Here is the big staging tree pull request for the 3.5-rc1 merge window.
Loads of changes here, and we just narrowly added more lines than we
added:
622 files changed, 28356 insertions(+), 26059 deletions(-)
But, good news is that there is a number of subsystems that moved out of
the staging tree, to their respective "real" portions of the kernel.
Code that moved out was:
- iio core code
- mei driver
- vme core and bridge drivers
There was one broken network driver that moved into staging as a step
before it is removed from the tree (pc300), and there was a few new
drivers added to the tree:
- new iio drivers
- gdm72xx wimax USB driver
- ipack subsystem and 2 drivers
All of the movements around have acks from the various subsystem
maintainers, and all of this has been in the linux-next tree for a
while.

Here is the big USB 3.5-rc1 pull request for the 3.5-rc1 merge window.
It's touches a lot of different parts of the kernel, all USB drivers,
due to some API cleanups (getting rid of the ancient err() macro) and
some changes that are needed for USB 3.0 power management updates.
There are also lots of new drivers, pimarily gadget, but others as well.
We deleted a staging driver, which was nice, and finally dropped the
obsolete usbfs code, which will make Al happy to never have to touch
that again.
There were some build errors in the tree that linux-next found a few
days ago, but those were fixed by the most recent changes (all were due
to us not building with CONFIG_PM disabled.)

1. Change the return type from int to void
All the detach functions, except for the comedi usb drivers, simply
return success (0). Plus, the return code is never checked in the
comedi core.
The comedi usb drivers do return error codes but the conditions can
never happen.
The first check is:
if (!dev)
return -EFAULT;
This checks that the passed comedi_device pointer is valid. The detach
function itself is called using this pointer so it MUST always be valid
or there is a bug in the core:
if (dev->driver)
dev->driver->detach(dev);
And the second check:
usb = dev->private;
if (!usb)
return -EFAULT;
The dev->private pointer is setup in the attach function to point to the
probed usb device. This value could be NULL if the attach fails. But,
since the comedi core is going to unload the driver anyway and does not
check for errors there is no gain by returning one.
After removing these checks from the comedi usb drivers the detach
functions required a bit of cleanup.
2. Remove all the printk noise in the detach functions
All of the printk output is really just noise. The user did a rmmod to
unload the driver, we really don't need to tell them about it.
Also, some of the messages are output using:
dev_dbg(dev->hw_dev, ...
or
dev_info(dev->hw_dev, ...
Unfortunately the hw_dev value is only used by drivers that are doing
DMA. For most drivers this variable is going to be NULL so the output
is not going to work as expected.
3. Refactor a couple static 'free_resource' functions into the detach
functions.
The 'free_resource' function is only being called by the detach and it
makes more sense to just absorb the code.
4. Remove a couple unnecessary braces for single statements.
5. Remove unnecessary comments.
Most of the comedi drivers appear to be based on the comedi skel driver
and have the comments from that driver included. These comments make
sense in the skel driver for reference but they don't need to be in any
of the actual drivers.
6. Remove all the extra whitespace.
It's not needed to make the functions any more readable.
7. Remove the now unused 'attached_successfully' variable in the
cb_pcimdda driver.
This variable was only used to conditionally output some driver noise
during the detach. Since all the printk's have been removed this
variable is no longer necessary.

This adds support to re-import omapdrm's own buffers. Importing buffers
allocated by other drivers can be added later, but for now is not needed
(we don't yet have any other exportering drivers to test with).

Add support for mmap'ing buffers via dmabuf. For handling mmap of
cached buffers correctly, fault handling and PTE shootdown are used
to track dirty pages and automagically handle cache flushes before
dma access to the buffer.

This is a first step for adding ECC support for pstore RAM backend: we
will use the persistent_ram routines, kindly provided by Google.
Basically, persistent_ram is a set of helper routines to deal with the
[optionally] ECC-protected persistent ram regions.
A bit of Makefile, Kconfig and header files adjustments were needed
because of the move.

