mm: avoid unnecessary page fault retires on shared memory types
I observed that for each of the shared file-backed page faults, we're very likely to retry one more time for the 1st write fault upon no page. It's because we'll need to release the mmap lock for dirty rate limit purpose with balance_dirty_pages_ratelimited() (in fault_dirty_shared_page()). Then after that throttling we return VM_FAULT_RETRY. We did that probably because VM_FAULT_RETRY is the only way we can return to the fault handler at that time telling it we've released the mmap lock. However that's not ideal because it's very likely the fault does not need to be retried at all since the pgtable was well installed before the throttling, so the next continuous fault (including taking mmap read lock, walk the pgtable, etc.) could be in most cases unnecessary. It's not only slowing down page faults for shared file-backed, but also add more mmap lock contention which is in most cases not needed at all. To observe this, one could try to write to some shmem page and look at "pgfault" value in /proc/vmstat, then we should expect 2 counts for each shmem write simply because we retried, and vm event "pgfault" will capture that. To make it more efficient, add a new VM_FAULT_COMPLETED return code just to show that we've completed the whole fault and released the lock. It's also a hint that we should very possibly not need another fault immediately on this page because we've just completed it. This patch provides a ~12% perf boost on my aarch64 test VM with a simple program sequentially dirtying 400MB shmem file being mmap()ed and these are the time it needs: Before: 650.980 ms (+-1.94%) After: 569.396 ms (+-1.38%) I believe it could help more than that. We need some special care on GUP and the s390 pgfault handler (for gmap code before returning from pgfault), the rest changes in the page fault handlers should be relatively straightforward. Another thing to mention is that mm_account_fault() does take this new fault as a generic fault to be accounted, unlike VM_FAULT_RETRY. I explicitly didn't touch hmm_vma_fault() and break_ksm() because they do not handle VM_FAULT_RETRY even with existing code, so I'm literally keeping them as-is. New for 5.19, the updates aim to improve entropy collection methods and make some initial decisions regarding the "premature next" problem and our threat model. The cloc utility now reports that random.c is 931 lines of code and 466 lines of comments, not that basic metrics like that mean all that much, but at the very least it tells you that this is very much a manageable driver now. Here's a summary of the various updates: - The random_get_entropy() function now always returns something at least minimally useful. This is the primary entropy source in most collectors, which in the best case expands to something like RDTSC, but prior to this change, in the worst case it would just return 0, contributing nothing. For 5.19, additional architectures are wired up, and architectures that are entirely missing a cycle counter now have a generic fallback path, which uses the highest resolution clock available from the timekeeping subsystem. Some of those clocks can actually be quite good, despite the CPU not having a cycle counter of its own, and going off-core for a stamp is generally thought to increase jitter, something positive from the perspective of entropy gathering. Done very early on in the development cycle, this has been sitting in next getting some testing for a while now and has relevant acks from the archs, so it should be pretty well tested and fine, but is nonetheless the thing I'll be keeping my eye on most closely. - Of particular note with the random_get_entropy() improvements is MIPS, which, on CPUs that lack the c0 count register, will now combine the high-speed but short-cycle c0 random register with the lower-speed but long-cycle generic fallback path. - With random_get_entropy() now always returning something useful, the interrupt handler now collects entropy in a consistent construction. - Rather than comparing two samples of random_get_entropy() for the jitter dance, the algorithm now tests many samples, and uses the amount of differing ones to determine whether or not jitter entropy is usable and how laborious it must be. The problem with comparing only two samples was that if the cycle counter was extremely slow, but just so happened to be on the cusp of a change, the slowness wouldn't be detected. Taking many samples fixes that to some degree. This, combined with the other improvements to random_get_entropy(), should make future unification of /dev/random and /dev/urandom maybe more possible. At the very least, were we to attempt it again today (we're not), it wouldn't break any of Guenter's test rigs that broke when we tried it with 5.18. So, not today, but perhaps down the road, that's something