some memory allocations have been done before that. We must release those

TLS recvmsg() passes user pages as destination for decrypt.
The decrypt operation is repeated record by record, each
record being 16kB, max. TLS allocates an sg_table and uses
iov_iter_get_pages() to populate it with enough pages to
fit the decrypted record.
Even though we decrypt a single message at a time we size
the sg_table based on the entire length of the iovec.
This leads to unnecessarily large allocations, risking
triggering OOM conditions.
Use iov_iter_truncate() / iov_iter_reexpand() to construct
a "capped" version of iov_iter_npages(). Alternatively we
could parametrize iov_iter_npages() to take the size as
arg instead of using i->count, or do something else..

unless TX is also configured. Similarly we plug both of those

Last but not least we always plug in something based on inet_stream_ops

the record type check into the decrypt if(). The skb may already

Note that decrypt_skb_update() is idempotent and updates ctx->decrypted
so the if() is pointless.
Reorder the check for decryption errors with the content type check
while touching them. This part is not really a bug, because if
decryption failed in TLS 1.3 content type will be DATA, and for
TLS 1.2 it will be correct. Nevertheless its strange to touch output

We got multiple reports that multi_chunk_sendfile test
case from tls selftest fails. This was sort of expected,
as the original fix was never applied (see it in the first
Link:). The test in question uses sendfile() with count
larger than the size of the underlying file. This will
make splice set MSG_MORE on all sendpage calls, meaning
TLS will never close and flush the last partial record.
Eric seem to have addressed a similar problem in
commit 35f9c09fe9 ("tcp: tcp_sendpages() should call tcp_push() once")
by introducing MSG_SENDPAGE_NOTLAST. Unlike MSG_MORE
MSG_SENDPAGE_NOTLAST is not set on the last call
of a "pipefull" of data (PIPE_DEF_BUFFERS == 16,
so every 16 pages or whenever we run out of data).
Having a break every 16 pages should be fine, TLS
can pack exactly 4 pages into a record, so for
aligned reads there should be no difference,
unaligned may see one extra record per sendpage().
Sticking to TCP semantics seems preferable to modifying
splice, but we can revisit it if real life scenarios
show a regression.

When a netdev with active TLS offload goes down, tls_device_down is
called to stop the offload and tear down the TLS context. However, the
socket stays alive, and it still points to the TLS context, which is now
deallocated. If a netdev goes up, while the connection is still active,
and the data flow resumes after a number of TCP retransmissions, it will
lead to a use-after-free of the TLS context.
This commit addresses this bug by keeping the context alive until its
normal destruction, and implements the necessary fallbacks, so that the
connection can resume in software (non-offloaded) kTLS mode.
On the TX side tls_sw_fallback is used to encrypt all packets. The RX
side already has all the necessary fallbacks, because receiving
non-decrypted packets is supported. The thing needed on the RX side is
to block resync requests, which are normally produced after receiving
non-decrypted packets.
The necessary synchronization is implemented for a graceful teardown:
first the fallbacks are deployed, then the driver resources are released
(it used to be possible to have a tls_dev_resync after tls_dev_del).
A new flag called TLS_RX_DEV_DEGRADED is added to indicate the fallback
mode. It's used to skip the RX resync logic completely, as it becomes
useless, and some objects may be released (for example, resync_async,
which is allocated and freed by the driver).

proc_fs was used, in af_packet, without a surrounding #ifdef,
although there is no hard dependency on proc_fs.
That caused the initialization of the af_packet module to fail
when CONFIG_PROC_FS=n.
Specifically, proc_create_net() was used in af_packet.c,
and when it fails, packet_net_init() returns -ENOMEM.
It will always fail when the kernel is compiled without proc_fs,
because, proc_create_net() for example always returns NULL.
The calling order that starts in af_packet.c is as follows:
packet_init()
register_pernet_subsys()
register_pernet_operations()
__register_pernet_operations()
ops_init()
ops->init() (packet_net_ops.init=packet_net_init())
proc_create_net()
It worked in the past because register_pernet_subsys()'s return value
wasn't checked before this Commit 36096f2f4f ("packet: Fix error path in

