[ Upstream commit 197eecb6ecae0b04bd694432f640ff75597fed9c ]
When peeking an event, it has a short path and a long path. The short
path uses the session pointer "one_mmap_addr" to directly fetch the
event; and the long path needs to read out the event header and the
following event data from file and fill into the buffer pointer passed
through the argument "buf".
The issue is in the long path that it copies the event header and event
data into the same destination address which pointer "buf", this means
the event header is overwritten. We are just lucky to run into the
short path in most cases, so we don't hit the issue in the long path.
This patch adds the offset "hdr_sz" to the pointer "buf" when copying
the event data, so that it can reserve the event header which can be
used properly by its caller.

commit 75ea44e356b5de8c817f821c9dd68ae329e82add upstream.
On some hosts, rlim.rlim_max can be returned as RLIM_INFINITY.
By casting it to int, it is interpreted as -1, which will cause get_maxfds
to return 0, causing "Invalid argument" errors in nftw() calls.
Fix this by casting the second argument of min() to rlim_t instead.

commit f56299a9c998e0bfbd4ab07cafe9eb8444512448 upstream.
Deprecation warnings are useful only for the developer, not an end user.
Display warnings only when requested using the python -W option. This
stops the display of warnings like:
tools/perf/scripts/python/exported-sql-viewer.py:5102: DeprecationWarning:
an integer is required (got type PySide2.QtCore.Qt.AlignmentFlag).
Implicit conversion to integers using __int__ is deprecated, and
may be removed in a future version of Python.
err = app.exec_()
Since the warning can be fixed only in PySide2, we must wait for it to
be finally fixed there.

commit c954eb72b31a9dc56c99b450253ec5b121add320 upstream.
The decoder reports the current instruction if it was decoded. In some
cases the current instruction is not decoded, in which case the instruction
bytes length must be set to zero. Ensure that is always done.
Note perf script can anyway get the instruction bytes for any samples where
they are not present.
Also note, that there is a redundant "ptq->insn_len = 0" statement which is
not removed until a subsequent patch in order to make this patch apply
cleanly to stable branches.
Example:
A machne that supports TSX is required. It will have flag "rtm". Kernel
parameter tsx=on may be required.
# for w in `cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep -m1 flags `;do echo $w | grep rtm ; done
rtm
Test program:
#include <stdio.h>
#include <immintrin.h>
int main()
{
int x = 0;
if (_xbegin() == _XBEGIN_STARTED) {
x = 1;
_xabort(1);
} else {
printf("x = %d\n", x);
}
return 0;
}
Compile with -mrtm i.e.
gcc -Wall -Wextra -mrtm xabort.c -o xabort
Record:
perf record -e intel_pt/cyc/u --filter 'filter main @ ./xabort' ./xabort
Before:

When locating the DWARF module for a given address, __find_debuginfo()
requires a 'struct dso' passed via the userdata argument.
However, this field is only set in __report_module() if the module is

dwfl_report_elf().
Set userdata irrespective of how the DWARF module was found, as long as
we found a module.

Since commit 14d3d54052539a1e ("perf session: Try to read pipe data from
file") 'perf inject' has started printing "PERFILE2h" when not processing
pipes.
The commit exposed perf to the possiblity that the input is not a pipe
but the 'repipe' parameter gets used. That causes the printing because
perf inject sets 'repipe' to true always.
The 'repipe' parameter of perf_session__new() is used by 2 functions:
- perf_file_header__read_pipe()
- trace_report()
In both cases, the functions copy data to STDOUT_FILENO when 'repipe' is
true.
Fix by setting 'repipe' to true only if the output is a pipe.

The only requirement of an auxtrace queue is that the buffers are in
time order. That is achieved by making separate queues for separate
perf buffer or AUX area buffer mmaps.
That generally means a separate queue per cpu for per-cpu contexts, and
a separate queue per thread for per-task contexts.
When buffers are added to a queue, perf checks that the buffer cpu and
thread id (tid) match the queue cpu and thread id.
However, generally, that need not be true, and perf will queue buffers
correctly anyway, so the check is not needed.
In addition, the check gets erroneously hit when using sample mode to
trace multiple threads.
Consequently, fix that case by removing the check.

