4e49ea4a3d block/fs/drivers: remove rw argument from submit_bio
This has callers of submit_bio/submit_bio_wait set the bio->bi_rw
instead of passing it in. This makes that use the same as
generic_make_request and how we set the other bio fields.

be5b82dbfe make ext2_get_page() and friends work without external serialization
Right now ext2_get_page() (and its analogues in a bunch of other filesystems)
relies upon the directory being locked - the way it sets and tests Checked and
Error bits would be racy without that. Switch to a slightly different scheme,
_not_ setting Checked in case of failure. That way the logics becomes
	if Checked => OK
	else if Error => fail
	else if !validate => fail
	else => OK
with validation setting Checked or Error on success and failure resp. and
returning which one had happened. Equivalent to the current logics, but unlike
the current logics not sensitive to the order of set_bit, test_bit getting
reordered by CPU, etc.

09cbfeaf1a mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macros
PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time
ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page
cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE.

This promise never materialized. And unlikely will.

We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to
PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether
PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case,
especially on the border between fs and mm.

Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much
breakage to be doable.

Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are
not.

The changes are pretty straight-forward:

 - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;

 - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>;

 - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN};

 - page_cache_get() -> get_page();

 - page_cache_release() -> put_page();

This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using
script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files.
I've called spatch for them manually.

The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to
PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later.

There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll
fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also
will be addressed with the separate patch.

fe896d1878 mm: introduce page reference manipulation functions
The success of CMA allocation largely depends on the success of
migration and key factor of it is page reference count. Until now, page
reference is manipulated by direct calling atomic functions so we cannot
follow up who and where manipulate it. Then, it is hard to find actual
reason of CMA allocation failure. CMA allocation should be guaranteed
to succeed so finding offending place is really important.

In this patch, call sites where page reference is manipulated are
converted to introduced wrapper function. This is preparation step to
add tracepoint to each page reference manipulation function. With this
facility, we can easily find reason of CMA allocation failure. There is
no functional change in this patch.

In addition, this patch also converts reference read sites. It will
help a second step that renames page._count to something else and
prevents later attempt to direct access to it (Suggested by Andrew).

5d097056c9 kmemcg: account certain kmem allocations to memcg
Mark those kmem allocations that are known to be easily triggered from
userspace as __GFP_ACCOUNT/SLAB_ACCOUNT, which makes them accounted to
memcg. For the list, see below:

 - threadinfo
 - task_struct
 - task_delay_info
 - pid
 - cred
 - mm_struct
 - vm_area_struct and vm_region (nommu)
 - anon_vma and anon_vma_chain
 - signal_struct
 - sighand_struct
 - fs_struct
 - files_struct
 - fdtable and fdtable->full_fds_bits
 - dentry and external_name
 - inode for all filesystems. This is the most tedious part, because
   most filesystems overwrite the alloc_inode method.

The list is far from complete, so feel free to add more objects.
Nevertheless, it should be close to "account everything" approach and
keep most workloads within bounds. Malevolent users will be able to
breach the limit, but this was possible even with the former "account
everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in
fact).

33caf82acf Merge branch 'work.misc' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs
Pull misc vfs updates from Al Viro:
 "All kinds of stuff. That probably should've been 5 or 6 separate
  branches, but by the time I'd realized how large and mixed that bag
  had become it had been too close to -final to play with rebasing.

  Some fs/namei.c cleanups there, memdup_user_nul() introduction and
  switching open-coded instances, burying long-dead code, whack-a-mole
  of various kinds, several new helpers for ->llseek(), assorted
  cleanups and fixes from various people, etc.

  One piece probably deserves special mention - Neil's
  lookup_one_len_unlocked(). Similar to lookup_one_len(), but gets
  called without ->i_mutex and tries to avoid ever taking it. That, of
  course, means that it's not useful for any directory modifications,
  but things like getting inode attributes in nfds readdirplus are fine
  with that. I really should've asked for moratorium on lookup-related
  changes this cycle, but since I hadn't done that early enough... I
  *am* asking for that for the coming cycle, though - I'm going to try
  and get conversion of i_mutex to rwsem with ->lookup() done under lock
  taken shared.

  There will be a patch closer to the end of the window, along the lines
  of the one Linus had posted last May - mechanical conversion of
  ->i_mutex accesses to inode_lock()/inode_unlock()/inode_trylock()/
  inode_is_locked()/inode_lock_nested(). To quote Linus back then:

    |        sed 's/mutex_trylock(&\(.*\)->i_mutex)/inode_trylock(\1)/'
    |
    | with a very few manual fixups
    -----

6b2553918d replace ->follow_link() with new method that could stay in RCU mode
new method: ->get_link(); replacement of ->follow_link(). The differences
are:
	* inode and dentry are passed separately
	* might be called both in RCU and non-RCU mode;
the former is indicated by passing it a NULL dentry.
	* when called that way it isn't allowed to block
and should return ERR_PTR(-ECHILD) if it needs to be called
in non-RCU mode.

It's a flagday change - the old method is gone, all in-tree instances
converted. Conversion isn't hard; said that, so far very few instances
do not immediately bail out when called in RCU mode. That'll change
in the next commits.

kmap() in page_follow_link_light() needed to go - allowing to hold

5c50002963 vfs: remove unused wrapper block_page_mkwrite()
The function currently called "__block_page_mkwrite()" used to be called
"block_page_mkwrite()" until a wrapper for this function was added by:

commit 24da4fab5a ("vfs: Create __block_page_mkwrite() helper passing
	error values back")

This wrapper, the current "block_page_mkwrite()", is currently unused.
__block_page_mkwrite() is used directly by ext4, nilfs2 and xfs.

Remove the unused wrapper, rename __block_page_mkwrite() back to
block_page_mkwrite() and update the comment above block_page_mkwrite().

44fda11460 nilfs2: add a tracepoint for transaction events
This patch adds a tracepoint for transaction events of nilfs. With the
tracepoint, these events can be tracked: begin, abort, commit, trylock,
lock, and unlock. Basically, these events have corresponding functions
e.g. begin event corresponds nilfs_transaction_begin(). The unlock event
is an exception. It corresponds to the iteration in
nilfs_transaction_lock().

Only one tracepoint is introcued: nilfs2_transaction_transition. The
above events are distinguished with newly introduced enum. With this
tracepoint, we can analyse a critical section of segment constructoin.

Sample output by tpoint of perf-tools:
              cp-4457  [000] ...1    63.266220: nilfs2_transaction_transition: sb = ffff8802112b8800 ti = ffff8800bf5ccc58 count = 1 flags = 9 state = BEGIN

5849770383 nilfs2: add a tracepoint for tracking stage transition of segment construction
This patch adds a tracepoint for tracking stage transition of block
collection in segment construction. With the tracepoint, we can analysis
the behavior of segment construction in depth. It would be useful for
bottleneck detection and debugging, etc.

The tracepoint is created with the standard trace API of linux (like ext3,
ext4, f2fs and btrfs). So we can analysis with existing tools easily. Of
course, more detailed analysis will be possible if we can create nilfs
specific analysis tools.

Below is an example of event dump with Brendan Gregg's perf-tools
(https://github.com/brendangregg/perf-tools).  Time consumption between
each stage can be obtained.

