9df654268a pNFS: Fix a hang in nfs4_evict_inode()
commit f63955721a upstream.

We are not allowed to call pnfs_mark_matching_lsegs_return() without
also holding a reference to the layout header, since doing so could lead
to the reference count going to zero when we call
pnfs_layout_remove_lseg(). This again can lead to a hang when we get to
nfs4_evict_inode() and are unable to clear the layout pointer.

pnfs_layout_return_unused_byserver() is guilty of this behaviour, and
has been seen to trigger the refcount warning prior to a hang.

8acc3e228e pNFS: Avoid a live lock condition in pnfs_update_layout()
[ Upstream commit 880265c77a ]

If we're about to send the first layoutget for an empty layout, we want
to make sure that we drain out the existing pending layoutget calls
first. The reason is that these layouts may have been already implicitly
returned to the server by a recall to which the client gave a
NFS4ERR_NOMATCHING_LAYOUT response.

The problem is that wait_var_event_killable() could in principle see the
plh_outstanding count go back to '1' when the first process to wake up
starts sending a new layoutget. If it fails to get a layout, then this
loop can continue ad infinitum...

96fdbb1c85 NFSv4/pNFS: Do not fail I/O when we fail to allocate the pNFS layout
[ Upstream commit 3764a17e31 ]

Commit 587f03deb6 caused pnfs_update_layout() to stop returning ENOMEM
when the memory allocation fails, and hence causes it to fall back to
trying to do I/O through the MDS. There is no guarantee that this will
fare any better. If we're failing the pNFS layout allocation, then we
should just redirty the page and retry later.

edb91a475d NFSv4/pNFS: Fix another issue with a list iterator pointing to the head
[ Upstream commit 7c9d845f06 ]

In nfs4_callback_devicenotify(), if we don't find a matching entry for
the deviceid, we're left with a pointer to 'struct nfs_server' that
actually points to the list of super blocks associated with our struct
nfs_client.
Furthermore, even if we have a valid pointer, nothing pins the super
block, and so the struct nfs_server could end up getting freed while
we're using it.

Since all we want is a pointer to the struct pnfs_layoutdriver_type,
let's skip all the iteration over super blocks, and just use APIs to
find the layout driver directly.

4b96edea5c NFSv4/pNFS: Fix a layoutget livelock loop
[ Upstream commit e20772cbdf ]

If NFS_LAYOUT_RETURN_REQUESTED is set, but there is no value set for
the layout plh_return_seq, we can end up in a livelock loop in which
every layout segment retrieved by a new call to layoutget is immediately
invalidated by pnfs_layout_need_return().
To get around this, we should just set plh_return_seq to the current
value of the layout stateid's seqid.

a668a77e6a NFSv4/pnfs: Fix the layout barrier update
[ Upstream commit aa95edf309 ]

If we have multiple outstanding layoutget requests, the current code to
update the layout barrier assumes that the outstanding layout stateids
are updated in order. That's not necessarily the case.

Instead of using the value of lo->plh_outstanding as a guesstimate for
the window of values we need to accept, just wait to update the window
until we're processing the last one. The intention here is just to
ensure that we don't process 2^31 seqid updates without also updating
the barrier.

f989065218 NFSv4: Fix a NULL pointer dereference in pnfs_mark_matching_lsegs_return()
commit a421d21860 upstream.

Commit de144ff423 changes _pnfs_return_layout() to call
pnfs_mark_matching_lsegs_return() passing NULL as the struct
pnfs_layout_range argument. Unfortunately,
pnfs_mark_matching_lsegs_return() doesn't check if we have a value here
before dereferencing it, causing an oops.

I'm able to hit this crash consistently when running connectathon basic

ff557bf971 pNFS/NFSv4: Improve rejection of out-of-order layouts
[ Upstream commit d29b468da4 ]

If a layoutget ends up being reordered w.r.t. a layoutreturn, e.g. due
to a layoutget-on-open not knowing a priori which file to lock, then we
must assume the layout is no longer being considered valid state by the

Incrementally improve our ability to reject such states by using the

287a9c558b NFSv4: Clean up pNFS return-on-close error handling
Both close and delegreturn have identical code to handle pNFS
return-on-close. This patch refactors that code and places it
in pnfs.c

9c47b18cf7 pNFS: Ensure we do clear the return-on-close layout stateid on fatal errors
IF the server rejected our layout return with a state error such as
NFS4ERR_BAD_STATEID, or even a stale inode error, then we do want
to clear out all the remaining layout segments and mark that stateid
as invalid.

58bbeab425 pnfs: Fix a problem where we gratuitously start doing I/O through the MDS
If the client has to stop in pnfs_update_layout() to wait for another
layoutget to complete, it currently exits and defaults to I/O through
the MDS if the layoutget was successful.