we can revisit. - We attempt to reseed the RNG immediately upon waking up from system suspend or hibernation, making use of the various timestamps about suspend time and such available, as well as the usual inputs such as RDRAND when available. - Batched randomness now falls back to ordinary randomness before the RNG is initialized. This provides more consistent guarantees to the types of random numbers being returned by the various accessors. - The "pre-init injection" code is now gone for good. I suspect you in particular will be happy to read that, as I recall you expressing your distaste for it a few months ago. Instead, to avoid a "premature first" issue, while still allowing for maximal amount of entropy availability during system boot, the first 128 bits of estimated entropy are used immediately as it arrives, with the next 128 bits being buffered. And, as before, after the RNG has been fully initialized, it winds up reseeding anyway a few seconds later in most cases. This resulted in a pretty big simplification of the initialization code and let us remove various ad-hoc mechanisms like the ugly crng_pre_init_inject(). - The RNG no longer pretends to handle the "premature next" security model, something that various academics and other RNG designs have tried to care about in the past. After an interesting mailing list thread, these issues are thought to be a) mainly academic and not practical at all, and b) actively harming the real security of the RNG by delaying new entropy additions after a potential compromise, making a potentially bad situation even worse. As well, in the first place, our RNG never even properly handled the premature next issue, so removing an incomplete solution to a fake problem was particularly nice. This allowed for numerous other simplifications in the code, which is a lot cleaner as a consequence. If you didn't see it before, https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/YmlMGx6+uigkGiZ0@zx2c4.com/ may be a thread worth skimming through. - While the interrupt handler received a separate code path years ago that avoids locks by using per-cpu data structures and a faster mixing algorithm, in order to reduce interrupt latency, input and disk events that are triggered in hardirq handlers were still hitting locks and more expensive algorithms. Those are now redirected to use the faster per-cpu data structures. - Rather than having the fake-crypto almost-siphash-based random32 implementation be used right and left, and in many places where cryptographically secure randomness is desirable, the batched entropy code is now fast enough to replace that. - As usual, numerous code quality and documentation cleanups. For example, the initialization state machine now uses enum symbolic constants instead of just hard coding numbers everywhere. - Since the RNG initializes once, and then is always initialized thereafter, a pretty heavy amount of code used during that initialization is never used again. It is now completely cordoned off using static branches and it winds up in the .text.unlikely section so that it doesn't reduce cache compactness after the RNG is ready. - A variety of functions meant for waiting on the RNG to be initialized were only used by vsprintf, and in not a particularly optimal way. Replacing that usage with a more ordinary setup made it possible to remove those functions. - A cleanup of how we warn userspace about the use of uninitialized /dev/urandom and uninitialized get_random_bytes() usage. Interestingly, with the change you merged for 5.18 that attempts to use jitter (but does not block if it can't), the majority of users should never see those warnings for /dev/urandom at all now, and the one for in-kernel usage is mainly a debug thing. - The file_operations struct for /dev/[u]random now implements .read_iter and .write_iter instead of .read and .write, allowing it to also implement .splice_read and .splice_write, which makes splice(2) work again after it was broken here (and in many other places in the tree) during the set_fs() removal. This was a bit of a last minute arrival from Jens that hasn't had as much time to bake, so I'll be keeping my eye on this as well, but it seems fairly ordinary. Unfortunately, read_iter() is around 3% slower than read() in my tests, which I'm not thrilled about. But Jens and Al, spurred by this observation, seem to be making progress in removing the bottlenecks on the iter paths in the VFS layer in general, which should remove the performance gap for all drivers. - Assorted other bug fixes, cleanups, and optimizations. - A small SipHash cleanup" * tag 'random-5.19-rc1-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/crng/random: (49 commits) random: check for signals after page of pool writes random: wire up fops->splice_{read,write}_iter() random: convert to using fops->write_iter() random: convert to