$ sudo bin/tpoint nilfs2:nilfs2_collection_stage_transition

For capturing transition correctly, this patch adds wrappers for the
member scnt of nilfs_cstage. With this change, every transition of the
stage can produce trace event in a correct manner.

d0c14a9ee7 nilfs2: free unused dat file blocks during garbage collection
As a nilfs2 volume ages, the amount of available disk space decreases
little by little due to bloat of DAT (disk address translation) metadata
file. Even if we delete all files in a file system and free their block
addresses from the DAT file through a garbage collection, empty DAT blocks
are not freed.

This fixes the issue by extending the deallocator of block addresses so
that empty data blocks and empty bitmap blocks of DAT are deleted.

The following comparison shows the effect of this patch. Each shows disk
amount information of a nilfs2 volume that we cleaned out by deleting all
files and running gc after having filled 90% of its capacity.

da019954dd nilfs2: add helper functions to delete blocks from dat file

71baba4b92 mm, page_alloc: rename __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM
__GFP_WAIT was used to signal that the caller was in atomic context and
could not sleep. Now it is possible to distinguish between true atomic
context and callers that are not willing to sleep. The latter should
clear __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM so kswapd will still wake. As clearing
__GFP_WAIT behaves differently, there is a risk that people will clear the
wrong flags. This patch renames __GFP_WAIT to __GFP_RECLAIM to clearly
indicate what it does -- setting it allows all reclaim activity, clearing
them prevents it.

4246a0b63b block: add a bi_error field to struct bio
Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO:

 (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag
 (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback

The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible
error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent
when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent
bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms
available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors
and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of
them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds
of error returns.

So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct
bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up.

f73c2f1f83 NILFS2: support NFSv2 export
The "fh_len" passed to ->fh_to_* is not guaranteed to be that same as that
returned by encode_fh - it may be larger.

With NFSv2, the filehandle is fixed length, so it may appear longer than
expected and be zero-padded.

So we must test that fh_len is at least some value, not exactly equal to
it.

d8fd150fe3 nilfs2: fix sanity check of btree level in nilfs_btree_root_broken()
The range check for b-tree level parameter in nilfs_btree_root_broken()
is wrong; it accepts the case of "level == NILFS_BTREE_LEVEL_MAX" even
though the level is limited to values in the range of 0 to
(NILFS_BTREE_LEVEL_MAX - 1).

Since the level parameter is read from storage device and used to index
nilfs_btree_path array whose element count is NILFS_BTREE_LEVEL_MAX, it
can cause memory overrun during btree operations if the boundary value
is set to the level parameter on device.

This fixes the broken sanity check and adds a comment to clarify that
the upper bound NILFS_BTREE_LEVEL_MAX is exclusive.

faea2c5311 nilfs2: use inode_set_flags() in nilfs_set_inode_flags()
Use inode_set_flags() to atomically set i_flags instead of clearing out

0ce187c4f3 nilfs2: put out gfp mask manipulation from nilfs_set_inode_flags()
nilfs_set_inode_flags() function adjusts gfp-mask of inode->i_mapping as
well as i_flags, however, this coupling of operations is not appropriate.

For instance, nilfs_ioctl_setflags(), one of three callers of
nilfs_set_inode_flags(), doesn't need to reinitialize the gfp-mask at all.
 In addition, nilfs_new_inode(), another caller of
nilfs_set_inode_flags(), doesn't either because it has already initialized
the gfp-mask.

Only __nilfs_read_inode(), the remaining caller, needs it. So, this moves
the gfp mask manipulation to __nilfs_read_inode() from
nilfs_set_inode_flags().

53a2c3bdf4 nilfs2: improve execution time of NILFS_IOCTL_GET_CPINFO ioctl
The older a filesystem gets, the slower lscp command becomes. This is
because nilfs_cpfile_do_get_cpinfo() function meets more hole blocks

283ee1482f nilfs2: fix deadlock of segment constructor during recovery
According to a report from Yuxuan Shui, nilfs2 in kernel 3.19 got stuck
during recovery at mount time. The code path that caused the deadlock was
as follows:

  nilfs_fill_super()
    load_nilfs()
      nilfs_salvage_orphan_logs()
        * Do roll-forwarding, attach segment constructor for recovery,
          and kick it.

        nilfs_segctor_thread()
          nilfs_segctor_thread_construct()
           * A lock is held with nilfs_transaction_lock()
             nilfs_segctor_do_construct()
               nilfs_segctor_drop_written_files()
                 iput()
                   iput_final()
                     write_inode_now()
                       writeback_single_inode()
                         __writeback_single_inode()
                           do_writepages()
                             nilfs_writepage()
                               nilfs_construct_dsync_segment()
                                 nilfs_transaction_lock() --> deadlock

This can happen if commit 7ef3ff2fea ("nilfs2: fix deadlock of segment
constructor over I_SYNC flag") is applied and roll-forward recovery was
performed at mount time. The roll-forward recovery can happen if datasync
write is done and the file system crashes immediately after that. For
instance, we can reproduce the issue with the following steps:

 < nilfs2 is mounted on /nilfs (device: /dev/sdb1) >
 # dd if=/dev/zero of=/nilfs/test bs=4k count=1 && sync
 # dd if=/dev/zero of=/nilfs/test conv=notrunc oflag=dsync bs=4k
 count=1 && reboot -nfh
 < the system will immediately reboot >
 # mount -t nilfs2 /dev/sdb1 /nilfs

The deadlock occurs because iput() can run segment constructor through
writeback_single_inode() if MS_ACTIVE flag is not set on sb->s_flags. The
above commit changed segment constructor so that it calls iput()
asynchronously for inodes with i_nlink == 0, but that change was
imperfect.

This fixes the another deadlock by deferring iput() in segment constructor
even for the case that mount is not finished, that is, for the case that
MS_ACTIVE flag is not set.

957ed60b53 nilfs2: fix potential memory overrun on inode
Each inode of nilfs2 stores a root node of a b-tree, and it turned out to
have a memory overrun issue:

Each b-tree node of nilfs2 stores a set of key-value pairs and the number
of them (in "bn_nchildren" member of nilfs_btree_node struct), as well as
a few other "bn_*" members.

Since the value of "bn_nchildren" is used for operations on the key-values
within the b-tree node, it can cause memory access overrun if a large
number is incorrectly set to "bn_nchildren".

For instance, nilfs_btree_node_lookup() function determines the range of
binary search with it, and too large "bn_nchildren" leads
nilfs_btree_node_get_key() in that function to overrun.

As for intermediate b-tree nodes, this is prevented by a sanity check
performed when each node is read from a drive, however, no sanity check
has been done for root nodes stored in inodes.

This patch fixes the issue by adding missing sanity check against b-tree
root nodes so that it's called when on-memory inodes are read from ifile,
inode metadata file.

7ef3ff2fea nilfs2: fix deadlock of segment constructor over I_SYNC flag
Nilfs2 eventually hangs in a stress test with fsstress program. This
issue was caused by the following deadlock over I_SYNC flag between
nilfs_segctor_thread() and writeback_sb_inodes():

  nilfs_segctor_thread()
    nilfs_segctor_thread_construct()
      nilfs_segctor_unlock()
        nilfs_dispose_list()
          iput()
            iput_final()
              evict()
                inode_wait_for_writeback()  * wait for I_SYNC flag

  writeback_sb_inodes()
     * set I_SYNC flag on inode->i_state
    __writeback_single_inode()
      do_writepages()
        nilfs_writepages()
          nilfs_construct_dsync_segment()
            nilfs_segctor_sync()
               * wait for completion of segment constructor
    inode_sync_complete()
       * clear I_SYNC flag after __writeback_single_inode() completed

writeback_sb_inodes() calls do_writepages() for dirty inodes after
setting I_SYNC flag on inode->i_state. do_writepages() in turn calls
nilfs_writepages(), which can run segment constructor and wait for its
completion. On the other hand, segment constructor calls iput(), which
can call evict() and wait for the I_SYNC flag on
inode_wait_for_writeback().

