ARM: SoC drivers for v6.4
The most notable updates this time are for Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms. The Inline-Crypto-Engine gets a new DT binding and driver. A number of drivers now support additional Snapdragon variants, in particular the rsc, scm, geni, bwm, glink and socinfo, while the llcc (edac) and rpm drivers get notable functionality updates. Updates on other platforms include: - Various updates to the Mediatek mutex and mmsys drivers, including support for the Helio X10 SoC - Support for unidirectional mailbox channels in Arm SCMI firmware - Support for per cpu asynchronous notification in OP-TEE firmware - Minor updates for memory controller drivers. - Minor updates for Renesas, TI, Amlogic, Apple, Broadcom, Tegra, Allwinner, Versatile Express, Canaan, Microchip, Mediatek and i.MX SoC drivers, mainly updating the use of MODULE_LICENSE() macros and obsolete DT driver interfaces. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEiK/NIGsWEZVxh/FrYKtH/8kJUicFAmRGmncACgkQYKtH/8kJ Uif6ghAAw1TiPTJzJLLCNx+txOVFB62WDglv3T1CufjfcWp0Eh0RJSCcsCOPV+/7 UHi4+X4nPAcudeOFMFtslCR8ExLRWY4j7t2ZYo/k+VI3jdB8Qkbr6NAQgAuRdLYX WZ1cV6o76B3bhO2HqSVNVZ8/3Z7OAYw4j9VDD/4AbW+l3GyentlQTjabpJNREvSS 5HzT3ZI33o7M8mM4uYmmEXVrg8sCupbRyL9S7jTiFXRLcfqujclhfezJ4UrJJv7b wxGf+e2YNMqKH6PiKYufzN1TYI2D0YQeB1m56Y9FsAKxgAyHh2xWpsHeyVnaw0jc KaKjRN/H3JDlW/VCMAjQOIShCZdAs02xHnEXxY6pKLMM6i8/FkzzNIxNQwXrx5KH zYESXVd6suOI0eCZT8zkKKLHRT5EJRaliUv5Z+Qp2BBe3vJVZD0JqSlZ7lOznplF lviwL6ydAMr2cfTgfMxbRiYQVDzncFkfnR3t55SC6rYjGt6QWjeS0dDbGHf4WVC4 FDbnST4JaBmi+frh55VooX7EpzIv9wa0/taayaChd9qvXnh22uqaqho1sPYKZ6BI OXduHQ3qojJhKKKK1VJKzN5Ef3OHLQLNrvcc1DsKILrrES4w4LX1C9dmyh2CLXLo q5cX6L1iB1Hx5tujalDYBsHBBmbiT/1tNM2S7pAGigiGy4KEc28= =r6jm -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'soc-drivers-6.4' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/soc/soc Pull ARM SoC driver updates from Arnd Bergmann: "The most notable updates this time are for Qualcomm Snapdragon platforms. Timers and timekeeping updates:
- Improve the VDSO build time checks to cover all dynamic relocations VDSO does not allow dynamic relcations, but the build time check is incomplete and fragile. It's based on architectures specifying the relocation types to search for and does not handle R_*_NONE relocation entries correctly. R_*_NONE relocations are injected by some GNU ld variants if they fail to determine the exact .rel[a]/dyn_size to cover trailing zeros. R_*_NONE relocations must be ignored by dynamic loaders, so they should be ignored in the build time check too. Remove the architecture specific relocation types to check for and validate strictly that no other relocations than R_*_NONE end up in the VSDO .so file. - Prefer signal delivery to the current thread for CLOCK_PROCESS_CPUTIME_ID based posix-timers Such timers prefer to deliver the signal to the main thread of a process even if the context in which the timer expires is the current task. This has the downside that it might wake up an idle thread. As there is no requirement or guarantee that the signal has to be delivered to the main thread, avoid this by preferring the current task if it is part of the thread group which shares sighand. This not only avoids waking idle threads, it also distributes the signal delivery in case of multiple timers firing in the context of different threads close to each other better. - Align the tick period properly (again) For a long time the tick was starting at CLOCK_MONOTONIC zero, which allowed users space applications to either align with the tick or to place a periodic computation so that it does not interfere with the tick. The alignement of the tick period was more by chance than by intention as the tick is set up before a high resolution clocksource is installed, i.e. timekeeping is still tick based and the tick period advances from there. The early enablement of sched_clock() broke this alignement as the time accumulated by sched_clock() is taken into account when timekeeping is initialized. So the base value now(CLOCK_MONOTONIC) is not longer a multiple of tick periods, which breaks applications which relied on that behaviour. Cure this by aligning the tick