If nested events occur while the file descriptor handler is still
active then chaos can ensue. For example, if a node is banned and the
lock is explicitly cancelled (e.g. due to election loss) then
double-talloc-free()s abound.

When the number of fast path vacuuming runs is 0 then a full vacuuming
run is done. This means the first one is a full run, which is almost
certainly not what is intended.
Combine the 2 conditionals to only flag a full vacuuming run when the
count exceeds the configured limit. This means that the
full_vacuum_run flag is set in both parent and child, but this is
harmless... and is better than getting it wrong.
Also tweak the comparison to be less-than-or-equal, since the zeroth
run needs to be counted.

The lock may have been lost due to a failure in the underlying locking
mechanism. This could be due to quorum loss or similar. It is best
to call an election to confirm that this node should still be master.
At worst, the node will reelect itself, fail to take the lock and then
ban itself. This is a suitable outcome for a node that has been
partitioned from others in the cluster.

maximum. In this case the top bucket contains any hop counts
>= 16384, compared to the current situation where the top bucket contains

There have been a couple of cases where recovery repeatedly takes just
over 2 minutes to fail. Therefore, banning credits expire between
failures and a continuously problematic node is never banned,
resulting in endless recoveries. This is because it takes 2
applications of banning credits before a node is banned, which
generally involves 2 recovery failures.
The recovery helper makes up to 3 attempts to recover each database
during a single run. If a node causes 3 failures then this is really
equivalent to 3 recovery failures in the model that existed before the
recovery helper added retries. In that case the node would have been
banned after 2 failures.
So, instead of applying banning credits to the "most failing" node,
simply ban it directly from the recovery helper.
If multiple nodes are causing recovery failures then this can cause a
node to be banned more quickly than it might otherwise have been, even
pre-recovery-helper. However, 90 seconds (i.e. 3 failures) is a long
time to be in recovery, so banning earlier seems like the best
approach.

ctdbd enters a broken state if eventd goes away. A clean shutdown is
not possible because that involves running events. Restarting eventd
is possible but this might mask a serious problem and it is possible
that eventd might keep on disappearing. Just exit.

If a node fails to delete a record in TRY_DELETE_RECORDS control during
vacuuming, then it's possible that other nodes also may fail to delete a
record. So instead of deleting the record from RB tree on first failure,
keep track of the remote failures.
Update delete_list.remote_error and delete_list.left statistics only
once per record during the delete_record_traverse.

If SIGTERM is received and the tevent signal handler setup in the
recovery daemon is still enabled then the signal is handled and a
corresponding event is queued. The child never runs an event loop so
the signal is effectively ignored.
Resetting the SIGTERM handler isn't enough. A signal can arrive
before that.
Block SIGTERM before forking and then immediately unblock it in the
parent.
In the child, unblock SIGTERM after the signal handler is reset. An
explicit unblock is needed because according to sigprocmask(2) "the
signal mask is preserved across execve(2)".

There are numerous places in the code where errno can be lost causing
the wrong error to be printed by a caller. Change ctdb_sys_send_arp()
to always return a useful errno on error instead of returning -1 and

The current method of retrying the connection to eventd means that
messages get logged for each failure.
Instead, pass a pipe file descriptor to eventd and wait for it to
write 0 to the pipe to indicate that it is ready to accept client
connections.

The comment immediately above this code says "don't allow local
clients to attach" and then looks up the client ID regardless of
whether the request is local or remote.
This means that an intentional remote attach from a client will not
work correctly. No real client should ever do that since clients
attach so they an access databases locally. Perhaps some sanity
checks should be added.

This broadcast is misnamed. Both places where this type of broadcast
is used expect the broadcast to go to all active nodes.
Make the corresponding change to the semantics in the daemon by
sending to all active nodes.
There is a mismatch between the ideas of VNN map and active nodes. A
node that is not in the VNN map but is active can still host database
records. These were the same until the LMASTER capability was
introduced and then the logic was not updated.
The only place where the VNN map is relevant is when finding the
location master of a record in the migration code.

Volatile databases now have their own subdirectory. This makes things
easier if we later recommend mounting a tmpfs on the volatile database
directory, rather than supporting the current CTDB_DBDIR=tmpfs magic.
No need to create database directories for local daemon tests. ctdbd
will do that.

If the specified file or the default does not exist then log a
warning.
This is done in the takeover code to localise the handling of the
public addresses file. Soon the daemon command-line option will go
away and the takeover code will be replaced in the not too distant
future.

If PULL_DB control times out but the remote node is still sending the
data, then the tevent_req for pull_database_send will be freed without
removing the message handler. So when the data is received, srvid
handler will be called and it will try to access tevent_req which will
result in use-after-free and abort.