Since segment constructor doesn't know when I_SYNC will be set, it
cannot know whether iput() will block or not unless inode->i_nlink has a
non-zero count. We can prevent evict() from being called in iput() by
implementing sop->drop_inode(), but it's not preferable to leave inodes
with i_nlink == 0 for long periods because it even defers file
truncation and inode deallocation. So, this instead resolves the
deadlock by calling iput() asynchronously with a workqueue for inodes
with i_nlink == 0.

705304a863 nilfs2: fix the nilfs_iget() vs. nilfs_new_inode() races
Same story as in commit 41080b5a24 ("nfsd race fixes: ext2") (similar
ext2 fix) except that nilfs2 needs to use insert_inode_locked4() instead
of insert_inode_locked() and a bug of a check for dead inodes needs to
be fixed.

If nilfs_iget() is called from nfsd after nilfs_new_inode() calls
insert_inode_locked4(), nilfs_iget() will wait for unlock_new_inode() at
the end of nilfs_mkdir()/nilfs_create()/etc to unlock the inode.

If nilfs_iget() is called before nilfs_new_inode() calls
insert_inode_locked4(), it will create an in-core inode and read its
data from the on-disk inode. But, nilfs_iget() will find i_nlink equals
zero and fail at nilfs_read_inode_common(), which will lead it to call
iget_failed() and cleanly fail.

However, this sanity check doesn't work as expected for reused on-disk
inodes because they leave a non-zero value in i_mode field and it
hinders the test of i_nlink. This patch also fixes the issue by
removing the test on i_mode that nilfs2 doesn't need.

75dc857c46 nilfs2: avoid duplicate segment construction for fsync()
This patch removes filemap_write_and_wait_range() from nilfs_sync_file(),
because it triggers a data segment construction by calling
nilfs_writepages() with WB_SYNC_ALL. A data segment construction does not
remove the inode from the i_dirty list and it does not clear the
NILFS_I_DIRTY flag. Therefore nilfs_inode_dirty() still returns true,
which leads to an unnecessary duplicate segment construction in
nilfs_sync_file().

A call to filemap_write_and_wait_range() is not needed, because NILFS2
does not rely on the generic writeback mechanisms. Instead it implements
its own mechanism to collect all dirty pages and write them into segments.
 It is more efficient to initiate the segment construction directly in
nilfs_sync_file() without the detour over filemap_write_and_wait_range().

Additionally the lock of i_mutex is not needed, because all code blocks
that are protected by i_mutex are also protected by a NILFS transaction:

  Function                i_mutex     nilfs_transaction
  ------------------------------------------------------
  nilfs_ioctl_setflags:   yes         yes
  nilfs_fiemap:           yes         no
  nilfs_write_begin:      yes         yes
  nilfs_write_end:        yes         yes
  nilfs_lookup:           yes         no
  nilfs_create:           yes         yes
  nilfs_link:             yes         yes
  nilfs_mknod:            yes         yes
  nilfs_symlink:          yes         yes
  nilfs_mkdir:            yes         yes
  nilfs_unlink:           yes         yes
  nilfs_rmdir:            yes         yes
  nilfs_rename:           yes         yes
  nilfs_setattr:          yes         yes

For nilfs_lookup() i_mutex is held for the parent directory, to protect it
from modification. The segment construction does not modify directory
inodes, so no lock is needed.

nilfs_fiemap() reads the block layout on the disk, by using
nilfs_bmap_lookup_contig(). This is already protected by bmap->b_sem.

b9f6614072 nilfs2: improve the performance of fdatasync()
Support for fdatasync() has been implemented in NILFS2 for a long time,
but whenever the corresponding inode is dirty the implementation falls
back to a full-flegded sync(). Since every write operation has to
update the modification time of the file, the inode will almost always
be dirty and fdatasync() will fall back to sync() most of the time. But
this fallback is only necessary for a change of the file size and not
for a change of the various timestamps.

This patch adds a new flag NILFS_I_INODE_SYNC to differentiate between
those two situations.

 * If it is set the file size was changed and a full sync is necessary.
 * If it is not set then only the timestamps were updated and
   fdatasync() can go ahead.

There is already a similar flag I_DIRTY_DATASYNC on the VFS layer with
the exact same semantics. Unfortunately it cannot be used directly,
because NILFS2 doesn't implement write_inode() and doesn't clear the VFS
flags when inodes are written out. So the VFS writeback thread can
clear I_DIRTY_DATASYNC at any time without notifying NILFS2. So
I_DIRTY_DATASYNC has to be mapped onto NILFS_I_INODE_SYNC in
nilfs_update_inode().

e2c7617ae3 nilfs2: add missing blkdev_issue_flush() to nilfs_sync_fs()
Under normal circumstances nilfs_sync_fs() writes out the super block,
which causes a flush of the underlying block device. But this depends
on the THE_NILFS_SB_DIRTY flag, which is only set if the pointer to the
last segment crosses a segment boundary. So if only a small amount of
data is written before the call to nilfs_sync_fs(), no flush of the
block device occurs.

In the above case an additional call to blkdev_issue_flush() is needed.
To prevent unnecessary overhead, the new flag nilfs->ns_flushed_device
is introduced, which is cleared whenever new logs are written and set
whenever the block device is flushed. For convenience the function
nilfs_flush_device() is added, which contains the above logic.

56d7acc792 nilfs2: fix data loss with mmap()
This bug leads to reproducible silent data loss, despite the use of
msync(), sync() and a clean unmount of the file system. It is easily
reproducible with the following script:

  ----------------[BEGIN SCRIPT]--------------------
  mkfs.nilfs2 -f /dev/sdb
  mount /dev/sdb /mnt

  dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=30 of=/mnt/testfile

  umount /mnt
  mount /dev/sdb /mnt
  CHECKSUM_BEFORE="$(md5sum /mnt/testfile)"

  /root/mmaptest/mmaptest /mnt/testfile 30 10 5

  sync
  CHECKSUM_AFTER="$(md5sum /mnt/testfile)"
  umount /mnt
  mount /dev/sdb /mnt
  CHECKSUM_AFTER_REMOUNT="$(md5sum /mnt/testfile)"
  umount /mnt

  echo "BEFORE MMAP:\t$CHECKSUM_BEFORE"
  echo "AFTER MMAP:\t$CHECKSUM_AFTER"
  echo "AFTER REMOUNT:\t$CHECKSUM_AFTER_REMOUNT"
  ----------------[END SCRIPT]--------------------

The mmaptest tool looks something like this (very simplified, with
error checking removed):

  ----------------[BEGIN mmaptest]--------------------
  data = mmap(NULL, file_size - file_offset, PROT_READ | PROT_WRITE,
              MAP_SHARED, fd, file_offset);

  for (i = 0; i < write_count; ++i) {
        memcpy(data + i * 4096, buf, sizeof(buf));
        msync(data, file_size - file_offset, MS_SYNC))
  }
  ----------------[END mmaptest]--------------------

The output of the script looks something like this:

  BEFORE MMAP:    281ed1d5ae50e8419f9b978aab16de83  /mnt/testfile
  AFTER MMAP:     6604a1c31f10780331a6850371b3a313  /mnt/testfile
  AFTER REMOUNT:  281ed1d5ae50e8419f9b978aab16de83  /mnt/testfile

So it is clear, that the changes done using mmap() do not survive a
remount. This can be reproduced a 100% of the time. The problem was
introduced in commit 136e8770cd ("nilfs2: fix issue of
nilfs_set_page_dirty() for page at EOF boundary").