using fops->read_iter() random: unify batched entropy implementations random: move randomize_page() into mm where it belongs random: remove mostly unused async readiness notifier random: remove get_random_bytes_arch() and add rng_has_arch_random() random: move initialization functions out of hot pages random: make consistent use of buf and len random: use proper return types on get_random_{int,long}_wait() random: remove extern from functions in header random: use static branch for crng_ready() random: credit architectural init the exact amount random: handle latent entropy and command line from random_init() random: use proper jiffies comparison macro random: remove ratelimiting for in-kernel unseeded randomness random: move initialization out of reseeding hot path random: avoid initializing twice in credit race random: use symbolic constants for crng_init states ... |

kbuild: link symbol CRCs at final link, removing CONFIG_MODULE_REL_CRCS
include/{linux,asm-generic}/export.h defines a weak symbol, __crc_* as a placeholder. Genksyms writes the version CRCs into the linker script, which will be used for filling the __crc_* symbols. The linker script format depends on CONFIG_MODULE_REL_CRCS. If it is enabled, __crc_* holds the offset to the reference of CRC. It is time to get rid of this complexity. Now that modpost parses text files (.*.cmd) to collect all the CRCs, it can generate C code that will be linked to the vmlinux or modules. Generate a new C file, .vmlinux.export.c, which contains the CRCs of symbols exported by vmlinux. It is compiled and linked to vmlinux in scripts/link-vmlinux.sh. Put the CRCs of symbols exported by modules into the existing *.mod.c files. No additional build step is needed for modules. As before, *.mod.c are compiled and linked to *.ko in scripts/Makefile.modfinal. No linker magic is used here. The new C implementation works in the same way, whether CONFIG_RELOCATABLE is enabled or not. CONFIG_MODULE_REL_CRCS is no longer needed. Previously, Kbuild invoked additional $(LD) to update the CRCs in objects, but this step is unneeded too. m68k: Switch to new sys-off handler API
Kernel now supports chained power-off handlers. Use register_power_off_handler() that registers power-off handlers and do_kernel_power_off() that invokes chained power-off handlers. Legacy pm_power_off() will be removed once all drivers will be converted to the new sys-off API. Normally arch code should adopt only the do_kernel_power_off() at first, but m68k is a special case because it uses pm_power_off() "inside out", i.e. pm_power_off() invokes machine_power_off() [in fact it does nothing], while it's machine_power_off() that should invoke the pm_power_off(), and thus, we can't convert platforms to the new API separately. After a build regression report, I took a look at possible users of CONFIG_ISA_DMA_API on m68k and found none, which Greg confirmed. The CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA option in turn is only needed to implement ISA_DMA_API, and is clearly not used on the platforms with ISA support. The CONFIG_ISA support for AMIGA_PCMCIA is probably also unneeded, but this is less clear. Unlike other PCMCIA implementations, this one does not use the drivers/pcmcia subsystem at all and just supports the "apne" network driver. When it was first added, one could use ISA drivers on it as well, but this probably broke at some point. With no reason to keep this, let's just drop the corresponding files and prevent the remaining ISA drivers that use this from getting built. signal: Deliver SIGTRAP on perf event asynchronously if blocked
With SIGTRAP on perf events, we have encountered termination of
processes due to user space attempting to block delivery of SIGTRAP.
Consider this case:
<set up SIGTRAP on a perf event>
...
sigset_t s;
sigemptyset(&s);
sigaddset(&s, SIGTRAP | <and others>);
sigprocmask(SIG_BLOCK, &s, ...);
...
<perf event triggers>
When the perf event triggers, while SIGTRAP is blocked, force_sig_perf()
will force the signal, but revert back to the default handler, thus
terminating the task.
This makes sense for error conditions, but not so much for explicitly
requested monitoring. However, the expectation is still that signals
generated by perf events are synchronous, which will no longer be the
case if the signal is blocked and delivered later.
To give user space the ability to clearly distinguish synchronous from
asynchronous signals, introduce siginfo_t::si_perf_flags and
TRAP_PERF_FLAG_ASYNC (opted for flags in case more binary information is
required in future).
The resolution to the problem is then to (a) no longer force the signal
(avoiding the terminations), but (b) tell user space via si_perf_flags
if the signal was synchronous or not, so that such signals can be
handled differently (e.g. let user space decide to ignore or consider
the data imprecise).
