Pingfan reported that the following causes a fault:
echo "filename ~ \"cpu\"" > events/syscalls/sys_enter_openat/filter
echo 1 > events/syscalls/sys_enter_at/enable
The reason is that trace event filter treats the user space pointer
defined by "filename" as a normal pointer to compare against the "cpu"
string. The following bug happened:

The above happened because the kernel tried to access user space directly
and triggered a "supervisor read access in kernel mode" fault. Worse yet,
the memory could not even be loaded yet, and a SEGFAULT could happen as
well. This could be true for kernel space accessing as well.
To be even more robust, test both kernel and user space strings. If the
string fails to read, then simply have the filter fail.
Note, TASK_SIZE is used to determine if the pointer is user or kernel space
and the appropriate strncpy_from_kernel/user_nofault() function is used to
copy the memory. For some architectures, the compare to TASK_SIZE may always
pick user space or kernel space. If it gets it wrong, the only thing is that
the filter will fail to match. In the future, this needs to be fixed to have
the event denote which should be used. But failing a filter is much better
than panicing the machine, and that can be solved later.

Currently the histogram logic allows the user to write "cpu" in as an
event field, and it will record the CPU that the event happened on.
The problem with this is that there's a lot of events that have "cpu"
as a real field, and using "cpu" as the CPU it ran on, makes it
impossible to run histograms on the "cpu" field of events.
For example, if I want to have a histogram on the count of the
workqueue_queue_work event on its cpu field, running:
># echo 'hist:keys=cpu' > events/workqueue/workqueue_queue_work/trigger
Gives a misleading and wrong result.
Change the command to "common_cpu" as no event should have "common_*"
fields as that's a reserved name for fields used by all events. And
this makes sense here as common_cpu would be a field used by all events.
Now we can even do:
># echo 'hist:keys=common_cpu,cpu if cpu < 100' > events/workqueue/workqueue_queue_work/trigger
># cat events/workqueue/workqueue_queue_work/hist
# event histogram
#
# trigger info: hist:keys=common_cpu,cpu:vals=hitcount:sort=hitcount:size=2048 if cpu < 100 [active]
#
{ common_cpu: 0, cpu: 2 } hitcount: 1
{ common_cpu: 0, cpu: 4 } hitcount: 1
{ common_cpu: 7, cpu: 7 } hitcount: 1
{ common_cpu: 0, cpu: 7 } hitcount: 1
{ common_cpu: 0, cpu: 1 } hitcount: 1
{ common_cpu: 0, cpu: 6 } hitcount: 2
{ common_cpu: 0, cpu: 5 } hitcount: 2
{ common_cpu: 1, cpu: 1 } hitcount: 4
{ common_cpu: 6, cpu: 6 } hitcount: 4
{ common_cpu: 5, cpu: 5 } hitcount: 14
{ common_cpu: 4, cpu: 4 } hitcount: 26
{ common_cpu: 0, cpu: 0 } hitcount: 39
{ common_cpu: 2, cpu: 2 } hitcount: 184
Now for backward compatibility, I added a trick. If "cpu" is used, and
the field is not found, it will fall back to "common_cpu" and work as
it did before. This way, it will still work for old programs that use
"cpu" to get the actual CPU, but if the event has a "cpu" as a field, it
will get that event's "cpu" field, which is probably what it wants
anyway.
I updated the tracefs/README to include documentation about both the
common_timestamp and the common_cpu. This way, if that text is present in
the README, then an application can know that common_cpu is supported over
just plain "cpu".

