Another large patch for the passdb rewrite. o added BOOL own_memory flag in SAM_ACCOUNT so we could use static memory for string pointer assignment or allocate a new string o added a reference TDB passdb backend. This is only a reference and should not be used in production because - RID's are generated using the same algorithm as with smbpasswd - a TDB can only have one key (w/o getting into problems) and we need three. Therefore the pdb_sam-getpwuid() and pdb_getsampwrid() functions are interative searches :-( we need transaction support, multiple indexes, and a nice open source DBM. The Berkeley DB (from sleepycat.com seems to fit this criteria now) o added a new parameter "private dir" as many places in the code were using lp_smb_passwd_file() and chopping off the filename part. Two changes in this ball... 1) Changes to smbmnt.c, smbmount.c, and smbumount.c allow them to compile on both RedHat 4.x (libc 4.x) systems and RedHat 5.x (glibc 2) systems. 2) Changes to Makefile.in and configure.in (and subsequently configure) are to configure for smbmount, smbumount, and smbmnt to compile. This adds a "--with(out)-smbmount" option to configure. Sanity checking is not present yet. You can specify this if you are not on linux, it just won't compile.

A nice *big* change to the fundemental way we do things. Samba (ab)uses the returns from getpwnam() a lot - in particular it keeps them around for a long time - often past the next call... This adds a getpwnam_alloc and a getpwuid_alloc to the collection. These function as expected, returning a malloced structure that can be free()ed with passwd_free(&passwd). This patch also cuts down on the number of calls to getpwnam - mostly by taking advantage of the fact that the passdb interface is already case-insensiteve. With this patch most of the recursive cases have been removed (that I know of) and the problems are reduced further by not using the sys_ interface in the new code. This means that pointers to the cache won't be affected. (This is a tempoary HACK, I intend to kill the password cache entirly). The only change I'm a little worried about is the change to rpc_server/srv_samr_nt.c for private groups. In this case we are getting groups from the new group mapping DB. Do we still need to check for private groups? I've toned down the check to a case sensitve match with the new code, but we might be able to kill it entirly. I've also added a make_modifyable_passwd() function, that copies a passwd struct into the form that the old sys_getpw* code provided. As far as I can tell this is only actually used in the pass_check.c crazies, where I moved the final 'special case' for shadow passwords (out of _Get_Pwnam()). The matching case for getpwent() is dealt with already, in lib/util_getent.c Also included in here is a small change to register the [homes] share at vuid creation rather than just in one varient of the session setup. (This picks up the SPNEGO cases). The home directory is now stored on the vuid, and I am hoping this might provide a saner way to do %H substitions. TODO: Kill off remaining Get_Pwnam_Modify calls (they are not needed), change the remaining sys_getpwnam() callers to use getpwnam_alloc() and move Get_Pwnam to return an allocated struct. I've created a new file lib/smbpasswd.c which will contain routines related to manipulating smbpasswd entries. - renamed and moved pdb_{get,set}hexpwd() functions - renamed and moved pdb_{decode,encode}acct_ctrl() functions - started hiding references to the cruftalicious NEW_PW_FORMAT_SPACE_PADDED_LEN constant - started gradual rename of references to acct_ctrl to acb_info which is the nomenclature used in MSDN and header files There's still more work to be done. Currently there are several places where smbpasswd entries are iterated etc. Ideally this should all happen through the passdb system.

switched over to a new method of handling uppercase/lowercase mappings for unicode strings. The new method relies on 3 files that are mmap'd at startup to provide the mapping tables. The upcase.dat and lowcase.dat tables should be the same on all systems. The valid.dat table says what characters are valid in 8.3 names, and differs between systems. I'm committing the japanese valid.dat here, in future we need some way of automatically installing and choosing a appropriate table. This commit also adds my mini tdb based gettext replacement in intl/lang_tdb.c. I have not enabled this yet and have not removed the old gettext code as the new code is still being looked at by Monyo. Right now the code assumes that the upcase.dat, lowcase.dat and valid.dat files are installed in the Samba lib directory. That is not a good choice, but I'll leave them there until we work out the new install directory structure for Samba 3.0. simo - please look at the isvalid_w() function and think about using it in your new mangling code. That should be the final step to correctly passing the chargen test code from monyo.