The alternative of making the kernel ignore SIGTRAP on perf events if
the signal is blocked may work for some usecases, but likely causes
issues in others that then have to revert back to interception of
sigprocmask() (which we want to avoid). [ A concrete example: when using
breakpoint perf events to track data-flow, in a region of code where
signals are blocked, data-flow can no longer be tracked accurately.
When a relevant asynchronous signal is received after unblocking the
signal, the data-flow tracking logic needs to know its state is
imprecise. ]

ptrace: Cleanups for v5.18
This set of changes removes tracehook.h, moves modification of all of the ptrace fields inside of siglock to remove races, adds a missing permission check to ptrace.c The removal of tracehook.h is quite significant as it has been a major source of confusion in recent years. Much of that confusion was around task_work and TIF_NOTIFY_SIGNAL (which I have now decoupled making the semantics clearer). For people who don't know tracehook.h is a vestiage of an attempt to implement uprobes like functionality that was never fully merged, and was later superseeded by uprobes when uprobes was merged. For many years now we have been removing what tracehook functionaly a little bit at a time. To the point where now anything left in tracehook.h is some weird strange thing that is difficult to understand. Eric W. asm-generic updates for 5.18
There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. This was already gone from all major architectures, but now we can finally remove it everywhere, which loses some particularly tricky and error-prone code. There is a small merge conflict against a parisc cleanup, the solution is to use their new version. - The nds32 architecture ends its tenure in the Linux kernel. The hardware is still used and the code is in reasonable shape, but the mainline port is not actively maintained any more, as all remaining users are thought to run vendor kernels that would never be updated to a future release. There are some obvious conflicts against changes to the removed files. - A series from Masahiro Yamada cleans up some of the uapi header files to pass the compile-time checks. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmI69BsACgkQmmx57+YA GNn/zA//f4d5VTT0ThhRxRWTu9BdThGHoB8TUcY7iOhbsWu0X/913NItRC3UeWNl IdmisaXgVtirg1dcC2pWUmrcHdoWOCEGfK4+Zr2NhSWfuZDWvODHK9pGWk4WLnhe cQgUNBvIuuAMryGtrOBwHPO4TpfCyy2ioeVP36ZfcsWXdDxTrqfaq/56mk3sxIP6 sUTk1UEjut9NG4C9xIIvcSU50R3l6LryQE/H9kyTLtaSvfvTOvprcVYCq0GPmSzo DtQ1Wwa9zbJ+4EqoMiP5RrgQwWvOTg2iRByLU8ytwlX3e/SEF0uihvMv1FQbL8zG G8RhGUOKQSEhaBfc3lIkm8GpOVPh0uHzB6zhn7daVmAWtazRD2Nu59BMjipa+ims a8Z58iHH7jRAnKeEkVZqXKb1CEiUxaQx/IeVPzN4QlwMhDtwrI76LY7ZJ1zCqTGY ENG0yRLav1XselYBslOYXGtOEWcY5EZPWqLyWbp4P9vz2g0Fe0gZxoIOvPmNQc89 QnfXpCt7vm/DGkyO255myu08GOLeMkisVqUIzLDB9avlym5mri7T7vk9abBa2YyO CRpTL5gl1/qKPWuH1UI5mvhT+sbbBE2SUHSuy84btns39ZKKKynwCtdu+hSQkKLE h9pV30Gf1cLTD4JAE0RWlUgOmbBLVp34loTOexQj4MrLM1noOnw= =vtCN -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-5.18' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three sets of updates for 5.18 in the asm-generic tree: - The set_fs()/get_fs() infrastructure gets removed for good. a.out: Stop building a.out/osf1 support on alpha and m68k
There has been repeated discussion on removing a.out support, the most recent was[1]. Having read through a bunch of the discussion it looks like no one has see any reason why we need to keep a.out support. The m68k maintainer has even come out in favor of removing a.out support[2]. At a practical level with only two rarely used architectures building a.out support, it gets increasingly hard to test and to care about. Which means the code will almost certainly bit-rot. Let's see if anyone cares about a.out support on the last two architectures that build it, by disabling the build of the support in Kconfig. If anyone cares, this can be easily reverted, and we can then have a discussion about what it is going to take to support a.out binaries in the long term. m68k: Implement "current_stack_pointer"
To follow the existing per-arch conventions, add asm "sp" as "current_stack_pointer". This will let it be used in non-arch places (like HARDENED_USERCOPY). Merge branch 'set_fs-4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic into asm-generic