If the page was read with mpage_readpage() or mpage_readpages() for
example, then it has no buffers attached to it. In that case
page_has_buffers(page) in nilfs_set_page_dirty() will be false.
Therefore nilfs_set_file_dirty() is never called and the pages are never
collected and never written to disk.

This patch fixes the problem by also calling nilfs_set_file_dirty() if the
page has no buffers attached to it.

aebe17f684 nilfs2: add /sys/fs/nilfs2/features group
This patchset implements creation of sysfs groups and attributes with
the purpose to show NILFS2 volume details, internal state of the driver
and to manage internal state of NILFS2 driver.

Sysfs is a virtual file system that exports information about devices
and drivers from the kernel device model to user space, and is also used
for configuration. NILFS2 is a complex file system that has segctor
thread, GC thread, checkpoint/snapshot model and so on. Sysfs namespace
provides native and easy way for: (1) getting info and statistics about
volume state; (2) getting info and configuration of internal subsystems
(segctor thread); (3) snapshots management.

Suggested patchset provides basis for managing segctor thread behaviour
and manipulation by snapshots. Currently, it informs only about segctor
thread's internal parameters and about mounted snapshots. But sysfs
interface can provide easy and simple way for deep management of segctor
thread and snapshots.

This patchset provides opportunity to manage interval of periodical
update of superblock (in seconds). Default value is 10 seconds. Now a
user can increase this value by means of
nilfs2/<device>/superblock/sb_update_frequency attribute in the case of
necessity.

Also the patchset provides opportunity to get information easily about
key volumes's parameters (free blocks, superblock write count,
superblock update frequency, latest segment info, dirty data blocks
count, count of clean segments, count of dirty segments and so on) in
real time manner. Such information can be used in scripts for subtle
management of filesystem.

Implemented functionality creates such groups:
(1) /sys/fs/nilfs2 - root group
(2) /sys/fs/nilfs2/features - group contains attributes that describe NILFS
file system driver features
(3) /sys/fs/nilfs2/<device> - group contains attributes that describe file
system partition's details
(4) /sys/fs/nilfs2/<device>/superblock - group contains attributes that describe
superblock's details
(5) /sys/fs/nilfs2/<device>/segctor - group contains attributes that describe
segctor thread activity details
(6) /sys/fs/nilfs2/<device>/segments - group contains attributes that describe
details about volume's segments
(7) /sys/fs/nilfs2/<device>/checkpoints - group contains attributes that describe
details about volume's checkpoints
(8) /sys/fs/nilfs2/<device>/mounted_snapshots - group contains group for every
mounted snapshot
(9) /sys/fs/nilfs2/<device>/mounted_snapshots/<snapshot> - group contains
details about mounted snapshot

This patch (of 9):

This patch adds code of creation /sys/fs/nilfs2 group and
/sys/fs/nilfs2/features group.

The features group contains attributes that describe NILFS
file system driver features:
(1) revision - show current revision of NILFS file system driver.

There are two formats of timestamp output - seconds and human-readable
format. Every showed timestamp has two sysfs files (time-<xxx> and
time-<xxx>-secs). One sysfs file (time-<xxx>) shows time in
human-readable format. Another sysfs file (time-<xxx>-secs) shows time in
seconds.

It was reported by Michael Semon that timestamp output in human-readable
format should be changed from "2014-4-12 14:5:38" to "2014-04-12
14:05:38". Second version of the patch fixes this issue.

1a0a397e41 dcache: d_obtain_alias callers don't all want DISCONNECTED
There are a few d_obtain_alias callers that are using it to get the
root of a filesystem which may already have an alias somewhere else.

This is not the same as the filehandle-lookup case, and none of them
actually need DCACHE_DISCONNECTED set.

It isn't really a serious problem, but it would really be clearer if we
reserved DCACHE_DISCONNECTED for those cases where it's actually needed.

In the btrfs case this was causing a spurious printk from
nfsd/nfsfh.c:fh_verify when it found an unexpected DCACHE_DISCONNECTED
dentry. Josef worked around this by unsetting DCACHE_DISCONNECTED
manually in 3a0dfa6a12 "Btrfs: unset DCACHE_DISCONNECTED when mounting
default subvol", and this replaces that workaround.

0ec060d188 nilfs2: verify metadata sizes read from disk
Add code to check sizes of on-disk data of metadata files such as inode
size, segment usage size, DAT entry size, and checkpoint size. Although
these sizes are read from disk, the current implementation doesn't check
them.

If these sizes are not sane on disk, it can cause out-of-range access to
metadata or memory access overrun on metadata block buffers due to
overflow in sundry calculations.

Both lower limit and upper limit of metadata sizes are verified to
prevent these issues.

2cc88f3a5f nilfs2: implementation of NILFS_IOCTL_SET_SUINFO ioctl
With this ioctl the segment usage entries in the SUFILE can be updated
from userspace.

This is useful, because it allows the userspace GC to modify and update
segment usage entries for specific segments, which enables it to avoid
unnecessary write operations.

If a segment needs to be cleaned, but there is no or very little
reclaimable space in it, the cleaning operation basically degrades to a
useless moving operation. In the end the only thing that changes is the
location of the data and a timestamp in the segment usage information.
With this ioctl the GC can skip the cleaning and update the segment
usage entries directly instead.

This is basically a shortcut to cleaning the segment. It is still
necessary to read the segment summary information, but the writing of
the live blocks can be skipped if it's not worth it.

code needs to ensure the page tree is really empty.

Add an address_space flag, AS_EXITING, that the inode freeing code sets
under the tree lock before doing the final truncate. Reclaim will check
for this flag before installing shadow pages.

02b9984d64 fs: push sync_filesystem() down to the file system's remount_fs()
Previously, the no-op "mount -o mount /dev/xxx" operation when the
file system is already mounted read-write causes an implied,
unconditional syncfs(). This seems pretty stupid, and it's certainly
documented or guaraunteed to do this, nor is it particularly useful,
except in the case where the file system was mounted rw and is getting
remounted read-only.

However, it's possible that there might be some file systems that are
actually depending on this behavior. In most file systems, it's
probably fine to only call sync_filesystem() when transitioning from
read-write to read-only, and there are some file systems where this is
not needed at all (for example, for a pseudo-filesystem or something
like romfs).

Pull core block IO changes from Jens Axboe:
 "The major piece in here is the immutable bio_ve series from Kent, the

4b15d61718 fs/nilfs2: fix integer overflow in nilfs_ioctl_wrap_copy()
The local variable 'pos' in nilfs_ioctl_wrap_copy function can overflow if
a large number was passed to argv->v_index from userspace and the sum of
argv->v_index and argv->v_nmembs exceeds the maximum value of __u64 type
integer (= ~(__u64)0 = 18446744073709551615).