starting point to the next multiple of tick periods, i.e 1000ms/CONFIG_HZ. - A set of NOHZ fixes and enhancements - Cure the concurrent writer race for idle and IO sleeptime statistics The statitic values which are exposed via /proc/stat are updated from the CPU local idle exit and remotely by cpufreq, but that happens without any form of serialization. As a consequence sleeptimes can be accounted twice or worse. Prevent this by restricting the accumulation writeback to the CPU local idle exit and let the remote access compute the accumulated value. - Protect idle/iowait sleep time with a sequence count Reading idle/iowait sleep time, e.g. from /proc/stat, can race with idle exit updates. As a consequence the readout may result in random and potentially going backwards values. Protect this by a sequence count, which fixes the idle time statistics issue, but cannot fix the iowait time problem because iowait time accounting races with remote wake ups decrementing the remote runqueues nr_iowait counter. The latter is impossible to fix, so the only way to deal with that is to document it properly and to remove the assertion in the selftest which triggers occasionally due to that. - Restructure struct tick_sched for better cache layout - Some small cleanups and a better cache layout for struct tick_sched - Implement the missing timer_wait_running() callback for POSIX CPU timers For unknown reason the introduction of the timer_wait_running() callback missed to fixup posix CPU timers, which went unnoticed for almost four years. While initially only targeted to prevent livelocks between a timer deletion and the timer expiry function on PREEMPT_RT enabled kernels, it turned out that fixing this for mainline is not as trivial as just implementing a stub similar to the hrtimer/timer callbacks. The reason is that for CONFIG_POSIX_CPU_TIMERS_TASK_WORK enabled systems there is a livelock issue independent of RT. CONFIG_POSIX_CPU_TIMERS_TASK_WORK=y moves the expiry of POSIX CPU timers out from hard interrupt context to task work, which is handled before returning to user space or to a VM. The expiry mechanism moves the expired timers to a stack local list head with sighand lock held. Once sighand is dropped the task can be preempted and a task which wants to delete a timer will spin-wait until the expiry task is scheduled back in. In the worst case this will end up in a livelock when the preempting task and the expiry task are pinned on the same CPU. The timer wheel has a timer_wait_running() mechanism for RT, which uses a per CPU timer-base expiry lock which is held by the expiry code and the task waiting for the timer function to complete blocks on that lock. This does not work in the same way for posix CPU timers as there is no timer base and expiry for process wide timers can run on any task belonging to that process, but the concept of waiting on an expiry lock can be used too in a slightly different way. Add a per task mutex to struct posix_cputimers_work, let the expiry task hold it accross the expiry function and let the deleting task which waits for the expiry to complete block on the mutex. In the non-contended case this results in an extra mutex_lock()/unlock() pair on both sides. This avoids spin-waiting on a task which is scheduled out, prevents the livelock and cures the problem for RT and !RT systems. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJHBAABCgAxFiEEQp8+kY+LLUocC4bMphj1TA10mKEFAmRGrj4THHRnbHhAbGlu dXRyb25peC5kZQAKCRCmGPVMDXSYoZhdEAC/lwfDWCnTXHC8ExQQRDIVNyXmDlLb EHB8ZY7Wc4gNZ8UEXEOLOXJHMG9bsbtPGctVewJwRGnXZWKVhpPwQba6kCRycyX0 0J6l5DlvUaGGrpoOzOZwgETRmtIZE9tEArZR8xlfRScYd93a7yLhwIjO8JaV9vKs IQpAQMeJ/ysp6gHrS59qakYfoHU/ERUAu3Tk4GqHUtPtcyz3nX3eTlLWV8LySqs+ 00qr2yc0bQFUFoKzTCxtM8lcEi9ja9SOj1rw28348O+BXE4d0HC12Ie7eU/CDN2Y OAlWYxVjy4LMh24LDrRQKTzoVqx9MXDx2g+09B3t8NK5LgeS+EJIjujDhZF147/H 5y906nplZUKa8BiZW5Rpm/HKH8tFI80T9XWSQCRBeMgTEJyRyRU1yASAwO4xw+dY Dn3tGmFGymcV/72o4ic9JFKQd8cTSxPjEJS3qqzMkEAtyI/zPBmKxj/Tce50OH40 6FSZq1uU21ZQzszwSHISwgFtNr75laUSK4Z1te5OhPOOz+C7O9YqHvqS/1jwhPj2 tMd8X17fRW3UTUBlBj+zqxqiEGBl/Yk2AvKrJIXGUtfWYCtjMJ7ieCf0kZ7NSVJx 9ewubA0gqseMD783YomZsy8LLtMKnhclJeslUOVb1oKs1q/WF1R/k6qjy9vUwYaB