POSIX typically only refreshes the user's supplementary group
information upon login. Since NFS servers may often refresh their
concept of the user supplementary group membership at their own cadence,
it is possible for the NFS client's access cache to become stale due to
the user's group membership changing on the server after the user has
already logged in on the client.
While it is reasonable to expect that such group membership changes are
rare, and that we do not want to optimise the cache to accommodate them,
it is also not unreasonable for the user to expect that if they log out
and log back in again, that the staleness would clear up.

READ/WRITE proved to be actively confusing - the meanings are
"data destination, as used with read(2)" and "data source, as
used with write(2)", but people keep interpreting those as
"we read data from it" and "we write data to it", i.e. exactly
the wrong way.
Call them ITER_DEST and ITER_SOURCE - at least that is harder
to misinterpret...

The call, kobject_get_ownership(), does not modify the kobject passed
into it, so make it const. This propagates down into the kobj_type
function callbacks so make the kobject passed into them also const,
ensuring that nothing in the kobject is being changed here.
This helps make it more obvious what calls and callbacks do, and do not,
modify structures passed to them.

A common exploit pattern for ROP attacks is to abuse prepare_kernel_cred()
in order to construct escalated privileges[1]. Instead of providing a
short-hand argument (NULL) to the "daemon" argument to indicate using
init_cred as the base cred, require that "daemon" is always set to
an actual task. Replace all existing callers that were passing NULL
with &init_task.
Future attacks will need to have sufficiently powerful read/write
primitives to have found an appropriately privileged task and written it
to the ROP stack as an argument to succeed, which is similarly difficult
to the prior effort needed to escalate privileges before struct cred
existed: locate the current cred and overwrite the uid member.
This has the added benefit of meaning that prepare_kernel_cred() can no
longer exceed the privileges of the init task, which may have changed from
the original init_cred (e.g. dropping capabilities from the bounding set).

When holding a delegation, the NFS client optimizes away setting the
attributes of a file from the GETATTR in the compound after CLONE, and for
a zero-length CLONE we will end up setting the inode's size to zero in
nfs42_copy_dest_done(). Handle this case by computing the resulting count
from the server's reported size after CLONE's GETATTR.

There's a small window where a LOCK sent during a delegation return can
race with another OPEN on client, but the open stateid has not yet been
updated. In this case, the client doesn't handle the OLD_STATEID error
from the server and will lose this lock, emitting:
"NFS: nfs4_handle_delegation_recall_error: unhandled error -10024".
Fix this by sending the task through the nfs4 error handling in
nfs4_lock_done() when we may have to reconcile our stateid with what the
server believes it to be. For this case, the result is a retry of the
LOCK operation with the updated stateid.

If the server reboots while we are engaged in a delegation return, and
there is a pNFS layout with return-on-close set, then the current code
can end up deadlocking in pnfs_roc() when nfs_inode_set_delegation()
tries to return the old delegation.
Now that delegreturn actually uses its own copy of the stateid, it
should be safe to just always update the delegation stateid in place.

The 'nfs_server' and 'mount_server' structures include a union of
'struct sockaddr' (with the older 16 bytes max address size) and
'struct sockaddr_storage' which is large enough to hold all the
supported sa_family types (128 bytes max size). The runtime memcpy()
buffer overflow checker is seeing attempts to write beyond the 16
bytes as an overflow, but the actual expected size is that of 'struct
sockaddr_storage'. Plumb the use of 'struct sockaddr_storage' more
completely through-out NFS, which results in adjusting the memcpy()
buffers to the correct union members. Avoids this false positive run-time
warning under CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE:

The current way of setting and getting posix acls through the generic
xattr interface is error prone and type unsafe. The vfs needs to
interpret and fixup posix acls before storing or reporting it to
userspace. Various hacks exist to make this work. The code is hard to
understand and difficult to maintain in it's current form. Instead of
making this work by hacking posix acls through xattr handlers we are
building a dedicated posix acl api around the get and set inode
operations. This removes a lot of hackiness and makes the codepaths
easier to maintain. A lot of background can be found in [1].
The current inode operation for getting posix acls takes an inode
argument but various filesystems (e.g., 9p, cifs, overlayfs) need access
to the dentry. In contrast to the ->set_acl() inode operation we cannot
simply extend ->get_acl() to take a dentry argument. The ->get_acl()
inode operation is called from:
acl_permission_check()
-> check_acl()
-> get_acl()
which is part of generic_permission() which in turn is part of
inode_permission(). Both generic_permission() and inode_permission() are
called in the ->permission() handler of various filesystems (e.g.,
overlayfs). So simply passing a dentry argument to ->get_acl() would
amount to also having to pass a dentry argument to ->permission(). We
should avoid this unnecessary change.
So instead of extending the existing inode operation rename it from
->get_acl() to ->get_inode_acl() and add a ->get_acl() method later that
passes a dentry argument and which filesystems that need access to the
dentry can implement instead of ->get_inode_acl(). Filesystems like cifs
which allow setting and getting posix acls but not using them for
permission checking during lookup can simply not implement
->get_inode_acl().
This is intended to be a non-functional change.

Since some filesystem rely on the dentry being available to them when
setting posix acls (e.g., 9p and cifs) they cannot rely on set acl inode
operation. But since ->set_acl() is required in order to use the generic
posix acl xattr handlers filesystems that do not implement this inode
operation cannot use the handler and need to implement their own
dedicated posix acl handlers.
Update the ->set_acl() inode method to take a dentry argument. This
allows all filesystems to rely on ->set_acl().
As far as I can tell all codepaths can be switched to rely on the dentry
instead of just the inode. Note that the original motivation for passing
the dentry separate from the inode instead of just the dentry in the
xattr handlers was because of security modules that call
security_d_instantiate(). This hook is called during
d_instantiate_new(), d_add(), __d_instantiate_anon(), and
d_splice_alias() to initialize the inode's security context and possibly
to set security.* xattrs. Since this only affects security.* xattrs this
is completely irrelevant for posix acls.

