Previously, a command sent lvmetad new VG metadata in vg_commit().
In vg_commit(), devices are suspended, so any memory allocation
done by the command while sending to lvmetad, or by lvmetad while
updating its cache could deadlock if memory reclaim was triggered.
Now lvmetad is updated in unlock_vg(), after devices are resumed.
The new method for updating VG metadata in lvmetad is in two phases:
1. In vg_write(), before devices are suspended, the command sends
lvmetad a short message ("set_vg_info") telling it what the new
VG seqno will be. lvmetad sees that the seqno is newer than
the seqno of its cached VG, so it sets the INVALID flag for the
cached VG. If sending the message to lvmetad fails, the command
fails before the metadata is committed and the change is not made.
If sending the message succeeds, vg_commit() is called.
2. In unlock_vg(), after devices are resumed, the command sends
lvmetad the standard vg_update message with the new metadata.
lvmetad sees that the seqno in the new metadata matches the
seqno it saved from set_vg_info, and knows it has the latest
copy, so it clears the INVALID flag for the cached VG.
If a command fails between 1 and 2 (after committing the VG on disk,
but before sending lvmetad the new metadata), the cached VG retains
the INVALID flag in lvmetad. A subsequent command will read the
cached VG from lvmetad, see the INVALID flag, ignore the cached
copy, read the VG from disk instead, update the lvmetad copy
with the latest copy from disk, (this clears the INVALID flag
in lvmetad), and use the correct VG metadata for the command.
(This INVALID mechanism already existed for use by lvmlockd.)
Add new structures and new fields in existing structures to support
tracking history of LVs (the LVs which don't exist - the have been
removed already):
- new "struct historical_logical_volume"
This structure keeps information specific to historical LVs
(historical LV is very reduced form of struct logical_volume +
it contains a few specific fields to track historical LV
properties like removal time and connections among other LVs).
- new "struct generic_logical_volume"
Wrapper for "struct historical_logical_volume" and
"struct logical_volume" to make it possible to handle volumes
in uniform way, no matter if it's live or historical one.
- new "struct glv_list"
Wrapper for "struct generic_logical_volume" so it can be
added to a list.
- new "indirect_glvs" field in "struct logical_volume"
List that stores references to all indirect users of this LV - this
interconnects live LV with historical descendant LVs or even live
descendant LVs.
- new "indirect_origin" field in "struct lv_segment"
Reference to indirect origin of this segment - this interconnects
live LV (segment) with historical ancestor.
- new "this_glv" field in "struct logical_volume"
This references an existing generic_logical_volume wrapper for this
LV, if used. It can be NULL if not needed - which means we're not
handling historical LVs at all.
- new "historical_lvs" field in "struct volume group
List of all historical LVs read from VG metadata.
The vg->pv_write_list contains pv_list structs for which
vg_write() should call pv_write().
The new list will replace vg->pvs_to_write that contains
vg_to_create structs which are used to perform higher-level
pvcreate-related operations. The higher level pvcreate
operations will be moved out of vg_write() to higher levels.
We'll use this struct in subsequent patches for PVs which should
be rewritten, not just created. So rename struct pv_to_create to
struct pv_to_write for clarity.
Unifying terminology.
Since all the metadata in-use are ALWAYS on disk - switch
to terminology committed and precommitted.
Patch has no functional change inside.
Do not keep dangling LVs if they're removed from the vg->lvs list and
move them to vg->removed_lvs instead (this is actually similar to already
existing vg->removed_pvs list, just it's for LVs now).
Once we have this vg->removed_lvs list indexed so it's possible to
do lookups for LVs quickly, we can remove the LV_REMOVED flag as
that one won't be needed anymore - instead of checking the flag,
we can directly check the vg->removed_lvs list if the LV is present
there or not and to say if the LV is removed or not then. For now,
we don't have this index, but it may be implemented in the future.
Set ACCESS_NEEDS_SYSTEM_ID VG status flag whenever there is
a non-lvm1 system_id set. Prevents concurrent access from
older LVM2 versions.
Not set on VGs that bear a system_id only due to conversion
from lvm1 metadata.
The vg->lvm1_systemd_id needs to be initialized as all the code around
counts with that. Just like we initialize lvm1_system_id in vg_create
(no matter if it's actually LVM1 or LVM2 format), this patch adds this
init in alloc_vg as well so the rest of the code does not segfaul
when trying to access vg->lvm1_system_id.
In log messages refer to it as system ID (not System ID).
Do not put quotes around the system_id string when printing.
On the command line use systemid.
In code, metadata, and config files use system_id.
In lvmsystemid refer to the concept/entity as system_id.
Move the lvm1 sys ID into vg->lvm1_system_id and reenable the #if 0
LVM1 code. Still display the new-style system ID in the same
reporting field, though, as only one can be set.