nIJuHl8mxSetag== =SVnj -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'timers-core-2023-04-24' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull timers and timekeeping updates from Thomas Gleixner: - Improve the VDSO build time checks to cover all dynamic relocations VDSO does not allow dynamic relocations, but the build time check is incomplete and fragile. Such user workers will run with the same credentials as the userspace process they were created from providing stronger security and accounting guarantees than the traditional override_creds() approach ever could've hoped for. The original work was heavily based and optimzed for the needs of io_uring which was the first user. However, as it quickly turned out the ability to create user workers inherting properties from a userspace process is generally useful. The vhost subsystem currently creates workers using the kthread api. The consequences of using the kthread api are that RLIMITs don't work correctly as they are inherited from khtreadd. This leads to bugs where more workers are created than would be allowed by the RLIMITs of the userspace process in lieu of which workers are created. Problems like this disappear with user workers created from the userspace processes for which they perform the work. In addition, providing this api allows vhost to remove additional complexity. For example, cgroup and mm sharing will just work out of the box with user workers based on the relevant userspace process instead of manually ensuring the correct cgroup and mm contexts are used. So the vhost subsystem should simply be made to use the same mechanism as io_uring. To this end the original mechanism used for create_io_thread() is generalized into user workers: - Introduce PF_USER_WORKER as a generic indicator that a given task is a user worker, i.e., a kernel task that was created from a userspace process. Now a PF_IO_WORKER thread is just a specialized version of PF_USER_WORKER. So io_uring io workers raise both flags. - Make copy_process() available to core kernel code - Extend struct kernel_clone_args with the following bitfields allowing to indicate to copy_process(): - to create a user worker (raise PF_USER_WORKER) - to not inherit any files from the userspace process - to ignore signals After all generic changes are in place the vhost subsystem implements a new dedicated vhost api based on user workers. Finally, vhost is switched to rely on the new api moving it off of kthreads. Thanks to Mike for sticking it out and making it through this rather arduous journey" * tag 'v6.4/kernel.user_worker' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/brauner/linux: vhost: use vhost_tasks for worker threads vhost: move worker thread fields to new struct vhost_task: Allow vhost layer to use copy_process fork: allow kernel code to call copy_process fork: Add kernel_clone_args flag to ignore signals fork: add kernel_clone_args flag to not dup/clone files fork/vm: Move common PF_IO_WORKER behavior to new flag kernel: Make io_thread and kthread bit fields kthread: Pass in the thread's name during creation kernel: Allow a kernel thread's name to be set in copy_process csky: Remove kernel_thread declaration |

Commit volume in documentation is relatively low this time, but there is
still a fair amount going on, including: - Reorganizing the architecture-specific documentation under Documentation/arch. This makes the structure match the source directory and helps to clean up the mess that is the top-level Documentation directory a bit. This work creates the new directory and moves x86 and most of the less-active architectures there. The current plan is to move the rest of the architectures in 6.5, with the patches going through the appropriate subsystem trees. - Some more Spanish translations and maintenance of the Italian translation. - A new "Kernel contribution maturity model" document from Ted. - A new tutorial on quickly building a trimmed kernel from Thorsten. This simplifies things by referring directly to the single selinux_state global variable which should help improve SELinux performance. - Uninline the unlikely portions of avc_has_perm_noaudit() This