Christoph Hellwig and a few others spent a huge effort on removing set_fs() from most of the important architectures, but about half the other architectures were never completed even though most of them don't actually use set_fs() at all. I did a patch for microblaze at some point, which turned out to be fairly generic, and now ported it to most other architectures, using new generic implementations of access_ok() and __{get,put}_kernel_nocheck(). Three architectures (sparc64, ia64, and sh) needed some extra work, which I also completed. * 'set_fs-4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: uaccess: remove CONFIG_SET_FS ia64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support sh: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support sparc64: remove CONFIG_SET_FS support lib/test_lockup: fix kernel pointer check for separate address spaces uaccess: generalize access_ok() uaccess: fix type mismatch warnings from access_ok() arm64: simplify access_ok() m68k: fix access_ok for coldfire MIPS: use simpler access_ok() MIPS: Handle address errors for accesses above CPU max virtual user address uaccess: add generic __{get,put}_kernel_nofault nios2: drop access_ok() check from __put_user() x86: use more conventional access_ok() definition x86: remove __range_not_ok() sparc64: add __{get,put}_kernel_nofault() nds32: fix access_ok() checks in get/put_user uaccess: fix nios2 and microblaze get_user_8() uaccess: fix integer overflow on access_ok() |

uaccess: generalize access_ok()
There are many different ways that access_ok() is defined across architectures, but in the end, they all just compare against the user_addr_max() value or they accept anything. Provide one definition that works for most architectures, checking against TASK_SIZE_MAX for user processes or skipping the check inside of uaccess_kernel() sections. For architectures without CONFIG_SET_FS(), this should be the fastest check, as it comes down to a single comparison of a pointer against a compile-time constant, while the architecture specific versions tend to do something more complex for historic reasons or get something wrong. Type checking for __user annotations is handled inconsistently across architectures, but this is easily simplified as well by using an inline function that takes a 'const void __user *' argument. A handful of callers need an extra __user annotation for this. Some architectures had trick to use 33-bit or 65-bit arithmetic on the addresses to calculate the overflow, however this simpler version uses fewer registers, which means it can produce better object code in the end despite needing a second (statically predicted) branch. While most m68k platforms use separate address spaces for user and kernel space, at least coldfire does not, and the other ones have a TASK_SIZE that is less than the entire 4GB address range. Pull signal/exit/ptrace updates from Eric Biederman: "This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found along the way. The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on the stack. Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task are the big successes for dead code removal this round. A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes they were fixing. There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some rebasing. Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed. There are several loosely related changes included because I am cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost. ptrace/m68k: Stop open coding ptrace_report_syscall
The generic function ptrace_report_syscall does a little more than syscall_trace on m68k. The function ptrace_report_syscall stops early if PT_TRACED is not set, it sets ptrace_message, and returns the result of fatal_signal_pending. Setting ptrace_message to a passed in value of 0 is effectively not setting ptrace_message, making that additional work a noop. Returning the result of fatal_signal_pending and letting the caller ignore the result becomes a noop in this change. When a process is ptraced, the flag PT_PTRACED is always set in current->ptrace. Testing for PT_PTRACED in ptrace_report_syscall is just an optimization to fail early if the process is not ptraced. Later on in ptrace_notify, ptrace_stop will test current->ptrace under tasklist_lock and skip performing any work if the task is not ptraced. exit: Add and use make_task_dead.
