The buffer is used to save register mapping in a sample. Normally
perf samples don't have any register so the string should be empty.
But it missed to initialize the buffer when the size is 0. And it's
passed to PyUnicode_FromString() with a garbage data.
So it returns NULL due to invalid input (instead of an empty unicode
string object) which causes a segfault like below:
Thread 2.1 "perf" received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Pthread keys are more portable than __thread and allow the association
of a destructor with the key. Use the destructor to clean up TLS
callchain cursors to aid understanding memory leaks.
Committer notes:
Had to fixup a series of unconverted places and also check for the
return of get_tls_callchain_cursor() as it may fail and return NULL.
In that unlikely case we now either print something to a file, if the
caller was expecting to print a callchain, or return an error code to
state that resolving the callchain isn't possible.
In some cases this was made easier because thread__resolve_callchain()
already can fail for other reasons, so this new one (cursor == NULL) can
be added and the callers don't have to explicitely check for this new
condition.

struct addr_location holds references to multiple reference counted
objects. Add init/exit functions to make maintenance of those more
consistent with the rest of the code and to try to avoid
leaks. Modification of thread reference counts isn't included in this
change.
Committer notes:
I needed to initialize result to sample->ip to make sure is set to
something, fixing a compile time error, mostly keeping the previous
logic as build_alloc_func_list() already does debugging/error prints
about what went wrong if it takes the 'goto out'.

Using accessors will make it easier to add reference count checking in
later patches.
Committer notes:
thread->nsinfo wasn't wrapped as it is used together with
nsinfo__zput(), where does a trick to set the field with a refcount
being dropped to NULL, and that doesn't work well with using
thread__nsinfo(thread), that loses the &thread->nsinfo pointer.
When refcount checking is added to 'struct thread', later in this
series, nsinfo__zput(RC_CHK_ACCESS(thread)->nsinfo) will be used to
check the thread pointer.

Later changes will add reference count checking for struct map, with
dso being the most frequently accessed variable. Add an accessor so
that the reference count check is only necessary in one place.
Additional changes:
- add a dso variable to avoid repeated map__dso calls.
- in builtin-mem.c dump_raw_samples, code only partially tested for
dso == NULL. Make the possibility of NULL consistent.
- in thread.c thread__memcpy fix use of spaces and use tabs.

Introduce functions to access struct maps. These functions reduce the
number of places reference counting is necessary. While tidying APIs do
some small const-ification, in particlar to unwind_libunwind_ops.

The build was failing on archlinux because it has a newer libtraceevent
that added a new entry to the tep_print_arg_type enum:
19.72 archlinux:base : FAIL gcc version 12.2.0 (GCC)

are available, just disable -Werror=switch-enum for that specific
object.

Remove the LIBTRACEEVENT_DYNAMIC and LIBTRACEFS_DYNAMIC make command
line variables.
If libtraceevent isn't installed or NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 is passed to the
build, don't compile in libtraceevent and libtracefs support.
This also disables CONFIG_TRACE that controls "perf trace".
CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT is used to control enablement in Build/Makefiles,
HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is used in C code.
Without HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT tracepoints are disabled and as such the
commands kmem, kwork, lock, sched and timechart are removed. The
majority of commands continue to work including "perf test".
Committer notes:
Fixed up a tools/perf/util/Build reject and added:
#include <traceevent/event-parse.h>
to tools/perf/util/scripting-engines/trace-event-perl.c.

Had to tweak tools/perf/util/setup.py to make sure the python binding
shared object links with libtraceevent if -DHAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is
present in CFLAGS.
Building with NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 uncovered some more build failures:
- Make building of data-convert-bt.c to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y
- perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += scripts/
- bpf_kwork.o needs also to be dependent on CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y
- The python binding needed some fixups and util/trace-event.c can't be
built and linked with the python binding shared object, so remove it
in tools/perf/util/setup.py and exclude it from the list of
dependencies in the python/perf.so Makefile.perf target.
Building without libtraceevent-devel installed uncovered more build
failures:
- The python binding tools/perf/util/python.c was assuming that
traceevent/parse-events.h was always available, which was the case
when we defaulted to using the in-kernel tools/lib/traceevent/ files,
now we need to enclose it under ifdef HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT, just like
the other parts of it that deal with tracepoints.
- We have to ifdef the rules in the Build files with
CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT=y to build builtin-trace.c and
tools/perf/trace/beauty/ as we only ifdef setting CONFIG_TRACE=y when
setting NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1 in the make command line, not when we don't
detect libtraceevent-devel installed in the system. Simplification here
to avoid these two ways of disabling builtin-trace.c and not having
CONFIG_TRACE=y when libtraceevent-devel isn't installed is the clean
way.
From Athira:
<quote>
tools/perf/arch/powerpc/util/Build
-perf-y += kvm-stat.o
+perf-$(CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT) += kvm-stat.o
</quote>
Then, ditto for arm64 and s390, detected by container cross build tests.
- s/390 uses test__checkevent_tracepoint() that is now only available if
HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT is defined, enclose the callsite with ifder HAVE_LIBTRACEEVENT.
Also from Athira:
<quote>
With this change, I could successfully compile in these environment:
- Without libtraceevent-devel installed
- With libtraceevent-devel installed
- With “make NO_LIBTRACEEVENT=1”
</quote>
Then, finally rename CONFIG_TRACEEVENT to CONFIG_LIBTRACEEVENT for
consistency with other libraries detected in tools/perf/.

