TTY/Serial driver changes for 6.6-rc1
Here is the big set of tty and serial driver changes for 6.6-rc1. Lots of cleanups in here this cycle, and some driver updates. Short summary is: - Jiri's continued work to make the tty code and apis be a bit more sane with regards to modern kernel coding style and types - cpm_uart driver updates - n_gsm updates and fixes - meson driver updates - sc16is7xx driver updates - 8250 driver updates for different hardware types - qcom-geni driver fixes - tegra serial driver change - stm32 driver updates - synclink_gt driver cleanups - tty structure size reduction All of these have been in linux-next this week with no reported issues. The last bit of cleanups from Jiri and the tty structure size reduction came in last week, a bit late but as they were just style changes and size reductions, I figured they should get into this merge cycle so that others can work on top of them with no merge conflicts. CET consists of two related security features: shadow stacks and indirect branch tracking. This series implements just the shadow stack part of this feature, and just for userspace. The main use case for shadow stack is providing protection against return oriented programming attacks. It works by maintaining a secondary (shadow) stack using a special memory type that has protections against modification. When executing a CALL instruction, the processor pushes the return address to both the normal stack and to the special permission shadow stack. Upon RET, the processor pops the shadow stack copy and compares it to the normal stack copy. sparc: Explicitly include correct DT includes
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it was merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. nmi_backtrace: allow excluding an arbitrary CPU
The APIs that allow backtracing across CPUs have always had a way to exclude the current CPU. This convenience means callers didn't need to find a place to allocate a CPU mask just to handle the common case. Let's extend the API to take a CPU ID to exclude instead of just a boolean. This isn't any more complex for the API to handle and allows the hardlockup detector to exclude a different CPU (the one it already did a trace for) without needing to find space for a CPU mask. Arguably, this new API also encourages safer behavior. Specifically if the caller wants to avoid tracing the current CPU (maybe because they already traced the current CPU) this makes it more obvious to the caller that they need to make sure that the current CPU ID can't change. x86/shstk: Add user control-protection fault handler
A control-protection fault is triggered when a control-flow transfer attempt violates Shadow Stack or Indirect Branch Tracking constraints. For example, the return address for a RET instruction differs from the copy on the shadow stack. There already exists a control-protection fault handler for handling kernel IBT faults. Refactor this fault handler into separate user and kernel handlers, like the page fault handler. Add a control-protection handler for usermode. To avoid ifdeffery, put them both in a new file cet.c, which is compiled in the case of either of the two CET features supported in the kernel: kernel IBT or user mode shadow stack. Move some static inline functions from traps.c into a header so they can be used in cet.c. Opportunistically fix a comment in the kernel IBT part of the fault handler that is on the end of the line instead of preceding it. Keep the same behavior for the kernel side of the fault handler, except for converting a BUG to a WARN in the case of a #CP happening when the feature is missing. This unifies the behavior with the new shadow stack code, and also prevents the kernel from crashing under this situation which is potentially recoverable. The control-protection fault handler works in a similar way as the general protection fault handler. It provides the si_code SEGV_CPERR to the signal handler. tty: sysrq: switch sysrq handlers from int to u8
The passed parameter to sysrq handlers is a key (a character). So change the type from 'int' to 'u8'. Let it specifically be 'u8' for two reasons: * unsigned: unsigned values come from the upper layers (devices) and the tty layer assumes unsigned on most places, and * 8-bit: as that what's supposed to be one day in all the layers built on the top of tty. (Currently, we use mostly 'unsigned char' and somewhere still only 'char'. (But that also translates to the former thanks to -funsigned-char.)) The compiler option '-fstrict-flex-arrays=3' has been enabled globally, and has been in -next for the entire devel cycle. This changes compiler diagnostics (though mainly just -Warray-bounds which is disabled) and potential UBSAN_BOUNDS and FORTIFY _warning_ coverage. In other words, there are no new restrictions, just potentially new warnings. Any new FORTIFY warnings we've seen have been fixed (usually in their respective subsystem trees). For more details, see commit df8fc4e934c12b. The under-development compiler attribute __counted_by has been added so that we can start annotating flexible array members with their associated structure member that tracks the count of flexible array elements at run-time. It is possible (likely?) that the exact syntax of the attribute will change before it is finalized, but GCC and Clang are working together to sort it out. watchdog/hardlockup: HAVE_NMI_WATCHDOG must implement watchdog_hardlockup_probe()
Right now there is one arch (sparc64) that selects HAVE_NMI_WATCHDOG without selecting HAVE_HARDLOCKUP_DETECTOR_ARCH. Because of that one architecture, we have some special case code in the watchdog core to handle the fact that watchdog_hardlockup_probe() isn't implemented. Let's implement watchdog_hardlockup_probe() for sparc64 and get rid of the special case. As a side effect of doing this, code inspection tells us that we could fix a minor bug where the system won't properly realize that NMI watchdogs are disabled. Specifically, on powerpc if CONFIG_PPC_WATCHDOG is turned off the arch might still select CONFIG_HAVE_HARDLOCKUP_DETECTOR_ARCH which selects CONFIG_HAVE_NMI_WATCHDOG. Since CONFIG_PPC_WATCHDOG was off then nothing will override the "weak" watchdog_hardlockup_probe() and we'll fallback to looking at CONFIG_HAVE_NMI_WATCHDOG. sparc64: Replace all non-returning strlcpy with strscpy
