dc83f27a7c man: fully document sd-event interfaces
This completes the set of man pages for sd-event and contains some minor
other fixes for other man pages too.

The sd_event_set_name(3) man page is renamed to
sd_event_source_set_description(3), which is the correct name of the
concept today.

3e0c30ac56 core: add RemainAfterElapse= setting to timer units
Previously, after a timer unit elapsed we'd leave it around for good,
which has the nice benefit that starting a timer that shall trigger at a
specific point in time multiple times will only result in one trigger
instead of possibly many. With this change a new option
RemainAfterElapse= is added. It defaults to "true", to mimic the old
behaviour. If set to "false" timer units will be unloaded after they
elapsed. This is specifically useful for transient timer units.

2904e949f2 tmpfiles: create subvolumes for "v", "q", and "Q" only if / is a subvolume
It's not a good idea to create subvolumes for parts of the OS tree (such
as /home, or /var) if the root directory is not a subvolume too. We
shouldn't assume control of "heavier" objects such as subvolumes, if the
originating object (the root directory) is a "light-weight" object, i.e.
a plain directory.

Effectively this means that chroot() environments that are run on a
plain directory do not have to deal with problems around systemd
creating subvolumes that cannot be removed with a simple "rm" anymore.
However, if the chroot manager creates a proper subvolume for such an
environment it will also get further subvolumes placed in there, under
the assumption that the manager understands the concept of subvolumes in
that case.

90558f3158 logind: add a new UserTasksMax= setting to logind.conf
This new setting configures the TasksMax= field for the slice objects we
create for each user.

This alters logind to create the slice unit as transient unit explicitly
instead of relying on implicit generation of slice units by simply
starting them. This also enables us to set a friendly description for
slice units that way.

765afd5c4d networkd: stop managing per-interface IP forwarding settings
As it turns out the kernel does not support per-interface IPv6 packet
forwarding controls (unlike as it does for IPv4), but only supports a
global option (#1597). Also, the current per-interface management of the
setting isn't really useful, as you want it to propagate to at least one
more interface than the one you configure it on. This created much grief
(#1411, #1808).

Hence, let's roll this logic back and simplify this again, so that we
can expose the same behaviour on IPv4 and IPv6 and things start to work
automatically again for most folks: if a network with this setting set
is set up we propagate the setting into the global setting, but this is
strictly one-way: we never reset it again, and we do nothing for network
interfaces where this setting is not enabled.

Fixes: #1808, #1597.

f6d6bad146 nspawn: add new --network-veth-extra= switch for defining additional veth links
The new switch operates like --network-veth, but may be specified
multiple times (to define multiple link pairs) and allows flexible

This is an independent reimplementation of #1678, but defines different
semantics, keeping the behaviour completely independent of
--network-veth. It also comes will full hook-up for .nspawn files, and
the matching documentation.

f32b43bda4 core: remove support for RequiresOverridable= and RequisiteOverridable=
As discussed at systemd.conf 2015 and on also raised on the ML:

http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/systemd-devel/2015-November/034880.html

This removes the two XyzOverridable= unit dependencies, that were
basically never used, and do not enhance user experience in any way.
Most folks looking for the functionality this provides probably opt for
the "ignore-dependencies" job mode, and that's probably a good idea.

Hence, let's simplify systemd's dependency engine and remove these two
dependency types (and their inverses).

The unit file parser and the dbus property parser will now redirect
the settings/properties to result in an equivalent non-overridable
dependency. In the case of the unit file parser we generate a warning,
to inform the user.

The dbus properties for this unit type stay available on the unit
objects, but they are now hidden from usual introspection and will
always return the empty list when queried.

This should provide enough compatibility for the few unit files that
actually ever made use of this.