Commit 064109db53 ("NFS: remove redundant code in nfs_file_write()")
identifies that filemap_fdatawait_range() will always return 0 and removes
a dead error-handling case in nfs_file_write(). With this change however,
assigning the return of filemap_fdatawait_range() to the result variable is
a dead store.
Remove this needless assignment.
No functional change. No change in object code.

Currently, SUNRPC clears the whole of .pc_argsize before processing
each incoming RPC transaction. Add an extra parameter to struct
svc_procedure to enable upper layers to reduce the amount of each
operation's argument structure that is zeroed by SUNRPC.
The size of struct nfsd4_compoundargs, in particular, is a lot to
clear on each incoming RPC Call. A subsequent patch will cut this
down to something closer to what NFSv2 and NFSv3 uses.
This patch should cause no behavior changes.

The fallocate call invalidates suid and sgid bits as part of normal
operation. We need to mark the mode bits as invalid when using fallocate
with an suid so these will be updated the next time the user looks at them.
This fixes xfstests generic/683 and generic/684.

Rewrite the core freezer to behave better wrt thawing and be simpler
in general.
By replacing PF_FROZEN with TASK_FROZEN, a special block state, it is
ensured frozen tasks stay frozen until thawed and don't randomly wake
up early, as is currently possible.
As such, it does away with PF_FROZEN and PF_FREEZER_SKIP, freeing up
two PF_flags (yay!).
Specifically; the current scheme works a little like:
freezer_do_not_count();
schedule();
freezer_count();
And either the task is blocked, or it lands in try_to_freezer()
through freezer_count(). Now, when it is blocked, the freezer
considers it frozen and continues.
However, on thawing, once pm_freezing is cleared, freezer_count()
stops working, and any random/spurious wakeup will let a task run
before its time.
That is, thawing tries to thaw things in explicit order; kernel
threads and workqueues before doing bringing SMP back before userspace
etc.. However due to the above mentioned races it is entirely possible
for userspace tasks to thaw (by accident) before SMP is back.
This can be a fatal problem in asymmetric ISA architectures (eg ARMv9)
where the userspace task requires a special CPU to run.
As said; replace this with a special task state TASK_FROZEN and add
the following state transitions:
TASK_FREEZABLE -> TASK_FROZEN
__TASK_STOPPED -> TASK_FROZEN
__TASK_TRACED -> TASK_FROZEN
The new TASK_FREEZABLE can be set on any state part of TASK_NORMAL
(IOW. TASK_INTERRUPTIBLE and TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE) -- any such state
is already required to deal with spurious wakeups and the freezer
causes one such when thawing the task (since the original state is
lost).
The special __TASK_{STOPPED,TRACED} states *can* be restored since
their canonical state is in ->jobctl.
With this, frozen tasks need an explicit TASK_FROZEN wakeup and are
free of undue (early / spurious) wakeups.

nfs_unlink() calls d_delete() twice if it receives ENOENT from the
server - once in nfs_dentry_handle_enoent() from nfs_safe_remove and
once in nfs_dentry_remove_handle_error().
nfs_rmddir() also calls it twice - the nfs_dentry_handle_enoent() call
is direct and inside a region locked with ->rmdir_sem
It is safe to call d_delete() twice if the refcount > 1 as the dentry is
simply unhashed.
If the refcount is 1, the first call sets d_inode to NULL and the second
call crashes.
This patch guards the d_delete() call from nfs_dentry_handle_enoent()
leaving the one under ->remdir_sem in case that is important.
In mainline it would be safe to remove the d_delete() call. However in
older kernels to which this might be backported, that would change the
behaviour of nfs_unlink(). nfs_unlink() used to unhash the dentry which
resulted in nfs_dentry_handle_enoent() not calling d_delete(). So in
older kernels we need the d_delete() in nfs_dentry_remove_handle_error()
when called from nfs_unlink() but not when called from nfs_rmdir().
To make the code work correctly for old and new kernels, and from both
nfs_unlink() and nfs_rmdir(), we protect the d_delete() call with
simple_positive(). This ensures it is never called in a circumstance
where it could crash.

Since pnfs_write_done_resend_to_mds() does not actually call
end_page_writeback() on the pages that are being redirected to the
metadata server, callers of fsync() do not see the I/O as complete until
the writeback to the MDS finishes. We therefore do not need to set
NFS_CONTEXT_RESEND_WRITES, since there is nothing to redrive.
Signed-off-by: Trond Myklebust <trond.myklebust@hammerspace.com>
Currently, when the writeback code detects a server reboot, it redirties
any pages that were not committed to disk, and it sets the flag
NFS_CONTEXT_RESEND_WRITES in the nfs_open_context of the file descriptor
that dirtied the file. While this allows the file descriptor in question
to redrive its own writes, it violates the fsync() requirement that we
should be synchronising all writes to disk.
While the problem is infrequent, we do see corner cases where an
untimely server reboot causes the fsync() call to abandon its attempt to
sync data to disk and causing data corruption issues due to missed error
conditions or similar.
In order to tighted up the client's ability to deal with this situation
without introducing livelocks, add a counter that records the number of
times pages are redirtied due to a server reboot-like condition, and use
that in fsync() to redrive the sync to disk.

