The timerfd guarantees that it will return 8 bytes when a read(2)
is issued (a uint64_t giving the number of timer events during the
call). Check that it does so and log a non-fatal error if the byte
count is not 8.
Commit f10ad95 introduced a regression causing the size of regions
passed in on the command line to be truncated to zero. Initialise
the 'this_len' variable to the supplied length to correct this.
Commit f10ad95 introduced a regression in the calculation of the
number of areas in a region created with the --areasize switch:
vg_hex-lv_home: Created new region with 0 area(s) as region ID 1
vg_hex-lv_swap: Created new region with 0 area(s) as region ID 1
Fis this by using the correct region size when calculating the
value.
When dmstats is run with -v or higher enable a per-area reporting
mode for statistics regions. This will output one row per area
(rather than one row per region) and adds additional fields of use
when viewing areas:
area_id - index within the region assigned by libdm-stats
area_start - the start location of the area in the containing
device.
Add a '--raw' switch to stats reports that causes us to report the
basic counter values rather than derived metrics for each visible
statistics region.
Add prefixes to all dmsetup report types to allow the 'group_all'
option to be effective:

DR_NAME splitname_
When run with full verbosity dmsetup or dmstats reports will
output a figure that tracks a moving average over a window of the
last two intervals:

Due to the narrow window this is a very crude estimate and is only
of use to someone debugging or modifying the stats clock: remove
the value and the global variables used to track it.
Anyone with a particular use for this information can construct a
better mean by calculating the value of a greater number of
intervals.
Unlike 'info -c' and 'stats report' the 'dmstats list' subcommand
does its own report processing. This complicates the handling of
the DR_STATS and DR_STATS_META fields and leads to inconsistent
behaviour between the different commands. In particular it causes
'stats list' to segfault when using 'all' field options:
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Delete _stats_list() entirely and adapt _stats_report so that it
can correctly format a DR_STATS_META-only report request.
This requires passing the subcommand into _report_init() where it
is used in addition to the command name to select the default set
of report fields for the 'list' and 'report' stats subcommands.
With this change both 'list' and 'report' dmstats report will use
the correct report object type and ensure that it is initialised
appropriately for the field selection in use.
Although statistics and meta fields (region and area properties) share
the same object type the state of the handle they expect differs: meta
only expects a dm_stats_list() operation to have been performed whereas
statistics require a fully populated handle.
Distinguish between these requirements by separating the fields into
two distinct report types:
DR_STATS = 32,
DR_STATS_META = 64
The new category is described as "Mapped Device Statistics Region
Information" in the help text.
Make the use of the this_start and this_len variables easier to
follow and clarify the use of zero start and len arguments to
request a whole-device region.
Add a pair of fields to expose the current per-interval duation
estimate. The 'interval' field provides a real value in units of
seconds and the 'interval_ns' field provides the same quantity
expressed as a whole number of nanoseconds.
Introduce enums and global variables to record cleanly which command we
are processing and eliminate the historically inconsistent use of the
shifted argv[0] and fix assorted bugs discovered along the way.
Add dm_report_is_empty() to indicate there is no data awaiting output
and use this to suppress dmsetup report headings when no data is output
so we don't get a stray line saying 'Help' at the end of reporting help.
Define a report type (as the interface requires) so -o all selects
the right fields in splitname. (A fix for stats list will follow.)
Exit immediately if no device is supplied to dmsetup wipe_table instead
of hitting errors later and failing.
Adjust the command name printed in usage/help output to match command
invoked (most of the time).
The '--force' switch is only used by dmstats to allow either
creation or deletion of one or more regions on all devices.
These operations do not carry any risk: just a possible mess of
region IDs to be cleaned up.
Remove the use of '--force' for stats commands and change current
uses to a new '--alldevices' switch.
The region creation message just outputs the new region_id, e.g.:

This is fine when the device is unambigous (as above) but produces
unhelpful output when creating multiple regions, or regions on
multiple devices:

To address this refactor _stats_create_segments() (previously only
used when creating one-region-per-target for --segments) into a
more general _do_stats_create_regions() that can create regions
for each segment, or a single region spanning either the entire
device or a specied start/len range.
This allows us to output all region creation messages from a
single point where both the device name and all information needed
to derive the number of areas is available.
This allows us to log all these facts in the resulting messages:

Don't use cryptic abbreviations and make sure that all values can
be understood by someone not familiar with the clock internals.
Include the current interval number (inverse of the _count) in all
interval update messages and attempt to align interval timestamp
logs for interval counts < 99,999.
If _stats_report fails (e.g. due to an invalid device on the
command line) destroy the _report to prevent stats columns headings
from being displayed.
This also requires a change in main to test the return from
_perform_command_for_all_repeatable_args inside the interval loop
and exit immediately in case of error.
The _update_interval_times() function is called once per reported
object: when shutting down at the end of a run only the first call
should free timestamps. Clear the timestamp pointers after free
and use this to signal to other callers that the clock is already
shut down.
If the Linux timerfd interface to POSIX timers is available at compile
time use it for all report interval timekeeping. This gives more
accurate interval timing when the per-interval processing time is less
than the configured interval and simplifies the timestamp bookkeeping
required to keep accurate time.
For systems without timerfd support fall back to the simple usleep based
timer.
The error path of _stats_list frees the task and stats objects:
don't try to branch to it before they have been allocated.
tools/dmsetup.c: 4589 in _stats_help() - Null pointer dereferences (FORWARD_NULL)
There's no point testing _report here in _stats_report: it's always
initialised before the function is called and if the check did fail
we'd end up freeing an uninitialized dm_task in the error path.