79413b673b core: simplify handling of %u, %U, %s and %h unit file specifiers
Previously, the %u, %U, %s and %h specifiers would resolve to the user
name, numeric user ID, shell and home directory of the user configured
in the User= setting of a unit file, or the user of the manager instance
if no User= setting was configured. That at least was the theory. In
real-life this was not ever actually useful:

- For the systemd --user instance it made no sense to ever set User=,
since the instance runs in user context after all, and hence the
privileges to change user IDs don't even exist. The four specifiers
were actually not useful at all in this case.

- For the systemd --system instance we did not allow any resolving that
would require NSS. Hence, %s and %h were not supported, unless
User=root was set, in which case they would be hardcoded to /bin/sh
and /root, to avoid NSS. Then, %u would actually resolve to whatever
was set with User=, but %U would only resolve to the numeric UID of
that setting if the User= was specified in numeric form, or happened
to be root (in which case 0 was hardcoded as mapping). Two of the
specifiers are entirely useless in this case, one is realistically
also useless, and one is pretty pointless.

- Resolving of these settings would only happen if User= was actually
set *before* the specifiers where resolved. This behaviour was
undocumented and is really ugly, as specifiers should actually be
considered something that applies to the whole file equally,
  independently of order...

With this change, %u, %U, %s and %h are drastically simplified: they now
always refer to the user that is running the service instance, and the
user configured in the unit file is irrelevant. For the system instance
of systemd this means they always resolve to "root", "0", "/bin/sh" and
"/root", thus avoiding NSS. For the user instance, to the data for the
specific user.

The new behaviour is identical to the old behaviour in all --user cases
and for all units that have no User= set (or set to "0" or "root").

0ec0deaa30 install: follow unit file symlinks in /usr, but not /etc when looking for [Install] data
Some distributions use alias unit files via symlinks in /usr to cover
for legacy service names. With this change we'll allow "systemctl
enable" on such aliases.

Previously, our rule was that symlinks are user configuration that
"systemctl enable" + "systemctl disable" creates and removes, while unit
files is where the instructions to do so are store. As a result of the
rule we'd never read install information through symlinks, since that
would mix enablement state with installation instructions.

Now, the new rule is that only symlinks inside of /etc are
configuration. Unit files, and symlinks in /usr are now valid for
installation instructions.

This patch is quite a rework of the whole install logic, and makes the
following addional changes:

- Adds a complete test "test-instal-root" that tests the install logic
  pretty comprehensively.

- Never uses canonicalize_file_name(), because that's incompatible with
operation relative to a specific root directory.

- unit_file_get_state() is reworked to return a proper error, and
returns the state in a call-by-ref parameter. This cleans up confusion
between the enum type and errno-like errors.

- The new logic puts a limit on how long to follow unit file symlinks:
it will do so only for 64 steps at max.

- The InstallContext object's fields are renamed to will_process and
has_processed (will_install and has_installed) since they are also
used for deinstallation and all kinds of other operations.

- The root directory is always verified before use.

- install.c is reordered to place the exported functions together.

- Stricter rules are followed when traversing symlinks: the unit suffix
must say identical, and it's not allowed to link between regular units
  and templated units.

- Various modernizations

- The "invalid" unit file state has been renamed to "bad", in order to
  avoid confusion between UNIT_FILE_INVALID and
_UNIT_FILE_STATE_INVALID. Given that the state should normally not be
seen and is not documented this should not be a problematic change.
The new name is now documented however.

This directive allows passing environment variables from the system

Tested using `systemd-run -p PassEnvironment=VARNAME` to confirm it

f5a8c43f39 networkd: IPv6 router discovery - follow IPv6AcceptRouterAdvertisemnt=
The previous behavior:
When DHCPv6 was enabled, router discover was performed first, and then DHCPv6 was
enabled only if the relevant flags were passed in the Router Advertisement message.
Moreover, router discovery was performed even if AcceptRouterAdvertisements=false,
moreover, even if router advertisements were accepted (by the kernel) the flags
indicating that DHCPv6 should be performed were ignored.