New predicate (user_backed_iter()) that is true for ITER_IOVEC and

checking that pages we modify after getting them from iov_iter_get_pages()
would need to be dirtied.
DO NOT assume that replacing iter_is_iovec() with user_backed_iter()
will solve all problems - there's code that uses iter_is_iovec() to
decide how to poke around in iov_iter guts and for that the predicate
replacement obviously won't suffice.

NFS unlink() (and rename over existing target) must determine if the
file is open, and must perform a "silly rename" instead of an unlink (or
before rename) if it is. Otherwise the client might hold a file open
which has been removed on the server.
Consequently if it determines that the file isn't open, it must block
any subsequent opens until the unlink/rename has been completed on the
server.
This is currently achieved by unhashing the dentry. This forces any
open attempt to the slow-path for lookup which will block on i_rwsem on
the directory until the unlink/rename completes. A future patch will
change the VFS to only get a shared lock on i_rwsem for unlink, so this
will no longer work.
Instead we introduce an explicit interlock. A special value is stored
in dentry->d_fsdata while the unlink/rename is running and
->d_revalidate blocks while that value is present. When ->d_revalidate
unblocks, the dentry will be invalid. This closes the race
without requiring exclusion on i_rwsem.
d_fsdata is already used in two different ways.
1/ an IS_ROOT directory dentry might have a "devname" stored in
d_fsdata. Such a dentry doesn't have a name and so cannot be the
target of unlink or rename. For safety we check if an old devname
is still stored, and remove it if it is.
2/ a dentry with DCACHE_NFSFS_RENAMED set will have a 'struct
nfs_unlinkdata' stored in d_fsdata. While this is set maydelete()
will fail, so an unlink or rename will never proceed on such
a dentry.
Neither of these can be in effect when a dentry is the target of unlink
or rename. So we can expect d_fsdata to be NULL, and store a special
value ((void*)1) which is given the name NFS_FSDATA_BLOCKED to indicate
that any lookup will be blocked.
The d_count() is incremented under d_lock() when a lookup finds the
dentry, so we check d_count() is low, and set NFS_FSDATA_BLOCKED under
the same lock to avoid any races.

Currently, we try to determine whether to issue a commit based on
nfs_write_need_commit which looks at the current verifier. In the case
where we got a short write and then tried to follow it up with one that
failed, the verifier can't be trusted.
What we really want to know is whether the pgio request had any
successful writes that came back as UNSTABLE. Add a new flag to the pgio
request, and use that to indicate that we've had a successful unstable
write. Only issue a commit if that flag is set.

When the client gets back a short DIO write, it will then attempt to
issue another write to finish the DIO request. If that write then fails
(as is often the case in an -ENOSPC situation), then we still may need
to issue a COMMIT if the earlier short write was unstable. If that COMMIT
then succeeds, then we don't want the client to reschedule the write
requests, and to instead just return a short write. Otherwise, we can
end up looping over the same DIO write forever.
Always consult dreq->error after a successful RPC, even when the flag
state is not NFS_ODIRECT_DONE.

nfs_idmap_instantiate() will cause the process that is waiting in
request_key_with_auxdata() to wake up and exit. If there is a second
process waiting for the idmap->idmap_mutex, then it may wake up and
start a new call to request_key_with_auxdata(). If the call to
idmap_pipe_downcall() from the first process has not yet finished
calling nfs_idmap_complete_pipe_upcall_locked(), then we may end up

The valid values of nfs options port and mountport are 0 to USHRT_MAX.
The fs parser will return a fail for port values that are negative
and the sloppy option handling then returns success.
But the sloppy option handling is meant to return success for invalid
options not valid options with invalid values.
Restricting the sloppy option override to handle failure returns for
invalid options only is sufficient to resolve this problem.

For filesystems that are case insensitive and case preserving, we need
to be able to rename from one case folded variant of the filename to
another.
Currently, if we have looked up the target filename before the call to
rename, then we may have a hashed dentry with that target name in the

To avoid that, let's drop the target dentry, and leave it to the server
to optimise away the rename if that is the correct thing to do.

Currently shrinkers are anonymous objects. For debugging purposes they
can be identified by count/scan function names, but it's not always
useful: e.g. for superblock's shrinkers it's nice to have at least an
idea of to which superblock the shrinker belongs.
This commit adds names to shrinkers. register_shrinker() and
prealloc_shrinker() functions are extended to take a format and arguments
to master a name.
In some cases it's not possible to determine a good name at the time when
a shrinker is allocated. For such cases shrinker_debugfs_rename() is
provided.
The expected format is:
<subsystem>-<shrinker_type>[:<instance>]-<id>
For some shrinkers an instance can be encoded as (MAJOR:MINOR) pair.
After this change the shrinker debugfs directory looks like:
$ cd /sys/kernel/debug/shrinker/
$ ls

Commit f49169c97f ("NFSD: Remove svc_serv_ops::svo_module") removed
calls to module_put_and_kthread_exit() from threads that acted as SUNRPC
servers and had a related svc_serv_ops structure. This was correct.
It ALSO removed the module_put_and_kthread_exit() call from
nfs4_run_state_manager() which is NOT a SUNRPC service.
Consequently every time the NFSv4 state manager runs the module count
increments and won't be decremented. So the nfsv4 module cannot be
unloaded.
So restore the module_put_and_kthread_exit() call.

If we're about to send the first layoutget for an empty layout, we want
to make sure that we drain out the existing pending layoutget calls
first. The reason is that these layouts may have been already implicitly
returned to the server by a recall to which the client gave a
NFS4ERR_NOMATCHING_LAYOUT response.
The problem is that wait_var_event_killable() could in principle see the
plh_outstanding count go back to '1' when the first process to wake up
starts sending a new layoutget. If it fails to get a layout, then this
loop can continue ad infinitum...