Add a format feature flag FMT_SYSTEM_ON_PVS for LVM1 and disallow
access to LVM1 VGs if a new-style system ID has been set.
Treat the new vg->system_id as const.
If we want to support conversion of VG to clustered type,
we currently need to relock active LV to get proper DLM lock.
So add extra loop after change of VG clustered attribute
to exlusively activate all active top level LVs.
When doing change -cy -> -cn we should validate LVs are not
active on other cluster nodes - we could be sure about this only
when with local exclusive activation - for other types
we require user to deactivate volumes first.
As a workaround for this limitation there is always
locking_type = 0 which amongs other skip the detection
of active LVs.
FIXME:
clvmd should handle looks for cluster locking type all the time.
While we could probably reacquire some type of lock when
going from non-clustered to clustered vg, we don't have any
single road back to drop the lock and keep LV active.
For now keep it safe and prohibit conversion when LV
is active in the VG.
Parsing vg structure during supend/commit/resume may require a lot of
memory - so move this into vg_write.
FIXME: there are now multiple cache layers which our doing some thing
multiple times at different levels. Moreover there is now different
caching path with and without lvmetad - this should be unified
and both path should use same mechanism.
Replace the code with the refactored vgreduce_single instead
of calling its own implementation.

Moving the core functionality of vgreduce single into
lib/metadata/vg.c so that the command line and lvm2app library
can call the same core functionality. New function is
vgreduce_single.

Creation, deletion, [de]activation, repair, conversion, scrubbing
and changing operations are all now available for RAID LVs in a
cluster - provided that they are activated exclusively.
The code has been changed to ensure that no LV or sub-LV activation
is attempted cluster-wide. This includes the often overlooked
operations of activating metadata areas for the brief time it takes
to clear them. Additionally, some 'resume_lv' operations were
replaced with 'activate_lv_excl_local' when sub-LVs were promoted
to top-level LVs for removal, clearing or extraction. This was
necessary because it forces the appropriate renaming actions the
occur via resume in the single-machine case, but won't happen in
a cluster due to the necessity of acquiring a lock first.
The *raid* tests have been updated to allow testing in a cluster.
For the most part, this meant creating devices with '-aey' if they
were to be converted to RAID. (RAID requires the converting LV to
be EX because it is a condition of activation for the RAID LV in
a cluster.)
This allows us to get the current on-disk version of the metadata whenever we
have the current in-flight version, without a recourse to scanning or lvmcache.
It would be possible to activate a RAID LV exclusively in a cluster
volume group, but for now we do not allow RAID LVs to exist in a
clustered volume group at all. This has two components:
1) Do not allow RAID LVs to be created in a clustered VG
2) Do not allow changing a VG from single-machine to clustered
if there are RAID LVs present.
Move commod code to destroy orphan VG into free_orphan_vg() function.
Use orphan vgmem for creation of PV lists.
Remove some free_pv_fid() calls (FIXME: check all of them)
FIXME: Check whether we could merge release_vg back again for all VGs.
Basic support to keep info when the LV was created.
Host and time is stored into LV mda section.
FIXME: Current version doesn't support configurable string via lvm.conf
and used fixed version strftime "%Y-%m-%d %T %z".
Extend vginfo cache with cached VG structure. So if the same metadata
are use, skip mda decoding in the case, the same data are in use.
This helps for operations like activation of all LVs in one VG,
where same data were decoded giving the same output result.
Patch adds 1-to-1 connection between volume_group and lvmcache_vginfo.
Move the free_vg() to vg.c and replace free_vg with release_vg
and make the _free_vg internal.
Patch is needed for sharing VG in vginfo cache so the release_vg function name
is a better fit here.
Create new function alloc_vg() to allocate VG structure.
It takes pool_name (for easier debugging).
and also take vg_name to futher simplify code.
Move remainder of _build_vg_from_pds to _pool_vg_read
and use vg memory pool for import functions.
(it's been using smem -> fid mempool -> cmd mempool)
(FIXME: remove mempool parameter for import functions and use vg).
Move remainder of the _build_vg to _format1_vg_read
Add supporting functions for vg_name, vg_fmt, vg_system_id.
Append "_dup" to end of supporting functions to make clear the strings
are dup'd and to avoid namespace conflict with vg_name.
Add supporting functions for pv_uuid, vg_uuid, and lv_uuid.
Call new function id_format_and_copy. Use 'const' where appropriate.
Add "_dup" suffix to indicate memory is being allocated.
Call {pv|vg|lv}_uuid_dup from lvm2app uuid functions.
This patch addresses code review request to simplify creation of 'attr'
strings. The simplification is done in this separate patch to more
easily review and ensure the simplification is done without error.
