d3fae78fe8 man: Factor out a common snippet for .d directories and precedence
Several manpages contain duplicate text describing a standard set of .d
configuration directories, with the usual sorting, precedence,
overrides, and so on. Factor this common text out using XInclude before
proliferating it even further.

7d4fb3b1c5 systemctl: add edit verb
It helps editing units by either creating a drop-in file, like
/etc/systemd/system/my.service.d/override.conf, or by copying the
original unit from /usr/lib/systemd/ to /etc/systemd/ if the --full
option is specified.

It invokes an editor on temporary files related to the unit files and
if the editor exited successfully, then it renames the temporary files
to their original names (e.g. my.service or override.conf) and
daemon-reload is invoked.

If the temporary file is empty the modification is canceled.

e846102353 logind: Support logind.conf.d directories in the usual search paths
This makes it possible to drop in logind configuration snippets from a
package or other configuration management mechanism.

Add documentation to the header of /etc/logind.conf pointing the user at
/etc/logind.conf.d/*.conf.

Introduce a new helper, conf_parse_many, to parse configuration files in
a search path.

5607d856b8 swap: restore support for nofail
systemd stops adding automatic dependencies on swap.target to swap
units. If a dependency is required, it has to be added by unit
configuration. fstab-generator did that already, except that now it is
modified to create a Requires or Wants type dependency, depending on
whether nofail is specified in /etc/fstab. This makes .swap units
obey the nofail/noauto options more or less the same as .mount units.

Documentation is extended to clarify that, and to make
systemd.mount(5) and system.swap(5) more similar. The gist is not
changed, because current behaviour actually matches existing
documentation.

2ca620c4ed smack: introduce new SmackProcessLabel option
In service file, if the file has some of special SMACK label in
ExecStart= and systemd has no permission for the special SMACK label
then permission error will occurred. To resolve this, systemd should
be able to set its SMACK label to something accessible of ExecStart=.
So introduce new SmackProcessLabel. If label is specified with
SmackProcessLabel= then the child systemd will set its label to
that. To successfully execute the ExecStart=, accessible label should
be specified with SmackProcessLabel=.
Additionally, by SMACK policy, if the file in ExecStart= has no
SMACK64EXEC then the executed process will have given label by
SmackProcessLabel=. But if the file has SMACK64EXEC then the
SMACK64EXEC label will be overridden.

f6375e8376 man: reword list-dependencies description
The previous version was a bit too vague. It is better
to simply list all dependency types that are followed.

Previous version also made an emphasis on dependencies introduced by
configuration. But this command (or systemd) don't care about this
distinction between configured and automatically added dependencies at
all. This distinctionis removed from the main description, and an
explanatory paragraph is added to remind the user that all
dependencies are shown, no matter where they come from.

574edc9006 nspawn: Add try-{host,guest} journal link modes
--link-journal={host,guest} fail if the host does not have persistent
journalling enabled and /var/log/journal/ does not exist. Even worse, as there
is no stdout/err any more, there is no error message to point that out.

Introduce two new modes "try-host" and "try-guest" which don't fail in this
case, and instead just silently skip the guest journal setup.

Change -j to mean "try-guest" instead of "guest", and fix the wrong --help
output for it (it said "host" before).

Change systemd-nspawn@.service.in to use "try-guest" so that this unit works
with both persistent and non-persistent journals on the host without failing.

036359ba8d man: don't document systemctl --failed
This effectively reverts 599b6322f1, which
in turn partially reverted 4dc5b821ae.

The --failed switch is not documented on purpose, since it is redundant
due to --state=failed, which it predates. Due to that it's not
documented in --help either.

We generally try to avoid redundant interfaces, but if we need to keep
them for compatibility we do so, however remove them from documentation
to ensure they are not used in future.

The man page is now changed to include a comment about the fact that
--failed is not documented on purpose. Also, explicitly mention
--state=failed as example for --state.

a931ad47a8 core: introduce new Delegate=yes/no property controlling creation of cgroup subhierarchies
For priviliged units this resource control property ensures that the
processes have all controllers systemd manages enabled.