The timerlat tracer aims to help the preemptive kernel developers to
found souces of wakeup latencies of real-time threads. Like cyclictest,
the tracer sets a periodic timer that wakes up a thread. The thread then
computes a *wakeup latency* value as the difference between the *current
time* and the *absolute time* that the timer was set to expire. The main
goal of timerlat is tracing in such a way to help kernel developers.
Usage
Write the ASCII text "timerlat" into the current_tracer file of the
tracing system (generally mounted at /sys/kernel/tracing).
For example:
[root@f32 ~]# cd /sys/kernel/tracing/
[root@f32 tracing]# echo timerlat > current_tracer
It is possible to follow the trace by reading the trace trace file:
[root@f32 tracing]# cat trace
# tracer: timerlat

# / _----=> need-resched
# | / _---=> hardirq/softirq

<...>-868 [001] .... 54.030347: #2 context thread timer_latency 4351 ns
The tracer creates a per-cpu kernel thread with real-time priority that
prints two lines at every activation. The first is the *timer latency*
observed at the *hardirq* context before the activation of the thread.
The second is the *timer latency* observed by the thread, which is the
same level that cyclictest reports. The ACTIVATION ID field
serves to relate the *irq* execution to its respective *thread* execution.
The irq/thread splitting is important to clarify at which context
the unexpected high value is coming from. The *irq* context can be
delayed by hardware related actions, such as SMIs, NMIs, IRQs
or by a thread masking interrupts. Once the timer happens, the delay
can also be influenced by blocking caused by threads. For example, by
postponing the scheduler execution via preempt_disable(), by the
scheduler execution, or by masking interrupts. Threads can
also be delayed by the interference from other threads and IRQs.
The timerlat can also take advantage of the osnoise: traceevents.
For example:
[root@f32 ~]# cd /sys/kernel/tracing/
[root@f32 tracing]# echo timerlat > current_tracer
[root@f32 tracing]# echo osnoise > set_event
[root@f32 tracing]# echo 25 > osnoise/stop_tracing_total_us

In the context of high-performance computing (HPC), the Operating System
Noise (*osnoise*) refers to the interference experienced by an application
due to activities inside the operating system. In the context of Linux,
NMIs, IRQs, SoftIRQs, and any other system thread can cause noise to the
system. Moreover, hardware-related jobs can also cause noise, for example,
via SMIs.
The osnoise tracer leverages the hwlat_detector by running a similar
loop with preemption, SoftIRQs and IRQs enabled, thus allowing all
the sources of *osnoise* during its execution. Using the same approach
of hwlat, osnoise takes note of the entry and exit point of any
source of interferences, increasing a per-cpu interference counter. The
osnoise tracer also saves an interference counter for each source of
interference. The interference counter for NMI, IRQs, SoftIRQs, and
threads is increased anytime the tool observes these interferences' entry
events. When a noise happens without any interference from the operating
system level, the hardware noise counter increases, pointing to a
hardware-related noise. In this way, osnoise can account for any
source of interference. At the end of the period, the osnoise tracer
prints the sum of all noise, the max single noise, the percentage of CPU
available for the thread, and the counters for the noise sources.
Usage
Write the ASCII text "osnoise" into the current_tracer file of the
tracing system (generally mounted at /sys/kernel/tracing).
For example::
[root@f32 ~]# cd /sys/kernel/tracing/
[root@f32 tracing]# echo osnoise > current_tracer
It is possible to follow the trace by reading the trace trace file::
[root@f32 tracing]# cat trace

