perf tools: Support MIPS unwinding and dwarf-regs
Map perf APIs (perf_reg_name/get_arch_regstr/unwind__arch_reg_id) with
MIPS specific registers.
[ayan@wavecomp.com: repick this patch for unwinding userstack backtrace
by perf and libunwind on MIPS based CPU.]
[yangtiezhu@loongson.cn: Add sample_reg_masks[] to fix build error,
silence some checkpatch errors and warnings, and also separate the
original patches into two parts (MIPS kernel and perf tools) to merge
easily.]

perf build: Support build BPF skeletons with perf
BPF programs are useful in perf to profile BPF programs. BPF skeleton is by far the easiest way to write BPF tools. Enable building BPF skeletons in util/bpf_skel. A dummy bpf skeleton is added. More bpf skeletons will be added for different use cases. perf tools: Remove LTO compiler options when building perl support
To avoid breaking the build by mixing files compiled with things coming
from distro specific compiler options for perl with the rest of perf,
i.e. to avoid this:
`.gnu.debuglto_.debug_macro' referenced in section `.gnu.debuglto_.debug_macro' of /tmp/build/perf/util/scripting-engines/perf-in.o: defined in discarded section `.gnu.debuglto_.debug_macro[wm4.stdcpredef.h.19.8dc41bed5d9037ff9622e015fb5f0ce3]' of /tmp/build/perf/util/scripting-engines/perf-in.o
Noticed on Fedora 33.

perf tools changes for v5.10: 1st batch
- cgroup improvements for 'perf stat', allowing for compact specification of events and cgroups in the command line. - Support per thread topdown metrics in 'perf stat'. - Support sample-read topdown metric group in 'perf record' - Show start of latency in addition to its start in 'perf sched latency'. - Add min, max to 'perf script' futex-contention output, in addition to avg. - Allow usage of 'perf_event_attr->exclusive' attribute via the new ':e' event modifier. - Add 'snapshot' command to 'perf record --control', using it with Intel PT. - Support FIFO file names as alternative options to 'perf record --control'. - Introduce branch history "streams", to compare 'perf record' runs with 'perf diff' based on branch records and report hot streams. - Support PE executable symbol tables using libbfd, to profile, for instance, wine binaries. - Add filter support for option 'perf ftrace -F/--funcs'. - Allow configuring the 'disassembler_style' 'perf annotate' knob via 'perf config' - Update CascadelakeX and SkylakeX JSON vendor events files. - Add support for parsing perchip/percore JSON vendor events. - Add power9 hv_24x7 core level metric events. - Add L2 prefetch, ITLB instruction fetch hits JSON events for AMD zen1. - Enable Family 19h users by matching Zen2 AMD vendor events. - Use debuginfod in 'perf probe' when required debug files not found locally. - Display negative tid in non-sample events in 'perf script'. - Make GTK2 support opt-in - Add build test with GTK+ - Add missing -lzstd to the fast path feature detection - Add scripts to auto generate 'mmap', 'mremap' string<->id tables for use in 'perf trace'. - Show python test script in verbose mode. - Fix uncore metric expressions - Msan uninitialized use fixes. - Use condition variables in 'perf bench numa' - Autodetect python3 binary in systems without python2. - Support md5 build ids in addition to sha1. - Add build id 'perf test' regression test. - Fix printable strings in python3 scripts. - Fix off by ones in 'perf trace' in arches using libaudit. - Fix JSON event code for events referencing std arch events. - Introduce 'perf test' shell script for Arm CoreSight testing. - Add rdtsc() for Arm64 for used in the PERF_RECORD_TIME_CONV metadata event and in 'perf test tsc'. - 'perf c2c' improvements: Add "RMT Load Hit" metric, "Total Stores", fixes and documentation update. - Fix usage of reloc_sym in 'perf probe' when using both kallsyms and debuginfo files. - Do not print 'Metric Groups:' unnecessarily in 'perf list' - Refcounting fixes in the event parsing code. - Add expand cgroup event 'perf test' entry. - Fix out of bounds CPU map access when handling armv8_pmu events in 'perf stat'. - Add build-id injection 'perf bench' benchmark. - Enter namespace when reading build-id in 'perf inject'. - Do not load map/dso when injecting build-id speeding up the 'perf inject' process. - Add --buildid-all option to avoid processing all samples, just the mmap metadata events. - Add feature test to check if libbfd has buildid support - Add 'perf test' entry for PE binary format support. - Fix typos in power8 PMU vendor events JSON files. - Hide libtraceevent non API functions. Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <acme@redhat.com> Test results: The first ones are container based builds of tools/perf with and without libelf support. Where clang is available, it is also used to build perf with/without libelf, and building with LIBCLANGLLVM=1 (built-in clang) with gcc and clang when clang and its devel libraries are installed. The objtool and samples/bpf/ builds are disabled now that I'm switching from using the sources in a local volume to fetching them from a http server to build it inside the container, to make it easier to build in a container cluster. Those will come back later. Several are cross builds, the ones with -x-ARCH and the android one, and those may not have all the features built, due to lack of multi-arch devel packages, available and being used so far on just a few, like debian:experimental-x-{arm64,mipsel}. The 'perf test' one will perform a variety of tests exercising tools/perf/util/, tools/lib/{bpf,traceevent,etc}, as well as run perf commands with a variety of command line event specifications to then intercept the sys_perf_event syscall to check that the perf_event_attr fields are set up as expected, among a variety of other unit tests. Then there is the 'make -C tools/perf build-test' ones, that build tools/perf/ with a variety of feature sets, exercising the build with an incomplete set of features as well as with a complete one. It is planned to have it run on each of the containers mentioned above, using some container orchestration infrastructure. Get in contact if interested in helping having this in place. $ grep "model name" -m1 /proc/cpuinfo model name: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core Processor $ export networking changes for the 5.10 merge window
Add redirect_neigh() BPF packet redirect helper, allowing to limit stack traversal in common container configs and improving TCP back-pressure. Daniel reports ~10Gbps => ~15Gbps single stream TCP performance gain. Expand netlink policy support and improve policy export to user space. (Ge)netlink core performs request validation according to declared policies. Expand the expressiveness of those policies (min/max length and bitmasks). Allow dumping policies for particular commands. This is used for feature discovery by user space (instead of kernel version parsing or trial and error). Support IGMPv3/MLDv2 multicast listener discovery protocols in bridge. Allow more than 255 IPv4 multicast interfaces. Add support for Type of Service (ToS) reflection in SYN/SYN-ACK packets of TCPv6. In Multi-patch TCP (MPTCP) support concurrent transmission of data on multiple subflows in a load balancing scenario. Enhance advertising addresses via the RM_ADDR/ADD_ADDR options. Support SMC-Dv2 version of SMC, which enables multi-subnet deployments. Allow more calls to same peer in RxRPC. Support two new Controller Area Network (CAN) protocols - CAN-FD and ISO 15765-2:2016. Add xfrm/IPsec compat layer, solving the 32bit user space on 64bit kernel problem. Add TC actions for implementing MPLS L2 VPNs. Improve nexthop code - e.g. handle various corner cases when nexthop objects are removed from groups better, skip unnecessary notifications and make it easier to offload nexthops into HW by converting to a blocking notifier. Support adding and consuming TCP header options by BPF programs, opening the doors for easy experimental and deployment-specific TCP option use. Reorganize TCP congestion control (CC) initialization to simplify life of TCP CC implemented in BPF. Allow BPF programs to call map_update_elem on sockmaps. Add BPF Type Format (BTF) support for type and enum discovery, as well as support for using BTF within the kernel itself (current use is for pretty printing structures). Support listing and getting information about bpf_links via the bpf syscall. Enhance kernel interfaces around NIC firmware update. Allow specifying overwrite mask to control if settings etc. are reset during update; report expected max time operation may take to users; support firmware activation without machine reboot incl. limits of how much impact reset may have (e.g. dropping link or not). Support Marvell Prestera 98DX3255 24-port switch ASICs, as well as 7-port Mediatek MT7531 IP. Add initial support for QCA6390 and IPQ6018 in ath11k WiFi driver, and wcn3680 support in wcn36xx. Improve performance for packets which don't require much offloads on recent Mellanox NICs by 20% by making multiple packets share a descriptor entry. perf python: Autodetect python3 binary
Some distros don't come with python2 and only have python3 available. This causes the "'import perf' in python" self test to fail. This change adds python3 to the list of possible python versions that are autodetected but maintains the priorities for 'python2' and 'python' detection. Python3 has the lowest priority. Committer notes: On a fedora system without python2 packages the 'perf test python' continues to work: # python2 bash: python2: command not found... perf build: Allow nested externs to enable BUILD_BUG() usage
Currently BUILD_BUG() macro is expanded to smth like the following: do { extern void __compiletime_assert_0(void) __attribute__((error("BUILD_BUG failed"))); if (!(!(1))) __compiletime_assert_0(); } while (0); If used in a function body this obviously would produce build errors with -Wnested-externs and -Werror. perf tools: Make GTK2 support opt-in