Use the dedicated non-atomic helpers for {clear,set}_bit() and their
test variants, i.e. the double-underscore versions. Depsite being
defined in atomic.h, and despite the kernel versions being atomic in the
kernel, tools' {clear,set}_bit() helpers aren't actually atomic. Move
to the double-underscore versions so that the versions that are expected
to be atomic (for kernel developers) can be made atomic without
affecting users that don't want atomic operations.
No functional change intended.

Add a logic to aggregate counter values to the new evsel->stats->aggr.
This is not used yet so shadow stats are not updated. But later patch
will convert the existing code to use it.
With that, we don't need to handle AGGR_GLOBAL specially anymore. It
can use the same logic with counts, prev_counts and aggr_counts.

The recent kernel added lost count can be read from either read(2) or
ring buffer data with PERF_SAMPLE_READ. As it's a variable length data
we need to access it according to the format info.
But for perf tools use cases, PERF_FORMAT_ID is always set. So we can
only check PERF_FORMAT_LOST bit to determine the data format.
Add sample_read_value_size() and next_sample_read_value() helpers to
make it a bit easier to access. Use them in all places where it reads
the struct sample_read_value.

Add machine_pid and vcpu to struct perf_record_auxtrace_error. The existing
fmt member is used to identify the new format.
The new members make it possible to easily differentiate errors from guest

This change adds dso build_id and corresponding map's start and end
address. The info of dso build_id can be used to find dso file path,
and we can validate if a branch address falls into the range of map's
start and end addresses.
In addition, the map's start address can be used as an offset for
disassembly.

This change adds the symbol offset to the data exported for each
call-chain entry. This can not be calculated from the script and
only the ip value, and no related mmap information.
In addition, also export the source file and line information, if
available, to avoid an external lookup if this information is needed.

A common problem is confusing CPU map indices with the CPU, by wrapping
the CPU with a struct then this is avoided. This approach is similar to
atomic_t.
Committer notes:
To make it build with BUILD_BPF_SKEL=1 these files needed the
conversions to 'struct perf_cpu' usage:
tools/perf/util/bpf_counter.c
tools/perf/util/bpf_counter_cgroup.c
tools/perf/util/bpf_ftrace.c
Also perf_env__get_cpu() was removed back in "perf cpumap: Switch
cpu_map__build_map to cpu function".
Additionally these needed to be fixed for the ARM builds to complete:
tools/perf/arch/arm/util/cs-etm.c
tools/perf/arch/arm64/util/pmu.c

Add new '__rel_loc' dynamic data location attribute support.
This type attribute is similar to the '__data_loc' but records the
offset from the field itself.
The libtraceevent adds TEP_FIELD_IS_RELATIVE to the
'tep_format_field::flags' with TEP_FIELD_IS_DYNAMIC for'__rel_loc'.

perf_events may sometimes throttle an event due to creating too many
samples during a given timer tick.
As of now, the perf tool will not report on throttling, which means this
is a silent error.
Implement a callback for the throttle and unthrottle events within the
Python scripting engine, which can allow scripts to detect and report
when events may have been lost due to throttling.
The simplest script to report throttle events is:
def throttle(*args):
print("throttle" + repr(args))
def unthrottle(*args):
print("unthrottle" + repr(args))

Commit 48a1f56526 ("perf script python: Add more PMU fields to
event handler dict") added functionality to report fields like weight,
iregs, uregs etc via perf report. That commit predefined buffer size to
512 bytes to print those fields.
But in PowerPC, since we added extended regs support in:
068aeea377 ("perf powerpc: Support exposing Performance Monitor Counter SPRs as part of extended regs")
d735599a06 ("powerpc/perf: Add extended regs support for power10 platform")
Now iregs can carry more bytes of data and this predefined buffer size
can result to data loss in perf script output.
This patch resolves this issue by making the buffer size dynamic, based
on the number of registers needed to print. It also changes the
regs_map() return type from int to void, as it is not being used by the
set_regs_in_dict(), its only caller.