NFSv4 can lose locks if, for example there is a network partition for
longer than the lease period. When this happens a warning message
NFS: __nfs4_reclaim_open_state: Lock reclaim failed!
is generated, possibly once for each lock (though rate limited).
This is potentially misleading as is can be read as suggesting that lock
reclaim was attempted. However the default behaviour is to not attempt
to recover locks (except due to server report).
This patch changes the reporting to produce at most one message for each
attempt to recover all state from a given server. The message reports
the server name and the number of locks lost if that number is non-zero.
It reports that locks were lost and give no suggestion as to whether
there was an attempt or not.

Any errors reported by the write() system call need to be cleared from
the file descriptor's error tracking. The current call to nfs_wb_all()
causes the error to be reported, but since it doesn't call
file_check_and_advance_wb_err(), we can end up reporting the same error
a second time when the application calls fsync().
Note that since Linux 4.13, the rule is that EIO may be reported for
write(), but it must be reported by a subsequent fsync(), so let's just
drop reporting it in write.
The check for nfs_ctx_key_to_expire() is just a duplicate to the one
already in nfs_write_end(), so let's drop that too.

Currently various places test if direct IO is possible on a file by
checking for the existence of the direct_IO address space operation.
This is a poor choice, as the direct_IO operation may not be used - it is
only used if the generic_file_*_iter functions are called for direct IO
and some filesystems - particularly NFS - don't do this.
Instead, introduce a new f_mode flag: FMODE_CAN_ODIRECT and change the
various places to check this (avoiding pointer dereferences).
do_dentry_open() will set this flag if ->direct_IO is present, so
filesystems do not need to be changed.
NFS *is* changed, to set the flag explicitly and discard the direct_IO
entry in the address_space_operations for files.
Other filesystems which currently use noop_direct_IO could usefully be
changed to set this flag instead.

swap currently uses ->readpage to read swap pages. This can only request
one page at a time from the filesystem, which is not most efficient.
swap uses ->direct_IO for writes which while this is adequate is an
inappropriate over-loading. ->direct_IO may need to had handle allocate
space for holes or other details that are not relevant for swap.
So this patch introduces a new address_space operation: ->swap_rw. In
this patch it is used for reads, and a subsequent patch will switch writes
to use it.
No filesystem yet supports ->swap_rw, but that is not a problem because
no filesystem actually works with filesystem-based swap.
Only two filesystems set SWP_FS_OPS:
- cifs sets the flag, but ->direct_IO always fails so swap cannot work.
- nfs sets the flag, but ->direct_IO calls generic_write_checks()
which has failed on swap files for several releases.
To ensure that a NULL ->swap_rw isn't called, ->activate_swap() for both
NFS and cifs are changed to fail if ->swap_rw is not set. This can be
removed if/when the function is added.
Future patches will restore swap-over-NFS functionality.
To submit an async read with ->swap_rw() we need to allocate a structure
to hold the kiocb and other details. swap_readpage() cannot handle
transient failure, so we create a mempool to provide the structures.

If a filesystem wishes to handle all swap IO itself (via ->direct_IO and
->readpage), rather than just providing devices addresses for
submit_bio(), SWP_FS_OPS must be set.
Currently the protocol for setting this it to have ->swap_activate return
zero. In that case SWP_FS_OPS is set, and add_swap_extent() is called for
the entire file.
This is a little clumsy as different return values for ->swap_activate
have quite different meanings, and it makes it hard to search for which
filesystems require SWP_FS_OPS to be set.
So remove the special meaning of a zero return, and require the filesystem
to set SWP_FS_OPS if it so desires, and to always call add_swap_extent()
as required.
Currently only NFS and CIFS return zero for add_swap_extent().

By making filler_t the same as read_folio, we can use the same function
for both in gfs2. We can push the use of folios down one more level
in jffs2 and nfs. We also increase type safety for future users of the
various read_cache_page() family of functions by forcing the parameter
to be a pointer to struct file (or NULL).

There is no need to declare attributes such as the ctime, mtime and
block size invalid when we're just returning a delegation, so it is
inappropriate to call nfs_post_op_update_inode_force_wcc().
Instead, just call nfs_refresh_inode() after faking up the change

