39d432fc76 NFSD: trace nfsctl operations
Add trace log eye-catchers that record the arguments used to
configure NFSD. This helps when troubleshooting the NFSD
administrative interfaces.

These tracepoints can capture NFSD start-up and shutdown times and
parameters, changes in lease time and thread count, and a request
to end the namespace's NFSv4 grace period, in addition to the set
of NFS versions that are enabled.

2d8ae8c417 nfsd: use vfs setgid helper
We've aligned setgid behavior over multiple kernel releases. The details
can be found in commit cf619f8919 ("Merge tag 'fs.ovl.setgid.v6.2' of
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/idmapping") and
commit 426b4ca2d6 ("Merge tag 'fs.setgid.v6.0' of
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brauner/linux").
Consistent setgid stripping behavior is now encapsulated in the
setattr_should_drop_sgid() helper which is used by all filesystems that
strip setgid bits outside of vfs proper. Usually ATTR_KILL_SGID is
raised in e.g., chown_common() and is subject to the
setattr_should_drop_sgid() check to determine whether the setgid bit can
be retained. Since nfsd is raising ATTR_KILL_SGID unconditionally it
will cause notify_change() to strip it even if the caller had the
necessary privileges to retain it. Ensure that nfsd only raises
ATR_KILL_SGID if the caller lacks the necessary privileges to retain the
setgid bit.

Without this patch the setgid stripping tests in LTP will fail:

c034203b6a nfsd: fix double fget() bug in __write_ports_addfd()
The bug here is that you cannot rely on getting the same socket
from multiple calls to fget() because userspace can influence
that.  This is a kind of double fetch bug.

The fix is to delete the svc_alien_sock() function and instead do
the checking inside the svc_addsock() function.

7cdafe6cc4 exportfs: check for error return value from exportfs_encode_*()
The exportfs_encode_*() helpers call the filesystem ->encode_fh()
method which returns a signed int.

All the in-tree implementations of ->encode_fh() return a positive
integer and FILEID_INVALID (255) for error.

Fortify the callers for possible future ->encode_fh() implementation
that will return a negative error value.

name_to_handle_at() would propagate the returned error to the users
if filesystem ->encode_fh() method returns an error.

notify_change can modify the iattr structure. In particular it can
end up setting ATTR_MODE when ATTR_KILL_SUID is already set, causing
a BUG() if the same iattr is passed to notify_change more than once.

Instead of open coding a __dynamic_array(), use the __string() and
__assign_str() helper macros that exist for this kind of use case.

Part of an effort to remove deprecated strlcpy() [1] completely from the

Tetsuo Handa points out:

The original intent was to hold the inode lock while estimating
the buffer requirements for the requested information. Frank van
der Linden, the author of NFSD's xattr code, says:

> querying the xattr length with a NULL buf argument (just getting
> the length back), allocating the right buffer size, and then

However, Dave Chinner states:

Since these code paths acquire a dentry, they do indeed hold a
reference. It is therefore safe to use GFP_KERNEL for these memory
allocations. In particular, that's what this code is already doing;
but now the C source code looks sane too.

At a later time we can revisit in order to remove the inode lock in
favor of simply retrying if the estimated buffer size is too small.

This patch restores the handling of race condition in nfsd_file_do_acquire
with unlink to that prior of the regression.

When queueing a dispose list to the appropriate "freeme" lists, it
pointlessly queues the objects one at a time to an intermediate list.

Remove a few helpers and just open code a list_move to make it more
clear and efficient. Better document the resulting functions with
kerneldoc comments.

0f5162480b NFSD: Watch for rq_pages bounds checking errors in nfsd_splice_actor()
There have been several bugs over the years where the NFSD splice
actor has attempted to write outside the rq_pages array.

This is a "should never happen" condition, but if for some reason
the pipe splice actor should attempt to walk past the end of
rq_pages, it needs to terminate the READ operation to prevent
corruption of the pointer addresses in the fields just beyond the
array.

A server crash is thus prevented. Since the code is not behaving,
the READ operation returns -EIO to the client. None of the READ
payload data can be trusted if the splice actor isn't operating as
expected.

cf64b9bce9 SUNRPC: return proper error from get_expiry()
The get_expiry() function currently returns a timestamp, and uses the
special return value of 0 to indicate an error.