Here, argv->v_index is a 64-bit width argument to specify the start
position of target data items (such as segment number, checkpoint number,
or virtual block address of nilfs), and argv->v_nmembs gives the total
number of the items that userland programs (such as lssu, lscp, or
cleanerd) want to get information about, which also gives the maximum
element count of argv->v_base[] array.

nilfs_ioctl_wrap_copy() calls dofunc() repeatedly and increments the
position variable 'pos' at the end of each iteration if dofunc() itself
didn't update 'pos':

      if (pos == ppos)
              pos += n;

This patch prevents the overflow here by rejecting pairs of a start
position (argv->v_index) and a total count (argv->v_nmembs) which leads to
the overflow.

70f2fe3a26 nilfs2: fix segctor bug that causes file system corruption
There is a bug in the function nilfs_segctor_collect, which results in
active data being written to a segment, that is marked as clean. It is
possible, that this segment is selected for a later segment
construction, whereby the old data is overwritten.

The problem shows itself with the following kernel log message:

  nilfs_sufile_do_cancel_free: segment 6533 must be clean

Usually a few hours later the file system gets corrupted:

  NILFS: bad btree node (blocknr=8748107): level = 0, flags = 0x0, nchildren = 0
  NILFS error (device sdc1): nilfs_bmap_last_key: broken bmap (inode number=114660)

The issue can be reproduced with a file system that is nearly full and
with the cleaner running, while some IO intensive task is running.
Although it is quite hard to reproduce.

This is what happens:

 1. The cleaner starts the segment construction
 2. nilfs_segctor_collect is called
 3. sc_stage is on NILFS_ST_SUFILE and segments are freed
 4. sc_stage is on NILFS_ST_DAT current segment is full
 5. nilfs_segctor_extend_segments is called, which
    allocates a new segment
 6. The new segment is one of the segments freed in step 3
 7. nilfs_sufile_cancel_freev is called and produces an error message
 8. Loop around and the collection starts again
 9. sc_stage is on NILFS_ST_SUFILE and segments are freed
    including the newly allocated segment, which will contain active
    data and can be allocated at a later time
10. A few hours later another segment construction allocates the
    segment and causes file system corruption

This can be prevented by simply reordering the statements. If
nilfs_sufile_cancel_freev is called before nilfs_segctor_extend_segments
the freed segments are marked as dirty and cannot be allocated any more.

7f42ec3941 nilfs2: fix issue with race condition of competition between segments for dirty blocks
Many NILFS2 users were reported about strange file system corruption
(for example):

   NILFS: bad btree node (blocknr=185027): level = 0, flags = 0x0, nchildren = 768
   NILFS error (device sda4): nilfs_bmap_last_key: broken bmap (inode number=11540)

But such error messages are consequence of file system's issue that takes
place more earlier. Fortunately, Jerome Poulin <jeromepoulin@gmail.com>
and Anton Eliasson <devel@antoneliasson.se> were reported about another
issue not so recently. These reports describe the issue with segctor
thread's crash:

  BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 0000000000004c83
  IP: nilfs_end_page_io+0x12/0xd0 [nilfs2]

  Call Trace:
   nilfs_segctor_do_construct+0xf25/0x1b20 [nilfs2]
   nilfs_segctor_construct+0x17b/0x290 [nilfs2]
   nilfs_segctor_thread+0x122/0x3b0 [nilfs2]
   kthread+0xc0/0xd0
   ret_from_fork+0x7c/0xb0

These two issues have one reason. This reason can raise third issue
too. Third issue results in hanging of segctor thread with eating of
100% CPU.

REPRODUCING PATH:

One of the possible way or the issue reproducing was described by
Jermoe me Poulin <jeromepoulin@gmail.com>:

1. init S to get to single user mode.
2. sysrq+E to make sure only my shell is running
3. start network-manager to get my wifi connection up
4. login as root and launch "screen"
5. cd /boot/log/nilfs which is a ext3 mount point and can log when NILFS dies.
6. lscp | xz -9e > lscp.txt.xz
7. mount my snapshot using mount -o cp=3360839,ro /dev/vgUbuntu/root /mnt/nilfs
8. start a screen to dump /proc/kmsg to text file since rsyslog is killed
9. start a screen and launch strace -f -o find-cat.log -t find
/mnt/nilfs -type f -exec cat {} > /dev/null \;
10. start a screen and launch strace -f -o apt-get.log -t apt-get update
11. launch the last command again as it did not crash the first time
12. apt-get crashes
13. ps aux > ps-aux-crashed.log
13. sysrq+W
14. sysrq+E wait for everything to terminate
15. sysrq+SUSB

Simplified way of the issue reproducing is starting kernel compilation
task and "apt-get update" in parallel.

REPRODUCIBILITY:

The issue is reproduced not stable [60% - 80%]. It is very important to
have proper environment for the issue reproducing. The critical
conditions for successful reproducing:

(1) It should have big modified file by mmap() way.

(2) This file should have the count of dirty blocks are greater that
    several segments in size (for example, two or three) from time to time
    during processing.

(3) It should be intensive background activity of files modification
    in another thread.

INVESTIGATION:

First of all, it is possible to see that the reason of crash is not valid
page address:

  NILFS [nilfs_segctor_complete_write]:2100 bh->b_count 0, bh->b_blocknr 13895680, bh->b_size 13897727, bh->b_page 0000000000001a82
  NILFS [nilfs_segctor_complete_write]:2101 segbuf->sb_segnum 6783

Moreover, value of b_page (0x1a82) is 6786. This value looks like segment
number. And b_blocknr with b_size values look like block numbers. So,
buffer_head's pointer points on not proper address value.

Detailed investigation of the issue is discovered such picture:

Usually, for every segment we collect dirty files in list. Then, dirty
blocks are gathered for every dirty file, prepared for write and
submitted by means of nilfs_segbuf_submit_bh() call. Finally, it takes
place complete write phase after calling nilfs_end_bio_write() on the
block layer. Buffers/pages are marked as not dirty on final phase and
processed files removed from the list of dirty files.

It is possible to see that we had three prepare_write and submit_bio
phases before segbuf_wait and complete_write phase. Moreover, segments
compete between each other for dirty blocks because on every iteration
of segments processing dirty buffer_heads are added in several lists of

  [SEGMENT 6785]: bh->b_assoc_buffers.next ffff880218a0d5f8, bh->b_assoc_buffers.prev ffff880222cc7ee8

The next pointer is the same but prev pointer has changed. It means
that buffer_head has next pointer from one list but prev pointer from
another. Such modification can be made several times. And, finally, it
can be resulted in various issues: (1) segctor hanging, (2) segctor
crashing, (3) file system metadata corruption.

FIX:
This patch adds:

(1) setting of BH_Async_Write flag in nilfs_segctor_prepare_write()
    for every proccessed dirty block;

(2) checking of BH_Async_Write flag in
    nilfs_lookup_dirty_data_buffers() and
    nilfs_lookup_dirty_node_buffers();

(3) clearing of BH_Async_Write flag in nilfs_segctor_complete_write(),
    nilfs_abort_logs(), nilfs_forget_buffer(), nilfs_clear_dirty_page().