change was also based on a discussion from the last development cycle, and is heavily based on an initial proof of concept patch from you. The core issue was that avc_has_perm_noaudit() was not able to be inlined, as intended, due to its size. We solved this issue by extracting the less frequently hit portions of avc_has_perm_noaudit() into a separate function, reducing the size of avc_has_perm_noaudit() to the point where the compiler began inlining the function. We also took the opportunity to clean up some ugly RCU locking in the code that became uglier with the change. - Remove the runtime disable functionality After several years of work by the userspace and distro folks, we are finally in a place where we feel comfortable removing the runtime disable functionality which we initially deprecated at the start of 2020. There is plenty of information in the kernel's deprecation (now removal) notice, but the main motivation was to be able to safely mark the LSM hook structures as '__ro_after_init'. LWN also wrote a good summary of the deprecation this morning which offers a more detailed history: https://lwn.net/SubscriberLink/927463/dcfa0d4ed2872f03 - Remove the checkreqprot functionality The original checkreqprot deprecation notice stated that the removal would happen no sooner than June 2021, which means this falls hard into the "better late than never" bucket. The Kconfig and deprecation notice has more detail on this setting, but the basic idea is that we want to ensure that the SELinux policy allows for the memory protections actually applied by the kernel, and not those requested by the process. While we haven't found anyone running a supported distro that is affected by this deprecation/removal, anyone who is affected would only need to update their policy to reflect the reality of their applications' mapping protections. - Minor Makefile improvements Some minor Makefile improvements to correct some dependency issues likely only ever seen by SELinux developers. I expect we will have at least one more tweak to the Makefile during the next merge window, but it didn't quite make the cutoff this time around. * tag 'selinux-pr-20230420' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/pcmoore/selinux: selinux: ensure av_permissions.h is built when needed selinux: fix Makefile dependencies of flask.h selinux: stop returning node from avc_insert() selinux: clean up dead code after removing runtime disable selinux: update the file list in MAINTAINERS selinux: remove the runtime disable functionality selinux: remove the 'checkreqprot' functionality selinux: stop passing selinux_state pointers and their offspring selinux: uninline unlikely parts of avc_has_perm_noaudit() |

MAINTAINERS: qcom: Add reviewer for Qualcomm Chromebooks
Developers on the ChromeOS team generally want to be notified to review changes that affect Chromebook device tree files. While we could individually add developers, the set of developers and the time each one has available to review patches will change over time. Let's try adding a group list as a reviewer and see if that's an effective way to manage things. A few notes: * Though this email address is actually backed by a mailing list, I'm adding it as "R"eviewer and not "L"ist since it's not a publicly readable mailing list and it's intended just to have a few people on it. This also hopefully conveys a little more responisbility for the people that are part of this group. * I've added all sc7180 and sc7280 files here. At the moment I'm not aware of any non-Chromebooks being supported that use these chips. If later something shows up then we can try to narrow down. * I've added "sdm845-cheza" to this list but not the rest of "sdm845". Cheza never shipped but some developers still find the old developer boards useful and thus it continues to get minimal maintenance. Most sdm845 device tree work, however, seems to be for non-Chromebooks. MAINTAINERS: remove the linux-nfc@lists.01.org list