Unfortunately this causes a problem when 0 is the correct return value.

On a system with no RTC it is possible that the boot time will be seen
to be "3".  When exportfs probes to see if a particular filesystem
supports NFS export it tries to cache information with an expiry time of
"3".  The intention is for this to be "long in the past".  Even with no
RTC it will not be far in the future (at most a second or two) so this
is harmless.
But if the boot time happens to have been calculated to be "3", then
get_expiry will fail incorrectly as it converts the number to "seconds
since bootime" - 0.

To avoid this problem we change get_expiry() to report the error quite
separately from the expiry time.  The error is now the return value.
The expiry time is reported through a by-reference parameter.

c4c649ab41 NFSD: Convert filecache to rhltable
While we were converting the nfs4_file hashtable to use the kernel's
resizable hashtable data structure, Neil Brown observed that the
list variant (rhltable) would be better for managing nfsd_file items
as well. The nfsd_file hash table will contain multiple entries for
the same inode -- these should be kept together on a list. And, it
could be possible for exotic or malicious client behavior to cause
the hash table to resize itself on every insertion.

A nice simplification is that rhltable_lookup() can return a list
that contains only nfsd_file items that match a given inode, which
enables us to eliminate specialized hash table helper functions and
use the default functions provided by the rhashtable implementation).

Since we are now storing nfsd_file items for the same inode on a
single list, that effectively reduces the number of hash entries
that have to be tracked in the hash table. The mininum bucket count
is therefore lowered.

Light testing with fstests generic/531 show no regressions.

dcb779fcd4 nfsd: allow reaping files still under writeback
On most filesystems, there is no reason to delay reaping an nfsd_file
just because its underlying inode is still under writeback. nfsd just
relies on client activity or the local flusher threads to do writeback.

The main exception is NFS, which flushes all of its dirty data on last
close. Add a new EXPORT_OP_FLUSH_ON_CLOSE flag to allow filesystems to
signal that they do this, and only skip closing files under writeback on
such filesystems.

Also, remove a redundant NULL file pointer check in

Since v4 files are expected to be long-lived, there's little value in
closing them out of the cache when there is conflicting access.

Change the comparator to also match the gc value in the key. Change both

15a8b55dbb nfsd: call op_release, even when op_func returns an error
For ops with "trivial" replies, nfsd4_encode_operation will shortcut
most of the encoding work and skip to just marshalling up the status.
One of the things it skips is calling op_release. This could cause a
memory leak in the layoutget codepath if there is an error at an
inopportune time.

Have the compound processing engine always call op_release, even when
op_func sets an error in op->status. With this change, we also need
nfsd4_block_get_device_info_scsi to set the gd_device pointer to NULL
on error to avoid a double free.

804d8e0a6e NFSD: Avoid calling OPDESC() with ops->opnum == OP_ILLEGAL
OPDESC() simply indexes into nfsd4_ops[] by the op's operation
number, without range checking that value. It assumes callers are
careful to avoid calling it with an out-of-bounds opnum value.

nfsd4_decode_compound() is not so careful, and can invoke OPDESC()
with opnum set to OP_ILLEGAL, which is 10044 -- well beyond the end
of nfsd4_ops[].

27c934dd88 nfsd: don't replace page in rq_pages if it's a continuation of last page
The splice read calls nfsd_splice_actor to put the pages containing file
data into the svc_rqst->rq_pages array. It's possible however to get a
splice result that only has a partial page at the end, if (e.g.) the
filesystem hands back a short read that doesn't cover the whole page.

nfsd_splice_actor will plop the partial page into its rq_pages array and
return. Then later, when nfsd_splice_actor is called again, the
remainder of the page may end up being filled out. At this point,
nfsd_splice_actor will put the page into the array _again_ corrupting
the reply. If this is done enough times, rq_next_page will overrun the
array and corrupt the trailing fields -- the rq_respages and
rq_next_page pointers themselves.