4bf93b50fd nilfs2: fix issue with counting number of bio requests for BIO_EOPNOTSUPP error detection
Fix the issue with improper counting number of flying bio requests for
BIO_EOPNOTSUPP error detection case.

The sb_nbio must be incremented exactly the same number of times as
complete() function was called (or will be called) because
nilfs_segbuf_wait() will call wail_for_completion() for the number of
times set to sb_nbio:

  do {
      wait_for_completion(&segbuf->sb_bio_event);
  } while (--segbuf->sb_nbio > 0);

Two functions complete() and wait_for_completion() must be called the
same number of times for the same sb_bio_event. Otherwise,
wait_for_completion() will hang or leak.

e5f7f84843 ] nilfs2: use atomic64_t type for inodes_count and blocks_count fields in nilfs_root struct

c7ef972c44 nilfs2: implement calculation of free inodes count
Currently, NILFS2 returns 0 as free inodes count (f_ffree) and current
used inodes count as total file nodes in file system (f_files):

df -i
Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on
/dev/loop0           2      2       0  100% /mnt/nilfs2

This patch implements real calculation of free inodes count. First of
all, it is calculated total file nodes in file system as
(desc_blocks_count * groups_per_desc_block * entries_per_group).  Then, it
is calculated free inodes count as difference the total file nodes and
used inodes count. As a result, we have such output for NILFS2:

df -i
Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on
/dev/loop0      4194304 2114701  2079603   51% /mnt/nilfs2

136e8770cd nilfs2: fix issue of nilfs_set_page_dirty() for page at EOF boundary
nilfs2: fix issue of nilfs_set_page_dirty for page at EOF boundary

DESCRIPTION:
 There are use-cases when NILFS2 file system (formatted with block size
lesser than 4 KB) can be remounted in RO mode because of encountering of
"broken bmap" issue.

The issue was reported by Anthony Doggett <Anthony2486@interfaces.org.uk>:
 "The machine I've been trialling nilfs on is running Debian Testing,
  Linux version 3.2.0-4-686-pae (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc
  version 4.6.3 (Debian 4.6.3-14) ) #1 SMP Debian 3.2.35-2), but I've
  also reproduced it (identically) with Debian Unstable amd64 and Debian
  Experimental (using the 3.8-trunk kernel). The problematic partitions
  were formatted with "mkfs.nilfs2 -b 1024 -B 8192"."

SYMPTOMS:
(1) System log contains error messages likewise:

    [63102.496756] nilfs_direct_assign: invalid pointer: 0
    [63102.496786] NILFS error (device dm-17): nilfs_bmap_assign: broken bmap (inode number=28)
    [63102.496798]
    [63102.524403] Remounting filesystem read-only

(2) The NILFS2 file system is remounted in RO mode.

REPRODUSING PATH:
(1) Create volume group with name "unencrypted" by means of vgcreate utility.
(2) Run script (prepared by Anthony Doggett <Anthony2486@interfaces.org.uk>):

----------------[BEGIN SCRIPT]--------------------

VG=unencrypted
lvcreate --size 2G --name ntest $VG
mkfs.nilfs2 -b 1024 -B 8192 /dev/mapper/$VG-ntest
mkdir /var/tmp/n
mkdir /var/tmp/n/ntest
mount /dev/mapper/$VG-ntest /var/tmp/n/ntest
mkdir /var/tmp/n/ntest/thedir
cd /var/tmp/n/ntest/thedir
sleep 2
date
darcs init
sleep 2
dmesg|tail -n 5
date
darcs whatsnew || true
date
sleep 2
dmesg|tail -n 5
----------------[END SCRIPT]--------------------

REPRODUCIBILITY: 100%

INVESTIGATION:
As it was discovered, the issue takes place during segment
construction after executing such sequence of user-space operations:

  open("_darcs/index", O_RDWR|O_CREAT|O_NOCTTY, 0666) = 7
  fstat(7, {st_mode=S_IFREG|0644, st_size=0, ...}) = 0
  ftruncate(7, 60)

The error message "NILFS error (device dm-17): nilfs_bmap_assign: broken
bmap (inode number=28)" takes place because of trying to get block
number for third block of the file with logical offset #3072 bytes. As
it is possible to see from above output, the file has 60 bytes of the
whole size. So, it is enough one block (1 KB in size) allocation for
the whole file. Trying to operate with several blocks instead of one
takes place because of discovering several dirty buffers for this file
in nilfs_segctor_scan_file() method.

The root cause of this issue is in nilfs_set_page_dirty function which
is called just before writing to an mmapped page.

When nilfs_page_mkwrite function handles a page at EOF boundary, it
fills hole blocks only inside EOF through __block_page_mkwrite().

The __block_page_mkwrite() function calls set_page_dirty() after filling
hole blocks, thus nilfs_set_page_dirty function (=
a_ops->set_page_dirty) is called. However, the current implementation
of nilfs_set_page_dirty() wrongly marks all buffers dirty even for page
at EOF boundary.

As a result, buffers outside EOF are inconsistently marked dirty and
queued for write even though they are not mapped with nilfs_get_block
function.

FIX:
This modifies nilfs_set_page_dirty() not to mark hole blocks dirty.

Thanks to Vyacheslav Dubeyko for his effort on analysis and proposals
for this issue.

8c26c4e269 nilfs2: fix issue with flush kernel thread after remount in RO mode because of driver's internal error or metadata corruption
The NILFS2 driver remounts itself in RO mode in the case of discovering
metadata corruption (for example, discovering a broken bmap). But
usually, this takes place when there have been file system operations
before remounting in RO mode.

Thereby, NILFS2 driver can be in RO mode with presence of dirty pages in
modified inodes' address spaces. It results in flush kernel thread's
infinite trying to flush dirty pages in RO mode. As a result, it is
possible to see such side effects as: (1) flush kernel thread occupies
50% - 99% of CPU time; (2) system can't be shutdowned without manual
power switch off.

SYMPTOMS:
(1) System log contains error message: "Remounting filesystem read-only".
(2) The flush kernel thread occupies 50% - 99% of CPU time.
(3) The system can't be shutdowned without manual power switch off.

FIX:

This patch implements checking mount state of NILFS2 driver in
nilfs_writepage(), nilfs_writepages() and nilfs_mdt_write_page()
methods. If it is detected the RO mount state then all dirty pages are
simply discarded with warning messages is written in system log.

7f78e03513 fs: Limit sys_mount to only request filesystem modules.
Modify the request_module to prefix the file system type with "fs-"
and add aliases to all of the filesystems that can be built as modules
to match.

A common practice is to build all of the kernel code and leave code
that is not commonly needed as modules, with the result that many
users are exposed to any bug anywhere in the kernel.

Looking for filesystems with a fs- prefix limits the pool of possible
modules that can be loaded by mount to just filesystems trivially
making things safer with no real cost.

Using aliases means user space can control the policy of which
filesystem modules are auto-loaded by editing /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf
with blacklist and alias directives. Allowing simple, safe,
well understood work-arounds to known problematic software.

This also addresses a rare but unfortunate problem where the filesystem
name is not the same as it's module name and module auto-loading
would not work. While writing this patch I saw a handful of such
cases. The most significant being autofs that lives in the module
autofs4.

This is relevant to user namespaces because we can reach the request
module in get_fs_type() without having any special permissions, and
people get uncomfortable when a user specified string (in this case
the filesystem type) goes all of the way to request_module.