Merge tag 'netfs-prep-20220318' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-fs
Pull netfs updates from David Howells:
"Netfs prep for write helpers.
Having had a go at implementing write helpers and content encryption
support in netfslib, it seems that the netfs_read_{,sub}request
structs and the equivalent write request structs were almost the same
and so should be merged, thereby requiring only one set of
alloc/get/put functions and a common set of tracepoints.
Merging the structs also has the advantage that if a bounce buffer is
added to the request struct, a read operation can be performed to fill
the bounce buffer, the contents of the buffer can be modified and then
a write operation can be performed on it to send the data wherever it
needs to go using the same request structure all the way through. The
I/O handlers would then transparently perform any required crypto.
This should make it easier to perform RMW cycles if needed.
The potentially common functions and structs, however, by their names
all proclaim themselves to be associated with the read side of things.
The bulk of these changes alter this in the following ways:
- Rename struct netfs_read_{,sub}request to netfs_io_{,sub}request.
- Rename some enums, members and flags to make them more appropriate.
- Adjust some comments to match.
- Drop "read"/"rreq" from the names of common functions. For
instance, netfs_get_read_request() becomes netfs_get_request().
- The ->init_rreq() and ->issue_op() methods become ->init_request()
and ->issue_read(). I've kept the latter as a read-specific
function and in another branch added an ->issue_write() method.
The driver source is then reorganised into a number of files:
fs/netfs/buffered_read.c Create read reqs to the pagecache
fs/netfs/io.c Dispatchers for read and write reqs
fs/netfs/main.c Some general miscellaneous bits
fs/netfs/objects.c Alloc, get and put functions
fs/netfs/stats.c Optional procfs statistics.
and future development can be fitted into this scheme, e.g.:
fs/netfs/buffered_write.c Modify the pagecache
fs/netfs/buffered_flush.c Writeback from the pagecache
fs/netfs/direct_read.c DIO read support
fs/netfs/direct_write.c DIO write support
fs/netfs/unbuffered_write.c Write modifications directly back
Beyond the above changes, there are also some changes that affect how
things work:
- Make fscache_end_operation() generally available.
- In the netfs tracing header, generate enums from the symbol ->
string mapping tables rather than manually coding them.
- Add a struct for filesystems that uses netfslib to put into their
inode wrapper structs to hold extra state that netfslib is
interested in, such as the fscache cookie. This allows netfslib
functions to be set in filesystem operation tables and jumped to
directly without having to have a filesystem wrapper.
- Add a member to the struct added above to track the remote inode
length as that may differ if local modifications are buffered. We
may need to supply an appropriate EOF pointer when storing data (in
AFS for example).
- Pass extra information to netfs_alloc_request() so that the
->init_request() hook can access it and retain information to
indicate the origin of the operation.
- Make the ->init_request() hook return an error, thereby allowing a
filesystem that isn't allowed to cache an inode (ceph or cifs, for
example) to skip readahead.
- Switch to using refcount_t for subrequests and add tracepoints to
log refcount changes for the request and subrequest structs.
- Add a function to consolidate dispatching a read request. Similar
code is used in three places and another couple are likely to be
added in the future"

In nfs4_callback_devicenotify(), if we don't find a matching entry for
the deviceid, we're left with a pointer to 'struct nfs_server' that
actually points to the list of super blocks associated with our struct
nfs_client.
Furthermore, even if we have a valid pointer, nothing pins the super
block, and so the struct nfs_server could end up getting freed while
we're using it.
Since all we want is a pointer to the struct pnfs_layoutdriver_type,
let's skip all the iteration over super blocks, and just use APIs to
find the layout driver directly.

To move the list iterator variable into the list_for_each_entry_*()
macro in the future it should be avoided to use the list iterator
variable after the loop body.
To *never* use the list iterator variable after the loop it was
concluded to use a separate iterator variable instead of a
found boolean [1].
This removes the need to use a found variable and simply checking if
the variable was set, can determine if the break/goto was hit.

Primarily this series converts some of the address_space operations
to take a folio instead of a page.
->is_partially_uptodate() takes a folio instead of a page and changes the
type of the 'from' and 'count' arguments to make it obvious they're bytes.
->invalidatepage() becomes ->invalidate_folio() and has a similar type change.
->launder_page() becomes ->launder_folio()
->set_page_dirty() becomes ->dirty_folio() and adds the address_space as
an argument.
There are a couple of other misc changes up front that weren't worth

The bdi congestion tracking in not widely used and will be removed.
NFS is one of a small number of filesystems that uses it, setting just
the async (write) congestion flag at what it determines are appropriate
times.
The only remaining effect of the async flag is to cause (some)
WB_SYNC_NONE writes to be skipped.
So instead of setting the flag, set an internal flag and change:
- .writepages to do nothing if WB_SYNC_NONE and the flag is set
- .writepage to return AOP_WRITEPAGE_ACTIVATE if WB_SYNC_NONE and the
flag is set.
The writepages change causes a behavioural change in that pageout() can
now return PAGE_ACTIVATE instead of PAGE_KEEP, so SetPageActive() will be
called on the page which (I think) wil further delay the next attempt at
writeout. This might be a good thing.

The commit handling code is not safe against memory-pressure deadlocks
when writing to swap. In particular, nfs_commitdata_alloc() blocks
indefinitely waiting for memory, and this can consume all available
workqueue threads.
swap-out most likely uses STABLE writes anyway as COND_STABLE indicates
that a stable write should be used if the write fits in a single
request, and it normally does. However if we ever swap with a small
wsize, or gather unusually large numbers of pages for a single write,
this might change.
For safety, make it explicit in the code that direct writes used for swap
must always use FLUSH_STABLE.

1/ Taking the i_rwsem for swap IO triggers lockdep warnings regarding
possible deadlocks with "fs_reclaim". These deadlocks could, I believe,
eventuate if a buffered read on the swapfile was attempted.
We don't need coherence with the page cache for a swap file, and
buffered writes are forbidden anyway. There is no other need for
i_rwsem during direct IO. So never take it for swap_rw()
2/ generic_write_checks() explicitly forbids writes to swap, and
performs checks that are not needed for swap. So bypass it
for swap_rw().

rpc tasks can be marked as RPC_TASK_SWAPPER. This causes GFP_MEMALLOC
to be used for some allocations. This is needed in some cases, but not
in all where it is currently provided, and in some where it isn't
provided.
Currently *all* tasks associated with a rpc_client on which swap is
enabled get the flag and hence some GFP_MEMALLOC support.
GFP_MEMALLOC is provided for ->buf_alloc() but only swap-writes need it.
However xdr_alloc_bvec does not get GFP_MEMALLOC - though it often does
need it.
xdr_alloc_bvec is called while the XPRT_LOCK is held. If this blocks,
then it blocks all other queued tasks. So this allocation needs
GFP_MEMALLOC for *all* requests, not just writes, when the xprt is used
for any swap writes.
Similarly, if the transport is not connected, that will block all
requests including swap writes, so memory allocations should get
GFP_MEMALLOC if swap writes are possible.
So with this patch:
1/ we ONLY set RPC_TASK_SWAPPER for swap writes.
2/ __rpc_execute() sets PF_MEMALLOC while handling any task
with RPC_TASK_SWAPPER set, or when handling any task that
holds the XPRT_LOCKED lock on an xprt used for swap.
This removes the need for the RPC_IS_SWAPPER() test
in ->buf_alloc handlers.
3/ xprt_prepare_transmit() sets PF_MEMALLOC after locking
any task to a swapper xprt. __rpc_execute() will clear it.
3/ PF_MEMALLOC is set for all the connect workers.