If we've already added the page to the array in the last pass, don't add
it to the array a second time when dealing with a splice continuation.
This was originally handled properly in nfsd_splice_actor, but commit
91e23b1c39 ("NFSD: Clean up nfsd_splice_actor()") removed the check
for it.

This behavior is triggered by the "default y" in the definition of
RPCSEC_GSS.

The "default y" was added in 2010 by commit df486a2590 ("NFS: Fix
the selection of security flavours in Kconfig"). However,
svc_gss_principal was removed in 2012 by commit 03a4e1f6dd
("nfsd4: move principal name into svc_cred"), so the 2010 fix is
no longer necessary. We can safely change the NFS_V4 and NFSD_V4
dependencies back to RPCSEC_GSS_KRB5 to get the nicer v6.2
behavior back.

Selecting KRB5 symbolically represents the true requirement here:
that all spec-compliant NFSv4 implementations must have Kerberos
available to use.

 - Last cycle we introduced the dedicated struct mnt_idmap type for
   mount idmapping and the required infrastucture in 256c8aed2b ("fs:
   introduce dedicated idmap type for mounts"). As promised in last
   cycle's pull request message this converts everything to rely on
   struct mnt_idmap.

   Currently we still pass around the plain namespace that was attached
   to a mount. This is in general pretty convenient but it makes it easy
   to conflate namespaces that are relevant on the filesystem with
   namespaces that are relevant on the mount level. Especially for
   non-vfs developers without detailed knowledge in this area this was a
   potential source for bugs.

   This finishes the conversion. Instead of passing the plain namespace
   around this updates all places that currently take a pointer to a
   mnt_userns with a pointer to struct mnt_idmap.

   Now that the conversion is done all helpers down to the really
   low-level helpers only accept a struct mnt_idmap argument instead of
   two namespace arguments.

   Conflating mount and other idmappings will now cause the compiler to
   complain loudly thus eliminating the possibility of any bugs. This
   makes it impossible for filesystem developers to mix up mount and
   filesystem idmappings as they are two distinct types and require
   distinct helpers that cannot be used interchangeably.

   Everything associated with struct mnt_idmap is moved into a single
   separate file. With that change no code can poke around in struct
   mnt_idmap. It can only be interacted with through dedicated helpers.
   That means all filesystems are and all of the vfs is completely
   oblivious to the actual implementation of idmappings.

   We are now also able to extend struct mnt_idmap as we see fit. For
   example, we can decouple it completely from namespaces for users that
   don't require or don't want to use them at all. We can also extend
   the concept of idmappings so we can cover filesystem specific
   requirements.

   In combination with the vfs{g,u}id_t work we finished in v6.2 this
   makes this feature substantially more robust and thus difficult to
   implement wrong by a given filesystem and also protects the vfs.

 - Enable idmapped mounts for tmpfs and fulfill a longstanding request.

   A long-standing request from users had been to make it possible to
   create idmapped mounts for tmpfs. For example, to share the host's
   tmpfs mount between multiple sandboxes. This is a prerequisite for
   some advanced Kubernetes cases. Systemd also has a range of use-cases
   to increase service isolation. And there are more users of this.

   However, with all of the other work going on this was way down on the
   priority list but luckily someone other than ourselves picked this
   up.

   As usual the patch is tiny as all the infrastructure work had been
   done multiple kernel releases ago. In addition to all the tests that
   we already have I requested that Rodrigo add a dedicated tmpfs
   testsuite for idmapped mounts to xfstests. It is to be included into
   xfstests during the v6.3 development cycle. This should add a slew of
   additional tests.

4c475eee02 nfsd: don't fsync nfsd_files on last close
Most of the time, NFSv4 clients issue a COMMIT before the final CLOSE of
an open stateid, so with NFSv4, the fsync in the nfsd_file_free path is
usually a no-op and doesn't block.

We have a customer running knfsd over very slow storage (XFS over Ceph
RBD). They were using the "async" export option because performance was
more important than data integrity for this application. That export
option turns NFSv4 COMMIT calls into no-ops. Due to the fsync in this
codepath however, their final CLOSE calls would still stall (since a
CLOSE effectively became a COMMIT).