Some MAINTAINERS sections mention to mail patches to the list linux-nfc@lists.01.org. Probably due to changes on Intel's 01.org website and servers, the list server lists.01.org/ml01.01.org is simply gone. Considering emails recorded on lore.kernel.org, only a handful of emails where sent to the linux-nfc@lists.01.org list, and they are usually also sent to the netdev mailing list as well, where they are then picked up. So, there is no big benefit in restoring the linux-nfc elsewhere. Remove all occurrences of the linux-nfc@lists.01.org list in MAINTAINERS. docs: describe how to quickly build a trimmed kernel
Add a text explaining how to quickly build a kernel, as that's something users will often have to do when they want to report an issue or test proposed fixes. This is a huge and frightening task for quite a few users these days, as many rely on pre-compiled kernels and have never built their own. They find help on quite a few websites explaining the process in various ways, but those howtos often omit important details or make things too hard for the 'quickly build just for testing' case that 'localmodconfig' is really useful for. Hence give users something at hand to guide them, as that makes it easier for them to help with testing, debugging, and fixing the kernel. To keep the complexity at bay, the document explicitly focuses on how to compile the kernel on commodity distributions running on commodity hardware. People that deal with less common distributions or hardware will often know their way around already anyway. The text describes a few oddities of Arch and Debian that were found by the author and a few volunteers that tested the described procedure. There are likely more such quirks that need to be covered as well as a few things the author will have missed -- but one has to start somewhere. The document heavily uses anchors and links to them, which makes things slightly harder to read in the source form. But the intended target audience is way more likely to read rendered versions of this text on pages like docs.kernel.org anyway -- and there those anchors and links allow easy jumps to the reference section and back, which makes the document a lot easier to work with for the intended target audience. Aspects relevant for bisection were left out on purpose, as that is a related, but in the end different use case. The rough plan is to have a second document with a similar style to cover bisection. The idea is to reuse a few bits from this document and link quite often to entries in the reference section with the help of the anchors in this text. vhost_task: Allow vhost layer to use copy_process
Qemu will create vhost devices in the kernel which perform network, SCSI, etc IO and management operations from worker threads created by the kthread API. Because the kthread API does a copy_process on the kthreadd thread, the vhost layer has to use kthread_use_mm to access the Qemu thread's memory and cgroup_attach_task_all to add itself to the Qemu thread's cgroups, and it bypasses the RLIMIT_NPROC limit which can result in VMs creating more threads than the admin expected. This patch adds a new struct vhost_task which can be used instead of kthreads. They allow the vhost layer to use copy_process and inherit the userspace process's mm and cgroups, the task is accounted for under the userspace's nproc count and can be seen in its process tree, and other features like namespaces work and are inherited by default. MAINTAINERS: Update s390-iommu driver maintainer information
The s390 DMA API conversion changes currently under review will extend the use of the s390-iommu driver to the DMA API. With s390's mandatory use of an IOMMU this means all DMA for PCI devices will then use the s390-iommu driver. With this in mind and considering my involvement in these changes it makes sense to reflect this increased interdependence in the maintainer structure. Thus add myself as first maintainer and move Gerald to reviewer status. regressions seen in the last few weeks. The fwnode patch broke the build for one driver that isn't always compiled, so I waited over the weekend to be certain no more build issues came up. [Note: I'm looking at the module license patches in here after gregkh questioned them on the list. They're coming into my inbox in dribbles, and I thought they were necessary to fix some build issue but that