In addition to the regular trace fields (from TASK-PID to TIMESTAMP), the
tracer prints a message at the end of each period for each CPU that is
running an osnoise/CPU thread. The osnoise specific fields report:
- The RUNTIME IN USE reports the amount of time in microseconds that
the osnoise thread kept looping reading the time.
- The NOISE IN US reports the sum of noise in microseconds observed
by the osnoise tracer during the associated runtime.
- The % OF CPU AVAILABLE reports the percentage of CPU available for
the osnoise thread during the runtime window.
- The MAX SINGLE NOISE IN US reports the maximum single noise observed
during the runtime window.
- The Interference counters display how many each of the respective
interference happened during the runtime window.
Note that the example above shows a high number of HW noise samples.
The reason being is that this sample was taken on a virtual machine,
and the host interference is detected as a hardware interference.
Tracer options
The tracer has a set of options inside the osnoise directory, they are:
- osnoise/cpus: CPUs at which a osnoise thread will execute.
- osnoise/period_us: the period of the osnoise thread.
- osnoise/runtime_us: how long an osnoise thread will look for noise.
- osnoise/stop_tracing_us: stop the system tracing if a single noise
higher than the configured value happens. Writing 0 disables this
option.
- osnoise/stop_tracing_total_us: stop the system tracing if total noise
higher than the configured value happens. Writing 0 disables this
option.
- tracing_threshold: the minimum delta between two time() reads to be
considered as noise, in us. When set to 0, the default value will
be used, which is currently 5 us.
Additional Tracing
In addition to the tracer, a set of tracepoints were added to
facilitate the identification of the osnoise source.
- osnoise:sample_threshold: printed anytime a noise is higher than
the configurable tolerance_ns.
- osnoise:nmi_noise: noise from NMI, including the duration.
- osnoise:irq_noise: noise from an IRQ, including the duration.
- osnoise:softirq_noise: noise from a SoftIRQ, including the
duration.
- osnoise:thread_noise: noise from a thread, including the duration.
Note that all the values are *net values*. For example, if while osnoise
is running, another thread preempts the osnoise thread, it will start a
thread_noise duration at the start. Then, an IRQ takes place, preempting
the thread_noise, starting a irq_noise. When the IRQ ends its execution,
it will compute its duration, and this duration will be subtracted from
the thread_noise, in such a way as to avoid the double accounting of the
IRQ execution. This logic is valid for all sources of noise.
Here is one example of the usage of these tracepoints::
osnoise/8-961 [008] d.h. 5789.857532: irq_noise: local_timer:236 start 5789.857529929 duration 1845 ns
osnoise/8-961 [008] dNh. 5789.858408: irq_noise: local_timer:236 start 5789.858404871 duration 2848 ns
migration/8-54 [008] d... 5789.858413: thread_noise: migration/8:54 start 5789.858409300 duration 3068 ns
osnoise/8-961 [008] .... 5789.858413: sample_threshold: start 5789.858404555 duration 8723 ns interferences 2
In this example, a noise sample of 8 microseconds was reported in the last
line, pointing to two interferences. Looking backward in the trace, the
two previous entries were about the migration thread running after a
timer IRQ execution. The first event is not part of the noise because
it took place one millisecond before.
It is worth noticing that the sum of the duration reported in the
tracepoints is smaller than eight us reported in the sample_threshold.
The reason roots in the overhead of the entry and exit code that happens
before and after any interference execution. This justifies the dual
approach: measuring thread and tracing.

Implements the per-cpu mode in which a sampling thread is created for
each cpu in the "cpus" (and tracing_mask).
The per-cpu mode has the potention to speed up the hwlat detection by
running on multiple CPUs at the same time, at the cost of higher cpu
usage with irqs disabled. Use with care.

Provides the "mode" config to the hardware latency detector. hwlatd has
two different operation modes. The default mode is the "round-robin" one,
in which a single hwlatd thread runs, migrating among the allowed CPUs in a
"round-robin" fashion. This is the current behavior.
The "none" sets the allowed cpumask for a single hwlatd thread at the
startup, but skips the round-robin, letting the scheduler handle the
migration.
In preparation to the per-cpu mode.

The reason for kprobe::fault_handler(), as given by their comment:
* We come here because instructions in the pre/post
* handler caused the page_fault, this could happen
* if handler tries to access user space by
* copy_from_user(), get_user() etc. Let the
* user-specified handler try to fix it first.
Is just plain bad. Those other handlers are ran from non-preemptible
context and had better use _nofault() functions. Also, there is no
upstream usage of this.