Drastic impromvents to pam_winbind. This adds code to do generic PAM -> NTSTATUS and NTSTATUS -> PAM error conversions, and uses them to make the error handling in pam_winbind sane. In particular, pam_winbind now uses PAM error codes, not silly '-1, -2 ...' stuff, and logs the NTSTATUS error that winbind now sends over the pipe. Added code to wbinfo to display these - makes a big difference in debugging winbindd. The main change here is the code to allow pam_winbind password changing to correctly stack - This code ripped from pam_unix, and the copyright attached. initial client side unicode support (needed for netapp filer) I've currently got this code disabled by default as it is incomplete. You enable it by setting a USE_UNICODE environment variable. Once the support is complete this check will be removed and the CAP_UNICODE capability bit will be the sole determination of whether the client library code uses unicode right now I have converted session_setup and tconx. I will do more fns over the next few days. see clistr.c for the new client side string interface. Luckily it tends to make the code smaller and neater while adding unicode support.

OK. Smbpasswd -j is DEAD. This moves the rest of the functionality into the 'net rpc join' code. Futhermore, this moves that entire area over to the libsmb codebase, rather than the crufty old rpc_client stuff. I have also fixed up the smbpasswd -a -m bug in the process. We also have a new 'net rpc changetrustpw' that can be called from a cron-job to regularly change the trust account password, for sites that run winbind but not smbd. With a little more work, we can kill rpc_client from smbd entirly! (It is mostly the domain auth stuff - which I can rework - and the spoolss stuff that sombody else will need to look over). Ok - this is the *third* implementation of this (third time's the charm :-). This implementation keeps all POSIX lock records in a separate in memory tdb database only known about in locking/posix.c. In addition, the pending close fd's are also held in a tdb which has an array of fd's indexed by device and inode. The walk-split code uglyness has been moved to posix.c from brlock.c, which is the only place that needs to know about it, and the extra functions hacked into brlock to expose internal state have been removed. This implementation passes smbtorture locktest4, the only thing I need to check now for completeness is what to do about lock upgrade/downgrades which Win32 allows under some *very* strange circumstances. This is another *BIG* change... Samba now features a pluggable passdb interface, along the same lines as the one in use in the auth subsystem. In this case, only one backend may be active at a time by the 'normal' interface, and only one backend per passdb_context is permitted outside that. This pluggable interface is designed to allow any number of passdb backends to be compiled in, with the selection at runtime. The 'passdb backend' paramater has been created (and documented!) to support this. As such, configure has been modfied to allow (for example) --with-ldap and the old smbpasswd to be selected at the same time. This patch also introduces two new backends: smbpasswd_nua and tdbsam_nua. These two backends accept 'non unix accounts', where the user does *not* exist in /etc/passwd. These accounts' don't have UIDs in the unix sense, but to avoid conflicts in the algroitmic mapping of RIDs, they use the values specified in the 'non unix account range' paramter - in the same way as the winbind ranges are specifed. While I was at it, I cleaned up some of the code in pdb_tdb (code copied directly from smbpasswd and not really considered properly). Most of this was to do with % macro expansion on stored data. It isn't easy to get the macros into the tdb, and the first password change will 'expand' them. tdbsam needs to use a similar system to pdb_ldap in this regard. This patch only makes minor adjustments to pdb_nisplus and pdb_ldap, becouse I don't have the test facilities for these. I plan to incoroprate at least pdb_ldap into this scheme after consultation with Jerry. Each (converted) passdb module now no longer has any 'static' variables, and only exports 1 init function outside its .c file. The non-unix-account support in this patch has been proven! It is now possible to join a win2k machine to a Samba PDC without an account in /etc/passwd! Other changes: Minor interface adjustments: pdb_delete_sam_account() now takes a SAM_ACCOUNT, not a char*. pdb_update_sam_account() no longer takes the 'override' argument that was being ignored so often (every other passdb backend). Extra checks have been added in some places. Minor code changes: smbpasswd no longer attempts to initialise the passdb at startup, this is now done on first use. pdbedit has lost some of its 'machine account' logic, as this behaviour is now controlled by the passdb subsystem directly. The samr subsystem no longer calls 'local password change', but does the pdb interactions directly. This allow the ACB_ flags specifed to be transferred direct to the backend, without interference. Doco: I've updated the doco to reflect some of the changes, and removed some paramters no longer applicable to HEAD.