After having looked at this issue I don't think there is any
particular reason to perform any filtering or permission checks beyond
making it clear in the module request that we want a filesystem
module. The common pattern in the kernel is to call request_module()
without regards to the users permissions. In general all a filesystem
module does once loaded is call register_filesystem() and go to sleep.
Which means there is not much attack surface exposed by loading a
filesytem module unless the filesystem is mounted. In a user
namespace filesystems are not mounted unless .fs_flags = FS_USERNS_MOUNT,
which most filesystems do not set today.

1d1d1a7672 mm: only enforce stable page writes if the backing device requires it
Create a helper function to check if a backing device requires stable
page writes and, if so, performs the necessary wait. Then, make it so
that all points in the memory manager that handle making pages writable
use the helper function. This should provide stable page write support
to most filesystems, while eliminating unnecessary waiting for devices
that don't require the feature.

Before this patchset, all filesystems would block, regardless of whether
or not it was necessary. ext3 would wait, but still generate occasional
checksum errors. The network filesystems were left to do their own
thing, so they'd wait too.

After this patchset, all the disk filesystems except ext3 and btrfs will
wait only if the hardware requires it. ext3 (if necessary) snapshots
pages instead of blocking, and btrfs provides its own bdi so the mm will
never wait. Network filesystems haven't been touched, so either they
provide their own stable page guarantees or they don't block at all.
The blocking behavior is back to what it was before 3.0 if you don't
have a disk requiring stable page writes.

Here's the result of using dbench to test latency on ext2:

3.8.0-rc3:
 Operation      Count    AvgLat    MaxLat
 ----------------------------------------
 WriteX        109347     0.028    59.817
 ReadX         347180     0.004     3.391
 Flush          15514    29.828   287.283

Throughput 57.429 MB/sec  4 clients  4 procs  max_latency=287.290 ms

3.8.0-rc3 + patches:
 WriteX        105556     0.029     4.273
 ReadX         335004     0.005     4.112
 Flush          14982    30.540   298.634

Throughput 55.4496 MB/sec  4 clients  4 procs  max_latency=298.650 ms

As you can see, the maximum write latency drops considerably with this
patch enabled. The other filesystems (ext3/ext4/xfs/btrfs) behave
similarly, but see the cover letter for those results.

06991c28f3 Driver core patches for 3.9-rc1
Here is the big driver core merge for 3.9-rc1

 There are two major series here, both of which touch lots of drivers all
 over the kernel, and will cause you some merge conflicts:
   - add a new function called devm_ioremap_resource() to properly be
     able to check return values.
   - remove CONFIG_EXPERIMENTAL

 If you need me to provide a merged tree to handle these resolutions,
 please let me know.

 Other than those patches, there's not much here, some minor fixes and
 updates.

a9bae18954 nilfs2: fix fix very long mount time issue
There exists a situation when GC can work in background alone without
any other filesystem activity during significant time.

The nilfs_clean_segments() method calls nilfs_segctor_construct() that
updates superblocks in the case of NILFS_SC_SUPER_ROOT and
THE_NILFS_DISCONTINUED flags are set. But when GC is working alone the
nilfs_clean_segments() is called with unset THE_NILFS_DISCONTINUED flag.
As a result, the update of superblocks doesn't occurred all this time
and in the case of SPOR superblocks keep very old values of last super
root placement.

SYMPTOMS:

Trying to mount a NILFS2 volume after SPOR in such environment ends with
very long mounting time (it can achieve about several hours in some
cases).

REPRODUCING PATH:

1. It needs to use external USB HDD, disable automount and doesn't
   make any additional filesystem activity on the NILFS2 volume.

2. Generate temporary file with size about 100 - 500 GB (for example,
   dd if=/dev/zero of=<file_name> bs=1073741824 count=200).  The size of
   file defines duration of GC working.

3. Then it needs to delete file.

4. Start GC manually by means of command "nilfs-clean -p 0". When you
   start GC by means of such way then, at the end, superblocks is updated
   by once. So, for simulation of SPOR, it needs to wait sometime (15 -
   40 minutes) and simply switch off USB HDD manually.

5. Switch on USB HDD again and try to mount NILFS2 volume. As a
   result, NILFS2 volume will mount during very long time.

REPRODUCIBILITY: 100%

FIX:

This patch adds checking that superblocks need to update and set
THE_NILFS_DISCONTINUED flag before nilfs_clean_segments() call.

Move actual pte filling for non-linear file mappings into the new special

Filesystems must implement this method to get non-linear mapping support,

Now device drivers can implement this method and obtain nonlinear vma support.

aab174f0df Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/viro/vfs
Pull vfs update from Al Viro:

 - big one - consolidation of descriptor-related logics; almost all of
   that is moved to fs/file.c

   (BTW, I'm seriously tempted to rename the result to fd.c. As it is,
   we have a situation when file_table.c is about handling of struct
   file and file.c is about handling of descriptor tables; the reasons
   are historical - file_table.c used to be about a static array of
   struct file we used to have way back).

   A lot of stray ends got cleaned up and converted to saner primitives,
   disgusting mess in android/binder.c is still disgusting, but at least
   doesn't poke so much in descriptor table guts anymore. A bunch of
   relatively minor races got fixed in process, plus an ext4 struct file
   leak.

 - related thing - fget_light() partially unuglified; see fdget() in
   there (and yes, it generates the code as good as we used to have).

 - also related - bits of Cyrill's procfs stuff that got entangled into
   that work; _not_ all of it, just the initial move to fs/proc/fd.c and
   switch of fdinfo to seq_file.

 - Alex's fs/coredump.c spiltoff - the same story, had been easier to
   take that commit than mess with conflicts. The rest is a separate
   pile, this was just a mechanical code movement.

 - a few misc patches all over the place. Not all for this cycle,
   there'll be more (and quite a few currently sit in akpm's tree)."

Fix up trivial conflicts in the android binder driver, and some fairly
simple conflicts due to two different changes to the sock_alloc_file()

There's no reason to call rcu_barrier() on every

437589a74b Merge branch 'for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace
Pull user namespace changes from Eric Biederman:
 "This is a mostly modest set of changes to enable basic user namespace
  support. This allows the code to code to compile with user namespaces
  enabled and removes the assumption there is only the initial user
  namespace. Everything is converted except for the most complex of the
  filesystems: autofs4, 9p, afs, ceph, cifs, coda, fuse, gfs2, ncpfs,
  nfs, ocfs2 and xfs as those patches need a bit more review.

  The strategy is to push kuid_t and kgid_t values are far down into
  subsystems and filesystems as reasonable. Leaving the make_kuid and
  from_kuid operations to happen at the edge of userspace, as the values
  come off the disk, and as the values come in from the network.
  Letting compile type incompatible compile errors (present when user
  namespaces are enabled) guide me to find the issues.

  The most tricky areas have been the places where we had an implicit
  union of uid and gid values and were storing them in an unsigned int.
  Those places were converted into explicit unions. I made certain to
  handle those places with simple trivial patches.

  Out of that work I discovered we have generic interfaces for storing
  quota by projid. I had never heard of the project identifiers before.
  Adding full user namespace support for project identifiers accounts
  for most of the code size growth in my git tree.

  Ultimately there will be work to relax privlige checks from
  "capable(FOO)" to "ns_capable(user_ns, FOO)" where it is safe allowing
  root in a user names to do those things that today we only forbid to
  non-root users because it will confuse suid root applications.