There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate a task after something catastrophic has happened like a NULL pointer in kernel code. Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new concept. Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic task cleanup with make_task_dead to make it clear what the code is doing. As part of this rename rewind_stack_do_exit rewind_stack_and_make_dead. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. Biederman" <ebiederm@xmission.com> |

m68k: Enable memtest functionality
Enable the memtest functionality and rearrange some code to prevent it from clobbering the initrd. The code to implement CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD was conditional on !defined(CONFIG_SUN3). For simplicity, remove that test on the basis that m68k_ramdisk.size == 0 on Sun 3. The SLIME source code at http://sammy.net/sun3/ftp/pub/m68k/sun3/slime/slime-2.0.tar.gz indicates that no BI_RAMDISK entry is ever passed to the kernel due to #ifdef 0 around the relevant code. signal: Replace force_fatal_sig with force_exit_sig when in doubt
Recently to prevent issues with SECCOMP_RET_KILL and similar signals being changed before they are delivered SA_IMMUTABLE was added. Unfortunately this broke debuggers[1][2] which reasonably expect to be able to trap synchronous SIGTRAP and SIGSEGV even when the target process is not configured to handle those signals. Add force_exit_sig and use it instead of force_fatal_sig where historically the code has directly called do_exit. This has the implementation benefits of going through the signal exit path (including generating core dumps) without the danger of allowing userspace to ignore or change these signals. This avoids userspace regressions as older kernels exited with do_exit which debuggers also can not intercept. In the future is should be possible to improve the quality of implementation of the kernel by changing some of these force_exit_sig calls to force_fatal_sig. That can be done where it matters on a case-by-case basis with careful analysis. Add linux/cacheflush.h
Many architectures do not include asm-generic/cacheflush.h, so turn
the includes on their head and add linux/cacheflush.h which includes
asm/cacheflush.h.
Move the flush_dcache_folio() declaration from asm-generic/cacheflush.h
to linux/cacheflush.h and change linux/highmem.h to include
linux/cacheflush.h instead of asm/cacheflush.h so that all necessary
places will see flush_dcache_folio().
More functions should have their default implementations moved in the
future, but those are for follow-on patches. This fixes csky, sparc and
sparc64 which were missed in the commit which added flush_dcache_folio().

Pull exit cleanups from Eric Biederman: "While looking at some issues related to the exit path in the kernel I found several instances where the code is not using the existing abstractions properly. This set of changes introduces force_fatal_sig a way of sending a signal and not allowing it to be caught, and corrects the misuse of the existing abstractions that I found. A lot of the misuse of the existing abstractions are silly things such as doing something after calling a no return function, rolling BUG by hand, doing more work than necessary to terminate a kernel thread, or calling do_exit(SIGKILL) instead of calling force_sig(SIGKILL). In the review a deficiency in force_fatal_sig and force_sig_seccomp where ptrace or sigaction could prevent the delivery of the signal was found. I have added a change that adds SA_IMMUTABLE to change that makes it impossible to interrupt the delivery of those signals, and allows backporting to fix force_sig_seccomp And Arnd found an issue where a function passed to kthread_run had the wrong prototype, and after my cleanup was failing to build." * 'exit-cleanups-for-v5.16' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiederm/user-namespace: (23 commits) soc: ti: fix wkup_m3_rproc_boot_thread return type signal: Add SA_IMMUTABLE to ensure forced siganls do not get changed signal: Replace force_sigsegv(SIGSEGV) with force_fatal_sig(SIGSEGV) exit/r8188eu: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8712: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 exit/rtl8723bs: Replace the macro thread_exit with a simple return 0 signal/x86: In emulate_vsyscall force a signal instead of calling do_exit signal/sparc32: In setup_rt_frame and setup_fram use force_fatal_sig signal/sparc32: Exit with a fatal signal when try_to_clear_window_buffer fails exit/syscall_user_dispatch: Send ordinary signals on failure signal: Implement force_fatal_sig exit/kthread: Have kernel threads return instead of calling do_exit signal/s390: Use force_sigsegv in default_trap_handler signal/vm86_32: Properly send SIGSEGV when the vm86 state cannot be saved. signal/vm86_32: Replace open coded BUG_ON with an actual BUG_ON signal/sparc: In setup_tsb_params convert open coded BUG into BUG signal/powerpc: On swapcontext failure force SIGSEGV signal/sh: Use force_sig(SIGKILL) instead of do_group_exit(SIGKILL) signal/mips: Update (_save|_restore)_fp_context to fail with -EFAULT signal/sparc32: Remove unreachable do_exit in do_sparc_fault ... |

memblock: allow to specify flags with memblock_add_node()
We want to specify flags when hotplugging memory. Let's prepare to pass flags to memblock_add_node() by adjusting all existing users. Note that when hotplugging memory the system is already up and running and we might have concurrent memblock users: for example, while we're hotplugging memory, kexec_file code might search for suitable memory regions to place kexec images. It's important to add the memory directly to memblock via a single call with the right flags, instead of adding the memory first and apply flags later: otherwise, concurrent memblock users might temporarily stumble over memblocks with wrong flags, which will be important in a follow-up patch that introduces a new flag to properly handle add_memory_driver_managed(). Scheduler updates:
- Revert the printk format based wchan() symbol resolution as it can leak the raw value in case that the symbol is not resolvable. - Make wchan() more robust and work with all kind of unwinders by enforcing that the task stays blocked while unwinding is in progress. - Prevent sched_fork() from accessing an invalid sched_task_group - Improve asymmetric packing logic - Extend scheduler statistics to RT and DL scheduling classes and add statistics for bandwith burst to the SCHED_FAIR class. - Properly account SCHED_IDLE entities - Prevent a potential deadlock when initial priority is assigned to a newly created kthread. A recent change to plug a race between cpuset and __sched_setscheduler() introduced a new lock dependency which is now triggered. Break the lock dependency chain by moving the priority assignment to the thread function. - Fix the idle time reporting in /proc/uptime for NOHZ enabled systems. - Improve idle balancing in general and especially for NOHZ enabled systems. - Provide proper interfaces for live patching so it does not have to fiddle with scheduler internals. - Add cluster aware scheduling support. - A small set of tweaks for RT (irqwork, wait_task_inactive(), various scheduler options and delaying mmdrop) - The usual small tweaks and improvements all over the place -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJHBAABCgAxFiEEQp8+kY+LLUocC4bMphj1TA10mKEFAmF/OUkTHHRnbHhAbGlu dXRyb25peC5kZQAKCRCmGPVMDXSYoR/5D/9ikdGNpKg9osNqJ3GjAmxsK6kVkB29 iFe2k8pIpWDToWQf/wQRGih4Yj3Cl49QSnZcPIibh2/12EB1qrrW6iSPJkInz8Ec /1LS5/Vewn2OyoxyXZjdvGC5gTXEodSbIazASvX7nvdMeI4gsAsL5etzrMJirT/t aymqvr7zovvywrwMTQJrGjUMo9l4ewE8tafMNNhRu1BHU1U4ojM9yvThyRAAcmp7 3Xy49A+Yq3IgrvYI4u8FMK5Zh08KaxSFjiLhePGm/bF+wSfYmWop2TP1jY05W2Uo ti8hfbJMUoFRYuMxAiEldkItnc0wV4M9PtWZZ/x+B71bs65Y4Zjt9cW+rxJv2+m1 vzV31EsQwGnOti072dzWN4c/cZqngVXAjaNtErvDwJUr+Tw1ayv9KUvuodMQqZY6 mu68bFUO2kV9EMe1CBOv51Uy1RGHyLj3rlNqrkw+Xp5ISE9Ad2vhUEiRp5bQx5Ci V/XFhGZkGUluh0vccrdFlNYZwhj8cZEzkOPCnPSeZ+bq8SyZE6xuHH/lTP1CJCOy s800rW1huM+kgV+zRN8adDkGXibAk9N3RtVGnQXmuEy8gB9LZmQg+JeM2wsc9B+6 i0gdqZnsjNAfoK+BBAG4holxptSL8/eOJsFH8ZNIoxQ+iqooyPx9tFX7yXnRTBQj d2qWG7UvoseT+g== =fgtS -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'sched-core-2021-11-01' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull scheduler updates from Thomas Gleixner: - Revert the printk format based wchan() symbol resolution as it can leak the raw value in case that the symbol is not resolvable.