Ken McDonell from SGI was interested in adding some profiling capabilities to Samba so that Samba could talk to the SGI PCP (Performance Co-Pilot) apps. This change adds a profiling shared memory area and uses it to count two fairly trivial things, the number of uid switches and the number of SMB packets processes. To add more just edit include/profile.h and then increment it at the right place. I've also added a -P switch to smbstatus to dump the profile area.

This was needed due to several limitations and races in the previous code - as a side effect the new code is much cleaner :) in summary: - changed sys_select() to avoid a signal/select race condition. It is a rare race but once we have signals doing notification and oplocks it is important. - changed our main processing loop to take advantage of the new sys_select semantics - split the notify code into implementaion dependent and general parts. Added the following structure that defines an implementation: struct cnotify_fns { void * (*register_notify)(connection_struct *conn, char *path, uint32 flags); BOOL (*check_notify)(connection_struct *conn, uint16 vuid, char *path, uint32 flags, void *data, time_t t); void (*remove_notify)(void *data); }; then I wrote two implementations, one using hash/poll (like our old code) and the other using the new Linux kernel change notify. It should be easy to add other change notify implementations by creating a sructure of the above type. - fixed a bug in change notify where we were returning the wrong error code. - rewrote the core change notify code to be much simpler - moved to real-time signals for leases and change notify Amazingly, it all seems to work. I was very surprised!

In the end it will probably be best if winbind does the login over its own internally managed connections, not a new one per authenticiaon. This is my 'Authentication Rewrite' version 1.01, mostly as submitted to samba-technical a few weeks ago. The idea here is to standardize the checking of user names and passwords, thereby ensuring that all authtentications pass the same standards. The interface currently implemented in as nt_status = check_password(user_info, server_info) where user_info contains (mostly) the authentication data, and server_info contains things like the user-id they got, and their resolved user name. The current ugliness with the way the structures are created will be killed the next revision, when they will be created and malloced by creator functions. This patch also includes the first implementation of NTLMv2 in HEAD, but which needs some more testing. We also add a hack to allow plaintext passwords to be compared with smbpasswd, not the system password database. Finally, this patch probably reintroduces the PAM accounts bug we had in 2.2.0, I'll fix that once this hits the tree. (I've just finished testing it on a wide variety of platforms, so I want to get this patch in).

A farily large commit: - Move rpc_client/cli_trust.c to smbd/change_trust_pw.c - It hasn't been used by anything else since smbpasswd lost its -j - Add a TALLOC_CTX to the auth subsytem. These are only valid for the length of the calls to the individual modules, if you want a longer context hide it in your private data. Similarly, all returns (like the server_info) should still be malloced. - Move the 'ntdomain' module (security=domain in oldspeak) over to use the new libsmb domain logon code. Also rework much of the code to use some better helper functions for the connection - getting us much better error returns (the new code is NTSTATUS). The only remaining thing to do is to figure out if tpot's 0xdead 0xbeef for the LUID feilds is sufficient, or if we should do random LUIDs as per the old code. Similarly, I'll move winbind over to this when I get a chance. This leaves the SPOOLSS code and some cli_pipe code as the only stuff still in rpc_client, at least as far as smbd is concerned. The conversion wasn't perfect, I probably lost some features of smbclient while doing it, but at least smbclient should be consistent now. It if fails it should _always_ fail rather than giving people the false impression of a reliable utility. the tar stuff seems to work, but hasn't had much testing as I never use it myself. I'm sure someone will find bugs in my conversion of smbtar.c. It was quite tricky as it did a lot of its own SMB calls. It now uses clientgen.c exclusively. smbclient is still quite messy, but at least it doesn't build its own SMB packets. I haven't touched smbmount as I never use it. Mike, do you want to convert smbmount to use clientgen.c?