For unpriviliged services (those with User= set) this ensures that
access rights to the service cgroup is granted to the user in question,
to create further subgroups. Note that this only applies to the
name=systemd hierarchy though, as access to other controllers is not
safe for unpriviliged processes.

Delegate=yes should be set for container scopes where a systemd instance
inside the container shall manage the hierarchies below its own cgroup
and have access to all controllers.

Delegate=yes should also be set for user@.service, so that systemd
--user can run, controlling its own cgroup tree.

This commit changes machined, systemd-nspawn@.service and user@.service
to set this boolean, in order to ensure that container management will
just work, and the user systemd instance can run fine.

f47ad59316 Use log "level" instead of "priority"
The term "priority" is misleading because higher levels have lower
priority. "Level" is clearer and shorter.

This commit touches only the textual descriptions, not function and variable
names themselves. "Priority" is used in various command-line switches and
protocol constants, so completly getting rid of "priority" is hard.

I also left "priority" in various places where the clarity suffered
when it was removed.

33488f1979 udev hwdb: Support shipping pre-compiled database in system images
In some cases it is preferable to ship system images with a pre-generated
binary hwdb database, to avoid having to build it at runtime, avoid shipping
the source hwdb files, or avoid storing large binary files in /etc.

So if hwdb.bin does not exist in /etc/udev/, fall back to looking for it in
UDEVLIBEXECDIR. This keeps the possibility to add files to /etc/udev/hwdb.d/
and re-generating the database which trumps the one in /usr/lib.

Add a new --usr flag to "udevadm hwdb --update" which puts the database
into UDEVLIBEXECDIR.

Adjust systemd-udev-hwdb-update.service to not generate the file in /etc if we
already have it in /usr.

fa1b91632c core: remove system start timeout logic again
The system start timeout as previously implemented would get confused by
long-running services that are included in the initial system startup
transaction for example by being cron-job-like long-running services
triggered immediately at boot. Such long-running jobs would be subject
to the default 15min timeout, esily triggering it.

Hence, remove this again. In a subsequent commit, introduce per-target
job timeouts instead, that allow us to control these timeouts more
finegrained.

Systemd 209 started setting $WATCHDOG_PID, and sd-daemon watch was

working even when a program compiled with a newer version of the
libary is used on a system running an older version of the manager.

getenv() and unsetenv() are fairly expensive calls, so optimize
sd_watchdog_enabled() by not calling them when unnecessary.

d2c68822c4 hibernate-resume-generator: add a generator for instantiating the resume unit.
hibernate-resume-generator understands resume= kernel command line parameter
and instantiates the systemd-resume@.service accordingly if it is passed.

This enables resume from hibernation using device specified on the kernel
command line, and it may be specified either as "/dev/disk/by-foo/bar"
or "FOO=bar", not only "/dev/sdXY" which is understood by the in-kernel
implementation.

So now resume= is brought on par with root= in terms of possible ways to

devices, when in a backpack might get powered on by accident due to the
easily reachable power button. We want to make sure that the system
turns itself off if it starts up due this after a while.

When the system manages to fully start-up logind will suspend the
machine by default if the lid is closed. However, in some cases we don't
even get as far as logind, and the boot hangs much earlier, for example
because we ask for a LUKS password that nobody ever enters.

Yeah, this is a real-life problem on my Yoga 13, which has one of those

c358d728e7 bootchart: don't parse /proc/uptime, use CLOCK_BOOTTIME
* systemd-bootchart always parses /proc/uptime, although the
information is unnecessary when --rel specified

* use /proc/uptime is overkill, since Linux 2.6.39 we have
clock_gettime(CLOCK_BOOTTIME, ...). The backend on kernel side is
  get_monotonic_boottime() in both cases.

* main() uses "if (graph_start <= 0.0)" to detect that /proc is
  available.

This is fragile solution as graph_start is always smaller than zero
on all systems after suspend/resume (e.g. laptops), because in this
case the system uptime includes suspend time and uptime is always
greater number than monotonic time. For example right now difference
between uptime and monotonic time is 37 hours on my laptop.

Note that main() calls log_uptime() (to parse /proc/uptime) for each
sample when it believes that /proc is not available. So on my laptop
systemd-boochars spends all live with /proc/uptime parsing +
  nanosleep(), try

    strace /usr/lib/systemd/systemd-bootchart

to see the never ending loop.