This is bitrotting, nobody is stepping up to work on it, and since we treat warnings as errors, feature detection is failing in its main, faster test (tools/build/feature/test-all.c) because of the GTK+2 infobar check. So make this opt-in, at some point ditch this if nobody volunteers to take care of this. perf tools: Add optional support for libpfm4
This patch links perf with the libpfm4 library if it is available and LIBPFM4 is passed to the build. The libpfm4 library contains hardware event tables for all processors supported by perf_events. It is a helper library that helps convert from a symbolic event name to the event encoding required by the underlying kernel interface. This library is open-source and available from: http://perfmon2.sf.net. With this patch, it is possible to specify full hardware events by name. Hardware filters are also supported. Events must be specified via the --pfm-events and not -e option. Both options are active at the same time and it is possible to mix and match: $ perf stat --pfm-events inst_retired:any_p:c=1:i -e cycles .... One needs to explicitely ask for its inclusion by using the LIBPFM4 make command line option, ie its opt-in rather than opt-out of feature detection and build support. This is useful to see if, on x86, the legacy libaudit still works, as it is used in architectures that don't have the SYSCALL_TABLE logic and we want to have it tested in 'make -C tools/perf/ build-test'. perf tools: Support Python 3.8+ in Makefile
Python 3.8 changed the output of 'python-config --ldflags' to no longer include the '-lpythonX.Y' flag (this apparently fixed an issue loading modules with a statically linked Python executable). The libpython feature check in linux/build/feature fails if the Python library is not included in FEATURE_CHECK_LDFLAGS-libpython variable. This adds a check in the Makefile to determine if PYTHON_CONFIG accepts the '--embed' flag and passes that flag alongside '--ldflags' if so. tools/perf is the only place the libpython feature check is used. perf tools: Add file-handle feature test
The file handle (FHANDLE) support is configurable so some systems might not have it. So add a config feature item to check it on build time so that we don't add the cgroup tracking feature based on that. Committer notes: Had to make the test use the same construct as its later use in synthetic-events.c, in the next patch in this series. i.e. make it be: struct { struct file_handle fh; uint64_t cgroup_id; } handle; To cope with: CC /tmp/build/perf/util/cloexec.o util/synthetic-events.c:428:22: error: field 'fh' with CC /tmp/build/perf/util/call-path.o variable sized type 'struct file_handle' not at the end of a struct or class is a GNU extension [-Werror,-Wgnu-variable-sized-type-not-at-end] struct file_handle fh; ^ 1 error generated. Deal with this at some point, i.e. investigate if the right thing is to remove that -Wgnu-variable-sized-type-not-at-end from our CFLAGS, for now do the test the same way as it is used looks more sensible. perf tools: Allow to link with libbpf dynamicaly
Currently we support only static linking with kernel's libbpf (tools/lib/bpf). This patch adds libbpf package detection and support to link perf with it dynamically. The libbpf package status is displayed with: $ make VF=1 Auto-detecting system features: ... ... libbpf: [ on ] It's not checked by default, because it's quite new. Once it's on most distros we can switch it on. For the same reason it's not added to the test-all check. Perf does not need advanced version of libbpf, so we can check just for the base bpf_object__open function. Adding new compile variable to detect libbpf package and link bpf dynamically: $ make LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1 ... LINK perf $ ldd perf | grep bpf libbpf.so.0 => /lib64/libbpf.so.0 (0x00007f46818bc000) If libbpf is not installed, build stops with: Makefile.config:486: *** Error: No libbpf devel library found,\ please install libbpf-devel. perf tools: tools/include should come before tools/uapi/include
The next cset will grap const.h copies from the kernel to keep bits.h in sync as it started to use linux/const.h, that in turn includes uapi/linux/const.h. So now we have a file with the same name in tools/include and tools/uapi/include, and one includes the other, we need to have tools/include/uapi/ after tools/include/ for this to work, fix it. perf build: Handle slang being in /usr/include and in /usr/include/slang/
In some distros slang.h may be in a /usr/include 'slang' subdir, so use
the if slang is not explicitely disabled (by using NO_SLANG=1) and its
feature test for the common case (having /usr/include/slang.h) failed,
use the results for the test that checks if it is in slang/slang.h.
