Without gcc, the test will fail.
On cleanup, ignore probe removal errors. Otherwise, in case of an error
adding the probe, the temporary directory is not removed.

The die_get_varname() returns "(unknown_type)" string if it failed to
find a type for the variable. But it had a space before the opening
parenthesis and it made the closing parenthesis cut off due to the
off-by-one in the string length (14).

In elf_read_build_id(), if gnu build_id is found, should return the size of
the actually copied data. If descsz is greater thanBuild_ID_SIZE,
write_buildid data access may occur.

Addresses of two data structure members were determined before
corresponding null pointer checks in the implementation of the function
“sort__sym_from_cmp”.
Thus avoid the risk for undefined behaviour by removing extra
initialisations for the local variables “from_l” and “from_r” (also
because they were already reassigned with the same value behind this
pointer check).
This issue was detected by using the Coccinelle software.

After a standalone CBR (not associated with TSC), update the cycles
reference timestamp and reset the cycle count, so that CYC timestamps
are calculated relative to that point with the new frequency.

On aarch64 CPU related events are not under event_source/devices/cpu/events,
they're under event_source/devices/armv8_pmuv3_0/events on my machine.
Using current auto-complete script will generate below error:
[root@localhost bin]# perf stat -e
ls: cannot access '/sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/events': No such file or directory
Fix this by not testing /sys/bus/event_source/devices/cpu/events on
aarch64 machine.

The LLVM template is first echo-ed into command_out and then
command_out executed. The echo surrounds the template with double
quotes, however, the template itself may contain quotes. This is
generally innocuous but in tools/perf/tests/bpf-script-test-prologue.c
we see:
...
SEC("func=null_lseek file->f_mode offset orig")
...
where the first double quote ends the double quote of the echo, then
the > redirects output into a file called f_mode.
To avoid this inadvertent behavior substitute redirects and similar
characters to be ASCII control codes, then substitute the output in
the echo back again.

Adjust some MADV_XXX constants to be in sync what their values are on
all other platforms. There is currently no reason to have an own
numbering on parisc, but it requires workarounds in many userspace
sources (e.g. glibc, qemu, ...) - which are often forgotten and thus
introduce bugs and different behaviour on parisc.
A wrapper avoids an ABI breakage for existing userspace applications by
translating any old values to the new ones, so this change allows us to
move over all programs to the new ABI over time.

DWARF version 5 standard Sec 2.14 says that
Any debugging information entry representing the declaration of an object,
module, subprogram or type may have DW_AT_decl_file, DW_AT_decl_line and
DW_AT_decl_column attributes, each of whose value is an unsigned integer
constant.
So it should be an unsigned integer data. Also, even though the standard
doesn't clearly say the DW_AT_call_file is signed or unsigned, the
elfutils (eu-readelf) interprets it as unsigned integer data and it is
natural to handle it as unsigned integer data as same as DW_AT_decl_file.
This changes the DW_AT_call_file as unsigned integer data too.

perf doesn't provide proper symbol information for specially crafted
.debug files.
Sometimes .debug file may not have similar program header as runtime
ELF file. For example if we generate .debug file using objcopy
--only-keep-debug resulting file will not contain .text, .data and
other runtime sections. That means corresponding program headers will
have zero FileSiz and modified Offset.
Example: program header of text section of libxxx.so:

On Arm64 a case is perf tools fails to find the corresponding trace
point folder for system calls listed in the table 'syscalltbl_arm64',
e.g. the generated system call table contains "lookup_dcookie" but we
cannot find out the matched trace point folder for it.
We need to figure out if there have any issue for the generated system
call table, on the other hand, we need to handle the case when trace
point folder is missed under sysfs, this patch sets the flag
syscall::nonexistent as true and returns the error from
trace__read_syscall_info().
Another problem is for trace__syscall_info(), it returns two different
values if a system call doesn't exist: at the first time calling
trace__syscall_info() it returns NULL when the system call doesn't exist,
later if call trace__syscall_info() again for the same missed system
call, it returns pointer of syscall. trace__syscall_info() checks the
condition 'syscalls.table[id].name == NULL', but the name will be
assigned in the first invoking even the system call is not found.
So checking system call's name in trace__syscall_info() is not the right
thing to do, this patch simply checks flag syscall::nonexistent to make
decision if a system call exists or not, finally trace__syscall_info()
returns the consistent result (NULL) if a system call doesn't existed.