  While I was pushing kuid_t and kgid_t changes deep into the audit code
  I made a few other cleanups. I capitalized on the fact we process
  netlink messages in the context of the message sender. I removed
  usage of NETLINK_CRED, and started directly using current->tty.

  Some of these patches have also made it into maintainer trees, with no
  problems from identical code from different trees showing up in
  linux-next.

  After reading through all of this code I feel like I might be able to
  win a game of kernel trivial pursuit."

Fix up some fairly trivial conflicts in netfilter uid/git logging code.

041bbb6d36 ext4: fix mtime update in nodelalloc mode
Commits 5e8830dc85 and 41c4d25f78 introduced a regression into
v3.6-rc1 for ext4 in nodealloc mode, such that mtime updates would not
take place for files modified via mmap if the page was already in the
page cache. This would also affect ext3 file systems mounted using
the ext4 file system driver.

The problem was that ext4_page_mkwrite() had a shortcut which would
avoid calling __block_page_mkwrite() under some circumstances, and the
above two commit transferred the responsibility of calling
file_update_time() to __block_page_mkwrite --- which woudln't get
called in some circumstances.

Since __block_page_mkwrite() only has three callers,
block_page_mkwrite(), ext4_page_mkwrite, and nilfs_page_mkwrite(), the
best way to solve this is to move the responsibility for calling
file_update_time() to its caller.

This problem was found via xfstests #215 with a file system mounted
with -o nodelalloc.

where the thaw ioctl deadlocked at thaw_super() when called while chcp was
waiting at nilfs_transaction_begin() called from
nilfs_ioctl_change_cpmode(). This deadlock is 100% reproducible.

This is because nilfs_ioctl_change_cpmode() first locks sb->s_umount in
read mode and then waits for unfreezing in nilfs_transaction_begin(),
whereas thaw_super() locks sb->s_umount in write mode. The locking of
sb->s_umount here was intended to make snapshot mounts and the downgrade
of snapshots to checkpoints exclusive.

This fixes the deadlock issue by replacing the sb->s_umount usage in
nilfs_ioctl_change_cpmode() with a dedicated mutex which protects snapshot
mounts.

fe0627e7b3 nilfs2: fix timing issue between rmcp and chcp ioctls
The checkpoint deletion ioctl (rmcp ioctl) has potential for breaking
snapshot because it is not fully exclusive with checkpoint mode change
ioctl (chcp ioctl).

The rmcp ioctl first tests if the specified checkpoint is a snapshot or
not within nilfs_cpfile_delete_checkpoint function, and then calls
nilfs_cpfile_delete_checkpoints function to actually invalidate the
checkpoint only if it's not a snapshot. However, the checkpoint can be
changed into a snapshot by the chcp ioctl between these two operations.
In that case, calling nilfs_cpfile_delete_checkpoints() wrongly
invalidates the snapshot, which leads to snapshot list corruption and
snapshot count mismatch.

This fixes the issue by changing nilfs_cpfile_delete_checkpoints() so
that it reconfirms the target checkpoints are snapshot or not.

This second check is exclusive with the chcp operation since it is
protected by an existing semaphore.

fbb24a3a91 nilfs2: ensure proper cache clearing for gc-inodes
A gc-inode is a pseudo inode used to buffer the blocks to be moved by
garbage collection.

Block caches of gc-inodes must be cleared every time a garbage collection
function (nilfs_clean_segments) completes. Otherwise, stale blocks
buffered in the caches may be wrongly reused in successive calls of the GC
function.

For user files, this is not a problem because their gc-inodes are
distinguished by a checkpoint number as well as an inode number. They
never buffer different blocks if either an inode number, a checkpoint
number, or a block offset differs.

However, gc-inodes of sufile, cpfile and DAT file can store different data
for the same block offset. Thus, the nilfs_clean_segments function can
move incorrect block for these meta-data files if an old block is cached.
I found this is really causing meta-data corruption in nilfs.

This fixes the issue by ensuring cache clear of gc-inodes and resolves
reported GC problems including checkpoint file corruption, b-tree
corruption, and the following warning during GC.

  nilfs_palloc_freev: entry number 307234 already freed.

26fe575028 vfs: make it possible to access the dentry hash/len as one 64-bit entry
This allows comparing hash and len in one operation on 64-bit
architectures. Right now only __d_lookup_rcu() takes advantage of this,
since that is the case we care most about.

The use of anonymous struct/unions hides the alternate 64-bit approach
from most users, the exception being a few cases where we initialize a
'struct qstr' with a static initializer. This makes the problematic
cases use a new QSTR_INIT() helper function for that (but initializing
just the name pointer with a "{ .name = xyzzy }" initializer remains
valid, as does just copying another qstr structure).

disk usage calculation. This patch reports error when mounting such
bogus volumes.

6b520e0565 vfs: fix the stupidity with i_dentry in inode destructors
Seeing that just about every destructor got that INIT_LIST_HEAD() copied into

481fe17e97 nilfs2: potential integer overflow in nilfs_ioctl_clean_segments()
There is a potential integer overflow in nilfs_ioctl_clean_segments().
When a large argv[n].v_nmembs is passed from the userspace, the subsequent
call to vmalloc() will allocate a buffer smaller than expected, which
leads to out-of-bound access in nilfs_ioctl_move_blocks() and
lfs_clean_segments().

The following check does not prevent the overflow because nsegs is also
controlled by the userspace and could be very large.

		if (argv[n].v_nmembs > nsegs * nilfs->ns_blocks_per_segment)
			goto out_free;

This patch clamps argv[n].v_nmembs to UINT_MAX / argv[n].v_size, and
returns -EINVAL when overflow.

a0acae0e88 freezer: unexport refrigerator() and update try_to_freeze() slightly
There is no reason to export two functions for entering the
refrigerator. Calling refrigerator() instead of try_to_freeze()
doesn't save anything noticeable or removes any race condition.

* Rename refrigerator() to __refrigerator() and make it return bool
  indicating whether it scheduled out for freezing.

* Update try_to_freeze() to return bool and relay the return value of
  __refrigerator() if freezing().

* Convert all refrigerator() users to try_to_freeze().

* Update documentation accordingly.

* While at it, add might_sleep() to try_to_freeze().

02c24a8218 fs: push i_mutex and filemap_write_and_wait down into ->fsync() handlers
Btrfs needs to be able to control how filemap_write_and_wait_range() is called
in fsync to make it less of a painful operation, so push down taking i_mutex and
the calling of filemap_write_and_wait() down into the ->fsync() handlers. Some
file systems can drop taking the i_mutex altogether it seems, like ext3 and
ocfs2. For correctness sake I just pushed everything down in all cases to make
sure that we keep the current behavior the same for everybody, and then each
individual fs maintainer can make up their mind about what to do from there.
Thanks,

aacfc19c62 fs: simplify the blockdev_direct_IO prototype
Simple filesystems always pass inode->i_sb_bdev as the block device
argument, and never need a end_io handler. Let's simply things for
them and for my grepping activity by dropping these arguments. The
only thing not falling into that scheme is ext4, which passes and
end_io handler without needing special flags (yet), but given how
messy the direct I/O code there is use of __blockdev_direct_IO
in one instead of two out of three cases isn't going to make a large
difference anyway.