Change the only file in perf that includes slang.h to use
HAVE_SLANG_INCLUDE_SUBDIR and forget about this for good.
On a rhel6 system now we have:
$ /tmp/build/perf/perf -vv | grep slang
libslang: [ on ] # HAVE_SLANG_SUPPORT
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/perf | grep libslang
libslang.so.2 => /usr/lib64/libslang.so.2 (0x00007fa2d5a8d000)
$ grep slang /tmp/build/perf/FEATURE-DUMP
feature-libslang=0
feature-libslang-include-subdir=1
$ cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS release 6.10 (Final)
$
While on fedora:29:
$ /tmp/build/perf/perf -vv | grep slang
libslang: [ on ] # HAVE_SLANG_SUPPORT
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/perf | grep slang
libslang.so.2 => /lib64/libslang.so.2 (0x00007f8eb11a7000)
$ grep slang /tmp/build/perf/FEATURE-DUMP
feature-libslang=1
feature-libslang-include-subdir=1
$
$ cat /etc/fedora-release
Fedora release 29 (Twenty Nine)
$
The feature-libslang-include-subdir=1 line is because the 'gettid()'
test was added to test-all.c as the new glibc has an implementation for
that, so we soon should have it not failing, i.e. should be the common
case soon. Perhaps I should move it out till it becomes the norm...

perf tools: Don't hardcode host include path for libslang
Hardcoding /usr/include/slang is fundamentally incompatible with cross
compilation and will lead to the inability for a cross-compiled
environment to properly detect whether slang is available or not.
If /usr/include/slang is necessary that is a distribution specific
knowledge that could be solved with either a standard pkg-config .pc
file (which slang has) or simply overriding CFLAGS accordingly, but the
default perf Makefile should be clean of all of that.

perf cs-etm: Add support for multiple traceID queues
When operating in CPU-wide trace mode with a source/sink topology of N:1 packets with multiple traceID will end up in the same cs_etm_queue. In order to properly decode packets they need to be split in different queues, i.e one queue per traceID. As such add support for multiple traceID per cs_etm_queue by adding a new cs_etm_traceid_queue every time a new traceID is discovered in the trace stream. Thomas Backlund reported that the perf build was failing on the Mageia 7 distro, that is because it uses: cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-disassembler-four-args.make.output /usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib64/libbfd.a(plugin.o): in function `try_load_plugin': /home/iurt/rpmbuild/BUILD/binutils-2.32/objs/bfd/../../bfd/plugin.c:243: undefined reference to `dlopen' /usr/bin/ld: /home/iurt/rpmbuild/BUILD/binutils-2.32/objs/bfd/../../bfd/plugin.c:271: undefined reference to `dlsym' /usr/bin/ld: /home/iurt/rpmbuild/BUILD/binutils-2.32/objs/bfd/../../bfd/plugin.c:256: undefined reference to `dlclose' /usr/bin/ld: /home/iurt/rpmbuild/BUILD/binutils-2.32/objs/bfd/../../bfd/plugin.c:246: undefined reference to `dlerror' as we allow dynamic linking and loading Mageia 7 uses these linker flags: $ rpm --eval %ldflags -Wl,--as-needed -Wl,--no-undefined -Wl,-z,relro -Wl,-O1 -Wl,--build-id -Wl,--enable-new-dtags So add -ldl to this feature LDFLAGS. tools build: Implement libzstd feature check, LIBZSTD_DIR and NO_LIBZSTD defines
Implement libzstd feature check, NO_LIBZSTD and LIBZSTD_DIR defines to override Zstd library sources or disable the feature from the command line: $ make -C tools/perf LIBZSTD_DIR=/path/to/zstd/sources/ clean all $ make -C tools/perf NO_LIBZSTD=1 clean all Auto detection feature status is reported just before compilation starts. If your system has some version of the zstd library preinstalled then the build system finds and uses it during the build. If you still prefer to compile with some other version of zstd library you have capability to refer the compilation to that version using LIBZSTD_DIR define. perf feature detection: Add -lopcodes to feature-libbfd