It always returned an error, but was not checked before, so everything

In case when tcp socket received FIN after some data and the
parser haven't started before reading data caller will receive
an empty buffer. This behavior differs from plain TCP socket and
leads to special treating in user-space.
The flow that triggers the race is simple. Server sends small
amount of data right after the connection is configured to use TLS
and closes the connection. In this case receiver sees TLS Handshake
data, configures TLS socket right after Change Cipher Spec record.
While the configuration is in process, TCP socket receives small
Application Data record, Encrypted Alert record and FIN packet. So
the TCP socket changes sk_shutdown to RCV_SHUTDOWN and sk_flag with
SK_DONE bit set. The received data is not parsed upon arrival and is
never sent to user-space.

At first when sendpage gets called, if there is more data, 'more' in
tls_push_data() gets set which later sets pending_open_record_frags, but
when there is no more data in file left, and last time tls_push_data()
gets called, pending_open_record_frags doesn't get reset. And later when
2 bytes of encrypted alert comes as sendmsg, it first checks for
pending_open_record_frags, and since this is set, it creates a record with
0 data bytes to encrypt, meaning record length is prepend_size + tag_size
only, which causes problem.
We should set/reset pending_open_record_frags based on more bit.

Implement the getsockopt SOL_TLS TLS_RX which is currently missing. The
primary usecase is to use it in conjunction with TCP_REPAIR to
checkpoint/restore the TLS record layer state.
TLS connection state usually exists on the user space library. So
basically we can easily extract it from there, but when the TLS
connections are delegated to the kTLS, it is not the case. We need to
have a way to extract the TLS state from the kernel for both of TX and
RX side.
The new TLS_RX getsockopt copies the crypto_info to user in the same
way as TLS_TX does.
We have described use cases in our research work in Netdev 0x14
Transport Workshop [1].
Also, there is an TLS implementation called tlse [2] which supports
TLS connection migration. They have support of kTLS and their code
shows that they are expecting the future support of this option.

The tls_sw implementation does strict flag checking and does not allow
the MSG_CMSG_COMPAT flag, which is set if the message comes in through
the compat syscall.
This patch adds MSG_CMSG_COMPAT to the flag check to allow the usage of
the TLS SW implementation on systems using the compat syscall path.
Note that the same check is present in the sendmsg path for the TLS
device implementation, however the flag hasn't been added there for lack

This patch adds support for asynchronous resynchronization in tls_device.
Async resync follows two distinct stages:
1. The NIC driver indicates that it would like to resync on some TLS
record within the received packet (P), but the driver does not
know (yet) which of the TLS records within the packet.
At this stage, the NIC driver will query the device to find the exact
TCP sequence for resync (tcpsn), however, the driver does not wait
for the device to provide the response.
2. Eventually, the device responds, and the driver provides the tcpsn
within the resync packet to KTLS. Now, KTLS can check the tcpsn against
any processed TLS records within packet P, and also against any record
that is processed in the future within packet P.
The asynchronous resync path simplifies the device driver, as it can
save bits on the packet completion (32-bit TCP sequence), and pass this
information on an asynchronous command instead.

