char/agp: introduce asm-generic/agp.h
There are several architectures that duplicate definitions of map_page_into_agp(), unmap_page_from_agp() and flush_agp_cache(). Define those in asm-generic/agp.h and use it instead of duplicated per-architecture headers. Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport (IBM) <rppt@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> |

char/agp: consolidate {alloc,free}_gatt_pages()
There is a copy of alloc_gatt_pages() and free_gatt_pages in several architectures in arch/$ARCH/include/asm/agp.h. All the copies do exactly the same: alias alloc_gatt_pages() to __get_free_pages(GFP_KERNEL) and alias free_gatt_pages() to free_pages(). Define alloc_gatt_pages() and free_gatt_pages() in drivers/char/agp/agp.h and drop per-architecture definitions. kbuild: remove --include-dir MAKEFLAG from top Makefile
I added $(srctree)/ to some included Makefiles in the following commits: - 3204a7fb98a3 ("kbuild: prefix $(srctree)/ to some included Makefiles") - d82856395505 ("kbuild: do not require sub-make for separate output tree builds") They were a preparation for removing --include-dir flag. I have never thought --include-dir useful. Rather, it _is_ harmful. For example, run the following commands: $ make -s ARCH=x86 mrproper defconfig $ make ARCH=arm O=foo dtbs make[1]: Entering directory '/tmp/linux/foo' HOSTCC scripts/basic/fixdep Error: kernelrelease not valid - run 'make prepare' to update it UPD include/config/kernel.release make[1]: Leaving directory '/tmp/linux/foo' The first command configures the source tree for x86. The next command tries to build ARM device trees in the separate foo/ directory - this must stop because the directory foo/ has not been configured yet. However, due to --include-dir=$(abs_srctree), the top Makefile includes the wrong include/config/auto.conf from the source tree and continues building. Kbuild traverses the directory tree, but of course it does not work correctly. The Error message is also pointless - 'make prepare' does not help at all for fixing the issue. This commit fixes more arch Makefile, and finally removes --include-dir from the top Makefile. There are more breakages under drivers/, but I do not volunteer to fix them all. I just moved --include-dir to drivers/Makefile. With this commit, the second command will stop with a sensible message. $ make -s ARCH=x86 mrproper defconfig $ make ARCH=arm O=foo dtbs make[1]: Entering directory '/tmp/linux/foo' SYNC include/config/auto.conf.cmd *** *** The source tree is not clean, please run 'make ARCH=arm mrproper' *** in /tmp/linux *** make[2]: *** [../Makefile:646: outputmakefile] Error 1 /tmp/linux/Makefile:770: include/config/auto.conf.cmd: No such file or directory make[1]: *** [/tmp/linux/Makefile:793: include/config/auto.conf.cmd] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory '/tmp/linux/foo' make: *** [Makefile:226: __sub-make] Error 2 Signed-off-by: Masahiro Yamada <masahiroy@kernel.org> |

efi: Drop minimum EFI version check at boot
We currently pass a minimum major version to the generic EFI helper that checks the system table magic and version, and refuse to boot if the value is lower. The motivation for this check is unknown, and even the code that uses major version 2 as the minimum (ARM, arm64 and RISC-V) should make it past this check without problems, and boot to a point where we have access to a console or some other means to inform the user that the firmware's major revision number made us unhappy. (Revision 2.0 of the UEFI specification was released in January 2006, whereas ARM, arm64 and RISC-V support where added in 2009, 2013 and 2017, respectively, so checking for major version 2 or higher is completely arbitrary) So just drop the check. mm: add vma_alloc_zeroed_movable_folio()

Let's support __HAVE_ARCH_PTE_SWP_EXCLUSIVE by stealing one bit from the type. Generic MM currently only uses 5 bits for the type (MAX_SWAPFILES_SHIFT), so the stolen bit is effectively unused. arch/idle: Change arch_cpu_idle() behavior: always exit with IRQs disabled
Current arch_cpu_idle() is called with IRQs disabled, but will return with IRQs enabled. However, the very first thing the generic code does after calling arch_cpu_idle() is raw_local_irq_disable(). This means that architectures that can idle with IRQs disabled end up doing a pointless 'enable-disable' dance. Therefore, push this IRQ disabling into the idle function, meaning that those architectures can avoid the pointless IRQ state flipping. - Add the call depth tracking mitigation for Retbleed which has