Both libbfd and libopcodes are distributed with binutil-dev/devel. When libbfd is present, it is OK to assume that libopcodes also present. This has been a safe assumption for bpftool. This patch adds -lopcodes to perf/Makefile.config. libopcodes will be used in the next commit for BPF annotation. perf build: Add missing FEATURE_CHECK_LDFLAGS-libcrypto
When the libcrypto feature test was added we forgot to add its
FEATURE_CHECK_LDFLAGS pointing to the library needed to link with the
test-all.bin feature test fast path binary, so even when it was
introduced we got this:
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.make.output
/usr/bin/ld: /tmp/ccjKeJJU.o: in function `main_test_libcrypto':
/home/acme/git/perf/tools/build/feature/test-libcrypto.c:10: undefined reference to `MD5_Init'
/usr/bin/ld: /home/acme/git/perf/tools/build/feature/test-libcrypto.c:11: undefined reference to `MD5_Update'
/usr/bin/ld: /home/acme/git/perf/tools/build/feature/test-libcrypto.c:12: undefined reference to `MD5_Final'
/usr/bin/ld: /home/acme/git/perf/tools/build/feature/test-libcrypto.c:14: undefined reference to `SHA1'
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-libcrypto.
test-libcrypto.bin test-libcrypto.d test-libcrypto.make.output
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-libcrypto.make.output
$
Fix it, so that we keep the fast path, which, at this point, will fail
with the unwind-ARCH feature tests, that will be fixed in a followup
patch:
$ make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/build/perf
... libcrypto: [ on ]
<SNIP>
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.make.output
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.bin | grep libcrypto
libcrypto.so.1.1 => /lib64/libcrypto.so.1.1 (0x00007f9892805000)
$
$ grep libcrypto /tmp/build/perf/FEATURE-DUMP
feature-libcrypto=1
$
With the unwind-ARCH tests fixed, we now finally manage to get
test-all.bin built and linked with the features it tests, among them the
ones fixed in this patchkit:
$ ldd /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.bin | egrep 'unwind|crypto'
libcrypto.so.1.1 => /lib64/libcrypto.so.1.1 (0x00007f95cf2b8000)

perf unwind: Do not put libunwind-{x86,aarch64} in FEATURE_TESTS_BASIC
As it is not normally available on x86_64 not being tested on test-all.c but being in FEATURE_TESTS_BASIC ends up implying that those features are present, which leads to trying to link with those libraries and a build failure now that test-all.c is finally again building successfully: /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunwind-x86 /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunwind-aarch64 collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status make[3]: *** [Makefile:199: /tmp/build/perf/plugin_jbd2.so] Error 1 make[3]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs.... /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunwind-x86 /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lunwind-aarch64 So remove those features from there and explicitely test them. And then move this patch to just before the last one that allows this to be exposed, so that we keep the tree bisectable. tools build: Add -lrt to FEATURE_CHECK_LDFLAGS-libaio
Since we need it to resolve the AIO symbols, otherwise we fail with:
$ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.make.output

When we added the aio support in 'perf record' only the test-libaio.bin
target got the -lrt, i.e. the feature detection slow path. Fix it.

perf build: Don't unconditionally link the libbfd feature test to -liberty and -lz
Current libbfd feature test unconditionally links against -liberty and -lz. While it's required on some systems (e.g. opensuse), it's completely unnecessary on the others, where only -lbdf is sufficient (debian). This patch streamlines (and renames) the following feature checks: feature-libbfd - only link against -lbfd (debian), see commit |