I think this fsync is not strictly necessary. We only use that result to
reset the write verifier. Instead of fsync'ing all of the data when we
free an nfsd_file, we can just check for writeback errors when one is
acquired and when it is freed.

If the client never comes back, then it'll never see the error anyway
and there is no point in resetting it. If an error occurs after the
nfsd_file is removed from the cache but before the inode is evicted,
then it will reset the write verifier on the next nfsd_file_acquire,
(since there will be an unseen error).

The only exception here is if something else opens and fsyncs the file
during that window. Given that local applications work with this
limitation today, I don't see that as an issue.

826b67e637 nfsd: don't hand out delegation on setuid files being opened for write
We had a bug report that xfstest generic/355 was failing on NFSv4.0.
This test sets various combinations of setuid/setgid modes and tests
whether DIO writes will cause them to be stripped.

What I found was that the server did properly strip those bits, but
the client didn't notice because it held a delegation that was not
recalled. The recall didn't occur because the client itself was the
one generating the activity and we avoid recalls in that case.

Clearing setuid bits is an "implicit" activity. The client didn't
specifically request that we do that, so we need the server to issue a
CB_RECALL, or avoid the situation entirely by not issuing a delegation.

The easiest fix here is to simply not give out a delegation if the file
is being opened for write, and the mode has the setuid and/or setgid bit
set. Note that there is a potential race between the mode and lease
being set, so we test for this condition both before and after setting
the lease.

This patch fixes generic/355, generic/683 and generic/684 for me. (Note
that 355 fails only on v4.0, and 683 and 684 require NFSv4.2 to run and
fail).

6ba434cb1a nfsd: clean up potential nfsd_file refcount leaks in COPY codepath
There are two different flavors of the nfsd4_copy struct. One is
embedded in the compound and is used directly in synchronous copies. The
other is dynamically allocated, refcounted and tracked in the client
struture. For the embedded one, the cleanup just involves releasing any
nfsd_files held on its behalf. For the async one, the cleanup is a bit
more involved, and we need to dequeue it from lists, unhash it, etc.

There is at least one potential refcount leak in this code now. If the
kthread_create call fails, then both the src and dst nfsd_files in the
original nfsd4_copy object are leaked.

The cleanup in this codepath is also sort of weird. In the async copy
case, we'll have up to four nfsd_file references (src and dst for both
flavors of copy structure). They are both put at the end of
nfsd4_do_async_copy, even though the ones held on behalf of the embedded
one outlive that structure.

Change it so that we always clean up the nfsd_file refs held by the
embedded copy structure before nfsd4_copy returns. Rework
cleanup_async_copy to handle both inter and intra copies. Eliminate
nfsd4_cleanup_intra_ssc since it now becomes a no-op.

1f0001d43d nfsd: zero out pointers after putting nfsd_files on COPY setup error
At first, I thought this might be a source of nfsd_file overputs, but
the current callers seem to avoid an extra put when nfsd4_verify_copy
returns an error.

Still, it's "bad form" to leave the pointers filled out when we don't
have a reference to them anymore, and that might lead to bugs later.
Zero them out as a defensive coding measure.

Now that I've added a file under /proc/net/rpc that is managed by
the SunRPC's Kerberos mechanism, replace NFSD's
supported_krb5_enctypes file with a symlink to the new SunRPC proc
file, which contains exactly the same content.

Remarkably, commit b0b0c0a26e ("nfsd: add proc file listing
kernel's gss_krb5 enctypes") added the nfsd_supported_krb5_enctypes
file in 2011, but this file has never been documented in nfsd(7).

cee4db1945 SUNRPC: Refactor RPC server dispatch method
Currently, svcauth_gss_accept() pre-reserves response buffer space
for the RPC payload length and GSS sequence number before returning
to the dispatcher, which then adds the header's accept_stat field.

The problem is the accept_stat field is supposed to go before the
length and seq_num fields. So svcauth_gss_release() has to relocate
the accept_stat value (see svcauth_gss_prepare_to_wrap()).

To enable these fields to be added to the response buffer in the
correct (final) order, the pointer to the accept_stat has to be made
available to svcauth_gss_accept() so that it can set it before
reserving space for the length and seq_num fields.

