We capture a NULL pointer issue when resizing a corrupt ext4 image which
is freshly clear resize_inode feature (not run e2fsck). It could be
simply reproduced by following steps. The problem is because of the
resize_inode feature was cleared, and it will convert the filesystem to
meta_bg mode in ext4_resize_fs(), but the es->s_reserved_gdt_blocks was
not reduced to zero, so could we mistakenly call reserve_backup_gdb()
and passing an uninitialized resize_inode to it when adding new group
descriptors.

The fix is simple, add a check in ext4_resize_begin() to make sure that
the es->s_reserved_gdt_blocks is zero when the resize_inode feature is

The size must be smaller than or equal to EXT4_BLOCKS_PER_GROUP.
Therefore, "start + size <= ac->ac_o_ex.fe_logical" may occur
when the size is truncated. So start should be the start position of
the group where ac_o_ex.fe_logical is located after alignment.
In addition, when the value of fe_logical or EXT4_BLOCKS_PER_GROUP
is very large, the value calculated by start_off is more accurate.

If the file system does not use bigalloc, calculating the overhead is
cheap, so force the recalculation of the overhead so we don't have to
trust the precalculated overhead in the superblock.

The kernel calculation was underestimating the overhead by not taking
into account the reserved gdt blocks. With this change, the overhead
calculated by the kernel matches the overhead calculation in mke2fs.

Syzbot found an issue [1] in ext4_fallocate().
The C reproducer [2] calls fallocate(), passing size 0xffeffeff000ul,
and offset 0x1000000ul, which, when added together exceed the
bitmap_maxbytes for the inode. This triggers a BUG in
ext4_ind_remove_space(). According to the comments in this function
the 'end' parameter needs to be one block after the last block to be
removed. In the case when the BUG is triggered it points to the last
block. Modify the ext4_punch_hole() function and add constraint that
caps the length to satisfy the one before laster block requirement.

[un]pin_user_pages_remote is dirtying pages without properly warning
the file system in advance. A related race was noted by Jan Kara in
2018[1]; however, more recently instead of it being a very hard-to-hit
race, it could be reliably triggered by process_vm_writev(2) which was
discovered by Syzbot[2].
This is technically a bug in mm/gup.c, but arguably ext4 is fragile in
that if some other kernel subsystem dirty pages without properly
notifying the file system using page_mkwrite(), ext4 will BUG, while
other file systems will not BUG (although data will still be lost).
So instead of crashing with a BUG, issue a warning (since there may be
potential data loss) and just mark the page as clean to avoid
unprivileged denial of service attacks until the problem can be
properly fixed. More discussion and background can be found in the

We probably want to remove the indirect block to extents migration
feature after a deprecation window, but until then, let's fix a
potential data loss problem caused by the fact that we put the
tmp_inode on the orphan list. In the unlikely case where we crash and
do a journal recovery, the data blocks belonging to the inode being
migrated are also represented in the tmp_inode on the orphan list ---
and so its data blocks will get marked unallocated, and available for
reuse.
Instead, stop putting the tmp_inode on the oprhan list. So in the
case where we crash while migrating the inode, we'll leak an inode,
which is not a disaster. It will be easily fixed the next time we run
fsck, and it's better than potentially having blocks getting claimed
by two different files, and losing data as a result.

When migrating to extents, the temporary inode will have it's own checksum
seed. This means that, when swapping the inodes data, the inode checksums
will be incorrect.
This can be fixed by recalculating the extents checksums again. Or simply
by copying the seed into the temporary inode.

A user reported FITRIM ioctl failing for him on ext4 on some devices
without apparent reason. After some debugging we've found out that
these devices (being LVM volumes) report rather large discard
granularity of 42MB and the filesystem had 1k blocksize and thus group
size of 8MB. Because ext4 FITRIM implementation puts discard
granularity into minlen, ext4_trim_fs() declared the trim request as
invalid. However just silently doing nothing seems to be a more
appropriate reaction to such combination of parameters since user did
not specify anything wrong.