New behavior:
If RouterAdvertisements are accepted, and either no routers are found, or an
advertisement is received indicating DHCPv6 should be performed, the DHCPv6
client is started. Moreover, the DHCP option now truly enables the DHCPv6
client regardless of router discovery (though it will probably not be
very useful to get a lease withotu any routes, this seems the more consistent
approach).

The recommended default setting should be to set DHCP=ipv4 and to leave
IPv6AcceptRouterAdvertisements unset.

dbd6e31cf9 journalctl: make --rotate synchronous, too
Of course, ideally we'd just use normal synchronous bus calls, but this
is out of the question as long as we rely on dbus-daemon (which logs to

signal in one direction, and a mtime watch file for the reply.

36b4a7ba55 Remove snapshot unit type
Snapshots were never useful or used for anything. Many systemd
developers that I spoke to at systemd.conf2015, didn't even know they
existed, so it is fairly safe to assume that this type can be deleted
without harm.

The fundamental problem with snapshots is that the state of the system
is dynamic, devices come and go, users log in and out, timers fire...
and restoring all units to some state from the past would "undo"
those changes, which isn't really possible.

Tested by creating a snapshot, running the new binary, and checking
that the transition did not cause errors, and the snapshot is gone,
and snapshots cannot be created anymore.

New systemctl says:
Unknown operation snapshot.
Old systemctl says:
Failed to create snapshot: Support for snapshots has been removed.

IgnoreOnSnaphost settings are warned about and ignored:
Support for option IgnoreOnSnapshot= has been removed and it is ignored

8580d1f73d journal: rework vacuuming logic
Implement a maximum limit on number of journal files to keep around.
Enforcing a limit is useful on this since our performance when viewing
pays a heavy penalty for each journal file to interleve. This setting is
turned on now by default, and set to 100.

Also, actully implement what 348ced9097
promised: use whatever we find on disk at startup as lower bound on how
much disk space we can use. That commit introduced some provisions to
implement this, but actually never did.

This also adds "journalctl --vacuum-files=" to vacuum files on disk by
their number explicitly.

d35c1bb1f4 rfkill: rework and make it listen on /dev/rfkill
With this rework we introduce systemd-rfkill.service as singleton that
is activated via systemd-rfkill.socket that listens on /dev/rfkill. That
way, we get notified each time a new rfkill device shows up or changes
state, in which case we restore and save its current setting to disk.

This is nicer than the previous logic, as this means we save/restore
state even of rfkill devices that are around only intermittently, and
save/restore the state even if the system is shutdown abruptly instead
of cleanly.

This implements what I suggested in #1019 and obsoletes it.

b9e74c3994 core: rework crash handling
This introduces a new systemd.crash_reboot=1 kernel command line option
that triggers a reboot after crashing.

This also cleans up crash VT handling. Specifically, it cleans up the
configuration setting, to be between 1..63 or a boolean. This is to
replace the previous logic where "-1" meant disabled. We continue to
accept that setting, but only document the boolean syntax instead.

This also brings the documentation of the default settings in sync with
what actually happens.

The CrashChVT= configuration file setting is renamed to CrashChangeVT=,
following our usual logic of not abbreviating unnecessarily. The old
setting stays support for compat reasons.

287419c119 containers: systemd exits with non-zero code
When a systemd service running in a container exits with a non-zero
code, it can be useful to terminate the container immediately and get
the exit code back to the host, when systemd-nspawn returns. This was
not possible to do. This patch adds the following to make it possible:

- Add a read-only "ExitCode" property on PID 1's "Manager" bus object.
By default, it is 0 so the behaviour stays the same as previously.
- Add a method "SetExitCode" on the same object. The method fails when
called on baremetal: it is only allowed in containers or in user
  session.
- Add support in systemctl to call "systemctl exit 42". It reuses the
  existing code for user session.
- Add exit.target and systemd-exit.service to the system instance.
- Change main() to actually call systemd-shutdown to exit() with the
  correct value.
- Add verb 'exit' in systemd-shutdown with parameter --exit-code
- Update systemctl manpage.