KTLS uses a stream parser to collect TLS messages and send them to
the upper layer tls receive handler. This ensures the tls receiver
has a full TLS header to parse when it is run. However, when a
socket has BPF_SK_SKB_STREAM_VERDICT program attached before KTLS
is enabled we end up with two stream parsers running on the same
socket.
The result is both try to run on the same socket. First the KTLS
stream parser runs and calls read_sock() which will tcp_read_sock
which in turn calls tcp_rcv_skb(). This dequeues the skb from the
sk_receive_queue. When this is done KTLS code then data_ready()
callback which because we stacked KTLS on top of the bpf stream
verdict program has been replaced with sk_psock_start_strp(). This
will in turn kick the stream parser again and eventually do the
same thing KTLS did above calling into tcp_rcv_skb() and dequeuing
a skb from the sk_receive_queue.
At this point the data stream is broke. Part of the stream was
handled by the KTLS side some other bytes may have been handled
by the BPF side. Generally this results in either missing data
or more likely a "Bad Message" complaint from the kTLS receive
handler as the BPF program steals some bytes meant to be in a
TLS header and/or the TLS header length is no longer correct.
We've already broke the idealized model where we can stack ULPs
in any order with generic callbacks on the TX side to handle this.
So in this patch we do the same thing but for RX side. We add
a sk_psock_strp_enabled() helper so TLS can learn a BPF verdict
program is running and add a tls_sw_has_ctx_rx() helper so BPF
side can learn there is a TLS ULP on the socket.
Then on BPF side we omit calling our stream parser to avoid
breaking the data stream for the KTLS receiver. Then on the
KTLS side we call BPF_SK_SKB_STREAM_VERDICT once the KTLS
receiver is done with the packet but before it posts the
msg to userspace. This gives us symmetry between the TX and
RX halfs and IMO makes it usable again. On the TX side we
process packets in this order BPF -> TLS -> TCP and on
the receive side in the reverse order TCP -> TLS -> BPF.

This patch adds a field to the tls rx offload context which enables
drivers to force a send_resync call.
This field can be used by drivers to request a resync at the next
possible tls record. It is beneficial for hardware that provides the
resync sequence number asynchronously. In such cases, the packet that
triggered the resync does not contain the information required for a
resync. Instead, the driver requests resync for all the following
TLS record until the asynchronous notification with the resync request
TCP sequence arrives.
A following series for mlx5e ConnectX-6DX TLS RX offload support will
use this mechanism.

sk_msg and ULP frameworks override protocol callbacks pointer in
sk->sk_prot, while tcp accesses it locklessly when cloning the listening
socket, that is with neither sk_lock nor sk_callback_lock held.
Once we enable use of listening sockets with sockmap (and hence sk_msg),
there will be shared access to sk->sk_prot if socket is getting cloned
while being inserted/deleted to/from the sockmap from another CPU:
Read side:

Current code doesn't check if tcp sequence number is starting from (/after)
1st record's start sequnce number. It only checks if seq number is before
1st record's end sequnce number. This problem will always be a possibility
in re-transmit case. If a record which belongs to a requested seq number is
already deleted, tls_get_record will start looking into list and as per the
check it will look if seq number is before the end seq of 1st record, which
will always be true and will return 1st record always, it should in fact
return NULL.
As part of the fix, start looking each record only if the sequence number
lies in the list else return NULL.
There is one more check added, driver look for the start marker record to
handle tcp packets which are before the tls offload start sequence number,
hence return 1st record if the record is tls start marker and seq number is
before the 1st record's starting sequence number.

When user returns SK_DROP we need to reset the number of copied bytes
to indicate to the user the bytes were dropped and not sent. If we
don't reset the copied arg sendmsg will return as if those bytes were
copied giving the user a positive return value.
This works as expected today except in the case where the user also
pops bytes. In the pop case the sg.size is reduced but we don't correctly
account for this when copied bytes is reset. The popped bytes are not
accounted for and we return a small positive value potentially confusing
the user.
The reason this happens is due to a typo where we do the wrong comparison
when accounting for pop bytes. In this fix notice the if/else is not
needed and that we have a similar problem if we push data except its not
visible to the user because if delta is larger the sg.size we return a
negative value so it appears as an error regardless.

Its possible through a set of push, pop, apply helper calls to construct
a skmsg, which is just a ring of scatterlist elements, with the start
value larger than the end value. For example,
end start
|_0_|_1_| ... |_n_|_n+1_|
Where end points at 1 and start points and n so that valid elements is
the set {n, n+1, 0, 1}.
Currently, because we don't build the correct chain only {n, n+1} will
be sent. This adds a check and sg_chain call to correctly submit the
above to the crypto and tls send path.