strlcpy() reads the entire source buffer first. This read may exceed the destination size limit. This is both inefficient and can lead to linear read overflows if a source string is not NUL-terminated [1]. In an effort to remove strlcpy() completely [2], replace strlcpy() here with strscpy(). No return values were used, so direct replacement is safe. watchdog/hardlockup: rename some "NMI watchdog" constants/function

This is specifically to make it less confusing when we want to introduce the buddy hardlockup detector, which isn't using NMIs. As part of this, we sanitized a few names for consistency. sched/idle: Mark arch_cpu_idle_dead() __noreturn
Before commit 076cbf5d2163 ("x86/xen: don't let xen_pv_play_dead() return"), in Xen, when a previously offlined CPU was brought back online, it unexpectedly resumed execution where it left off in the middle of the idle loop. There were some hacks to make that work, but the behavior was surprising as do_idle() doesn't expect an offlined CPU to return from the dead (in arch_cpu_idle_dead()). Now that Xen has been fixed, and the arch-specific implementations of arch_cpu_idle_dead() also don't return, give it a __noreturn attribute. This will cause the compiler to complain if an arch-specific implementation might return. It also improves code generation for both caller and callee. Also fixes the following warning: vmlinux.o: warning: objtool: do_idle+0x25f: unreachable instruction Reported-by: Paul E. McKenney <paulmck@kernel.org> Tested-by: Paul E. Driver core changes for 6.3-rc1
Here is the large set of driver core changes for 6.3-rc1. There's a lot of changes this development cycle, most of the work falls into two different categories: - fw_devlink fixes and updates. This has gone through numerous review cycles and lots of review and testing by lots of different devices. Hopefully all should be good now, and Saravana will be keeping a watch for any potential regression on odd embedded systems. - driver core changes to work to make struct bus_type able to be moved into read-only memory (i.e. const) The recent work with Rust has pointed out a number of areas in the driver core where we are passing around and working with structures that really do not have to be dynamic at all, and they should be able to be read-only making things safer overall. This is the contuation of that work (started last release with kobject changes) in moving struct bus_type to be constant. We didn't quite make it for this release, but the remaining patches will be finished up for the release after this one, but the groundwork has been laid for this effort. Other than that we have in here: - debugfs memory leak fixes in some subsystems - error path cleanups and fixes for some never-able-to-be-hit codepaths. - cacheinfo rework and fixes - Other tiny fixes, full details are in the shortlog All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported problems. arch/idle: Change arch_cpu_idle() behavior: always exit with IRQs disabled
Current arch_cpu_idle() is called with IRQs disabled, but will return with IRQs enabled. However, the very first thing the generic code does after calling arch_cpu_idle() is raw_local_irq_disable(). This means that architectures that can idle with IRQs disabled end up doing a pointless 'enable-disable' dance. Therefore, push this IRQ disabling into the idle function, meaning that those architectures can avoid the pointless IRQ state flipping. TTY/Serial driver update for 6.1-rc1
Here is the big set of TTY and Serial driver updates for 6.1-rc1. Lots of cleanups in here, no real new functionality this time around, with the diffstat being that we removed more lines than we added! Included in here are: - termios unification cleanups from Al Viro, it's nice to finally get this work done - tty serial transmit cleanups in various drivers in preparation for more cleanup and unification in future releases (that work was not ready for this release.) - n_gsm fixes and updates - ktermios cleanups and code reductions - dt bindings json conversions and updates for new devices - some serial driver updates for new devices - lots of other tiny cleanups and janitorial stuff. Full details in the shortlog. All of these have been in linux-next for a while with no reported issues. The most notable new feature here is the addition of the memcpy() overflow warning (under CONFIG_FORTIFY_SOURCE), which is the next step on the path to killing the common class of "trivially detectable" buffer overflow conditions (i.e. on arrays with sizes known at compile time) that have resulted in many exploitable vulnerabilities over the years (e.g. BleedingTooth). This feature is expected to still have some undiscovered false positives. It's been in -next for a full development cycle and all the reported false positives have been fixed in their respective trees. All the known-bad code patterns we could find with Coccinelle are also either fixed in their respective trees or in flight. The commit message in commit 54d9469bc515 ("fortify: Add run-time WARN for cross-field memcpy()") for the feature has extensive details, but I'll repeat here that this is a warning _only_, and is not intended to actually block overflows (yet). The many patches fixing array sizes and struct members have been landing for several years now, and we're finally able to turn this on to find any remaining stragglers. kbuild: use obj-y instead extra-y for objects placed at the head
The objects placed at the head of vmlinux need special treatments: - arch/$(SRCARCH)/Makefile adds them to head-y in order to place them before other archives in the linker command line. - arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile adds them to extra-y instead of obj-y to avoid them going into built-in.a. This commit gets rid of the latter. Create vmlinux.a to collect all the objects that are unconditionally linked to vmlinux. The objects listed in head-y are moved to the head of vmlinux.a by using 'ar m'. With this, arch/$(SRCARCH)/kernel/Makefile can consistently use obj-y for builtin objects. There is no *.o that is directly linked to vmlinux. Drop unneeded code in scripts/clang-tools/gen_compile_commands.py. $(AR) mPi needs 'T' to workaround the llvm-ar bug. The fix was suggested by Nathan Chancellor [1]. asm-generic: Conditionally enable do_softirq_own_stack() via Kconfig.
Remove the CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT symbol from the ifdef around do_softirq_own_stack() and move it to Kconfig instead. Enable softirq stacks based on SOFTIRQ_ON_OWN_STACK which depends on HAVE_SOFTIRQ_ON_OWN_STACK and its default value is set to !PREEMPT_RT. This ensures that softirq stacks are not used on PREEMPT_RT and avoids a 'select' statement on an option which has a 'depends' statement.