STARTUP control is primarily used to synchronise tcp tickles from running
nodes to a node which has just started up. Earlier STARTUP control was
sent (using BROADCAST_ALL) after setup event. Once the other nodes in
the cluster connected to this node, the queued up messages would be sent
and the tcp tickles would get synchronised.
Recent fix to drop messages to disconnected or not-yet-connected nodes,
the STARTUP control was never sent to the remote nodes and the tcp
tickles did not get synchronised.
To fix this problem send the STARTUP control (using BROADCAST_CONNECTED)
after startup event. By this time all the running nodes in the cluster
are connected.

Whenever the current git hash changes, we recompile ctdb.c and
ctdb_daemon.c. As both have quite a few warnings with -Wall, this
makes it quite difficult to see the real warnings that pop up during
development. Centralize the ctdb_version_string to just a single file
without warnings.

Monitoring can fail during recovery due to databases (e.g. registry)
being unavailable. This has been avoided by explicitly disabling
monitoring around recovery via the START_RECOVERY and END_RECOVERY
controls. With this approach only there is still a window between
enabling recovery mode and START_RECOVERY when monitoring could be
attempted. However, explicitly disabling monitoring is unnecessary
because monitoring is not done when a node is in recovery.
So remove the explicit disable/enable of monitoring and rely on
monitoring being skipped when recovery mode is active.
The only possible change of behaviour with this change is that there
is now a window between setting recovery mode to normal and the
END_RECOVERY control where monitoring is enabled. However, at this
point databases would be available and the "recovered" event will
cancel any in-progress monitoring.

If a call request for a key (migration request) is in flight, then all
the subsequent call requests for the same key are deferred. In that case,
the data corresponding to key read from the local tdb is useless and there
is no need to keep it around. Once the deferred call is reprocessed,
the data corresponding to that key will be fetched again.

Recovery and takeover are run via helper from recovery daemon. While the
helpers are running, it's possible for the current node to lose election.
If that happens, abort the currently running recovery/takeover helper.

Once the recovery starts and databases are frozen, then all the record
access is postponed till the recovery is complete except reading the
database sequence number. Database access for reading sequence number
is done via a control which does not check if the databases are frozen
or not.
If the database is frozen and if the freeze transaction is not started
(this can happen when a node is inactive, or during recovery when the
database is frozen but the transaction has not yet started), then trying
to read sequence number will cause ctdb daemon to deadlock.
Before reading the sequence number, check if the database access is
allowed.

This causes any tracked connections for the IP address to be lost.
When doing a takeip, the server sends a tickle ACK to the client, the
client responds with a valid ACK and the server's TCP stack responds
with a reset because the connection does not exist. However, in the
updateip, case the connection *does* exist, so the tickle *does not*
cause the connection to be reset.
ctdb_announce_vnn_iface() clears the list of tracked TCP connections
while sending the tickle ACKs. So, if there are no reconnects as in
the takeip case, then the list of connections is simply lost.
The "updateip" event in the 10.interface event script already sends
gratuitous ARPs and tickles connections in both directions. This
ensures that traffic continues after packets may have been dropped
when the script temporarily blocks traffic to the IP address.
All of this means that the call to ctdb_announce_vnn_iface() can just
be deleted.

Currently, every lock helper will log a message if it cannot get a lock.
This can spam the logs and overwhelm syslog if there are hundreds of
lock helpers waiting for contended record.
Instead keep track of the record for which we have already logged once
with specific timeout interval. If we get timeout interval larger than
the previously logged interval, then log again once. This will reduce
the amount of logs for contended records to a single log entry per 10
seconds per record.

During revoking readonly delegations, if one of the nodes disappears,
then there is no point re-trying revoking readonly delegation immedately.
The database needs to be recovered before the revoke operation can
succeed.
However, if the revoke is successful, then all the write requests need
to be processed immediately before the read-only requests. This avoids
starving write requests, in case there are read-only requests coming
from other nodes.
In deferred_call_destructor, the result of revoke is not available and
deferred calls cannot be correctly ordered. To correctly order the
deferred calls, process them in revokechild_destructor where the result
of revoke is known.

Use a "bitmap" of available IPs for each IP address instead of walking
the list of available IP addresses.
For ctdb/tests/takeover/lcp2.030.sh, this improves the time taken on
my laptop from:
real 0m11.997s
user 0m11.960s
sys 0m0.000s
to
real 0m8.571s
user 0m8.544s
sys 0m0.000s
So, when assigning all 900 IP addresses the improvement is about 25%.
For the no-op case (where all IPs are already assigned to nodes), the
extra setup adds a small fraction of a second for 900 IPs.
Intermediate cases result in intermediate improvements.