As a first step, move the pointer to the location of the accept_stat
field into struct svc_rqst.

bd6aaf781d nfsd: fix potential race in nfs4_find_file
The WARN_ON_ONCE check is not terribly useful. It also seems possible
for nfs4_find_file to race with the destruction of an fi_deleg_file
while trying to take a reference to it.

Now that it's safe to pass nfs_get_file a NULL pointer, remove the WARN
and NULL pointer check. Take the fi_lock when fetching fi_deleg_file.

df24ac7a2e NFSD: enhance inter-server copy cleanup
Currently nfsd4_setup_inter_ssc returns the vfsmount of the source
server's export when the mount completes. After the copy is done
nfsd4_cleanup_inter_ssc is called with the vfsmount of the source
server and it searches nfsd_ssc_mount_list for a matching entry
to do the clean up.

The problems with this approach are (1) the need to search the
nfsd_ssc_mount_list and (2) the code has to handle the case where
the matching entry is not found which looks ugly.

The enhancement is instead of nfsd4_setup_inter_ssc returning the
vfsmount, it returns the nfsd4_ssc_umount_item which has the
vfsmount embedded in it. When nfsd4_cleanup_inter_ssc is called
it's passed with the nfsd4_ssc_umount_item directly to do the
clean up so no searching is needed and there is no need to handle
the 'not found' case.

50f5fdaea9 NFSD: Teach nfsd_mountpoint() auto mounts
Currently nfsd_mountpoint() tests for mount points using d_mountpoint(),
this works only when a mount point is already uncovered.
In our case the mount point is of type auto mount and can be coverted.
i.e. ->d_automount() was not called.

Using d_managed() nfsd_mountpoint() can test whether a mount point is
either already uncovered or can be uncovered later.

638e3e7d94 nfsd: use the getattr operation to fetch i_version
Now that we can call into vfs_getattr to get the i_version field, use
that facility to fetch it instead of doing it in nfsd4_change_attribute.

Neil also pointed out recently that IS_I_VERSION directory operations
are always logged, and so we only need to mitigate the rollback problem
on regular files. Also, we don't need to factor in the ctime when
reexporting NFS or Ceph.

Set the STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE (and BTIME) bits in the request when we're
dealing with a v4 request. Then, instead of looking at IS_I_VERSION when
generating the change attr, look at the result mask and only use it if
STATX_CHANGE_COOKIE is set.

Change nfsd4_change_attribute to only factor in the ctime if it's a
regular file and the fs doesn't advertise STATX_ATTR_CHANGE_MONOTONIC.

nfsd_file_cache_purge is called when the server is shutting down, in
which case, tearing things down is generally fine, but it also gets
called when the exports cache is flushed.

Instead of walking the cache and freeing everything unconditionally,
handle it the same as when we have a notification of conflicting access.

f385f7d244 NFSD: register/unregister of nfsd-client shrinker at nfsd startup/shutdown time
Currently the nfsd-client shrinker is registered and unregistered at
the time the nfsd module is loaded and unloaded. The problem with this
is the shrinker is being registered before all of the relevant fields
in nfsd_net are initialized when nfsd is started. This can lead to an
oops when memory is low and the shrinker is called while nfsd is not
running.

This patch moves the  register/unregister of nfsd-client shrinker from
module load/unload time to nfsd startup/shutdown time.

5970e15dbc filelock: move file locking definitions to separate header file
The file locking definitions have lived in fs.h since the dawn of time,
but they are only used by a small subset of the source files that
include it.

Move the file locking definitions to a new header file, and add the
appropriate #include directives to the source files that need them. By
doing this we trim down fs.h a bit and limit the amount of rebuilding
that has to be done when we make changes to the file locking APIs.

0b3a551fa5 nfsd: fix handling of cached open files in nfsd4_open codepath
Commit fb70bf124b ("NFSD: Instantiate a struct file when creating a
regular NFSv4 file") added the ability to cache an open fd over a
compound. There are a couple of problems with the way this currently
works:

It's racy, as a newly-created nfsd_file can end up with its PENDING bit
cleared while the nf is hashed, and the nf_file pointer is still zeroed
out. Other tasks can find it in this state and they expect to see a
valid nf_file, and can oops if nf_file is NULL.