NFS_RPC_SWAPFLAGS is only used for READ requests.
It sets RPC_TASK_SWAPPER which gives some memory-allocation priority to
requests. This is not needed for swap READ - though it is for writes
where it is set via a different mechanism.
RPC_TASK_ROOTCREDS causes the 'machine' credential to be used.
This is not needed as the root credential is saved when the swap file is
opened, and this is used for all IO.
So NFS_RPC_SWAPFLAGS isn't needed, and as it is the only user of
RPC_TASK_ROOTCREDS, that isn't needed either.

Instead of using a linear index to address the pages, use the cookie of
the first entry, since that is what we use to match the page anyway.
This allows us to avoid re-reading the entire cache on a seekdir() type
of operation. The latter is very common when re-exporting NFS, and is a
major performance drain.
The change does affect our duplicate cookie detection, since we can no
longer rely on the page index as a linear offset for detecting whether
we looped backwards. However since we no longer do a linear search
through all the pages on each call to nfs_readdir(), this is less of a
concern than it was previously.
The other downside is that invalidate_mapping_pages() no longer can use
the page index to avoid clearing pages that have been read. A subsequent
patch will restore the functionality this provides to the 'ls -l'
heuristic.

The heuristic for readdirplus is designed to try to detect 'ls -l' and
similar patterns. It does so by looking for cache hit/miss patterns in
both the attribute cache and in the dcache of the files in a given
directory, and then sets a flag for the readdirplus code to interpret.
The problem with this approach is that a single attribute or dcache miss
can cause the NFS code to force a refresh of the attributes for the
entire set of files contained in the directory.
To be able to make a more nuanced decision, let's sample the number of
hits and misses in the set of open directory descriptors. That allows us
to set thresholds at which we start preferring READDIRPLUS over regular
READDIR, or at which we start to force a re-read of the remaining
readdir cache using READDIRPLUS.

The current NFS readdir code will always try to maximise the amount of
readahead it performs on the assumption that we can cache anything that

There are several cases where this assumption breaks down, including
when the 'ls -l' heuristic kicks in to try to force use of readdirplus

This patch therefore tries to tone down the amount of readahead we

reason, then make sure we can re-create it on the next call to readdir.
This, combined with the cache page validation, allows us to reuse the
cached value of page-index on successive calls to nfs_readdir.
Credit is due to Benjamin Coddington for showing that the concept works,
and that it allows for improved cache sharing between processes even in
the case where pages are lost due to LRU or active invalidation.

We have never been able to track down and address the underlying
cause of the performance issues with workqueue-based service
support. svo_enqueue_xprt is called multiple times per RPC, so
it adds instruction path length, but always ends up at the same
function: svc_xprt_do_enqueue(). We do not anticipate needing
this flexibility for dynamic nfsd thread management support.
As a micro-optimization, remove .svo_enqueue_xprt because
Spectre/Meltdown makes virtual function calls more costly.
This change essentially reverts commit b9e13cdfac ("nfsd/sunrpc:
turn enqueueing a svc_xprt into a svc_serv operation").

The use of mapping_set_error() in conjunction with calls to
filemap_check_errors() is problematic because every error gets reported
as either an EIO or an ENOSPC by filemap_check_errors() in functions

The reference counting issue happens in two error paths in the
function _nfs42_proc_copy_notify(). In both error paths, the function
simply returns the error code and forgets to balance the refcount of
object `ctx`, bumped by get_nfs_open_context() earlier, which may
cause refcount leaks.
Fix it by balancing refcount of the `ctx` object before the function
returns in both error paths.

"This set of changes deletes some dead code, makes a lot of cleanups
which hopefully make the code easier to follow, and fixes bugs found
along the way.
The end-game which I have not yet reached yet is for fatal signals
that generate coredumps to be short-circuit deliverable from
complete_signal, for force_siginfo_to_task not to require changing
userspace configured signal delivery state, and for the ptrace stops
to always happen in locations where we can guarantee on all
architectures that the all of the registers are saved and available on
the stack.
Removal of profile_task_ext, profile_munmap, and profile_handoff_task
are the big successes for dead code removal this round.
A bunch of small bug fixes are included, as most of the issues
reported were small enough that they would not affect bisection so I
simply added the fixes and did not fold the fixes into the changes
they were fixing.
There was a bug that broke coredumps piped to systemd-coredump. I
dropped the change that caused that bug and replaced it entirely with
something much more restrained. Unfortunately that required some
rebasing.
Some successes after this set of changes: There are few enough calls
to do_exit to audit in a reasonable amount of time. The lifetime of
struct kthread now matches the lifetime of struct task, and the
pointer to struct kthread is no longer stored in set_child_tid. The
flag SIGNAL_GROUP_COREDUMP is removed. The field group_exit_task is
removed. Issues where task->exit_code was examined with
signal->group_exit_code should been examined were fixed.
There are several loosely related changes included because I am
cleaning up and if I don't include them they will probably get lost.