I used the following to test it:

| $ sudo rkt --debug --insecure-skip-verify run \
| --mds-register=false --local docker://busybox \
| --exec=/bin/chroot -- /proc/1/root \

32ee7d3309 cgroup: add support for net_cls controllers
Add a new config directive called NetClass= to CGroup enabled units.
Allowed values are positive numbers for fix assignments and "auto" for
picking a free value automatically, for which we need to keep track of
dynamically assigned net class IDs of units. Introduce a hash table for
this, and also record the last ID that was given out, so the allocator
can start its search for the next 'hole' from there. This could
eventually be optimized with something like an irb.

The class IDs up to 65536 are considered reserved and won't be
assigned automatically by systemd. This barrier can be made a config
directive in the future.

Values set in unit files are stored in the CGroupContext of the
unit and considered read-only. The actually assigned number (which
may have been chosen dynamically) is stored in the unit itself and
is guaranteed to remain stable as long as the unit is active.

In the CGroup controller, set the configured CGroup net class to
net_cls.classid. Multiple unit may share the same net class ID,
and those which do are linked together.

d53d94743c core: refactor cpu shares/blockio weight cgroup logic
Let's stop using the "unsigned long" type for weights/shares, and let's
just use uint64_t for this, as that's what we expose on the bus.

Unify parsers, and always validate the range for these fields.

Correct the default blockio weight to 500, since that's what the kernel
actually uses.

When parsing the weight/shares settings from unit files accept the empty
string as a way to reset the weight/shares value. When getting it via
the bus, uniformly map (uint64_t) -1 to unset.

Open up StartupCPUShares= and StartupBlockIOWeight= to transient units.

03a7b521e3 core: add support for the "pids" cgroup controller
This adds support for the new "pids" cgroup controller of 4.3 kernels.
It allows accounting the number of tasks in a cgroup and enforcing
limits on it.

This adds two new setting TasksAccounting= and TasksMax= to each unit,
as well as a gloabl option DefaultTasksAccounting=.

This also updated "cgtop" to optionally make use of the new
kernel-provided accounting.

systemctl has been updated to show the number of tasks for each service
if it is available.

This patch also adds correct support for undoing memory limits for units
using a MemoryLimit=infinity syntax. We do the same for TasksMax= now
and hence keep things in sync here.

In preparation of the unified cgroup support, let's clean up cgtop:

a) rework time code to be based on "nsec_t" rather than "struct timespec"

b) Introduce long option --order= for selecting ordering

c) count number of processes only in the main hierarchy, don't bother
with the controller hierarchies. We don't allow orthogonal
hierarchies in systemd anymore, hence there's no point to check the
   other hierarchies.

d) Deal with non-monotonic cpuacct values (see #749)

e) When sorting groups, don't do prefix compare when ordering by number
of tasks, since this is not accumulative for all children.

f) Actually make --cpu without parameter work

g) Don't output control characters when we get them as input.

Fixes #749.

Previously it was just descibed that ExecStartPost= commands were
started "after" the ExecStart= command(s).
This hasn't specified after which event, which varies from after it has

has taken the bus name, depending on Type=.

This now describes that it happens after the *service* has "started",
as defined by the Type=, and provides some clarification about precisely
when this is.

This may be unnecessary duplication, but it removes the ambiguity as to
whether RemainAfterExit=no means that ExecStartPost= shouldn't be
started because it means the service has stopped when the ExecStart=
command terminates, not "started".

a9b70f9dfd network: rename DiffServiceCodePoint to CopyDSCP
Old name was slightly misleading, because this flag does not determine
whether DSCP is used overall, but only if it is copied to the
decapsulated packet. Rename to better reflect that.

"Copy" does not imply direction. This is on purpose, because we might
later on enhance the setting to allow/disallow copying in the other
direction, to the encapsulated packet. If that is implemented,
CopyDSCP could understand additional values. This is nicer than
having two separate settings and follows the example of DHCP=.