This kills off the offending code in smbpasswd -j -Uab%c In the process we have changed from unsing compelatly random passwords to random, 15 char ascii strings. In the meantime this allows us to actually *type* the machine account password duruign debugging. OK. Smbpasswd -j is DEAD. This moves the rest of the functionality into the 'net rpc join' code. Futhermore, this moves that entire area over to the libsmb codebase, rather than the crufty old rpc_client stuff. I have also fixed up the smbpasswd -a -m bug in the process. We also have a new 'net rpc changetrustpw' that can be called from a cron-job to regularly change the trust account password, for sites that run winbind but not smbd. With a little more work, we can kill rpc_client from smbd entirly! (It is mostly the domain auth stuff - which I can rework - and the spoolss stuff that sombody else will need to look over). If a sender is using the messaging system as a notification mechanism, and the speed of notification greatly exceeds the speed of message recovery, then you get a massively (>75Mb) growing tdb. If the message is a simple notification, then the message is static, and you only need one of them in transit to a target process at any one time. This patch adds a BOOL "allow_duplicates" to the message_send_XX primitives. If set to False, then before sending a message the sender checks the existing message queue for a target pid for a duplicate of this message, and doesn't add to it if one already exists. added locktest2 this uses 16 open file descriptors on 2 servers, with each server accessed both via POSIX call and SMB calls. The idea is to test NFS/SMB locking interaction. Unfortunately the NT NFS locking implementation is so badly broken that we don't have anything to test against

the first independent msrpc daemon - lsarpcd. one horrible cut / paste job from smbd, plus a code split of shared components between the two. the job is not _yet_ complete, as i need to be able to do a become_user() call for security reasons. i picked lsarpcd first because you don't _need_ security on it (microsoft botched so badly on this one, it's not real. at least they fixed this in nt5 with restrictanonymous=0x2). fixing this involves sending the current smb and unix credentials down the unix pipe so that the daemon it eventually goes to can pick them up at the other end. i can't believe this all worked!!!

Add the pdb_plugin module from Jelmer Vernooij <jelmer@nl.linux.org>. This allow the user to select 'passdb backend = plugin : /path/to/plugin.so : pluging args' And load any arbitary plugin. Apparently Jelmer has a mysql plugin in the works - hence this patch. We probably need to rework the interface a bit before 3.0 (add versioning of some kind) but this is a good start. Fix for a problem with the new messaging system. If a sender is using the messaging system as a notification mechanism, and the speed of notification greatly exceeds the speed of message recovery, then you get a massively (>75Mb) growing tdb. If the message is a simple notification, then the message is static, and you only need one of them in transit to a target process at any one time. This patch adds a BOOL "allow_duplicates" to the message_send_XX primitives. If set to False, then before sending a message the sender checks the existing message queue for a target pid for a duplicate of this message, and doesn't add to it if one already exists. Also added code into msgtest.c to test this. Jeremy.

added a nasty lock testing program it opens 2 connections to each of 2 servers, and opens 2 fnums on the same file on each connection (a total of 8 file descriptors) then it does random lock/unlock/reopen requests in a 100 byte range on the file and compares the results from the 2 servers. strangely enough, NT fails this test against itself right now - I'm still trying to figure that out.

First pass at the libsmbclient code ... This code handles the basic stuff and compiles and links under Linux, but I do not know about any other operating systems. Now onto directory listing routines, including those that list workgroups, servers, etc. Nothing is built automatically yet, you have to make client/testsmbc to build the library and test program. Also, no make install targets are defined for libsmbclient.so as yet, either. Would be good if people test on operating systems other than Linux.

Add the pdb_plugin module from Jelmer Vernooij <jelmer@nl.linux.org>. This allow the user to select 'passdb backend = plugin : /path/to/plugin.so : pluging args' And load any arbitary plugin. Apparently Jelmer has a mysql plugin in the works - hence this patch. We probably need to rework the interface a bit before 3.0 (add versioning of some kind) but this is a good start. tridge the destroyer returns! prompted by the interpret_security() dead code that Jean-Francois pointed out I added a make target "finddead" that finds potentially dead (ie. unused) code. It spat out 304 function names ... I went through these are deleted many of them, making others static (finddead also reports functions that are used only in the local file). in doing this I have almost certainly deleted some useful code. I may have even prevented compilation with some compile options. I apologise. I decided it was better to get rid of this code now and add back the one or two functions that are needed than to keep all this baggage. So, if I have done a bit too much "destroying" then let me know. Keep the swearing to a minimum :) One bit I didn't do is the ubibt code. Chris, can you look at that? Heaps of unused functions there. Can they be made static?

some changes to the autoconf support - added config.cache to "make clean". We get two many bug reports from people builing on multiple architectures who don't remove config.cache between compiles. Hopefully a future version of autoconf will do this automatically - removed the targets that run autoconf and autoheader. There is far too great a risk of a enduser getting a error "autoheader not found" if the date on a file is changed. Samba developers will have to run autoconf and autoheader manually (as before)