Merge tag 'fscache-rewrite-20220111' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/dhowells/linux-fs
Pull fscache rewrite from David Howells:
"This is a set of patches that rewrites the fscache driver and the
cachefiles driver, significantly simplifying the code compared to
what's upstream, removing the complex operation scheduling and object
state machine in favour of something much smaller and simpler.
The series is structured such that the first few patches disable
fscache use by the network filesystems using it, remove the cachefiles
driver entirely and as much of the fscache driver as can be got away
with without causing build failures in the network filesystems.
The patches after that recreate fscache and then cachefiles,
attempting to add the pieces in a logical order. Finally, the
filesystems are reenabled and then the very last patch changes the
documentation.
[!] Note: I have dropped the cifs patch for the moment, leaving local
caching in cifs disabled. I've been having trouble getting that
working. I think I have it done, but it needs more testing (there
seem to be some test failures occurring with v5.16 also from
xfstests), so I propose deferring that patch to the end of the
merge window.
WHY REWRITE?
============
Fscache's operation scheduling API was intended to handle sequencing
of cache operations, which were all required (where possible) to run
asynchronously in parallel with the operations being done by the
network filesystem, whilst allowing the cache to be brought online and
offline and to interrupt service for invalidation.
With the advent of the tmpfile capacity in the VFS, however, an
opportunity arises to do invalidation much more simply, without having
to wait for I/O that's actually in progress: Cachefiles can simply
create a tmpfile, cut over the file pointer for the backing object
attached to a cookie and abandon the in-progress I/O, dismissing it
upon completion.
Future work here would involve using Omar Sandoval's vfs_link() with
AT_LINK_REPLACE[1] to allow an extant file to be displaced by a new
hard link from a tmpfile as currently I have to unlink the old file
first.
These patches can also simplify the object state handling as I/O
operations to the cache don't all have to be brought to a stop in
order to invalidate a file. To that end, and with an eye on to writing
a new backing cache model in the future, I've taken the opportunity to
simplify the indexing structure.
I've separated the index cookie concept from the file cookie concept
by C type now. The former is now called a "volume cookie" (struct
fscache_volume) and there is a container of file cookies. There are
then just the two levels. All the index cookie levels are collapsed
into a single volume cookie, and this has a single printable string as
a key. For instance, an AFS volume would have a key of something like
"afs,example.com,1000555", combining the filesystem name, cell name
and volume ID. This is freeform, but must not have '/' chars in it.
I've also eliminated all pointers back from fscache into the network
filesystem. This required the duplication of a little bit of data in
the cookie (cookie key, coherency data and file size), but it's not
actually that much. This gets rid of problems with making sure we keep
netfs data structures around so that the cache can access them.
These patches mean that most of the code that was in the drivers
before is simply gone and those drivers are now almost entirely new
code. That being the case, there doesn't seem any particular reason to
try and maintain bisectability across it. Further, there has to be a
point in the middle where things are cut over as there's a single
point everything has to go through (ie. /dev/cachefiles) and it can't
be in use by two drivers at once.
ISSUES YET OUTSTANDING
======================
There are some issues still outstanding, unaddressed by this patchset,
that will need fixing in future patchsets, but that don't stop this
series from being usable:
(1) The cachefiles driver needs to stop using the backing filesystem's
metadata to store information about what parts of the cache are
populated. This is not reliable with modern extent-based
filesystems.
Fixing this is deferred to a separate patchset as it involves
negotiation with the network filesystem and the VM as to how much
data to download to fulfil a read - which brings me on to (2)...
(2) NFS (and CIFS with the dropped patch) do not take account of how
the cache would like I/O to be structured to meet its granularity
requirements. Previously, the cache used page granularity, which
was fine as the network filesystems also dealt in page
granularity, and the backing filesystem (ext4, xfs or whatever)
did whatever it did out of sight. However, we now have folios to
deal with and the cache will now have to store its own metadata to
track its contents.
The change I'm looking at making for cachefiles is to store
content bitmaps in one or more xattrs and making a bit in the map
correspond to something like a 256KiB block. However, the size of
an xattr and the fact that they have to be read/updated in one go
means that I'm looking at covering 1GiB of data per 512-byte map
and storing each map in an xattr. Cachefiles has the potential to
grow into a fully fledged filesystem of its very own if I'm not
careful.
However, I'm also looking at changing things even more radically
and going to a different model of how the cache is arranged and
managed - one that's more akin to the way, say, openafs does
things - which brings me on to (3)...
(3) The way cachefilesd does culling is very inefficient for large
caches and it would be better to move it into the kernel if I can
as cachefilesd has to keep asking the kernel if it can cull a
file. Changing the way the backend works would allow this to be
addressed.
BITS THAT MAY BE CONTROVERSIAL
==============================
There are some bits I've added that may be controversial:
(1) I've provided a flag, S_KERNEL_FILE, that cachefiles uses to check
if a files is already being used by some other kernel service
(e.g. a duplicate cachefiles cache in the same directory) and
reject it if it is. This isn't entirely necessary, but it helps
prevent accidental data corruption.
I don't want to use S_SWAPFILE as that has other effects, but
quite possibly swapon() should set S_KERNEL_FILE too.
Note that it doesn't prevent userspace from interfering, though
perhaps it should. (I have made it prevent a marked directory from
being rmdir-able).
(2) Cachefiles wants to keep the backing file for a cookie open whilst
we might need to write to it from network filesystem writeback.
The problem is that the network filesystem unuses its cookie when
its file is closed, and so we have nothing pinning the cachefiles
file open and it will get closed automatically after a short time
to avoid EMFILE/ENFILE problems.
Reopening the cache file, however, is a problem if this is being
done due to writeback triggered by exit(). Some filesystems will
oops if we try to open a file in that context because they want to
access current->fs or suchlike.
To get around this, I added the following:
(A) An inode flag, I_PINNING_FSCACHE_WB, to be set on a network
filesystem inode to indicate that we have a usage count on the
cookie caching that inode.
(B) A flag in struct writeback_control, unpinned_fscache_wb, that
is set when __writeback_single_inode() clears the last dirty
page from i_pages - at which point it clears
I_PINNING_FSCACHE_WB and sets this flag.
This has to be done here so that clearing I_PINNING_FSCACHE_WB
can be done atomically with the check of PAGECACHE_TAG_DIRTY
that clears I_DIRTY_PAGES.
(C) A function, fscache_set_page_dirty(), which if it is not set,
sets I_PINNING_FSCACHE_WB and calls fscache_use_cookie() to
pin the cache resources.
(D) A function, fscache_unpin_writeback(), to be called by
->write_inode() to unuse the cookie.
(E) A function, fscache_clear_inode_writeback(), to be called when
the inode is evicted, before clear_inode() is called. This
cleans up any lingering I_PINNING_FSCACHE_WB.
The network filesystem can then use these tools to make sure that
fscache_write_to_cache() can write locally modified data to the
cache as well as to the server.
For the future, I'm working on write helpers for netfs lib that
should allow this facility to be removed by keeping track of the
dirty regions separately - but that's incomplete at the moment and
is also going to be affected by folios, one way or another, since
it deals with pages"