When ext4_htree_fill_tree() fails, ext4_dx_readdir() can run into an
infinite loop since if info->last_pos != ctx->pos this will reset the
directory scan and reread the failing entry. For example:
1. a dx_dir which has 3 block, block 0 as dx_root block, block 1/2 as
leaf block which own the ext4_dir_entry_2
2. block 1 read ok and call_filldir which will fill the dirent and update
the ctx->pos
3. block 2 read fail, but we has already fill some dirent, so we will
return back to userspace will a positive return val(see ksys_getdents64)
4. the second ext4_dx_readdir will reset the world since info->last_pos
!= ctx->pos, and will also init the curr_hash which pos to block 1
5. So we will read block1 too, and once block2 still read fail, we can
only fill one dirent because the hash of the entry in block1(besides
the last one) won't greater than curr_hash
6. this time, we forget update last_pos too since the read for block2
will fail, and since we has got the one entry, ksys_getdents64 can
return success
7. Latter we will trapped in a loop with step 4~6

The location of the system.data extended attribute can change whenever
xattr_sem is not taken. So we need to recalculate the i_inline_off
field since it mgiht have changed between ext4_write_begin() and
ext4_write_end().
This means that caching i_inline_off is probably not helpful, so in
the long run we should probably get rid of it and shrink the in-memory
ext4 inode slightly, but let's fix the race the simple way for now.

Commit <50122847007> ("ext4: fix check to prevent initializing reserved
inodes") check the block group zero and prevent initializing reserved
inodes. But in some special cases, the reserved inode may not all belong
to the group zero, it may exist into the second group if we format
filesystem below.
mkfs.ext4 -b 4096 -g 8192 -N 1024 -I 4096 /dev/sda
So, it will end up triggering a false positive report of a corrupted
file system. This patch fix it by avoid check reserved inodes if no free
inode blocks will be zeroed.

The backport of upstream patch 5dccdc5a1916 ("ext4: do not iput inode
under running transaction in ext4_rename()") introduced a regression on
the stable kernels 4.14 and older. One of the end_rename error label was
forgetting to change to release_bh, which may trigger below bug.

In ext4_rename(), when RENAME_WHITEOUT failed to add new entry into
directory, it ends up dropping new created whiteout inode under the
running transaction. After commit <9b88f9fb0d2> ("ext4: Do not iput inode
under running transaction"), we follow the assumptions that evict() does
not get called from a transaction context but in ext4_rename() it breaks
this suggestion. Although it's not a real problem, better to obey it, so
this patch add inode to orphan list and stop transaction before final
iput().

If we failed to add new entry on rename whiteout, we cannot reset the
old->de entry directly, because the old->de could have moved from under
us during make indexed dir. So find the old entry again before reset is
needed, otherwise it may corrupt the filesystem as below.

Currently, system zones just track ranges of block, that are "important"
fs metadata (bitmaps, group descriptors, journal blocks, etc.). This
however complicates how extent tree (or indirect blocks) can be checked
for inodes that actually track such metadata - currently the journal
inode but arguably we should be treating quota files or resize inode
similarly. We cannot run __ext4_ext_check() on such metadata inodes when
loading their extents as that would immediately trigger the validity
checks and so we just hack around that and special-case the journal
inode. This however leads to a situation that a journal inode which has
extent tree of depth at least one can have invalid extent tree that gets
unnoticed until ext4_cache_extents() crashes.
To overcome this limitation, track inode number each system zone belongs
to (0 is used for zones not belonging to any inode). We can then verify
inode number matches the expected one when verifying extent tree and
thus avoid the false errors. With this there's no need to to
special-case journal inode during extent tree checking anymore so remove
it.

Currently, add_system_zone() just silently merges two added system zones
that overlap. However the overlap should not happen and it generally
suggests that some unrelated metadata overlap which indicates the fs is
corrupted. We should have caught such problems earlier (e.g. in
ext4_check_descriptors()) but add this check as another line of defense.
In later patch we also use this for stricter checking of journal inode
extent tree.

superblock checksum so it will not match until the next superblock
modification which recomputes the checksum. Fix it.

We got a "deleted inode referenced" warning cross our fsstress test. The
bug can be reproduced easily with following steps:

ext4_rename will create a special inode for whiteout and use this 'ino'
to replace the source file's dir entry 'ino'. Once error happens
latter(the error above was the ENOSPC return from ext4_add_entry in
ext4_rename since all space has been consumed), the cleanup do drop the
nlink for whiteout, but forget to restore 'ino' with source file. This
will trigger the bug describle as above.