Add tracefs/options/hash-ptr option to show hashed pointer
value by %p in event printk format string.
For the security reason, normal printk will show the hashed
pointer value (encrypted by random number) with %p to printk
buffer to hide the real address. But the tracefs/trace always
shows real address for debug. To bridge those outputs, add an
option to switch the output format. Ftrace users can use it
to find the hashed value corresponding to the real address
in trace log.

gets more complicated.
This patch gives description for the PMU formats of contextID configs,
this can help users to understand how to control the knobs for PID
tracing when the kernel is in different ELs.

The major update to this release is that there's a new arch config option called:
CONFIG_HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS. Currently, only x86_64 enables it.
All the ftrace callbacks now take a struct ftrace_regs instead of a struct
pt_regs. If the architecture has HAVE_DYNAMIC_FTRACE_WITH_ARGS enabled, then
the ftrace_regs will have enough information to read the arguments of the
function being traced, as well as access to the stack pointer. This way, if
a user (like live kernel patching) only cares about the arguments, then it
can avoid using the heavier weight "regs" callback, that puts in enough
information in the struct ftrace_regs to simulate a breakpoint exception
(needed for kprobes).
New config option that audits the timestamps of the ftrace ring buffer at
most every event recorded. The "check_buffer()" calls will conflict with
mainline, because I purposely added the check without including the fix that
it caught, which is in mainline. Running a kernel built from the commit of
the added check will trigger it.
Ftrace recursion protection has been cleaned up to move the protection to
the callback itself (this saves on an extra function call for those
callbacks).
Perf now handles its own RCU protection and does not depend on ftrace to do
it for it (saving on that extra function call).
New debug option to add "recursed_functions" file to tracefs that lists all
the places that triggered the recursion protection of the function tracer.
This will show where things need to be fixed as recursion slows down the
function tracer.
The eval enum mapping updates done at boot up are now offloaded to a work
queue, as it caused a noticeable pause on slow embedded boards.
Various clean ups and last minute fixes.

Now that all callbacks are recursion safe, reverse the meaning of the
RECURSION flag and rename it from RECURSION_SAFE to simply RECURSION.
Now only callbacks that request to have recursion protecting it will
have the added trampoline to do so.
Also remove the outdated comment about "PER_CPU" when determining to
use the ftrace_ops_assist_func.

After this series, the number of html build warnings should reduce

As agreed with Jon, I should be sending you a late pull request by the

that should be happening along the merge window.
The end goal is to have a clean htmldocs build on Kernel 5.10.

"During the v5.9 merge window we reworked the process creation
codepaths across multiple architectures. After this work we were only
left with the _do_fork() helper based on the struct kernel_clone_args
calling convention. As was pointed out _do_fork() isn't valid
kernelese especially for a helper that isn't just static.
This series removes the _do_fork() helper and introduces the new
kernel_clone() helper. The process creation cleanup didn't change the
name to something more reasonable mainly because _do_fork() was used
in quite a few places. So sending this as a separate series seemed the
better strategy.
I originally intended to send this early in the v5.9 development cycle
after the merge window had closed but given that this was touching
quite a few places I decided to defer this until the v5.10 merge

# echo 'test_latency u64 lat; char somename[32]' > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/synthetic_events
Which is fine, but wastes a lot of space in the event.
It also prevents the most commonly-defined strings in the existing
trace events e.g. those defined using __string(), from being passed to
synthetic events via the trace() action.
With this change, synthetic events with dynamic fields can be defined:
# echo 'test_latency u64 lat; char somename[]' > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/synthetic_events
And the trace() action can be used to generate events using either
dynamic or static strings:
# echo 'hist:keys=name:lat=common_timestamp.usecs-$ts0:onmatch(sys.event).test_latency($lat,name)' > /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events
The synthetic event dynamic strings are implemented in the same way as
the existing __data_loc strings and appear as such in the format file.
[ <rostedt@goodmis.org>: added __set_synth_event_print_fmt() changes:
I added the following to make it work with trace-cmd. Dynamic strings
must have __get_str() for events in the print_fmt otherwise it can't be
parsed correctly. ]