In 9p, afs ceph, and nfs, gfpflags_allow_blocking() (which wraps a
test for __GFP_DIRECT_RECLAIM being set) is used to determine if
->releasepage() should wait for the completion of a DIO write to fscache
with something like:
if (folio_test_fscache(folio)) {
if (!gfpflags_allow_blocking(gfp) || !(gfp & __GFP_FS))
return false;
folio_wait_fscache(folio);
}
Instead, current_is_kswapd() should be used instead.
Note that this is based on a patch originally by Zhaoyang Huang[1]. In
addition to extending it to the other network filesystems and putting it on
top of my fscache rewrite, it also needs to include linux/swap.h in a bunch
of places. Can current_is_kswapd() be moved to linux/mm.h?

Change the nfs filesystem to support fscache's indexing rewrite and
reenable caching in nfs.
The following changes have been made:
(1) The fscache_netfs struct is no more, and there's no need to register
the filesystem as a whole.
(2) The session cookie is now an fscache_volume cookie, allocated with
fscache_acquire_volume(). That takes three parameters: a string
representing the "volume" in the index, a string naming the cache to
use (or NULL) and a u64 that conveys coherency metadata for the
volume.
For nfs, I've made it render the volume name string as:
"nfs,<ver>,<family>,<address>,<port>,<fsidH>,<fsidL>*<,param>[,<uniq>]"
(3) The fscache_cookie_def is no more and needed information is passed
directly to fscache_acquire_cookie(). The cache no longer calls back
into the filesystem, but rather metadata changes are indicated at
other times.
fscache_acquire_cookie() is passed the same keying and coherency
information as before.
(4) fscache_enable/disable_cookie() have been removed.
Call fscache_use_cookie() and fscache_unuse_cookie() when a file is
opened or closed to prevent a cache file from being culled and to keep
resources to hand that are needed to do I/O.
If a file is opened for writing, we invalidate it with
FSCACHE_INVAL_DIO_WRITE in lieu of doing writeback to the cache,
thereby making it cease caching until all currently open files are
closed. This should give the same behaviour as the uptream code.
Making the cache store local modifications isn't straightforward for
NFS, so that's left for future patches.
(5) fscache_invalidate() now needs to be given uptodate auxiliary data and
a file size. It also takes a flag to indicate if this was due to a
DIO write.
(6) Call nfs_fscache_invalidate() with FSCACHE_INVAL_DIO_WRITE on a file
to which a DIO write is made.
(7) Call fscache_note_page_release() from nfs_release_page().
(8) Use a killable wait in nfs_vm_page_mkwrite() when waiting for
PG_fscache to be cleared.
(9) The functions to read and write data to/from the cache are stubbed out
pending a conversion to use netfslib.

NFSv4.1 supports an optional lock notification feature which notifies
the client when a lock comes available. (Normally NFSv4 clients just
poll for locks if necessary.) To make that work, we need to request a
blocking lock from the filesystem.
We turned that off for NFS in commit f657f8eef3 ("nfs: don't atempt
blocking locks on nfs reexports") [sic] because it actually blocks the
nfsd thread while waiting for the lock.
Thanks to Vasily Averin for pointing out that NFS isn't the only
filesystem with that problem.
Any filesystem that leaves ->lock NULL will use posix_lock_file(), which
does the right thing. Simplest is just to assume that any filesystem
that defines its own ->lock is not safe to request a blocking lock from.
So, this patch mostly reverts commit f657f8eef3 ("nfs: don't atempt
blocking locks on nfs reexports") [sic] and commit b840be2f00 ("lockd:
don't attempt blocking locks on nfs reexports"), and instead uses a
check of ->lock (Vasily's suggestion) to decide whether to support
blocking lock notifications on a given filesystem. Also add a little
documentation.
Perhaps someday we could add back an export flag later to allow
filesystems with "good" ->lock methods to support blocking lock
notifications.