Currently perf stat shows some metrics (like IPC) for defined events.
But when no aggregation mode is used (-A option), it shows incorrect
values since it used a value from a different cpu.
Before:
$ perf stat -aA -e cycles,instructions sleep 1
Performance counter stats for 'system wide':
CPU0 116,057,380 cycles
CPU1 86,084,722 cycles
CPU2 99,423,125 cycles
CPU3 98,272,994 cycles
CPU0 53,369,217 instructions # 0.46 insn per cycle
CPU1 33,378,058 instructions # 0.29 insn per cycle
CPU2 58,150,086 instructions # 0.50 insn per cycle
CPU3 40,029,703 instructions # 0.34 insn per cycle
1.001816971 seconds time elapsed
So the IPC for CPU1 should be 0.38 (= 33,378,058 / 86,084,722)
but it was 0.29 (= 33,378,058 / 116,057,380) and so on.
After:
$ perf stat -aA -e cycles,instructions sleep 1
Performance counter stats for 'system wide':

CPU1 159,026,454 cycles

CPU3 124,144,142 cycles
CPU0 44,396,706 instructions # 0.41 insn per cycle
CPU1 120,195,425 instructions # 0.76 insn per cycle
CPU2 44,763,978 instructions # 0.45 insn per cycle

When execute command "perf lock report", it hits failure and outputs log
as follows:
perf: builtin-lock.c:623: report_lock_release_event: Assertion `!(seq->read_count < 0)' failed.
Aborted
This is an imbalance issue. The locking sequence structure
"lock_seq_stat" contains the reader counter and it is used to check if
the locking sequence is balance or not between acquiring and releasing.
If the tool wrongly frees "lock_seq_stat" when "read_count" isn't zero,
the "read_count" will be reset to zero when allocate a new structure at
the next time; thus it causes the wrong counting for reader and finally
results in imbalance issue.
To fix this issue, if detects "read_count" is not zero (means still have
read user in the locking sequence), goto the "end" tag to skip freeing
structure "lock_seq_stat".

That started breaking when building with PYTHON=python3 and these gcc

Avoid that by ditching that 'initfunc' function pointer with its:
#define Py_EXPORTED_SYMBOL _attribute_ ((visibility ("default")))
#define PyMODINIT_FUNC Py_EXPORTED_SYMBOL PyObject*
And just call PyImport_AppendInittab() at the end of the ifdef python3

Some metrics (such as DRAM_BW_Use) consists of uncore events and
duration_time. For uncore events, counter->core.system_wide is true. But
for duration_time, counter->core.system_wide is false so
target.system_wide is set to false.
Then 'enable_on_exec' is set in perf_event_attr of uncore event. Kernel
will return error when trying to open the uncore event.
This patch skips the duration_time in setup_system_wide then
target.system_wide will be set to true for the evlist of uncore events +
duration_time.

commit 29b4f5f188571c112713c35cc87eefb46efee612 upstream.
Since glibc 2.28 when running 'perf top --stdio', input handling no
longer works, but hitting any key always just prints the "Mapped keys"
help text.
To fix it, call clearerr() in the display_thread() loop to clear any EOF
sticky errors, as instructed in the glibc NEWS file
(https://sourceware.org/git/?p=glibc.git;a=blob;f=NEWS):
* All stdio functions now treat end-of-file as a sticky condition. If you
read from a file until EOF, and then the file is enlarged by another
process, you must call clearerr or another function with the same effect
(e.g. fseek, rewind) before you can read the additional data. This
corrects a longstanding C99 conformance bug. It is most likely to affect
programs that use stdio to read interactive input from a terminal.

[ Upstream commit 8510895bafdbf7c4dd24c22946d925691135c2b2 ]
A big uncore event group is split into multiple small groups which only
include the uncore events from the same PMU. This has been supported in
the commit 3cdc5c2cb924a ("perf parse-events: Handle uncore event
aliases in small groups properly").
If the event's PMU name starts to repeat, it must be a new event.
That can be used to distinguish the leader from other members.
But now it only compares the pointer of pmu_name
(leader->pmu_name == evsel->pmu_name).
If we use "perf stat -M LLC_MISSES.PCIE_WRITE -a" on cascadelakex,
the event list is:
evsel->name evsel->pmu_name
---------------------------------------------------------------
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_4 (as leader)
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_2
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_0
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_5
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_3
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part0 uncore_iio_1
unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part1 uncore_iio_4
......
For the event "unc_iio_data_req_of_cpu.mem_write.part1" with
"uncore_iio_4", it should be the event from PMU "uncore_iio_4".
It's not a new leader for this PMU.
But if we use "(leader->pmu_name == evsel->pmu_name)", the check
would be failed and the event is stored to leaders[] as a new
PMU leader.
So this patch uses strcmp to compare the PMU name between events.

In the absence of any modules, no "modules" map is created, but there
are other executable pages to map, due to eBPF JIT, kprobe or ftrace.
Map them by recognizing that the first "module" symbol is not
necessarily from a module, and adjust the map accordingly.

Joakim reported wrong duration_time value for interval bigger
than 4000 [1].
The problem is in the interval value we pass to update_stats
function, which is typed as 'unsigned int' and overflows when
we get over 2^32 (happens between intervals 4000 and 5000).
Retyping the passed value to unsigned long long.

Make the architecture test directory agree with the code comment.
Committer notes:
This was split from a larger patch.
The code was assuming the developer always worked from tools/perf/, so make sure we
do the test -d having $toolsdir/perf/arch/$arch, to match the intent expressed in the comment,
just above that loop.