This patch uses access("/proc/vmstat", F_OK) to detect procfs.

f41925b4e4 systemd-detect-virt: detect s390 virtualization
A system that is running on a logical partition (LPAR) provided by
PR/SM has access to physical hardware (except CPU). It is true that
PR/SM abstracts the hardware, but only for sharing purposes.

Details are statet at:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/eserver/v1r2/topic/eicaz/eicazzlpar.htm

-->--
In other words, PR/SM transforms physical resources into virtual resources so
that many logical partitions can share the same physical resources.
--<--

Still, from the OS point of view, the shared virtual resource is real
hardware. ConditionVirtualization must be set to false if the OS runs
directly on PR/SM (e.g. in an LPAR).

In generated html, add external links to

By default, pages in sections 2 and 4 go to man7, since Michael
Kerrisk is the autorative source on kernel related stuff.

The rest of links goes to linux.die.net, because they have the
manpages.

Except for the pacman stuff, since it seems to be only available from
archlinux.org.

Poor gummiboot gets no link, because gummitboot(8) ain't to be found
on the net. According to common wisdom, that would mean that it does
not exist. But I have seen Kay using it, so I know it does, and
deserves to be found. Can somebody be nice and put it up somewhere?

5ae4d543cb os-release: define /usr/lib/os-release as fallback for /etc/os-release
The file should have been in /usr/lib/ in the first place, since it
describes the OS container in /usr (and not the configuration in /etc),
hence, let's support os-release files in /usr/lib as fallback if no
version in /etc exists, following the usual override logic.

A prior commit already enabled tmpfiles to create /etc/os-release as a
symlink to /usr/lib/os-release should it be missing, thus providing nice
compatibility with applications only checking in /etc.

While it's probably a good idea if all apps check both locations via a
fallback logic, it is only necessary in the early boot process, as long
as the /etc/os-release symlink has not been restored, in case we boot
with an empty /etc.

With Symlinks= we can manage one or more symlinks to AF_UNIX or FIFO

This has two benefits: first, this allows us to remove /dev/log and
/dev/initctl from /dev, thus leaving only symlinks, device nodes and
directories in the /dev tree. More importantly however, this allows us
to move /dev/log out of /dev, while still making it accessible there, so

c779a44222 hostnamed: Fix the way that static and transient host names interact
It is almost always incorrect to allow DHCP or other sources of
transient host names to override an explicitly configured static host
name.

This commit changes things so that if a static host name is set, this
will override the transient host name (eg: provided via DHCP). Transient
host names can still be used to provide host names for machines that have
not been explicitly configured with a static host name.

The exception to this rule is if the static host name is set to
"localhost". In those cases we act as if no
static host name has been explicitly set.

As discussed elsewhere, systemd may want to have an fd based ownership
of the transient name. That part is not included in this commit.

3a67e927e3 networkd-wait-online: improve interoptability and enable by default
To make sure we don't delay boot on systems where (some) network links are managed by someone else
we don't block if something else has successfully brought up a link.

We will still block until all links we are aware of that are managed by networkd have been
configured, but if no such links exist, and someone else have configured a link sufficiently
that it has a carrier, it may be that the link is ready so we should no longer block.

Note that in all likelyhood the link is not ready (no addresses/routes configured),
so whatever network managment daemon configured it should provide a similar wait-online
service to block network-online.target until it is ready.

The aim is to block as long as we know networking is not fully configured, but no longer. This
will allow systemd-networkd-wait-online.service to be enabled on any system, even if we don't
know whether networkd is the main/only network manager.

Even in the case networking is fully configured by networkd, the default behavior may not be
sufficient: if two links need to be configured, but the first is fully configured before the
second one appears we will assume the network is up. To work around that, we allow specifying
specific devices to wait for before considering the network up.

This unit is enabled by default, just like systemd-networkd, but will only be pulled in if
anyone pulls in network-online.target.

9ea28c55a2 udev: remove seqnum API and all assumptions about seqnums
The way the kernel namespaces have been implemented breaks assumptions
udev made regarding uevent sequence numbers. Creating devices in a
namespace "steals" uevents and its sequence numbers from the host. It
confuses the "udevadmin settle" logic, which might block until util a
timeout is reached, even when no uevent is pending.