been long in the making. It is a lighterweight software-only fix for Skylake-based cores where enabling IBRS is a big hammer and causes a significant performance impact. What it basically does is, it aligns all kernel functions to 16 bytes boundary and adds a 16-byte padding before the function, objtool collects all functions' locations and when the mitigation gets applied, it patches a call accounting thunk which is used to track the call depth of the stack at any time. When that call depth reaches a magical, microarchitecture-specific value for the Return Stack Buffer, the code stuffs that RSB and avoids its underflow which could otherwise lead to the Intel variant of Retbleed. ACPI: make remove callback of ACPI driver void
For bus-based driver, device removal is implemented as: 1 device_remove()-> 2 bus->remove()-> 3 driver->remove() Driver core needs no inform from callee(bus driver) about the result of remove callback. In that case, commit fc7a6209d571 ("bus: Make remove callback return void") forces bus_type::remove be void-returned. Now we have the situation that both 1 & 2 of calling chain are void-returned, so it does not make much sense for 3(driver->remove) to return non-void to its caller. So the basic idea behind this change is making remove() callback of any bus-based driver to be void-returned. This change, for itself, is for device drivers based on acpi-bus. mm: remove kern_addr_valid() completely
Most architectures (except arm64/x86/sparc) simply return 1 for kern_addr_valid(), which is only used in read_kcore(), and it calls copy_from_kernel_nofault() which could check whether the address is a valid kernel address. So as there is no need for kern_addr_valid(), let's remove it. hugetlb: simplify hugetlb handling in follow_page_mask
During discussions of this series [1], it was suggested that hugetlb handling code in follow_page_mask could be simplified. At the beginning of follow_page_mask, there currently is a call to follow_huge_addr which 'may' handle hugetlb pages. ia64 is the only architecture which provides a follow_huge_addr routine that does not return error. Instead, at each level of the page table a check is made for a hugetlb entry. If a hugetlb entry is found, a call to a routine associated with that entry is made. Currently, there are two checks for hugetlb entries at each page table level. The first check is of the form: if (p?d_huge()) page = follow_huge_p?d(); the second check is of the form: if (is_hugepd()) page = follow_huge_pd(). We can replace these checks, as well as the special handling routines such as follow_huge_p?d() and follow_huge_pd() with a single routine to handle hugetlb vmas. A new routine hugetlb_follow_page_mask is called for hugetlb vmas at the beginning of follow_page_mask. hugetlb_follow_page_mask will use the existing routine huge_pte_offset to walk page tables looking for hugetlb entries. huge_pte_offset can be overwritten by architectures, and already handles special cases such as hugepd entries. arch: Introduce CONFIG_FUNCTION_ALIGNMENT
Generic function-alignment infrastructure. Architectures can select FUNCTION_ALIGNMENT_xxB symbols; the FUNCTION_ALIGNMENT symbol is then set to the largest such selected size, 0 otherwise. From this the -falign-functions compiler argument and __ALIGN macro are set. This incorporates the DEBUG_FORCE_FUNCTION_ALIGN_64B knob and future alignment requirements for x86_64 (later in this series) into a single place. NOTE: also removes the 0x90 filler byte from the generic __ALIGN primitive, that value makes no sense outside of x86. NOTE: .balign 0 reverts to a no-op. TTY/Serial driver update for 6.1-rc1
Here is the big set of TTY and Serial driver updates for 6.1-rc1. Lots of cleanups in here, no real new functionality this time around, with the diffstat being that we removed more lines than we added! Included in here are: - termios unification cleanups from Al Viro, it's nice to finally get this work done - tty serial transmit cleanups in various drivers in preparation for more cleanup and unification in future releases (that work was not ready for this release.) - n_gsm fixes and updates - ktermios cleanups and code reductions - dt bindings json conversions and updates for new devices - some serial driver updates for new devices - lots of other tiny cleanups and janitorial stuff. kbuild: remove head-y syntax
Kbuild puts the objects listed in head-y at the head of vmlinux. Conventionally, we do this for head*.S, which contains the kernel entry point. A counter approach is to control the section order by the linker script. Actually, the code marked as __HEAD goes into the ".head.text" section, which is placed before the normal ".text" section. I do not know if both of them are needed. From the build system perspective, head-y is not mandatory. If you can achieve the proper code placement by the linker script only, it would be cleaner. I collected the current head-y objects into head-object-list.txt. It is a whitelist. My hope is it will be reduced in the long run. kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the head
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. ia64: fix clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC) to report ITC frequency
clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &tp) is very precise on ia64 as it uses ITC (similar to rdtsc on x86). It's not quite a hrtimer as it is a few times slower than 1ns. Usually 2-3ns. clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) never reflected that fact and reported 0.04s precision (1/HZ value). In https://bugs.gentoo.org/596382 gstreamer's test suite failed loudly when it noticed precision discrepancy. Before the change: clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) reported 250Hz precision. After the change: clock_getres(CLOCK_MONOTONIC, &res) reports ITC (400Mhz) precision. The patch is based on matoro's fix. I added a bit of explanation why we need to special-case arch-specific clock_getres(). termios: get rid of non-UAPI asm/termios.h
All non-UAPI asm/termios.h consist of include of UAPI counterpart and, possibly, include of linux/uaccess.h The latter can't be simply removed, even though nothing in linux/termios.h doesn't depend upon it anymore - there are several places that rely upon that indirect chain of includes to pull linux/uaccess.h. So the include needs to be lifted out of there - we lift into tty_driver.h, serdev.h and places that pull asm/termios.h, but none of * linux/uaccess.h (obvious) * net/sock.h (pulls uaccess.h) * linux/{tty,tty_driver,serdev}.h (tty.h pulls tty_driver.h) That leaves us just with the include of UAPI asm/termios.h, which is what <asm/termios.h> will resolve to if we simply remove non-UAPI header. A few things are still pending. Liam's maple tree rework didn't make it. This has resulted in a few other minor patch series being held over for next time. Multi-gen LRU still isn't merged as we were waiting for mapletree to stabilize. The current plan is to merge MGLRU into -mm soon and to later reintroduce mapletree, with a view to hopefully getting both into 6.1-rc1. asm-generic: updates for 6.0
There are three independent sets of changes: - Sai Prakash Ranjan adds tracing support to the asm-generic version of the MMIO accessors, which is intended to help understand problems with device drivers and has been part of Qualcomm's vendor kernels for many years. - A patch from Sebastian Siewior to rework the handling of IRQ stacks in softirqs across architectures, which is needed for enabling PREEMPT_RT. - The last patch to remove the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS option and some of the code behind that, after the last users of this old interface made it in through the netdev, scsi, media and staging trees. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAABCgAdFiEEo6/YBQwIrVS28WGKmmx57+YAGNkFAmLqPPEACgkQmmx57+YA GNlUbQ/+NpIsiA0JUrCGtySt8KrLHdA2dH9lJOR5/iuxfphscPFfWtpcPvcXQWmt a8u7wyI8SHW1ku4U0Y5sO0dBSldDnoIqJ5t4X5d7YNU9yVtEtucqQhZf+GkrPlVD 1HkRu05B7y0k2BMn7BLhSvkpafs3f1lNGXjs8oFBdOF1/zwp/GjcrfCK7KFzqjwU dYrX0SOFlKFd4BZC75VfK+XcKg4LtwIOmJraRRl7alz2Q5Oop2hgjgZxXDPf//vn SPOhXJN/97i1FUpY2TkfHVH1NxbPfjCV4pUnjmLG0Y4NSy9UQ/ZcXHcywIdeuhfa 0LySOIsAqBeccpYYYdg2ubiMDZOXkBfANu/sB9o/EhoHfB4svrbPRDhBIQZMFXJr MJYu+IYce2rvydA/nydo4q++pxR8v1ES1ZIo8bDux+q1CI/zbpQV+f98kPVRA0M7 ajc+5GTIqNIsvHzzadq7eYxcj5Bi8Li2JA9sVkAQ+6iq1TVyeYayMc9eYwONlmqw MD+PFYc651pKtXZCfkLXPIKSwS0uPqBndAibuVhpZ0hxWaCBBdKvY9mrWcPxt0kA tMR8lrosbbrV2K48BFdWTOHvCs2FhHQxPGVPZ/iWuxTA0hHZ9tUlaEkSX+VM57IU KCYQLdWzT8J9vrgqSbgYKlb6pSPz6FIjTfut6NZMmshIbavHV/Q= =aTR0 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- Merge tag 'asm-generic-6.0' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull asm-generic updates from Arnd Bergmann: "There are three independent sets of changes: - Sai Prakash Ranjan adds tracing support to the asm-generic version of the MMIO accessors, which is intended to help understand problems with device drivers and has been part of Qualcomm's vendor kernels for many years - A patch from Sebastian Siewior to rework the handling of IRQ stacks in softirqs across architectures, which is needed for enabling PREEMPT_RT - The last patch to remove the CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS option and some of the code behind that, after the last users of this old interface made it in through the netdev, scsi, media and staging trees" * tag 'asm-generic-6.0' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic: uapi: asm-generic: fcntl: Fix typo 'the the' in comment arch/*/: remove CONFIG_VIRT_TO_BUS soc: qcom: geni: Disable MMIO tracing for GENI SE serial: qcom_geni_serial: Disable MMIO tracing for geni serial asm-generic/io: Add logging support for MMIO accessors KVM: arm64: Add a flag to disable MMIO trace for nVHE KVM lib: Add register read/write tracing support drm/meson: Fix overflow implicit truncation warnings irqchip/tegra: Fix overflow implicit truncation warnings coresight: etm4x: Use asm-generic IO memory barriers arm64: io: Use asm-generic high level MMIO accessors arch/*: Disable softirq stacks on PREEMPT_RT. |
