitions by defining a wrapper
function for the specified request. The client device variants of those
macros, i.e. SSAM_DEFINE_SYNC_REQUEST_CL_x() in particular rely on the
multi-device (MD) variants, e.g.:

    #define SSAM_DEFINE_SYNC_REQUEST_CL_R(name, rtype, spec...)   \
        SSAM_DEFINE_SYNC_REQUEST_MD_R(__raw_##name, rtype, spec) \
        int name(struct ssam_device *sdev, rtype *ret) \
        { \
            return __raw_##name(sdev->ctrl, sdev->uid.target,     \
                                sdev->uid.instance, ret);         \
        }

This now creates the problem that it is not possible to declare the
generated functions static via

    static SSAM_DEFINE_SYNC_REQUEST_CL_R(...)

as this will only apply to the function defined by the multi-device
macro, i.e. SSAM_DEFINE_SYNC_REQUEST_MD_R(). Thus compiling with
`-Wmissing-prototypes' rightfully complains that there is a 'static'
keyword missing.

To solve this, make all SSAM_DEFINE_SYNC_REQUEST_x() macros define
static functions. Non-client-device macros are also changed for
consistency. In general, we expect those functions to be only used
locally in the respective drivers for the corresponding interfaces, so
having to define a wrapper function to be able to export this should be
the odd case out.

The raw message frame length is unaligned and explicitly marked as
little endian. It should not be accessed without the appropriate
accessor functions. Fix this.

Note that payload.len already contains the correct length after parsing
via sshp_parse_frame(), so we can simply use that instead.

2691d0ae66 platform/surface: aggregator: Fix braces in if condition with unlikely() macro
The braces of the unlikely() macro inside the if condition only cover
the subtraction part, not the whole statement. This causes the result of
the subtraction to be converted to zero or one. While that still works
in this context, it causes static analysis tools to complain (and is
just plain wrong).

Fix the bracket placement and, while at it, simplify the if-condition.
Also add a comment to the if-condition explaining what we expect the
result to be and what happens on the failure path, as it seems to have
caused a bit of confusion.

This commit should not cause any difference in behavior or generated
code.

e5da18d3e6 platform/surface: aggregator: Fix kernel-doc references
Both, ssh_rtl_rx_start() and ssh_rtl_tx_start() functions, do not exist
and have been consolidated into ssh_rtl_start(). Nevertheless,
kernel-doc references the former functions. Replace those references
with references to ssh_rtl_start().