Add the libdm-stats module to libdm: this implements a simple interface
for creating, managing and interrogating I/O statistics regions and
areas on device-mapper devices.
The library interface is documented in libdevmapper.h and provides a
'dm_stats' handle that is used to perform statistics operations and
obtain data.
Public methods are provided to create and destroy handles and to list,
create, and destroy statistics regions as well as to obtain and parse
counter data and calculate rate-based metrics.
This commit also adds a 'dmsetup stats' (aka 'dmstats') command with
'clear', 'create', 'delete', 'list', 'print', and 'report' sub-commands.
See the library documentation and the dmstats.8 manual page for detailed
API and command descriptions.
Don't do interval management and external timekeeping for stats in
dm_report: let applications handle this on their own.
Since this has not been included in a release remove it from the
library entirely and handle report timing directly inside dmsetup.
Add a function to print column headings regardless of whether they
have already been output. This will be used by dmstats to issue
periodic reminders of the column headings.
This patch removes a check for RH_HEADINGS_PRINTED from
_report_headings that prevents headings being displayed if the flag
is already set; this check is redundant since the only existing
caller (_output_as_columns()) already tests the flag before
calling the function.
No commands set has_subcommands yet.
Move multiple device loop to separate function because we'll
soon want to call it repeatedly.

This patch adds a new flag --deferred to dmsetup remove. If this flag is
specified and the device is open, it is scheduled to be deleted on
close.
struct dm_info is extended.
The existing dm_task_get_info() is converted into a wrapper around the
new version dm_task_get_info_with_deferred_remove() so existing binaries
can still use the old smaller structure.
Recompiled code will pick up the new larger structure.

Make dm_report_init_with_selection to accept an argument with an
array of reserved values where each element contains a triple:
{dm report field type, reserved value, array of strings representing this value}
When the selection is parsed, we always check whether a string
representation of some reserved value is not hit and if it is,
we use the reserved value assigned for this string instead of
trying to parse it as a value of certain field type.
This makes it possible to define selections like:
... --select lv_major=undefined (or -1 or unknown or undef or whatever string representations are registered for this reserved value in the future)
... --select lv_read_ahead=auto
... --select vg_mda_copies=unmanaged
With this, each time the field value of certain type is hit
and when we compare it with the selection, we use the proper
value for comparison.
For now, register these reserved values that are used at the moment
(also more descriptive names are used for the values):

This makes it easier to check against the fields (following patches for
report selection) and check whether size units are allowed or not
with the field value.
Warn when --udevcookie/DM_UDEV_COOKIE is used with 'dmsetup remove --force'.
When command is doing multiple ioctl operations on a single device,
it may invoke udev activity, that is colliding with further ioctl commands.
The result of such operation becomes unpredictable.
Use of --retry could partially help...
Send error message on stdout, since after _display_info_long()
command return errors.
Patch makes consistent behavior for command:
dmsetup info -c non-existing-dev
&
dmsetup info non-existing-dev
Now both commands report error on stderr when they return error status
for non-existing device.
Recent kernels allow messages to respond with a string.
Add dm_task_get_message_response() to libdevmapper to perform some
basic sanity checks and return this.
Have 'dmsetup message' display any response.
DM statistics will make extensive use of this.

This was a regression introduced with e33fd978a8
(libdm v1.02.68/lvm2 v2.02.89) with the introduction of new output
fields blkdevname and blkdevs_used for ls and deps dmsetup commands.
A new common '_process_options' fn was added with that commit, but the
fn was called prematurely which then broke processing of
'dmsetup splitname -o' which should implicitly use '-c' option
and this was failing after the commit:

The '-c' had to be used for correct operation:

Compared to names, UUIDs can't be renamed once they are created
for a device. The 'mangle' command will just issue an error message
about a need for manual intervention in this case - reactivating the
device (remove + create) does the job as the defualt mangling mode
used is "auto" and that will assign a correct mangled form the UUID.
With latest changes in the udev, some deprecated functions were removed
from libudev amongst which there was the "udev_get_dev_path" function
we used to compare a device directory used in udev and directore set in
libdevmapper. The "/dev" is hardcoded in udev now (udev version >= 183).
Amongst other changes and from packager's point of view, it's also
important to note that the libudev development library ("libudev-devel")
could now be a part of the systemd development library ("systemd-devel")
because of the udev + systemd merge.
Just to make it clearer since there is the "dmsetup info -c -o blkdevname"
as well that shows the "block device name for this mapping", having a
"BlkDevName" header on output.
It's a bit confusing then if the "dmsetup info -c -o devs_used,blkdevs_used"
is named with a plural "DevNames"/"BlkDevNames" but at the same time having
a totally different meaning than the singular form "BlkDevName".
DevNames --> DevNamesUsed
BlkDevNames --> BlkDevNamesUsed
...makes it much more comprehensible.
Auto mode can't deal with multiple mangled names. We can do that while working
in hex mode, but in auto mode, this would lead to device name ambiguity.
Add 'blkdevname' and 'blkdevs_used' field to dmsetup info -c -o.
Add 'blkdevname' option to dmsetup ls --tree to see block device names.
Add '-o options' to dmsetup deps and ls to select device name type on output.
Defer the test of the function return value after the string memory is released.
Otherwise in this error path the string would present memory leak.
(Thought in this case we are already out of memory...)
With recent update of dm_report_field_string() API call to accept
completely const objects - we no longer need loose constness here
and keep it forwarding.
Make configurable default behaviour how to deal with device node creates.
With udev system natural options should be 'resume'.
For older systems where user expect there is node in /dev/mapper immediately
after dmsetup create --notable - use 'create'
FIXME:
Code needs fixing passing this flag through udev cookie.
Add new function dm_task_set_add_node() to select between 2 types
of node creation in device directory.
DM_ADD_NODE_ON_RESUME is now default and ensures node is created on
resume. Old original behavior is accessible with DM_ADD_NODE_ON_CREATE.
In this case node would be created during dmsetup create --notable.
For the user 2 new options for dmsetup create are added:
[{--addnodeonresume | --addnodeoncreate }]
Properly working node creation on resume is needed for proper operation
stacking and ability to correctly check in which state the device should
after whole udev transation.
Add test for NULL before passing uuid as src argument to memcpy.
As memcpy function is declared as function not accepting NULL.
Though we pass NULL only with zero length so this patch presents
no functional change to the code.
This rule appeared in udev v152 and it helps us to support spurious events
where we didn't have any flags set (events originated in udevadm trigger
or the watch rule). These flags are important to direct the rule application.
Now, with the help of this rule, we can regenerate old udev db content.
To implement this correctly, we need to flag all proper DM udev events with
DM_UDEV_PRIMARY_SOURCE_FLAG. That happens automatically for all ioctls
generating events originated in libdevmapper.
This prevents some confusion when libudev was not found so udev_sync was disabled
automatically. Configure was successful though giving only a tiny warning.
Also, if "dmsetup udevcreatecookie" is used, never return 0x000000 as a result if
udev is not running and keep the output blank.
- add DM_UDEV_DISABLE_LIBRARY_FALLBACK udev flag to rely on udev only
- export dm_udev_create_cookie function to create new cookies on demand
- add --udevcookie, udevcreatecookie and udevreleasecookie for dmsetup
(to support "udev transactions" where one cookie value can be used for
several dmsetup calls)
- don't use DM_UDEV_DISABLE_CHECKING env. var. anymore and set the state
automatically (based on udev and libdevmapper dev path comparison)
Sometimes it is really needed to switch off udev checking and the warnings we show when
we detect that udev has not done its job right - the messages like "Udev should have done
this and that. Falling back to direct node creation/removal. " etc.
This would be especially handy while setting DM_DEV_DIR env var that could be set to a
different location than standard /dev (udev can't create nodes/symlinks out of that one
directory that is configured into udevd). The exact same situation happens while we're
running our tests.
This provides better support for environments where udev rules are installed
but udev_sync is not compiled in (however, using udev_sync is highly
recommended). It also provides consistent and expected functionality even
when '--noudevsync' option is used.
There is still requirement for kernel >= 2.6.31 for the flags to work though
(it uses DM cookies to pass the flags into the kernel and set them in udev
event environment that we can read in udev rules).
- we have these levels when the udev rules are processed:

DM_UDEV_DISABLE_{DM, SUBSYSTEM, DISK, OTHER}_RULES_FLAG
- add DM_UDEV_DISABLE_DM_RULES_FLAG to disable 10-dm.rules
- add DM_UDEV_DISABLE_OTHER_RULES_FLAG to disable all the other (non-dm) rules.
We cutoff these rules by using the 'last_rule', so this one should really be
used with great care and in well-founded situations. We use this for lvm's
hidden and layer devices now.
- add a parameter for add_dev_node, rm_dev_node and rename_dev_node so it's
possible to switch on/off udev checks
- use DM_UDEV_DISABLE_DM_RULES_FLAG and DM_UDEV_DISABLE_SUBSYSTEM_RULES_FLAG
if there's no cookie set and we have resume, remove and rename ioctl.
This could happen when someone uses the libdevmapper that is compiled with
udev_sync but the software does not make use of it. This way we can switch
off the rules and fallback to libdevmapper node creation so there's no
udev/libdevmapper race.