This will go from a string to a number, so that filter expressions can
be constructed with strings and then, before applying the tracepoint
filters (or eBPF, in the future) we can map those strings to numbers.
The first one will be for 'msr' tracepoint arguments, but real quickly
we will be able to reuse all strarrays for that.

it with a single scnprintf() routine auto-generated from kernel headers,

We set the default scnprint routines for the syscall args based on its
type or on heuristics based on its names, now we'll use this for
tracepoints as well, so move it out of syscall__set_arg_fmts() and into
a routine that receive just an array of syscall_arg_fmt entries + the
tracepoint format fields list.

As this has all the things needed to format tracepoints events, not just
syscalls, that, after all, are just tracepoints with a set in stone ABI,
i.e. order and number of parameters.
For tracepoints we'll create a
static struct syscall_fmt tracepoint_fmts[]
array and will fill the ->arg[] entries with the beautifier for each
positional argument and record the name, then, when we need it, we'll
just check that the position has the same name, maybe even type, so that
we can do some check that the tracepoint hasn't changed, if it has, we
can even reorder things.
Keep calling it syscall_fmt but use it as well for tracepoints, do it
this way to minimize changes and reuse what is in place for syscalls,
we'll see.

When a system call is not detected, the reason is either because the
system call ID is out of scope or failure to find the corresponding path
in the sysfs, trace__read_syscall_info() returns zero. Finally, without
returning an error value it introduces confusion for the caller.
This patch lets the function trace__read_syscall_info() to return
-EEXIST when a system call doesn't exist.

Above result also has an extra CSV separator after
the timestamp. Patch addresses extra field separator
in the beginning of the metric output line.
The counter stats are displayed by function
"perf_stat__print_shadow_stats" in code
"util/stat-shadow.c". While printing the stats info
for "stalled cycles per insn", function "new_line_csv"
is used as new_line callback.
The new_line_csv function has check for "os->prefix"
and if prefix is not null, it will be printed along
with cvs separator.

uClibc segfaulted because NULL was passed as the format to fprintf().
That happened because one of the format strings was missing and
intel_pt_print_info() didn't check that before calling fprintf().
Add the missing format string, and check format is not NULL before calling
fprintf().

/proc/kallsyms and /proc/modules are compared before and after the copy
in order to ensure no changes during the copy.
However /proc/modules also might change due to reference counts changing
even though that does not make any difference.
Any modules loaded or unloaded should be visible in changes to kallsyms,
so it is not necessary to check /proc/modules also anyway.
Remove the comparison checking that /proc/modules is unchanged.

When genelf was introduced it tested for HAVE_LIBCRYPTO not
HAVE_LIBCRYPTO_SUPPORT, which is the define the feature test for openssl
defines, fix it.
This also adds disables the deprecation warning, someone has to fix this
to build with openssl 3.0 before the warning becomes a hard error.

The perf jvmti agent doesn't create program headers, in this case
fallback on section headers as happened previously.

When using 'perf mem' and 'perf c2c', an issue is observed that tool
reports the wrong offset for global data symbols. This is a common
issue on both x86 and Arm64 platforms.
Let's see an example, for a test program, below is the disassembly for
its .bss section which is dumped with objdump:

First we used 'perf mem record' to run the test program and then used
'perf --debug verbose=4 mem report' to observe what's the symbol info
for 'buf1' and 'buf2' structures.

The perf tool relies on libelf to parse symbols, in executable and
shared object files, 'st_value' holds a virtual address; 'sh_addr' is
the address at which section's first byte should reside in memory, and
'sh_offset' is the byte offset from the beginning of the file to the
first byte in the section. The perf tool uses below formula to convert
a symbol's memory address to a file address:
file_address = st_value - sh_addr + sh_offset

We can see the final adjusted address ranges for buf1 and buf2 are
[0x30a8-0x30e8) and [0x3068-0x30a8) respectively, apparently this is
incorrect, in the code, the structure for 'buf1' and 'buf2' specifies
compiler attribute with 64-byte alignment.
The problem happens for 'sh_offset', libelf returns it as 0x3028 which
is not 64-byte aligned, combining with disassembly, it's likely libelf
doesn't respect the alignment for .bss section, therefore, it doesn't
return the aligned value for 'sh_offset'.
Suggested by Fangrui Song, ELF file contains program header which
contains PT_LOAD segments, the fields p_vaddr and p_offset in PT_LOAD
segments contain the execution info. A better choice for converting
memory address to file address is using the formula:
file_address = st_value - p_vaddr + p_offset
This patch introduces elf_read_program_header() which returns the
program header based on the passed 'st_value', then it uses the formula
above to calculate the symbol file address; and the debugging log is
updated respectively.
After applying the change:

The function percent_rmt_hitm_cmp() wrongly uses local HITMs for
sorting remote HITMs.