Introduce the module_comedi_usb_driver macro, and the
associated register/unregister functions, which is a
convenience macro for comedi usb driver modules similar
to module_platform_driver. It is intended to be used by
drivers where the init/exit section does nothing but
register/unregister the comedi driver and associated usb
driver. By using this macro it is possible to eliminate
a few lines of boilerplate code per comedi usb driver.
Also, when registering the usb driver check for failure
and unregister the comedi driver.

for the forward declarations.
Refactor some of the other functions to remove the remaining
forward declarations.
Convert the driver to use the module_comedi_driver() macro

Use Kconfig logic instead of a rude #error in the driver source,
which breaks m68k-allmodconfig.

This is a transition patch to keep things bisectable, just moves
some routines under '#ifndef MODULE'. The code inside the #ifndef
will go away soon, but so far we must support pstore and ram_console.
So, we are about to use persistent_ram with pstore, with the ability
to compile persistent_ram routines as modules. Some parts of
persistent_ram uses memblock_reserve() routine, which is should be
only used built-in code, and thus it is not exported.
These persistent_ram bits are only used by Android's ram_console,
which is always built-in.
Without this patch, we won't able to compile persistent_ram as a
module:
ERROR: "memblock_reserve" [fs/pstore/ramoops.ko] undefined!
make[1]: *** [__modpost] Error 1
make: *** [modules] Error 2
(As alternative, we could export memblock_reserve, but the thing
is: we won't need it later.)

Add FunctionFS support.
It allows certain USB functions to be provided from userspace, e.g. MTP,
PTP, adb.
The functions provided by the gadget itself are enumerated in
/sys/class/ccg0/functions. The functions which can be supplied
from userspace must be enumerated in /sys/class/ccg0/f_fs/user_functions.
No other userspace functions can be used than specified in the above mentioned
file, but just specifying them there is not enough to activate them.
The userspace functions in order to be activated need also be enumerated
in /sys/class/ccg0/functions.
An example sequence of operations can be as follows:

$ echo -n 0x2d01 > /sys/module/g_ccg/parameters/idProduct
$ echo -n MyDevice > /sys/module/g_ccg/parameters/iSerialNumber

The above example declares that adb, mtp and ptp functions can be supplied
from userspace through FunctionFS. But of them all only ptp is actually
activated, together with mass_storage, the latter being implemented in
the gadget itself (in kernel, not in userspace). The list of functions
can be modified at runtime while the gadget is not enabled, that is,
after
$ echo 0 > /sys/class/ccg_usb/ccg0/enable
The FunctionFS function is implicitly handled by the gadget, that is,
if a userspace function name is provided in
/sys/class/ccg_usb/ccg0/functions, then the FunctionFS function
is activated.

The Configurable Gadget driver is a composite driver that allows
userspace to change at runtime the list of functions enabled in
its configuration and to configure these functions. It supports
multiple functions: acm, rndis, and mass storage.
It is usually controlled by a daemon that changes the configuration
based on user settings. For example, rndis is enabled when the user
enables sharing the phone data connection.
As an example on how to use it, the following shell commands will
make the gadget disconnect from the host and make it be re-enumerated
as a composite with 1 rndis and 2 acm interfaces, and a different
product id:
echo 0 > /sys/class/ccg_usb/ccg0/enable
echo rndis,acm > /sys/class/ccg_usb/ccg0/functions
echo 2 > /sys/class/ccg_usb/ccg0/f_acm/instances
echo -n 0x2d01 > /sys/module/g_ccg/parameters/idProduct
echo 1 > /sys/class/ccg_usb/ccg0/enable
The driver requires a gadget controller that supports software
control of the D+ pullup and the controller driver must support
disabling the pullup during composite_bind.

removes the need for the forward declarations.
Convert the driver to use the module_comedi_pci_driver() macro
which makes the code smaller and a bit simpler.