As tracepoints are discouraged from being added in a header because it can
cause side effects if other tracepoints are in headers, as well as bloat the
kernel as the trace_<tracepoint>() function is not a small inline, the common
workaround is to add a function call that calls a wrapper function in a
C file that then calls the tracepoint. But as function calls add overhead,
this function should only be called when the tracepoint in question is
enabled. To get around this overhead, a static_branch can be used to only
have the tracepoint wrapper get called when the tracepoint is enabled.
Add a tracepoint_enabled(tp) macro that gets passed the name of the
tracepoint, and this becomes a static_branch that is enabled when the
tracepoint is enabled and is a nop when the tracepoint is disabled.

Add the note about when to start the boot-time tracing.
This will be needed for the people who wants to trace

There is and has been for a very long time been a lot more going on in
flush_old_exec than just flushing the old state. After the movement
of code from setup_new_exec there is a whole lot more going on than
just flushing the old executables state.
Rename flush_old_exec to begin_new_exec to more accurately reflect
what this function does.

- The ring buffer is no longer disabled when reading the trace file.
The trace_pipe file was made to be used for live tracing and reading
as it acted like the normal producer/consumer. As the trace file
would not consume the data, the easy way of handling it was to just
disable writes to the ring buffer. This came to a surprise to the
BPF folks who complained about lost events due to reading.
This is no longer an issue. If someone wants to keep the old disabling
there's a new option "pause-on-trace" that can be set.
- New set_ftrace_notrace_pid file. PIDs in this file will not be traced
by the function tracer. Similar to set_ftrace_pid, which makes the
function tracer only trace those tasks with PIDs in the file, the
set_ftrace_notrace_pid does the reverse.
- New set_event_notrace_pid file. PIDs in this file will cause events
not to be traced if triggered by a task with a matching PID.
Similar to the set_event_pid file but will not be traced.
Note, sched_waking and sched_switch events may still be trace if
one of the tasks referenced by those events contains a PID that
is allowed to be traced.
Tracing related features:
- New bootconfig option, that is attached to the initrd file.
If bootconfig is on the command line, then the initrd file
is searched looking for a bootconfig appended at the end.
- New GPU tracepoint infrastructure to help the gfx drivers to get
off debugfs (acked by Greg Kroah-Hartman)
Other minor updates and fixes.

The hwlat tracer runs a loop of width time during a given window. It then
reports the max latency over a given threshold and records a timestamp. But
this timestamp is the time after the width has finished, and not the time it
actually triggered.
Record the actual time when the latency was greater than the threshold as
well as the number of times it was greater in a given width per window.

Modify the definitions of the CPU latency QoS trace events to take
one argument (since PM_QOS_CPU_DMA_LATENCY is always passed as the
pm_qos_class argument to them) and update the documentation of them
accordingly (while at it, make it explicitly mention CPU latency QoS
and relocate it after the device PM QoS trace events documentation).
The names and output format of the trace events do not change to
preserve user space compatibility.
No intentional functional impact.

Merge tag 'trace-v5.6-2' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/rostedt/linux-trace
Pull tracing updates from Steven Rostedt:
- Added new "bootconfig".
This looks for a file appended to initrd to add boot config options,
and has been discussed thoroughly at Linux Plumbers.
Very useful for adding kprobes at bootup.
Only enabled if "bootconfig" is on the real kernel command line.
- Created dynamic event creation.
Merges common code between creating synthetic events and kprobe
events.
- Rename perf "ring_buffer" structure to "perf_buffer"
- Rename ftrace "ring_buffer" structure to "trace_buffer"
Had to rename existing "trace_buffer" to "array_buffer"
- Allow trace_printk() to work withing (some) tracing code.
- Sort of tracing configs to be a little better organized
- Fixed bug where ftrace_graph hash was not being protected properly
- Various other small fixes and clean ups