In the origin code, when "ExtSel" is 1, the eventcode will change to
"eventcode |= 1 << 21”. For event “UNC_Q_RxL_CREDITS_CONSUMED_VN0.DRS",
its "ExtSel" is "1", its eventcode will change from 0x1E to 0x20001E,
but in fact the eventcode should <=0x1FF, so this will cause the parse
fail:
# perf stat -e "UNC_Q_RxL_CREDITS_CONSUMED_VN0.DRS" -a sleep 0.1

On the perf kernel side, the kernel assumes the valid bits are continuous.
It will adjust the 0x100 (bit 8 for perf tool) to bit 21 in HW.

So the perf tool follows the kernel side and just set bit8 other than bit21.

If the slang lib is not installed on the system, perf c2c tool disables TUI
mode and roll back to use stdio mode; but the flag 'c2c.use_stdio' is
missed to set true and thus it wrongly applies UI quirks in the function
ui_quirks().
This commit forces to use stdio interface if slang is not supported, and
it can avoid to apply the UI quirks and show the correct metric header.

Decode Xen and KVM's emulate-prefix signature by x86 insn decoder.
It is called "prefix" but actually not x86 instruction prefix, so
this adds insn.emulate_prefix_size field instead of reusing
insn.prefixes.
If x86 decoder finds a special sequence of instructions of
XEN_EMULATE_PREFIX and 'ud2a; .ascii "kvm"', it just counts the
length, set insn.emulate_prefix_size and fold it with the next
instruction. In other words, the signature and the next instruction
is treated as a single instruction.

These make the feature check fail when using clang, so remove them just
like is done in tools/perf/Makefile.config to build perf itself.

Yes, I think that is probably the best solution. As far as I can tell,
at least in this file and context, the warning appears harmless, as the
"create a GNU C statement expression from two different macros" is very
much intentional, based on the presence of PERL_USE_GCC_BRACE_GROUPS.
The warning is fixed in upstream Perl by just avoiding creating GNU C
statement expressions using STMT_START and STMT_END:

If I am reading the source code correctly, an alternative to disabling
the warning would be specifying -DPERL_GCC_BRACE_GROUPS_FORBIDDEN but it

If a perf event doesn't fit into remaining buffer space return NULL to
remap buf and fetch the event again.
Keep the logic to error out on inadequate input from fuzzing.
This fixes perf failing on ChromeOS (with 32b userspace):

Before this patch, the symbol end address fixup to be called, needed two
conditions being met:

When perf_data__create_dir() fails, it calls close_dir(), but
perf_session__delete() also calls close_dir() and since dir.version and
dir.nr were initialized by perf_data__create_dir(), a double free occurs.
This patch moves the initialization of dir.version and dir.nr after
successful initialization of dir.files, that prevents double freeing.
This behavior is already implemented in perf_data__open_dir().

Because of commit bf794bf52a80c627 ("powerpc/kprobes: Fix kallsyms
lookup across powerpc ABIv1 and ABIv2"), in ppc64 ABIv1, our perf
command eliminates the need to use the prefix "." at the symbol name.
But when the command "perf probe -a schedule" is executed on ppc64
ABIv1, it obtains two symbol address information through /proc/kallsyms,
for example:
cat /proc/kallsyms | grep -w schedule
c000000000657020 T .schedule
c000000000d4fdb8 D schedule
The symbol "D schedule" is not a function symbol, and perf will print:
"p:probe/schedule _text+13958584"Failed to write event: Invalid argument
Therefore, when searching symbols from map and adding probe point for
them, a symbol type check is added. If the type of symbol is not a
function, skip it.

perf_tip() may allocate memory or use a literal, this means memory
wasn't freed if allocated. Change the API so that literals aren't used.
At the same time add missing frees for system_path. These issues were
spotted using leak sanitizer.