Also, there is no guarantee that we'll end up creating a new nfsd_file
if one is already in the hash. If an extant entry is in the hash with a
valid nf_file, nfs4_get_vfs_file will clobber its nf_file pointer with
the value of op_file and the old nf_file will leak.

Fix both issues by making a new nfsd_file_acquirei_opened variant that
takes an optional file pointer. If one is present when this is called,
we'll take a new reference to it instead of trying to open the file. If
the nfsd_file already has a valid nf_file, we'll just ignore the
optional file and pass the nfsd_file back as-is.

Also rework the tracepoints a bit to allow for an "opened" variant and
don't try to avoid counting acquisitions in the case where we already
have a cached open file.

cad853374d nfsd: fix handling of readdir in v4root vs. mount upcall timeout
If v4 READDIR operation hits a mountpoint and gets back an error,
then it will include that entry in the reply and set RDATTR_ERROR for it
to the error.

That's fine for "normal" exported filesystems, but on the v4root, we
need to be more careful to only expose the existence of dentries that
lead to exports.

If the mountd upcall times out while checking to see whether a
mountpoint on the v4root is exported, then we have no recourse other
than to fail the whole operation.

789e1e10f2 nfsd: shut down the NFSv4 state objects before the filecache
Currently, we shut down the filecache before trying to clean up the
stateids that depend on it. This leads to the kernel trying to free an
nfsd_file twice, and a refcount overput on the nf_mark.

Change the shutdown procedure to tear down all of the stateids prior
to shutting down the filecache.

75333d48f9 NFSD: fix use-after-free in __nfs42_ssc_open()
Problem caused by source's vfsmount being unmounted but remains
on the delayed unmount list. This happens when nfs42_ssc_open()
return errors.

Fixed by removing nfsd4_interssc_connect(), leave the vfsmount
for the laundromat to unmount when idle time expires.

We don't need to call nfs_do_sb_deactive when nfs42_ssc_open
return errors since the file was not opened so nfs_server->active
was not incremented. Same as in nfsd4_copy, if we fail to
launch nfsd4_do_async_copy thread then there's no need to
call nfs_do_sb_deactive

  The origins of this work trace back to v5.19 but it took quite a while
  to understand the various filesystem specific implementations in
  sufficient detail and also come up with an acceptable solution.

  As we discussed and seen multiple times the current state of how posix
  acls are handled isn't nice and comes with a lot of problems: The
  current way of handling posix acls via the generic xattr api is error
  prone, hard to maintain, and type unsafe for the vfs until we call
  into the filesystem's dedicated get and set inode operations.

  It is already the case that posix acls are special-cased to death all
  the way through the vfs. There are an uncounted number of hacks that
  operate on the uapi posix acl struct instead of the dedicated vfs
  struct posix_acl. And the vfs must be involved in order to interpret
  and fixup posix acls before storing them to the backing store, caching
  them, reporting them to userspace, or for permission checking.

  Currently a range of hacks and duct tape exist to make this work. As
  with most things this is really no ones fault it's just something that
  happened over time. But the code is hard to understand and difficult
  to maintain and one is constantly at risk of introducing bugs and
  regressions when having to touch it.

  Instead of continuing to hack posix acls through the xattr handlers
  this series builds a dedicated posix acl api solely around the get and
  set inode operations.

  Going forward, the vfs_get_acl(), vfs_remove_acl(), and vfs_set_acl()
  helpers must be used in order to interact with posix acls. They
  operate directly on the vfs internal struct posix_acl instead of
  abusing the uapi posix acl struct as we currently do. In the end this
  removes all of the hackiness, makes the codepaths easier to maintain,
  and gets us type safety.

  This series passes the LTP and xfstests suites without any
  regressions. For xfstests the following combinations were tested:
   - xfs
   - ext4
   - btrfs
   - overlayfs
   - overlayfs on top of idmapped mounts
   - orangefs
   - (limited) cifs

  There's more simplifications for posix acls that we can make in the
  future if the basic api has made it.