It is possible to build a plaintext buffer using push helper that is larger
than the allocated encrypt buffer. When this record is pushed to crypto
layers this can result in a NULL pointer dereference because the crypto
API expects the encrypt buffer is large enough to fit the plaintext
buffer. Kernel splat below.
To resolve catch the cases this can happen and split the buffer into two
records to send individually. Unfortunately, there is still one case to
handle where the split creates a zero sized buffer. In this case we merge
the buffers and unmark the split. This happens when apply is zero and user
pushed data beyond encrypt buffer. This fixes the original case as well
because the split allocated an encrypt buffer larger than the plaintext
buffer and the merge simply moves the pointers around so we now have
a reference to the new (larger) encrypt buffer.
Perhaps its not ideal but it seems the best solution for a fixes branch
and avoids handling these two cases, (a) apply that needs split and (b)
non apply case. The are edge cases anyways so optimizing them seems not
necessary unless someone wants later in next branches.

When sockmap sock with TLS enabled is removed we cleanup bpf/psock state
and call tcp_update_ulp() to push updates to TLS ULP on top. However, we
don't push the write_space callback up and instead simply overwrite the
op with the psock stored previous op. This may or may not be correct so
to ensure we don't overwrite the TLS write space hook pass this field to
the ULP and have it fixup the ctx.
This completes a previous fix that pushed the ops through to the ULP
but at the time missed doing this for write_space, presumably because
write_space TLS hook was added around the same time.

TLS TX needs to release and re-acquire the socket lock if send buffer
fills up.
TLS SW TX path currently depends on only allowing one thread to enter
the function by the abuse of sk_write_pending. If another writer is
already waiting for memory no new ones are allowed in.
This has two problems:
- writers don't wake other threads up when they leave the kernel;
meaning that this scheme works for single extra thread (second
application thread or delayed work) because memory becoming
available will send a wake up request, but as Mallesham and
Pooja report with larger number of threads it leads to threads
being put to sleep indefinitely;
- the delayed work does not get _scheduled_ but it may _run_ when
other writers are present leading to crashes as writers don't
expect state to change under their feet (same records get pushed
and freed multiple times); it's hard to reliably bail from the
work, however, because the mere presence of a writer does not
guarantee that the writer will push pending records before exiting.
Ensuring wakeups always happen will make the code basically open
code a mutex. Just use a mutex.
The TLS HW TX path does not have any locking (not even the
sk_write_pending hack), yet it uses a per-socket sg_tx_data
array to push records.

For TLS device offload the tag/message authentication code are
filled in by the device. The kernel merely reserves space for
them. Because device overwrites it, the contents of the tag make
do no matter. Current code tries to save space by reusing the
header as the tag. This, however, leads to an additional frag
being created and defeats buffer coalescing (which trickles
all the way down to the drivers).
Remove this optimization, and try to allocate the space for
the tag in the usual way, leave the memory uninitialized.
If memory allocation fails rewind the record pointer so that
we use the already copied user data as tag.
Note that the optimization was actually buggy, as the tag
for TLS 1.2 is 16 bytes, but header is just 13, so the reuse
may had looked past the end of the page..