Remove any assumptions about sequence numbers and deprecate libudev's
API exposing these numbers; none of that can reliably be used anymore
when namespaces are involved.

aba496a58a networkd: smooth transition from ipv4ll to dhcp address
Currently when both ipv4ll and dhcp are enabled, ipv4ll
address (if one has been claimed) is removed when dhcp
address is aquired. This is not the best thing to do
since there might be clients unaware of the removal
trying to communicate.

This patch provides a smooth transition between ipv4ll
and dhcp. If ipv4ll address was claimed [1] before dhcp,
address is marked as deprecated. Deprecated address is still
a valid address and packets can be received on it but address
cannot be selected as a source address. If dhcp lease cannot
be extended, then ipv4ll address is marked as valid again.

[1] If there is no collision, claiming IPv4LL takes between 4 to
7 seconds.

tcpwrap is legacy code, that is barely maintained upstream. It's APIs
are awful, and the feature set it exposes (such as DNS and IDENT

systemd.

Hence, let's remove the code. If people want to continue making use of
this, they can do so by plugging in "tcpd" for the processes they start.
With that scheme things are as well or badly supported as they were from
traditional inetd, hence no functionality is really lost.

cc64d0175a journal-remote: HTTP(s) support
The whole tool is made dependent on µhttpd availability. It should be
easy to make the µhttpd parts conditional, but since transfer over
HTTP seems to be the primary use case, currently this is not done.

Current implementation uses nested epoll loops: sd-event is used for
the external event loop, and µhttpd uses epoll in its own
loop. Unfortunately µhttpd does not expose enough information to add
the descriptors it uses to the external event loop. This means that
starvation of other events is possible, if one of the inner µhttpd
loops is constantly busy. This means that µhttpd servers should not
be mixed with other sources.

The TLS authentication parts haven't been really tested properly, and
should not be take too seriously.

When run in an initrd and no root= argument is set (or is set to
root=gpt-auto) we will automatically look for the root partition on the
same disk the EFI ESP is located on.

Since we look for swap, /home and /srv on the disk the root partition is
located on, we hence have a fully discoverable chain:

Firmware discovers the EFI ESP partition → the initrd discovers the
root partition → the host OS discovers swap, /home, and /srv.

Note that this requires an EFI boot loader that sets the
LoaderDevicePartUUID EFI variable, such as Gummiboot.

df1e020461 Revert back to /var/run at a couple of problems
This partially reverts 41a55c46ab

Some specifications we want to stay compatibility actually document
/var/run, not /run, and we should stay compatible with that. In order to
make sure our D-Bus implementation works on any system, regardless if
running systemd or not, we should always use /var/run which is the
only path mandated by the D-Bus spec.

Similar, glibc hardcodes the utmp location to /var/run, and this is
exposed in _UTMP_PATH in limits.h, hence let's stay in sync with this
public API, too.

We simply do not support systems where /var/run is not a symlink → /run.
Hence both are equivalent. Staying compatible with upstream
specifications hence weighs more than cleaning up superficial
appearance.

This is based on seccomp, and does not work on x86-32, since seccomp
cannot filter socketcall() syscalls on that platform.

5556b5fe41 core: clean up some confusing regarding SI decimal and IEC binary suffixes for sizes
According to Wikipedia it is customary to specify hardware metrics and
transfer speeds to the basis 1000 (SI decimal), while software metrics
and physical volatile memory (RAM) sizes to the basis 1024 (IEC binary).
So far we specified everything in IEC, let's fix that and be more
true to what's otherwise customary. Since we don't want to parse "Mi"
instead of "M" we document each time what the context used is.

6db2742802 man: replace STDOUT with standard output, etc.
Actually 'STDOUT' is something that doesn't appear anywhere: in the
stdlib we have 'stdin', and there's only the constant STDOUT_FILENO,
so there's no reason to use capitals. When refering to code,
STDOUT/STDOUT/STDERR are replaced with stdin/stdout/stderr, and in
other places they are replaced with normal phrases like standard
output, etc.