  A few implementation details:

   - The series makes sure to retain exactly the same security and
     integrity module permission checks. Especially for the integrity
     modules this api is a win because right now they convert the uapi
     posix acl struct passed to them via a void pointer into the vfs
     struct posix_acl format to perform permission checking on the mode.

     There's a new dedicated security hook for setting posix acls which
     passes the vfs struct posix_acl not a void pointer. Basing checking
     on the posix acl stored in the uapi format is really unreliable.
     The vfs currently hacks around directly in the uapi struct storing
     values that frankly the security and integrity modules can't
     correctly interpret as evidenced by bugs we reported and fixed in
     this area. It's not necessarily even their fault it's just that the
     format we provide to them is sub optimal.

   - Some filesystems like 9p and cifs need access to the dentry in
     order to get and set posix acls which is why they either only
     partially or not even at all implement get and set inode
     operations. For example, cifs allows setxattr() and getxattr()
     operations but doesn't allow permission checking based on posix
     acls because it can't implement a get acl inode operation.

     Thus, this patch series updates the set acl inode operation to take
     a dentry instead of an inode argument. However, for the get acl
     inode operation we can't do this as the old get acl method is
     called in e.g., generic_permission() and inode_permission(). These
     helpers in turn are called in various filesystem's permission inode
     operation. So passing a dentry argument to the old get acl inode
     operation would amount to passing a dentry to the permission inode
     operation which we shouldn't and probably can't do.

     So instead of extending the existing inode operation Christoph
     suggested to add a new one. He also requested to ensure that the
     get and set acl inode operation taking a dentry are consistently
     named. So for this version the old get acl operation is renamed to
     ->get_inode_acl() and a new ->get_acl() inode operation taking a
     dentry is added. With this we can give both 9p and cifs get and set
     acl inode operations and in turn remove their complex custom posix
     xattr handlers.

     In the future I hope to get rid of the inode method duplication but
     it isn't like we have never had this situation. Readdir is just one
     example. And frankly, the overall gain in type safety and the more
     pleasant api wise are simply too big of a benefit to not accept
     this duplication for a while.

   - We've done a full audit of every codepaths using variant of the
     current generic xattr api to get and set posix acls and
     surprisingly it isn't that many places. There's of course always a
     chance that we might have missed some and if so I'm sure we'll find
     them soon enough.

     The crucial codepaths to be converted are obviously stacking
     filesystems such as ecryptfs and overlayfs.

     For a list of all callers currently using generic xattr api helpers
     see [2] including comments whether they support posix acls or not.

   - The old vfs generic posix acl infrastructure doesn't obey the
     create and replace semantics promised on the setxattr(2) manpage.
     This patch series doesn't address this. It really is something we
     should revisit later though.

  The patches are roughly organized as follows:

   (1) Change existing set acl inode operation to take a dentry
       argument (Intended to be a non-functional change)

   (2) Rename existing get acl method (Intended to be a non-functional
       change)

   (3) Implement get and set acl inode operations for filesystems that
       couldn't implement one before because of the missing dentry.
       That's mostly 9p and cifs (Intended to be a non-functional
       change)

   (4) Build posix acl api, i.e., add vfs_get_acl(), vfs_remove_acl(),
       and vfs_set_acl() including security and integrity hooks
       (Intended to be a non-functional change)

   (5) Implement get and set acl inode operations for stacking
       filesystems (Intended to be a non-functional change)

   (6) Switch posix acl handling in stacking filesystems to new posix
       acl api now that all filesystems it can stack upon support it.

   (7) Switch vfs to new posix acl api (semantical change)

   (8) Remove all now unused helpers

   (9) Additional regression fixes reported after we merged this into
       linux-next

 "The main change here is to add the new locks_inode_context helper, and

  There is a new helper to indicate whether any locks are held on an
  inode. This is mostly for Ceph but may be usable elsewhere too.

  Andi Kleen requested that we print the PID when the LOCK_MAND warning
  fires, to help track down applications trying to use it.

  Finally, we added some new warnings to some of the file locking
  functions that fire when the ->fl_file and filp arguments differ. This
  helped us find some long-standing bugs in lockd. Patches for those are