When freeing metadata, we will create an ext4_free_data and
insert it into the pending free list. After the current
transaction is committed, the object will be freed.
ext4_mb_free_metadata() will check whether the area to be freed
overlaps with the pending free list. If true, return directly. At this
time, ext4_free_data is leaked. Fortunately, the probability of this
problem is small, since it only occurs if the file system is corrupted
such that a block is claimed by more one inode and those inodes are
deleted within a single jbd2 transaction.

The idea of the warning in ext4_update_dx_flag() is that we should warn
when we are clearing EXT4_INODE_INDEX on a filesystem with metadata
checksums enabled since after clearing the flag, checksums for internal
htree nodes will become invalid. So there's no need to warn (or actually
do anything) when EXT4_INODE_INDEX is not set.

The macro MOPT_Q is used to indicates the mount option is related to
quota stuff and is defined to be MOPT_NOSUPPORT when CONFIG_QUOTA is
disabled. Normally the quota options are handled explicitly, so it
didn't matter that the MOPT_STRING flag was missing, even though the
usrjquota and grpjquota mount options take a string argument. It's
important that's present in the !CONFIG_QUOTA case, since without
MOPT_STRING, the mount option matcher will match usrjquota= followed
by an integer, and will otherwise skip the table entry, and so "mount
option not supported" error message is never reported.

When we try to use file already used as a quota file again (for the same
or different quota type), strange things can happen. At the very least
lockdep annotations may be wrong but also inode flags may be wrongly set
/ reset. When the file is used for two quota types at once we can even
corrupt the file and likely crash the kernel. Catch all these cases by
checking whether passed file is already used as quota file and bail
early in that case.
This fixes occasional generic/219 failure due to lockdep complaint.

Multiple bugs were recently fixed in the "set encryption policy" ioctl.
To make it clear that fscrypt_process_policy() and fscrypt_get_policy()
implement ioctls and therefore their implementations must take standard
security and correctness precautions, rename them to
fscrypt_ioctl_set_policy() and fscrypt_ioctl_get_policy(). Make the
latter take in a struct file * to make it consistent with the former.

Currently, trying to rename or link a regular file, directory, or
symlink into an encrypted directory fails with EPERM when the source
file is unencrypted or is encrypted with a different encryption policy,
and is on the same mountpoint. It is correct for the operation to fail,
but the choice of EPERM breaks tools like 'mv' that know to copy rather
than rename if they see EXDEV, but don't know what to do with EPERM.
Our original motivation for EPERM was to encourage users to securely
handle their data. Encrypting files by "moving" them into an encrypted
directory can be insecure because the unencrypted data may remain in
free space on disk, where it can later be recovered by an attacker.
It's much better to encrypt the data from the start, or at least try to
securely delete the source data e.g. using the 'shred' program.
However, the current behavior hasn't been effective at achieving its
goal because users tend to be confused, hack around it, and complain;
see e.g. https://github.com/google/fscrypt/issues/76. And in some cases
it's actually inconsistent or unnecessary. For example, 'mv'-ing files
between differently encrypted directories doesn't work even in cases
where it can be secure, such as when in userspace the same passphrase
protects both directories. Yet, you *can* already 'mv' unencrypted
files into an encrypted directory if the source files are on a different
mountpoint, even though doing so is often insecure.
There are probably better ways to teach users to securely handle their
files. For example, the 'fscrypt' userspace tool could provide a
command that migrates unencrypted files into an encrypted directory,
acting like 'shred' on the source files and providing appropriate
warnings depending on the type of the source filesystem and disk.
Receiving errors on unimportant files might also force some users to
disable encryption, thus making the behavior counterproductive. It's
desirable to make encryption as unobtrusive as possible.
Therefore, change the error code from EPERM to EXDEV so that tools
looking for EXDEV will fall back to a copy.
This, of course, doesn't prevent users from still doing the right things
to securely manage their files. Note that this also matches the
behavior when a file is renamed between two project quota hierarchies;
so there's precedent for using EXDEV for things other than mountpoints.
xfstests generic/398 will require an update with this change.