doesn't seem to be the case so I stopped applying any more. They're still potentially useful because it slightly speeds up builds if we don't need to include module.h for module macros. If you're flat out opposed I'll rewind this branch and send a new pull request. Please let me know.] - Mark the firmware node (fwnode) that matches the compatible in CLK_OF_DECLARE() as initialized to fix a regression on u8500 SoCs after fw_devlink stopped checking parent nodes in of_link_to_phandle() - Remove a couple MODULE_LICENSE macros in non-modules - Update the maintainers file for Microchip clk drivers - Select instead of depend on the REGMAP config to fix Kconfig issues - Use div_u64() for portable 64-bit division in K210 clk driver -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQJFBAABCAAvFiEE9L57QeeUxqYDyoaDrQKIl8bklSUFAmQPqa4RHHNib3lkQGtl cm5lbC5vcmcACgkQrQKIl8bklSVmUhAA3ao4KKdjx1qZ360Vx/MoqOdlxLhiqv0/ SOU3ZrUAYomH6VivwZwZmSWq2i0yJ/CPMtYRYmBUhZqAuscjX94GtsDmr5xkD1Am 4zCIQPsnCB5Y50KVwfliMf6jPl+LATDjrqTRZ+JdC7UpgppftSXUQ9a+nczJbjsF TzqBELaIMgsv79lWO7k0SDgPh2JMRyOtE8TxZz4Bc36qjCLPgPQLPeo6W+JMCcHT 3O+DozjDMBFpQIGlA9A2m/i5GG7o3dtGe41eyE/1CKTVlYPsA1q68aNhnr4bo4B7 PRDvcJWuDwPg/0J5srns4/nFwVXTvm8g9zCoVCHrfnxZt3LCIrclm3SOO0sBJgmt 7XCs6NnUt5TpUQWDdEUH1rUbrZ3YfGfGNAFF1Eteqv36Cxo7r++MgJ4d6IFoB7vd YreEa6/qHGjZaOxPJ1932JIp2D/oeJyJ+Nb3gUQzZYCuTQLiEs46A7WRNpTBJ0Zf yoAjejZTLXeIRGMCjD53ujzuK/cyhNTPapg/tSNPdk3HVLQK5SAnop+S+gqXQ8X/ TDRRyRLZbJU6P2GWcv6TgZS1Up5L6rYVxpmIpFdi4XJKwG7mL+p0LlRqBnQf4mw3 5pot+p8/G+hLyUqCT7ZxUmDceacyA2kjfp1zD/be8RKQu3uUSeAgsfvQPvaqw+bU 5mtYE0EecG4= =EGt2 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'clk-fixes-for-linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/clk/linux Pull clk fixes from Stephen Boyd: "A collection of clk driver fixes, and a couple OF clk patches to fix regressions seen in the last few weeks. qnx6: credit contributor and mark filesystem orphan
Replace the content of the qnx6 README file with the canonical places for such information. Add the credits of the qnx6 contribution to CREDITS, and add an section in MAINTAINERS to mark this filesystem as Orphan, as the domain ontika.net and email address does not resolve to an IP address anymore. MAINTAINERS: remove historic section DEVICE NUMBER REGISTRY
As described in Documentation/admin-guide/devices.rst, the device number registry (or linux device list) is at Documentation/admin-guide/devices.txt and no longer maintained at lanana.org. The devices.txt file is basically community-maintained, and there is no other dedicated maintainer or contact for that file nowadays. Remove the historic section DEVICE NUMBER REGISTRY in MAINTAINERS. Documentation/process: Add Linux Kernel Contribution Maturity Model
As a follow-up to a discussion at the 2021 Maintainer's Summit on the topic of maintainer recruitment and retention, the TAB took on the task of creating a document which to help companies and other organizations to grow in their ability to engage with the Linux Kernel development community, using the Maturity Model[2] framework. The goal is to encourage, in a management-friendly way, companies to allow their engineers to contribute with the upstream Linux Kernel development community, so we can grow the "talent pipeline" for contributors to become respected leaders, and eventually kernel maintainers. Staging driver fixes and removal for 6.3-rc2
Here are 4 small staging driver fixes, and one big staging driver deletion for 6.3-rc2. The fixes are: - rtl8192e driver fixes for where the driver was attempting to execute various programs directly from the disk for unknown reasons - rtl8723bs driver fixes for issues found by Hans in testing The deleted driver is the removal of the r8188eu wireless driver as now in 6.3-rc1 we have a "real" wifi driver for one that includes support for many many more devices than this old driver did. So it's time to remove it as it is no longer needed. The maintainers of this driver all have acked its removal. Many thanks to them over the years for working to clean it up and keep it working while the real driver was being developed. All of these have been in linux-next this week with no reported problems.