sk_validate_xmit_skb() and drivers depend on the sk member of
struct sk_buff to identify segments requiring encryption.
Any operation which removes or does not preserve the original TLS
socket such as skb_orphan() or skb_clone() will cause clear text
leaks.
Make the TCP socket underlying an offloaded TLS connection
mark all skbs as decrypted, if TLS TX is in offload mode.
Then in sk_validate_xmit_skb() catch skbs which have no socket
(or a socket with no validation) and decrypted flag set.
Note that CONFIG_SOCK_VALIDATE_XMIT, CONFIG_TLS_DEVICE and
sk->sk_validate_xmit_skb are slightly interchangeable right now,
they all imply TLS offload. The new checks are guarded by
CONFIG_TLS_DEVICE because that's the option guarding the
sk_buff->decrypted member.
Second, smaller issue with orphaning is that it breaks
the guarantee that packets will be delivered to device
queues in-order. All TLS offload drivers depend on that
scheduling property. This means skb_orphan_partial()'s
trick of preserving partial socket references will cause
issues in the drivers. We need a full orphan, and as a
result netem delay/throttling will cause all TLS offload
skbs to be dropped.
Reusing the sk_buff->decrypted flag also protects from
leaking clear text when incoming, decrypted skb is redirected
(e.g. by TC).
See commit 0608c69c9a ("bpf: sk_msg, sock{map|hash} redirect
through ULP") for justification why the internal flag is safe.
The only location which could leak the flag in is tcp_bpf_sendmsg(),
which is taken care of by clearing the previously unused bit.
v2:
- remove superfluous decrypted mark copy (Willem);
- remove the stale doc entry (Boris);
- rely entirely on EOR marking to prevent coalescing (Boris);
- use an internal sendpages flag instead of marking the socket
(Boris).
v3 (Willem):
- reorganize the can_skb_orphan_partial() condition;
- fix the flag leak-in through tcp_bpf_sendmsg.

When a map free is called and in parallel a socket is closed we
have two paths that can potentially reset the socket prot ops, the
bpf close() path and the map free path. This creates a problem
with which prot ops should be used from the socket closed side.
If the map_free side completes first then we want to call the
original lowest level ops. However, if the tls path runs first
we want to call the sockmap ops. Additionally there was no locking
around prot updates in TLS code paths so the prot ops could
be changed multiple times once from TLS path and again from sockmap
side potentially leaving ops pointed at either TLS or sockmap
when psock and/or tls context have already been destroyed.
To fix this race first only update ops inside callback lock
so that TLS, sockmap and lowest level all agree on prot state.
Second and a ULP callback update() so that lower layers can
inform the upper layer when they are being removed allowing the
upper layer to reset prot ops.
This gets us close to allowing sockmap and tls to be stacked
in arbitrary order but will save that patch for *next trees.
v4:
- make sure we don't free things for device;
- remove the checks which swap the callbacks back
only if TLS is at the top.

It is possible (via shutdown()) for TCP socks to go through TCP_CLOSE
state via tcp_disconnect() without actually calling tcp_close which
would then call the tls close callback. Because of this a user could
disconnect a socket then put it in a LISTEN state which would break
our assumptions about sockets always being ESTABLISHED state.
More directly because close() can call unhash() and unhash is
implemented by sockmap if a sockmap socket has TLS enabled we can
incorrectly destroy the psock from unhash() and then call its close
handler again. But because the psock (sockmap socket representation)
is already destroyed we call close handler in sk->prot. However,
in some cases (TLS BASE/BASE case) this will still point at the
sockmap close handler resulting in a circular call and crash reported
by syzbot.
To fix both above issues implement the unhash() routine for TLS.
v4:
- add note about tls offload still needing the fix;
- move sk_proto to the cold cache line;
- split TX context free into "release" and "free",
otherwise the GC work itself is in already freed
memory;
- more TX before RX for consistency;
- reuse tls_ctx_free();
- schedule the GC work after we're done with context
to avoid UAF;
- don't set the unhash in all modes, all modes "inherit"
TLS_BASE's callbacks anyway;
- disable the unhash hook for TLS_HW.

By restructuring the code we can avoid droping lock and then
reclaiming it. To simplify this we do the following,
tls_sk_proto_close
set_bit(CLOSING)
set_bit(SCHEDULE)
cancel_delay_work_sync() <- cancel workqueue
lock_sock(sk)
...
release_sock(sk)
strp_done()
Setting the CLOSING bit prevents the SCHEDULE bit from being
cleared by any workqueue items e.g. if one happens to be

work. Then because SCHEDULE bit is set now no new work will
be scheduled.