If a device is hot-removed --- for example, when a physical device is
unplugged from pcie slot or a nbd device's network is shutdown ---
this can result in a BUG_ON() crash in submit_bh_wbc(). This is
because the when the block device dies, the buffer heads will have
their Buffer_Mapped flag get cleared, leading to the crash in
submit_bh_wbc.
We had attempted to work around this problem in commit a17712c8
("ext4: check superblock mapped prior to committing"). Unfortunately,
it's still possible to hit the BUG_ON(!buffer_mapped(bh)) if the
device dies between when the work-around check in ext4_commit_super()
and when submit_bh_wbh() is finally called:

If for any reason a directory passed to do_split() does not have enough
active entries to exceed half the size of the block, we can end up
iterating over all "count" entries without finding a split point.
In this case, count == move, and split will be zero, and we will
attempt a negative index into map[].
Guard against this by detecting this case, and falling back to
split-to-half-of-count instead; in this case we will still have
plenty of space (> half blocksize) in each split block.

ext4_search_dir() and ext4_generic_delete_entry() can be called both for
standard director blocks and for inline directories stored inside inode
or inline xattr space. For the second case we didn't call
ext4_check_dir_entry() with proper constraints that could result in
accepting corrupted directory entry as well as false positive filesystem
errors like:

When ext4 encryption was originally merged, we were encrypting the
user-specified filename in ext4_match(), introducing a lot of additional
complexity into ext4_match() and its callers. This has since been
changed to encrypt the filename earlier, so we can remove the gunk
that's no longer needed. This more or less reverts ext4_search_dir()
and ext4_find_dest_de() to the way they were in the v4.0 kernel.

the read size is not aligned with block size.

I have tested this program on XFS filesystem, XFS does not have
this problem, because XFS use iomap_dio_rw() to do direct I/O
read. And the comparing between read offset and file size is done
in iomap_dio_rw(), the code is as following:

I have tested the fix patch on Ext4, it is up to the mustard of
EINVAL in man2(read) as following:

However Ext4 introduces direct I/O read using iomap infrastructure
on kernel 5.5, the patch is commit <b1b4705d54ab>

then Ext4 will be the same as XFS, they all use iomap_dio_rw() to do direct
I/O read. So this problem does not exist on kernel 5.5 for Ext4.
>From above description, we can see this problem exists on all the kernel
versions between kernel 3.14 and kernel 5.4. It will cause the Applications
to fail to read. For example, when the search service downloads a new full
index file, the search engine is loading the previous index file and is
processing the search request, it can not use buffer io that may squeeze
the previous index file in use from pagecache, so the serch service must
use direct I/O read.
Please apply this patch on these kernel versions, or please use the method
on kernel 5.5 to fix this problem.

Fix the bug when calculating the physical block number of the first
block in the split extent.
This bug will cause xfstests shared/298 failure on ext4 with bigalloc
enabled occasionally. Ext4 error messages indicate that previously freed
blocks are being freed again, and the following fsck will fail due to
the inconsistency of block bitmap and bg descriptor.
The following is an example case:
1. First, Initialize a ext4 filesystem with cluster size '16K', block size
'4K', in which case, one cluster contains four blocks.
2. Create one file (e.g., xxx.img) on this ext4 filesystem. Now the extent
tree of this file is like:

In this case, the whole cluster 39521 is freed mistakenly when freeing
pblock 158084~158086 (i.e., the first three blocks of this cluster),
although pblock 158087 (the last remaining block of this cluster) has
not been freed yet.
The root cause of this isuue is that, the pclu of the partial cluster is
calculated mistakenly in ext4_ext_remove_space(). The correct
partial_cluster.pclu (i.e., the cluster number of the first block in the
next extent, that is, lblock 49597 (pblock 158086)) should be 39521 rather
than 39522.

'igrab(d_inode(dentry->d_parent))' without holding dentry->d_lock is
broken because without d_lock, d_parent can be concurrently changed due
to a rename(). Then if the old directory is immediately deleted, old
d_parent->inode can be NULL. That causes a NULL dereference in igrab().
To fix this, use dget_parent() to safely grab a reference to the parent
dentry, which pins the inode. This also eliminates the need to use
d_find_any_alias() other than for the initial inode, as we no longer
throw away the dentry at each step.
This is an extremely hard race to hit, but it is possible. Adding a
udelay() in between the reads of ->d_parent and its ->d_inode makes it
reproducible on a no-journal filesystem using the following program:

If eh->eh_max is 0, EXT_MAX_EXTENT/INDEX would evaluate to unsigned
(-1) resulting in illegal memory accesses. Although there is no
consistent repro, we see that generic/019 sometimes crashes because of
this bug.
Ran gce-xfstests smoke and verified that there were no regressions.