This function is currently called twice each time a node is banned.
ctdb_local_node_got_banned() is already called from the banning code,
either due to a received banning control or a node banning itself.
Given that other nodes can't set a node's BANNED flag, a node can only
be banned via the above mechanisms, so drop the redundant call.

Earlier we were relying on SCHED_RESET_ON_FORK to reset the priority of lock
helper processes. Since SCHED_RESET_ON_FORK support has been removed, the
scheduling priority of child processes created using vfork() need to be reset
explicitly in the helper processes.

If anything should be used here it should be talloc functions.
However, this is a remnant from when ctdb_sys_find_ifname() was used
here and, for some reason, it used strdup(3).
In this case the interface string doesn't actually need to be copied.
The only use of it is when ctdb_event_script_callback_v() uses it with
the format string in a call to talloc_vasprintf(). In the same
context the IP address isn't copied.

If *async_reply isn't set then the calling code will reply to the
control and free the control structure. In some places the control
structure pointer is stolen onto state before a synchronous exit due
to an error condition. The error handling then frees state and
returns an error. The calling code will access-after-free when trying
to reply to the control.
To make this easier to understand, the convention is that any
(immediate) error results in a synchronous reply to the control via an
error return code AND *async_reply not being set. In this case the
control structure pointer should never be stolen onto state. State is
never used for a synchronous reply, it is only ever used by a
callback.
Also initialise state->c to NULL so that any premature call to a
callback (e.g. in an immediate error path) is more obvious.

The callback should never be called before an immediate return. The
callback might reply to a control and the caller of
ctdb_event_script_callback_v() may not have assigned/stolen the
pointer to control structure into the private data. Therefore,
calling the callback can dereference an uninitialised pointer to the
control structure when attempting to reply.
An event script isn't being run until the child has been forked. So
update relevant state and set the destructor after this.
If the child can't be forked then free the state and return with an
error. The callback will not be called and the caller will process
the error correctly.

When an error occurs so an IP address is not released then the PNN in
the VNN is currently incorrectly updated.
Instead, update the PNN in the callback when the release is
successful. Also, explicitly update the PNN on redundant releases.

Commit c40fc62642 runs the IP allocation
algorithm after calculating the timeout offset. If the algorithm
takes a long time then there may be no attempt to release or take over
IPs.
Instead, reset the timeout just before the RELEASE_IP stage if an
early jump to IPREALLOCATED was not taken.

This is inconsistent with the rest of the local IP verification. It
should notice problems but not try to fix them directly. Like other
cases, it should use an IP takeover run to try to fix the problem. In
this case the address might have just been added and an out-of-band
RELEASE_IP might cause conflicts (i.e. "another change is in flight")
with a scheduled IP takeover run.
This effectively reverts commit
694c1b269e. Not sure why this was
needed after c7e648c2d1. More recently
commit 6471541d6d moves responsibility
for determining interface/netmask to 10.interface so this should
continue to work just fine.

If the IP address is on an interface then it won't help to pretend
that it isn't. This will simply cause a takeip event, which will fail
because the address can't be added. Note that the IP address isn't
necessarily new - something unexpected may have happened.

The address may already be assigned to another node, so this is wrong.
It also leaves the interface unknown.
This is better left to code that handles rogue IP addresses. A
takeover run should correctly takeover the address if it is assigned
to this node or release it if it is assigned to another node. Coming

This has the advantage of using common code. Also, if there was
previously a failed attempt to release the IP address as part of a
delete, then this will finish processing the delete.
Extra care needs to be taken when a VNN is actually deleted.

This contains the cleanup that needs to be done after an IP address is
released from an interface.
state->vnn is set to the return value from release_ip_post(), which is
either the original VNN, or NULL if it was deleted. This allows
correct handling of the in-flight flag in the destructor for state.

If there's an allocation failure then the implicit early return in
CTDB_NO_MEMORY_VOID() means that no reply is sent to the control.
ctdb_daemon_send_message() makes a copy of the data, so don't copy it
here and remove an unnecessary chance of failure.

This drastically simplifies the code. "ctdb reloadips" behaves the
same, since it causes a takeover run immediately after IPs are
deleted. "ctdb delip" now needs to be followed with an explicit "ctdb
ipreallocate".

RELEASE_IP sometimes times out because killing TCP connections can
take a long time.
The aim of the takeover timeout is actually to limit the total amount
of time for an IP takeover run. So, calculate a combined timeout
offset once and use it for each of the RELEASE_IP, TAKEOVER_IP,
IPREALLOCATED stages. This gives RELEASE_IP more time to kill TCP
connections but still limits the total time.