Also, we try to avoid abbreviations, but we allow acronyms
like MTU, in DiscoverPathMTU=.

This setting was recently added, so it's fine to rename it without
backwards compat.

This scheme fixes permalinks to distinguish between items that would previously have the same ID attribute.

Where possible the generated ID values are the same as those generated with the previous versions of the stylesheet
to retain backwards compatibility with published links.

As a side effect of the changes xsltproc should no longer complain about duplicate IDs during build.

c01ff965b4 nss-mymachines: map userns users of containers to real user names
Given a container "foo", that maps user id $UID to container user, using
user namespaces, this NSS module extenstion will now map the $UID to a
name "vu-foo-$TUID" for the translated UID $UID.

Similar, userns groups are mapped to "vg-foo-$TGID" for translated GIDs
of $GID.

This simple change should make userns users more discoverable. Also,
given that many tools like "adduser" check NSS before allocating a UID,
should lower the chance of UID range conflicts between tools.

1f0d969512 networkd: various fixes for the IPv6 privacy extensions support
- Make sure that the IPv6PrivacyExtensions=yes results in
  prefer-temporary, not prefer-public.

- Introduce special enum value "kernel" to leave setting unset, similar
how we have it for the IP forwarding settings.

- Bring the enum values in sync with the the strings we parse for them,
to the level this makes sense (specifically, rename "disabled" to
  "no", and "prefer-temporary" to "yes").

- Make sure we really set the value to to "no" by default, the way it is
already documented in the man page.

- Fix whitespace error.

- Make sure link_ipv6_privacy_extensions() actually returns the correct
enum type, rather than implicitly casting it to "bool".

- properly size formatting buffer for ipv6 sysctl value

- Don't complain if /proc/sys isn't writable

- Document that the enum follows the kernel's own values (0 = off, 1 =
  prefer-public, 2 = prefer-temporary)

- Drop redundant negating of error code passed to log_syntax()

- Manpage fixes

This fixes a number of issues from PR #417

12b42c7667 man: revert dynamic paths for split-usr setups
This did not really work out as we had hoped. Trying to do this upstream
introduced several problems that probably makes it better suited as a
downstream patch after all. At any rate, it is not releaseable in the
current state, so we at least need to revert this before the release.

 * by adjusting the path to binaries, but not do the same thing to the
search path we end up with inconsistent man-pages. Adjusting the search
path too would be quite messy, and it is not at all obvious that this is
worth the effort, but at any rate it would have to be done before we
   could ship this.

 * this means that distributed man-pages does not make sense as they depend
on config options, and for better or worse we are still distributing
man pages, so that is something that definitely needs sorting out before
we could ship with this patch.

 * we have long held that split-usr is only minimally supported in order
to boot, and something we hope will eventually go away. So before we start
adding even more magic/effort in order to make this work nicely, we should
probably question if it makes sense at all.

If no kdbus kernel support is available, dbus-dameon will be used.

With --disable-kdbus, the kernel command line option "kdbus=1" is

06255d6f76 man: add libudev man-pages (skeletons)
This adds man-pages for most of the libudev symbols we export. Similar
symbols are grouped together in a single man-page, with respective links
added. All man-pages contain the full skeleton including NAME, SYNOPSIS,
RETURN VALUE and SEE ALSO. However, most of them still lack the
DESCRIPTION part. This should be copied from the gtkdoc descriptions in
src/libudev/libudev*.[ch]. Any help is welcome! (the whole skeleton is
already done, so it's really just about the prose-part of the man-pages to
be written).

Missing from the man-pages are the following parts:
  - udev_set_log_fn()
  - udev_[gs]et_log_priority()
  - udev_[gs]et_userdata()
  - udev_list_entry_foreach()
  - udev_device_get_seqnum()
  - udev_device_get_usec_since_initialized()
  - udev_util_encode_string()
These are considered legacy, afaik. If not, please feel free to add them
now!

Furthermore, udev-hwdb and udev-queue are not documented at all (for the
same reasons).
